Since I have not yet received my 'official' rain gauge, this measurement was made with my Accu-Rite gauge, which has a capacity of 5 in. and is marked in
1/8th increments, not tenths. Yesterday was mostly clear with scattered clouds. Around 2pm clouds rolled
in from the north and it became cloudy, clearing again
overnight. It must have rained a couple of hours before dawn this morning. The pond on Hill Trace Trail
was near a high level after the late May rains, but has begun to recede. It is now just below the letters
'No Fishing' which marks the middle of the sign. |

On an overcast day when I felt that it might rain at any minute, it didn't rain at all. Overcast all morning and clearing in the afternoon. Heavy dew in the morning, which, of course, did not amount even to
a Trace. In some areas of the world like the coasts of
Peru and Chile and Namibia, the dew accounts for most
of the year's precipitation, but not here. |

More than a Trace, about 1/16th or 1/20. A few drops came out when I turned the gauge upside-down. My 'official' rain gauges (2 of them) arrived yesterday and I shall try to install them on Saturday along with my regular yardwork duties. Yesterday the shower
probability was 50% so I was surprised to get so little
rain. Don't even know when it started. |

There was a thunderstorm in progress when I checked the
rain gauge this morning. 0.18 inches registered today and another 0.09 for tomorrow as it continued to rain for a few minutes more. Wonder if it's an offshoot of Hurricane Arthur, which was right offshore at 8am. These sporadic cloud formations spiral off the center
of the storm and produce bands of showers. I grew up in
South Florida and this is the typical pattern. |

As Hurricane Arthur passed offshore, we got two relatively brief showers. As noted yesterday, it was still raining at 7:05am yesterday, so 0.09 came after the shut-off time. At 16:20 it rained for 2-3 minutes, just a Trace. At 18:25 we had a thunderstorm that tapered off until about 19:00, stopping and starting
again. Another 0.06 came down for a total of 0.15 for
the day. Despite several rainless days, the garden and
landscape are lush and growing. The grass is as thick
and green as I've seen it in the three years we have
lived in this house (new lawn), and the ponds are full. The plants along my Dry Streambed that runs across the north side of the house are mostly blooming--cannas and daylilies with a scattering of
wild flowers. Plants potted for the LCMG Fall Plant
Sale have lost their leaves, but the stems are still
green. A small dogwood for the same event has also lost
its leaves but shows signs of reviving. I garden only
in the shade during the summer heat and avoid the west
side of the house except by sheer necessity. |

All afternoon long, beginning about 13:00 I watched a huge thunderstorm build SE/S of here. I could clearly see sheets of rain in the distance and smell the rain. By 15:00 the clouds were moving NE toward me and by about 16:00 the sky was completely overcast. However, the active part of the storm never did reach us and so the
rainfall for the day was once again 0.00. I had the sprinklers on all day to avoid losing any of my newer plants. Pond levels in the area are slowly dropping. |

It is rare to see rainfall in the gauge and not be aware
that it rained at all; this was one of those occasions.
My guess is that it rained between 19:00 and 21:15 when
I went out to call my dog in for the night and the railing on the balcony was wet. It has been hot a breezy for the past two days. When I do yardwork, I try
to work in the shade, wear a broad-brimmed hat and long
sleeves and trousers. Helps keep the snakes off too! |

We had a short thunderstorm from 13:10 to 13:20 that produced 0.13 inch of rain. A second storm before dawn

Absolutely nothing in the precipitation department today.
Temperatures, however, are running about 10 degrees below
the normal temperatures. It was 68 degrees this morning
about 7:45am and probably the high for the day will not
break 90 degrees. Wonderful weather with the prospect
of a rainy week starting on Monday. Can't report on the
farms in the area--I live in exurbia, but all of the nearest farms are to the west of me, and my normal routes of travel are southeast of here. About four miles from here a neighbor's sunflowers are huge and
the heads are too. I'm watering today because I have
many new plants I bought last week, mostly natives and
a few ornamentals. |

