That warning failed to note the super tornado was already on the ground nor its track. Several NWS staffing changes ensued and the “Plainfield Syndrome” (it’s better to issue too many warnings and be wrong rather than miss a critical one) was born. 9/9/2014 6:00 AM 0.02 M M M M This date 1965, Cat 4 Hurricane Betsy made final landfall at Grand Isle, LA (54 miles S of New Orleans). Betsy's storm path was quite unpredictable; result, localized preparation times were short which contributed to this storm being the first-to-date to exceed $1B in uncorrected damage. Initial U.S. landfall was Key Largo (Florida Keys) on the 8th which cut Route 1, the only road out of the Keys to the Miami area. The storm surge was much higher than predicted and flooded large areas of the Florida Keys followed the next day by Grand Isle, LA (7.8 sq mile, population 1,500, elevation seven feet) which was totally submerged. Fatalities 81, damage $1.42B (1965 dollars). As expected, the name Betsy has been retired. 9/10/2014 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M This date 2008, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN was powered up for the first time. CERN is the European Organization for Nuclear Research (French Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire), a European physics research organization operating the world’s largest particle accelerator used for high-energy physics research. The proton accelerator is housed inside a 5.34 mile diameter circular tunnel (10.56 mile circumference), 330 feet under the ground along the Swiss/French border near Geneva. At full operating energy, protons are accelerated to 0.999999991% the speed of light and go around the tunnel circumference more than 11,000 times/sec in opposite directions in different tubes before colliding. March 2013, CERN physicists announced the creation of a particle consistent with the theorized sub-atomic Higgs boson (God particle), a fundamental building block of the universe and believed to be the particle which gives mass to matter. As the theory goes, objects gain their size and shape when particles interact in an energy field with the Higgs boson; the more they attract, the bigger their mass. Temp 69.3°F, dew point 67.5°F, humidity 94%, barometer 30.10 inches Hg and rising slightly since midnight, overcast skies, wind light and variable, soil temps at 3/5/8/16 inch levels 71/71/72/72°F, calculated sunrise 6:48:47 EDT at station location, daylight duration 12 hrs 39 mins. 9/11/2014 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M REMEMBER 9/11? This date 2001, typically referred to as “9/11,” a series of coordinated al-Qaeda terrorist attacks were conducted on American soil. Two hijacked airliners from Boston Logan Airport were intentionally flown into the north and south towers of Lower Manhattan’s (NYC) World Trade Center complex; a third airliner from Dulles International Airport was flown into the Pentagon; and, a fourth was hijacked from Newark International Airport with intent to crash into either the White House or the U.S. Capitol. The fourth hijack mission was unsuccessful after a small group of passengers and flight attendants tried to regain control of the airliner (Todd Bramer—“Let’s Roll”); the terrorists intentionally rolled the aircraft and crashed into a field near Shanksville, PA when the group breached the cockpit to fight the hijackers. Fatalities 2,977 victims + 19 hijackers; $3.3T in direct & indirect damages (NY Times). Temp 67.9°F, dew point 66.7°F, humidity 96%, barometer 29.927 inches Hg and falling since midnight, partly cloudy skies, wind SEbS@6-8 mph, soil temps at 3/5/8/16 inch levels 70/71/72/72°F, calculated sunrise 6:49:40 EDT at station location, daylight duration 12 hrs 37 mins. 9/15/2014 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M This date 1981, the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved Sandra Day O’Connor to become the first female justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Justice O’Connor was subsequently confirmed by the full Senate on 21 September by a 99 - 0 vote. O’Connor, a federalist and moderate conservative, was a Ronald Reagan appointee. Arguably, her most controversial swing vote was Bush v. Gore, which stopped any further challenges to the results of the 2000 presidential election and effectively ended Al Gore’s hope of becoming president via a Florida recount. Justice O'Connor retired from the court in January 2006 and was succeeded by Justice Samuel Alito. CompuServe was the dominant player until the early-90s when AOL’s business model of a monthly subscription service coupled with a superior graphical user interface proved to be preferable, prompting users to abandon CompuServe by the tens of thousands. CompuServe (Classic) was eventually absorbed by AOL and ceased operation entirely in mid-2009. By today’s standards, CompuServe’s 380,000 subscribers in 1987 is a minuscule number but those who were using the incredibly slow full-duplex 300 bit/s commercial modems of the time were the early vanguards of the Information Age. Oracle came from behind to win the last eight races and finally took the Cup on a winner-take-all thriller by 44 seconds at speeds reaching 46 mph. The 34th Cup was marred in controversy starting with the competing boat design rules and ending with an alleged cheating scandal (confirmed by an international jury) during a warm-up event. A full accounting is well outside the scope of this synopsis; if interested, see http://www.americascup.com/en/34th-americas-cup.html Observed 0600 hr temp 60.1°F, dew point 59.2°F, humidity 98%, barometer 30.28 inches Hg and falling steadily since midnight, overcast skies with drizzle, wind variable SW-W@5-7 mph, soil temps at 3/5/8/16 inch levels 64/65/66/66°F, calculated sunrise 7:02:09 EDT at station