Six samples of new snow indicated a decrease of 20% in depth as a result of freezing rain on top of fluffy snow. Accumulation of new snow was measured at 7 pm just after the freezing rain began. Total precipitation since snow began on Dec 9 has been 1.02" plus four days of Trace. It seems unlikely that the total precipation has been conserved so well for a week (even though temperatures have averaged well below freezing), so error in collection in the gauge or in sampling the core this morning, or both, is suspected.

With a high of 48 degrees F yesterday and no new snow, it seems very unlikely that total snow depth increased by 2.6 inches. I am still not sure that my probe made it all the way to ground level. It may have merely hit another harder ice layer. The snow/ice seems to still be at least 20" thick.