It was raining when I read the gauge this morning, so that we know there will be something to read tomorrow
morning. I drove by Dutch Fork Creek yesterday and it looked low. It is hard to see the water unless you drive real slow over the bridge. Since this was a first
view, it will establish a base line for the water level. I used to drive over Rawls Creek in Lexington
daily; it was close to my old house, but at 8 miles, it
is 'not in my station's area' anymore. Rawls Creek is a
bigger creek than Dutch Fork Creek and the bed is quite
rocky. I'll check Dutch Fork Creek from time to time.
There are a couple of other smaller creeks in the area
but the water is hard to see from the bridges, and I don't know the names of those creeks. Interestingly,
General Sherman's men spent the night along Dutch Fork
Creek in February 1865 on their way out of Columbia. |

Obviously not much accumulation. Kept me cool while I worked in the yard, though. I don't know the rate of evaporation from the soil, but it's gotta be higher than 0.01 per day. There must be a simple equation for
figuring out the rate of evaporation. It's obviously linked to temperature and cloud coverage. |

Despite the paucity of rainfall, there are several surprises this August. First of all is the coolness, unusual for this time of year; it was 67 degrees this morning and felt like early May. The second thing is the lack of hurricanes; must be El Nino kicking in as it was predicted to do in late summer. It remains to be
seen if hurricanes peak between Labor Day and the end of October, as they usually do. Third, it's been a wet
August so far, and although we are not at last year's
level of rainfall, we are fast catching up. I hope that
CoCoRahs will feature articles on the Bermuda High and
El Nino soon. |

Yesterday was very hot and dry, even though we worked outside. We kept to the shade and retreated to the Garage
by mid-morning, sweeping and then spraying it clean. Anybody who works in the full sun in above-90-degree
weather is a fool. Rain expected Sunday--I have the sprinklers on as we speak. |

It looks and smells as though rain is imminent this morning, and boy, we sure need it! Some of my newer plants are wilting badly and I know for sure that I've
lost a couple of Azaleas well back in the beds. Let's see if TS Christopher has any effect on our weather. At
this point it doesn't look like it will come close enough. I've been surprised by hurricanes before, though, and will be again, with their crazy loops and sudden changes in direction. There is a modern tendency
to veer offshore, affecting only the Outer Banks. |

Sprinklers on because the plants are wilting. Got a wedding coming up on Sunday and everything must look
fresh and green, rain or no rain. I'll check on the creek today but I'm sure it's lower than ever. |

Still no rain. Not even any dew. As TS Christobal passes
offshore, we will see if it comes close enough to bring
some showers. This appears to be a fairly wet storm.
In the meantime, we are watering again. |

Surprisingly cool, but no rain. Not even much dew, although the grass is damp. No sprinkling today, it's
time to harvest my crop of grass. The forecast for the
coming week is several days of rain, thank goodness! |

Trace. The gauge read 0.00 yesterday and this morning there was the merest trace of precipitation during a very
light drizzle at 7:30am. It is lightly overcast and we hope for more rain. This has been a very busy weekend leading up to our youngest son's marriage this evening.
Yesterday was the rehearsal in the morning, and the Rehearsal Dinner in the evening, with guests drifting in at all times during the day. |

Dry as a bone. As a matter of fact there was only a thin
layer of dust in the rain gauge. Now that my son's wedding is over, life is slowly returning to normal.
The plants are dry and I will have to water again today. It did rain last night at the wedding site, some twenty miles from our house, once about 17:30 and
much harder later around 20:30, but not a drop here. |

Between 18:10 and 19:00 it rained 0.55 inch in a hard downpour with thunder and lightning and occasional torrents of rain. Although it wasn't enough, it was a turnaround that we badly needed--plants were wilting and well on their way to dying. The grass was going brown after a recent mowing and things were looking sad. This will be enough for a day or two and then
we'll see what happens. |

I watched the thunderheads gather all afternoon and with

was none, so I have resumed sprinkling again. The grass

Thunderheads gathered about 13:00 starting in the western
sky. Gradually became completely overcast except the extreme eastern sky. First rain shower 15:10 to 15:40--
0.36 inch. Second shower at 17:15 of unknown duration--
0.33 inch. Total accumulation for the day 0.69. As of 7:10 am this morning the sky was completely overcast and the ground was wet with puddles. I went by Dutch Fork Creek yesterday right as it began to rain at 15:10
and the creek bed only had a small rivulet. Generally
Dutch Fork Creek (DFC) stretches from bank to bank about twelve to fifteen feet wide with a few rocks and
boulders jutting up. I could easily have stepped across
DFC as I did with the Suwanee River in SE Georgia many
years ago. |

