This date 1990, a Fujita Scale F5 tornado (261 - 318 mph winds) touched down in vicinity of Plainfield, Illinois (40 miles SW of Chicago) causing 29 fatalities and $165M in damages (1990 dollars). The NWS was heavily criticized for their lack of a timely tornado warning even though the approaching storm had a classic tornado supercell radar signature (hook echo). This date 1991, American physicist Edwin McMillan died (83 y/o). McMillan is credited with being the first to produce a transuranium element and subsequently received (co-shared) the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the research. Transuranium elements have atomic numbers greater than uranium, are unstable and subsequently decay radioactively into stable elements. This date 1965, Cat 4 Hurricane Betsy made final landfall at Grand Isle, LA (54 miles S of New Orleans). Betsy's storm path was quite unpredictable; result, localized preparation times were short which contributed to this storm being the first-to-date to exceed $1B in uncorrected damage. Initial U.S. landfall was Key Largo (Florida Keys) on the 8th which cut Route 1, the only road out of the Keys to the Miami area. The storm surge was much higher than predicted and flooded large areas of the Florida Keys followed the next day by Grand Isle, LA (7.8 sq mile, population 1,500, elevation seven feet) which was totally submerged. CERN is the European Organization for Nuclear Research (French Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire), a European physics research organization operating the world’s largest particle accelerator used for high-energy physics research. This date 1994, Frank Corder stole a small Cessna 150 aircraft from Aldino Airport, MD (now Harford County Airport), 33 miles NE of Baltimore, and flew into DC airspace during the early morning hours, apparently with the intent of crashing into the White House. Corder reportedly was intoxicated, depressed and suicidal due to his wife leaving him. The attempt was unsuccessful; he crashed on the south lawn of the White House and died of injuries. President Bill Clinton was not in the White House when the incident occurred. This date 1984, Joe Kittinger became the first person to fly a lighter-than-air helium balloon, named Rosie O’Grady’s Balloon of Peace (of Rosie O’Grady Flying Circus fame), solo across the Atlantic Ocean. This date 1736 marks the death of Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, a Polish-Dutch physicist and engineer who invented the mercury thermometer in 1714 and developed the temperature scale named after him. Use of the mercury thermometer has largely been phased out due to toxicity fears; however, as we know, they continue to be used in meteorological applications. Most manufacturers still producing this type of thermometer now use galinstan (a liquid metal alloy consisting of gallium, indium and tin). This date 1967, Cat 5 Hurricane Beulah made U.S. landfall 25 miles east of Brownsville, TX (just south of the mouth of the Rio Grande River) with a 20 foot storm surge on South Padre Island to the north. This date 1985, the initial FarmAid benefit concert was held in Champaign, IL before a crowd of 80k C&W and Rock music enthusiasts, raising over $9M. FarmAid was organized to assist American farmers who were in danger of losing their family farms through mortgage foreclosures. The concert successfully increased awareness of the importance of family farms and was largely responsible for passage of the Agricultural Credit Act of 1987, a $4B financial assistance package to restructure vulnerable family farm debt. This date 1983, Soviet Air Defense Forces Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov is credited by multiple western governments as being responsible for averting a global nuclear exchange between the U.S. and the Soviets. This date 1908, the first Ford Model T was shipped from Detroit, MI to a waiting customer. The Model T (initially costing $850, later dropping to $240 due to manufacturing efficiencies) was designed to be mass produced on a moving assembly line with completely interchangeable parts; thus, reducing costs to the point where middle-class Americans could afford an automobile. This date 2008, private aerospace company SpaceX successfully launched their first Falcon I expendable launch vehicle into low earth orbit with a dead-weight payload of 400 pounds. SpaceX, headquartered in Hawthorne, CA, was founded in 2002 by PayPal founder/Tesla Motors CEO multi-billionaire Elon Musk with the goal of reducing space transportation costs and private human exploration of Mars by 2031. The small Falcon I has been retired and the company has moved on to successful development of a series of heavy-lift rockets which have launched private and military high-earth satellites and delivered supplies to the International Space Station. Today marks the birthday of Enrico Fermi, an Italian-American physicist and Nobel Prize winner for his induced radioactivity experimentation. Fermi was born 1901 and died 1954 (53 y/o) of cancer; apparently unrelated to his years of work in radioactive environments before shielding was considered necessary. He is undoubtedly best known for supervising construction of the world’s first nuclear reactor (Chicago Pile-1) and performing the critical mass calculations for that first reactor. Fermi was both a theorist and an experimentalist (quite unusual for a physicist) although his very early criticality feasibility calculations indicated fission was not possible since he failed to account for binding energy in nuclides with an odd number of neutrons. A research paper by German chemist Ida Noddack eventually put Fermi on the correct track. This date 1954, the world’s first nuclear powered naval vessel was commissioned in New London, CT…the USS Nautilus (SSN-571), an otherwise conventional, albeit quite large at 323 feet long, submarine armed with six 21-inch torpedo tubes for nautical interdiction missions. Nautilus was the fastest submarine of the time; unclassified surface speed 25.3 mph, submerged speed 26.5 mph. The most famous Nautilus mission was an underwater transit of the geographic North Pole in August 1958; thus, gaining credibility for nuclear subs with Sea Launched Ballistic Missiles which were in the build pipeline. Ice depth was as much as 60 feet for parts of the journey in the Bering Strait. Underwater navigation at the extreme northern latitudes was accomplished with a highly-modified Inertial Navigation System and an experimental gyrocompass. Nautilus was decommissioned 3 March 1980.
