It rained solidly most of the day Thursday. There may have been a shower after the time indicated but for the most part the rain was over after 4 pm. There was no thunder with mainly light to moderate rain falling. It was occasionally heavy. There was a lot of strong wind through most of the period. I would estimate the wind gusted as high as 40-45 mph at times. It was 65-70 most of the time with some cooling after midnight. I was happy to see the barometer rising around the time of the severe weather scare soon after we stopped giving out treats for Halloween around 8:30 pm. It was clear throughout the period and cold. Although it was colder where the NWS monitors the temperature there is a sharper temperature inversion today than yesterday as it is near freezing at about 10 feet. Yesterday it was in the 20's at that level. The temperature is more uniform with height during most of the day but there is a great difference at dawn. So I guess when those temperature differences mix out it will be warmer today. |

It was a rough evening as severe storm hit with a little hail and a lot of wind between 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm. There was also some crashing thunder with the storm as tornado sirens wailed. You could hear the wind hit the house although no major damage appeared to occur. Before then there was some light rain in the morning, and a few heavier showers in the afternoon with a lot of howling wind. There was a smaller thunderstorm in the area about a half hour to an hour before the main event. It was warm with a high in the 70's. There was just enough snow to be blown around by the wind. The snow melted a little bit in the grass, but still covered a good portion of it. There was rain and southerly wind along with a high in the lower 50's ahead of the front. Then around 2 pm the temperature took a free fall dropping over 40 degrees by this morning with a current temperature of 7. A little mixed precipitation hit at the tail end of the main precipitation around 3:30 pm and I witnessed at least one snow flake that evening. No accumulation occurred. I didn't check the road for ice so I don't know if there is any. This morning there was some small cumulus clouds in the sky although I didn't notice any flurries. I must admit I checked the gauge last night when the precipitation basically ended because I'm a little old for braving temperatures like this so I looked out my window this morning. Since there's no evidence of accumulation I think it's safe to say little to nothing happened overnight. |

A steady rain fell from the late morning through most of the afternoon. It cleared up over night causing colder temps and the partial freezing of the rain gauge. Tomorrow may be my last measurement as I'm moving to an apartment building where I probably won't be allowed to put up a rain gauge. It's been a good experience being a weather observer volunteer. When I was in my 20's I tried to earn a Meteorology degree at Kansas but fell short due to mental illness. I screwed up an job interview in an effort to try to become a weather observer at McKeller Field. Soon after that a degree became required to work at the NWS. Weather has been a passion all my life and I regret that I was unable to make a living at that endeavor. I'm sure a few other volunteer observers have a similar story. I am pleased to have made at least a small contribution to the natural sciences, and wish future success with the CoCoRaHS project. |