There was a steady drizzle from about 11 am to about 15:00 amounting to a Trace by 16:00. When I checked the
gauge this morning the Trace had increased to 0.91. The
sky has been overcast since early Monday morning and continues to be so. It 'feels like' it may rain at any
moment although the forecast is for 0% shower probability. |

Light rain at 13:30, followed by another light shower about 15:10. Heavy, sustained downpour at 15:30. I checked the gauge after the rain stopped about 17:17 and 2.30 registered. This morning there was a Trace more. Total for the day was 2.30 with more expected today. The ground is saturated and the grass is lush.
I will check out the plants I put in 2-3 weeks ago when I work outside this morning.

15:10 light rain turns into hard downpour--by 16:55
1.71 had accumulated. At 18:45 it began a light rain
again. We had thunder and lightning at 3:15am. This morning at 7:55 another 0.12 had accumulated. It was
sprinkling as I read the gauge at that time. With a two-day total of over 4 1/2 inches, the plants are lush
and green and there are rivulets running across the driveways. I will check Dutch Fork Creek and our nearby
pond this afternoon, but I am sure they are filled. Luckily for me, I put in three Chinese Wild Gingers and
planted some Buddleia and Solidago rugosa seeds yesterday before it rained. They are supposed to be kept moist! |

Completely overcast. A Trace of rain in the gauge. I drove by Dutch Fork Creek and it is full of muddy water.
Two ponds in the area are very full of muddy water from
the runoff of the recent hard rains. It was sprinkling the lightest drizzle as I checked the gauge. |

No rain. It is remarkable that we went from 4 1/2 inches
in two days to none in just a couple of days. There's not even a cloud in the sky this morning. Last night at 12:40am I observed lightening off to the NE, but since it was beyond the tree line I couldn't tell where
it was falling, not to mention that it was dark. Most
likely it was across the Broad River along Monticello Road. |

Much to my surprise, it was raining and quite dark when I
got up. It was raining moderately as I read the gauge.
Yesterday's rain will relieve me of dragging the hose and sprinkling various flowerbeds today. I plan to work in the garden tomorrow. The only task that will be made more difficult with the rain is mowing the lawn.
Softer soil is always good! I will drive by the Creek
and the ponds today to check on them. Looks like we will get some more rain today. |

On a damp day with an impossibly blue sky, we still got
0.01 precipitation, probably from dew. Both tubes of the
rain gauge were covered with dew. Interestingly, my wife's name is 'Rocio' which is Spanish for 'dew' from
the Latin word 'ros.' So, it's a celebration of her name. |

Much to my surprise, there was actually some precipitation in the rain gauge this morning. Not much,
but enough to keep the ground moist. Shower probability
for today and Tuesday is close to zero. Last week we got a surprise rain of exactly one inch on Tuesday night. Although the leaves are beginning to turn on this First Day of Fall, I would describe the landscape
as lush and green overall. |

It was sprinkling this morning when I read the gauge. It
sprinkled between 13:00 and 15:00 yesterday while I was
driving to downtown Lexington. It rained hard but intermittently as I drove in Lexington. I could see sheets of rain over downtown Columbia about 13:30 as I drove over the Saluda Shoals Dam. Overcast and damp today. There were already puddles as I read the gauge. |

A beautiful day with wispy clouds and plenty of sun, occasionally breezy, but not a drop of rain. Except for
the occasional hundreths of an inch and Traces, it has
been a rain-free week. I won't say 'dry' because it has

There was a steady but brief shower yesterday at 9:45am
followed by intermittent drizzles. This morning it is
light mist, heavy dew. The neighborhood ponds are holding steady and when I checked Dutch Fork Creek it was down from recent high levels, but a good steady stream. The amount of rainfall yesterday was between
0.02 and 0.03 so call it 0.025. After the forecast for
80% shower probability, the amount of precipitation was
disappointing and by evening I had the sprinklers on.