location, daylight duration 12 hrs 2 mins. 9/26/2014 6:00 AM 0.37 M M M M This date 1983, Soviet Air Defense Forces Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov is credited by multiple western governments as being responsible for averting a global nuclear exchange between the U.S. and the Soviets. As the Soviet on-scene nuclear early-warning system duty officer, he correctly assessed that a computer malfunction was responsible for the indication that a five-warhead intercontinental missile was inbound to the Soviet heartland from the U.S. A less experienced duty officer would likely have up-channeled the erroneous information which could easily have triggered a massive retaliatory strike by the nuclear superpower. Observed 0600 hr temp 57.4°F, dew point 56.6°F, humidity 97%, barometer 30.25 inches Hg and mostly steady since midnight, partly cloudy skies, wind NEbN@1 mph, soil temps at 3/5/8/16 inch levels 64/65/65/66°F, calculated sunrise 7:03:03 EDT at station location, daylight duration 11 hrs 59 mins. 9/27/2014 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M This date 1908, the first Ford Model T was shipped from Detroit, MI to a waiting customer. The Model T (initially costing $850, later dropping to $240 due to manufacturing efficiencies) was designed to be mass produced on a moving assembly line with completely interchangeable parts; thus, reducing costs to the point where middle-class Americans could afford an automobile. The rear wheel drive Model T had a four-cylinder engine producing 20 hp; ran on gasoline, kerosene or ethanol; eventually had a starting battery (although it could also be hand cranked) and an alternator which allowed for electric headlights; two forward gears; an emergency/parking brake lever (no wheel brakes); pedal-activated transmission brake; multiple seating and body style configurations; total model production exceeded 15M vehicles. It was subsequently named the 20th century’s most influential car. Observed 0600 hr temp 51.8°F, dew point 50.9°F, humidity 97%, barometer 30.22 inches Hg and falling slightly since midnight, clear skies, wind ESE@1 mph, soil temps at 3/5/8/16 inch levels 63/65/66/67°F, calculated sunrise 7:03:57 EDT at station location, daylight duration 11 hrs 57 mins. 9/28/2014 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M This date 2008, private aerospace company SpaceX successfully launched their first Falcon I expendable launch vehicle into low earth orbit with a dead-weight payload of 400 pounds. SpaceX, headquartered in Hawthorne, CA, was founded in 2002 by PayPal founder/Tesla Motors CEO multi-billionaire Elon Musk with the goal of reducing space transportation costs and private human exploration of Mars by 2031. The small Falcon I has been retired and the company has moved on to successful development of a series of heavy-lift rockets which have launched private and military high-earth satellites and delivered supplies to the International Space Station. SpaceX employs nearly 4,000 employees and has manifest contracts for some 40 military and private multi-national launches through early 2020. Observed 0600 hr temp 53.1°F, dew point 52.0°F, humidity 96%, barometer 30.192 inches Hg and falling slightly since midnight, partly cloudy skies, wind calm, soil temps at 3/5/8/16 inch levels 64/65/66/67°F, calculated sunrise 7:04:52 EDT at station location, daylight duration 11 hrs 54 mins. 9/29/2014 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today marks the birthday of Enrico Fermi, an Italian-American physicist and Nobel Prize winner for his induced radioactivity experimentation. Fermi was born 1901 and died 1954 (53 y/o) of cancer; apparently unrelated to his years of work in radioactive environments before shielding was considered necessary. He is undoubtedly best known for supervising construction of the world’s first nuclear reactor (Chicago Pile-1) and performing the critical mass calculations for that first reactor. Fermi was both a theorist and an experimentalist (quite unusual for a physicist) although his very early criticality feasibility calculations indicated fission was not possible since he failed to account for binding energy in nuclides with an odd number of neutrons. A research paper by German chemist Ida Noddack eventually put Fermi on the correct track. Observed 0600 hr temp 59.8°F, dew point 59.2°F, humidity 98%, barometer 30.011 inches Hg and falling since midnight, clear skies, wind SWbS@1.5 mph, soil temps at 3/5/8/16 inch levels 65/66/67/67°F, calculated sunrise 7:05:47 EDT at station location, daylight duration 11 hrs 52 mins. 9/30/2014 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M This date 1954, the world’s first nuclear powered naval vessel was commissioned in New London, CT…the USS Nautilus (SSN-571), an otherwise conventional, albeit quite large at 323 feet long, submarine armed with six 21-inch torpedo tubes for nautical interdiction missions. Nautilus was the fastest submarine of the time; unclassified surface speed 25.3 mph, submerged speed 26.5 mph. The most famous Nautilus mission was an underwater transit of the geographic North Pole in August 1958; thus, gaining credibility for nuclear subs with Sea Launched Ballistic Missiles which were in the build pipeline. Ice depth was as much as 60 feet for parts of the journey in the Bering Strait. Underwater navigation at the extreme northern latitudes was accomplished with a highly-modified Inertial Navigation System and an experimental gyrocompass. Nautilus was decommissioned 3 March 1980. Observed 0600 hr temp 63.4°F, dew point 62.8°F, humidity 98%, barometer 29.906 inches Hg and falling since midnight, mostly cloudy skies, wind SEbS@3 mph mph, soil temps at 3/5/8/16 inch levels 65/66/66/66°F, calculated sunrise 7:06:42 EDT at station location, daylight duration 11 hrs 49 mins.
