Today the clouds are white, not grey, some fat and puffy, others cotton wool, blue in between, occasionally letting the sun shine through an opening. Yesterday about 4:45pm a real downpour, pounding rain, the kind where 1-2-3 you are drenched to the skin, lasted only about 15 minutes. |

Wet grass, a wooly grey-white sky, no more trillium casting shadows upon themselves today. Hummingbird wars are in full swing, clicks and buzzing everywhere in the air, dive bombing at the feeders. That is the only buzzing though; yesterday again only one honeybee at the fruit trees, same one no doubt as yesterday. At least he was visiting multiple trees. One bumble bee on a dandelion. Where are they when the fruit trees need them? Was it the forestry spraying to my east? Crazy weather, boomeranging from winter to spring to winter earlier this year? |

Somber and subdued, a variegated white and grey sky, barely damp grass. Yesterday started out subdued and was bright and sunny by late afternoon. The dogs killed a beautiful Northern flying squirrel. This is the second in the 12 yrs here; the first was brought in still warm by Pele the cat. The new puppy has driven the cats to outdoors, and I fear for all the smaller creatures, birds and rodents, with the cats afraid to come inside for their suppers. My husky dog has only just recently taken an interest in the squirrels, and brought in a beautiful golden mantled ground squirrel not too long ago. Dougie the obnoxious Douglas squirrel continues to drive us crazy, thank goodness. I would never meet many of the small creatures of these woods if my pets did not murder them and bring them inside. Tomatoes are all planted yesterday, and the garden covered with coffee bean bags, layer 5? |

grey sky, air full of birdsong. I know those who don't live here, and even those who do, often think of such mornings as dark and depressing. But they are really a soft grey, a pleasant coolness full of diffused light, a gentle start when the day may be harsh and bright. Who are these people who crave unremitting sunshine? I get thirsty just thinking about it. Yesterday my ODFW person who watches over my habitat designation, showed me a bird's nest right on the trail I walk every day. A bit of moss in the branches, like all the bits of moss in the branches, something I would never have noticed as I pass it 365 days of the year. Looking down on it from above, a bit of a challenge, this bit of moss was a cup, holding four little blue eggs, speckled with brown. |

NOAA says 30% chance of rain after 11 am, less than 0.1 inch. shouldn't it change to 100% after the fact? And it is not 11 yet. Wet grass, blue sky, not a cloud in the sky, dirty band over the City of Roses. Air so sweet last night, stargazer lilies have started to open. Ignored the tomato garden for a mere two days, and the Kabocha squash threw their arms over neighboring tomato plants, tying them down with tendrils. First time I have actually had to cut off Kabocha arms instead of gently redirecting them. Same in the woods-- the invasive patches of blackberries have stretched out new arms two or three feet in length, where their cut stumps of a few days ago were. Growing season. |

a lovely morning. barely damp grass, a soft grey-white sky with blue showing through, selective light lighting up the tops of the cottonwood trees, light gusts of wind fluttering their leaves like their aspen cousins.A soft glow outlines the hills behind Portland. There is thunder off and on, and splotches of wet on the stone patio looking like big shadows of raindrops. This is transient, the raindrop splotches have disappeared, like shadows when a cloud covers the sun, a few minutes later. |

For the past couple weeks leaves have been drifting down, just a few, alder and big leaf maple, yellow and orange, reminding me even in August heat that summer is winding down and fall will soon arrive. As much as I love fall, fall leaves, fall coolness, there is always a sense of sadness or regret as summer begins to fade. I think it must be that fall is the season that most reminds us that time is passing, another year of life gone by. |

steady rain. power out only once, just off and on. elk and bear and deer are probably happy they finished off all the pears and asian pears and tomatoes and most apples and broke the trees in half while the weather was warm and dry and they could most enjoy the feast. I should not complain; a new area, one of the few not clear cut near me, is now in the process of being cut, and I am the island, their woods and unfortunately their desert table. I wish I could do a goose that laid the golden egg seminar with the bear and elk. My long coaxed and nurtured trees will not give fruit next year if you kill them. Life is too short, they would answer, and all the people up here just shake their heads and tell me I got tags for deer and elk, just call me. |

How is it, this day of homogeneous grey sky

How is it, that when I look back over my shoulder,
Back down the trail to the west,
That all the spaces between leaves are glowing gold,
Glowing bright.
And when I come out into the clear
There is my house, glowing as well,
Golden red and warm, without a light on,
Lit too by lighted sky, as if it were another forest leaf.
That grey sky, the slow steady rain,
A soft background to the end of the day,
