The marsh is interlocking swathes of green...from nearly black to chartreuse-yellow. Typical for this time of year. Rainfall seems to be skirting this area...so much so that I will need to water portions of my lawn if it doesn't rain by tomorrow. |

As noted, usual street flooding occurred in Berkeley Hills, on Murray, Yeaman's Hall and Remount Roads. Rain caused heavy traffic backups in the area. The rain occurred on and off from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. With accumulation, I avoided lawn irrigation. |

With the combination high tide and heavy rains, marsh tides flooded greater area of the back yard. The Stormwater ditch on the SE side of the property overflowed, strewing detritus over the side yard. The flooding/overflow did not reach the house or cause property damage. Fiddler crabs have been flushed from their usual habitat at the marsh border and are up in the lawn, where ibis have moved in to enjoy the bounty. We were not present for the rain event (in Charlotte for the day), so I can only report on the observed aftermath. |

The afternoon rains have meant that I have not had to water my outdoor potted plants for some time. Most things planted in my garden are drought tolerant and watered only under extreme dry conditions. Yesterday, I treated low-lying area of my lawn adjacent to the storm water drainage ditch for a fungus (large patch) which has developed over the past week, undoubtedly due to the frequent rains and puddling. Youth soccer games have been cancelled every evening but Thursday due to rain, thunder and lightning. Hummingbirds are very active and defensive. Red-shouldered hawks are very active, and have flown into our windows recently several times. We have placed non-reflective stickers on the windows which seems to have worked. A small flock of ibis now feed nearly every morning in our yard on the crabs that have been disturbed by the frequent rains and occasional flooding. Yesterday, we saw the red-shouldered hawk feeding on crabs in the midst of the ibis. The marsh has begun to turn golden. The seashore mallow that grows throughout the marsh has stopped blooming and has set seed. The chinese elm leaves have begun to turn yellow and drop. |
