Giant snowflakes fell much of the evening, plastering nearly all surfaces, and making roads slushy. Snow ended around midnight. Skies cleared by daybreak, accompanied by falling temperatures and gusty winds.

Total ice accretion was just under 1/16 inch (0.05"). Precipitation tapered to drizzle/freezing drizzle (depending upon surface) in the pre-dawn hours, but showers returned just prior to the 7 am observation time.

Freezing rain accretion: 0.10 inch. Total snow/sleet: 7.0 inches. Roads are treacherous. Current weather: freezing rain, with the temperature resolutely holding in the upper 20s.

On Feb. 13, freezing rain and freezing drizzle changed to a wind-driven drizzle by mid-morning. Drizzle was continuous until 3:30 pm, when sleet returned. Sleet quickly changed to wet snow, which accumulated 2.2" by 9 pm atop the original snowfall, which had settled into a 5-inch "Slurpee." Skies mostly cleared overnight, and the setting moon is on the horizon at observation.

Periods of light snow and flurries lasted until 2:30 pm, accompanied by increasing winds. There was no accumulation due to temperatures above the freezing mark. Remaining snow is frozen solid, and there was heavy frost this morning.

Snow has nearly ended at observation, with just a few flakes occurring alongside some freezing drizzle. Current temperature is 28 degrees F.

Northwesterly winds kicked up before daybreak, but only after a thick frost layer formed.

(As a side note, this observer was shocked to hear of the 49-vehicle, snow-induced, chain-reaction accident on I-81 on the morning of March 26 in Berkeley Co., WV, several miles north of the site of my former WV-BY-1 CoCoRaHS station. A nearly identical event occurred in southern Berkeley County on January 8, 2009, when I wrote: "squalls...wreaked havoc on travel... Due to the narrow, streamer-type nature of this event, very little snow fell to the north in Martinsburg or south in Winchester.")

A final burst of heavy rain (0.26") came through at 4 am on May 1 in the form of a brief thunderstorm. Considerable flash flooding occurred in Stafford County. In addition, nearby White Oak Run (a tributary of Muddy Creek and subsequently the Rappahannock River) rose well out of its banks. The event total has climbed to 4.60".

The nearby Rappahannock River at Fredericksburg crested about 4.3 feet above flood stage on the morning of May 1, inundating low-lying areas such as historic River Road in Stafford County. The river has not been so high in Fredericksburg since the aftermath of Hurricane Fran on September 8, 1996, when the high-water mark was 8.9 feet above flood stage.
