Didn't expect the amount of rain this site got. Very light drizzle continued from yesterday's update. Then about 6:30 in the evening rain really picked up with about .15 inches falling in less than 45 minutes...A good contender for the update's "heaviest precipitation" award. Not to be so as rain tapered off to scattered light drizzle with not much falling after 9:00 PM. Got some accumulation during the early morning hours until rain started falling more steady like around six in the morning. Then it really picked up with .42 inches falling in just over an hour. Rain gradually tapered off and by 10:00 AM it was back to light scattered drizzle which persisted through update time. It looks like most of the moisture had been wrung out of the system. Skies overnight varied between overcast and partial clearing. Since right before dawn cloud ceiling was low and thick with it finally thinning very late in the period. Less than 1 hour of sunshine was recorded. Temps were downright chilly with wind velocity and direction varied. Minor flooding due to enough rain falling again. |

Some light drizzle fell during early morning hours and then @ 5 AM rain started falling harder and then even harder with about .22 inches falling in about 45 minutes. Fairly significant system including rain and wind and cool enough temps to put snow in all the mountain passes. Several waves of precipitation. The First one adding less than .10 to daily total and lasting about 1.5 hours with showers tapering off the light drizzle before midnight and staying steady but light until around 5 in the morning with the light stuff adding perhaps .05 to total. Just before 5 another decent shot adding about .15 to total and lasting slightly more than one hour. Basically not much fell between 6 and 10 in the morning with the "heaviest" total kicking in then adding another .15 inches. There was about a 30 minute break and then really steady rain fell straight from 11:30 AM until update period with around .63 inches falling...Starting out slower and then picking up before slowly tapering off again. Winds were significant too with several gusts in excess of 50 mph topping out at 55 mph with average wind speed of more than 22 mph. Westerly winds were somewhat odd for a November storm. No sunshine with heavy cloud cover and temps cooling off through the afternoon. Light rain continues through update time with enough rain falling recently to create some minor field and street flooding locally. |

Had to think some about the heaviest precipitation portion since once the rain picked up in the early afternoon it stayed pretty steady right up until about 15 minutes ago when it started to taper off. Then nothing much until just after 2 in the morning when light but steady drizzle fell until 10 or so when rain pretty much stopped. Then about half past noon it started falling again and continued real steady like right through update time with about .48 inches falling during this time. Then about half past nine at night it really picked up slightly easing an hour later but continuing for a couple hours after midnight. Another set of showers fell between 8 and 9:30 in the morning before the skies broke and the sun came out for the tune of over 6 hours. Then the constant breezy westerly winds really picked up with multiple gusts over 40 mph. Temps dropped as well as clear and colder weather moves in. This really cold and windy weather is supposed to continue well into tomorrow with temps forecasted to not reach 40 degrees until at least Tuesday. Winds yesterday ended up averaging 29.7 mph or 311 miles of wind run. That makes the day perhaps the 3rd or 4th windiest day of all time at this weather site location. Temps remain cold with the low of 17 degrees. Highs never got out of the 20's and over the last 2 hours or so they've dropped some 8 degrees. As usual winds accompanied the snow causing drifting making the total amount hard to measure. Another factor was that temps were close to freezing and thus earlier in the day the snow stuck. Month of January finishes off dry like most of the month. Monthly total is about 60% of normal. Overcast skies in the evening became clear and stayed that way all day with almost 8 1/2 hours of sunshine. Monthly total of almost 100 hours is high. Breezy NE winds switched to the NW and eased early afternoon and now are once again very light. Monthly average wind speed of 8.9 mph is very light for this time of the year. Temps were cool again...Monthly average temp of 41 degrees with no temps below 30 or reaching the 50's. Barometric pressure is rising with monthly average @ 30.20 inches. Unseasonably cold as well with average temp of just over 29 degrees. Very dry as well with average humidity of @ 50% and average dew point of about 12 degrees. A grass fire started spontaneously in the salt water marsh behind my home two days ago most likely the result of things being super dry. This marsh is usually inundated with water at this time of the year. Predicted rain seems to always remain around 2 days out day after day... |

No measurable precipitation again. From Seattle and south they got from 2" to 8" of snow during the evening and overnight hours with not so much as a flurry falling here. Today we 'made up' for that when about 27 flurries fell over a 10 minute period middle afternoon. So with 1/3 of February effectively over no precipitation although the NWS 'promises' some in the near future. Temps remain cool...Not so cold as a few days ago but the high just in the mid 30's with the low in the high 20's. Temps falling currently and just above freezing. Very blustery throughout the whole update period. First shot of rain lasted a bit longer than 2 hours with then just light drizzle or nothing until right before noon. Winds picked up big time and followed immediately by rain...Fairly hard rain which chased the dogs inside. As far as the heaviest rain I chose the middle option. I could have gone for the first 30 minute shot which totaled .13 inches. The duration I decided on totaled .22 inches or an even longer option of 95 minutes which totaled .29 inches. There was no real break in precipitation during the whole 95 minute period. Rain stopped a half an hour or so later with .02 more in the gauge. Then the sun came out totaling almost 3 hours worth. Temps were cool with more snow in the mountains....About 9 feet or more in the last week which is badly needed. Strong winds continue through update with average daily wind speed of 25 mph and monthly of almost 16 1/2 mph. More of this in the forecast. Tough day to come up with anything accurate. Wet snow/sleet fell all evening and into the early morning hours. Temps were in the mid to low 30's but stayed just above freezing until about 2 in the morning. Thus while some snow stuck to the grassy areas and the deck and BBQ etc other places it just kept melting. This ended up being about .36 of the total amount of precipitation. Temps fell below freezing and by the time I left for work about 4:30 in the morning it was sticking to the streets with temps about 31 degrees. Temps fell very slowly and gradually during the whole period finally ending up around 29 degrees at update. Winds switched to the NE about 8 o'clock last evening and have stayed from that direction and freshened past the midnight hour. All day they've been steady and blustery with average wind speed so far for the day of 23 mph. Windy conditions of course caused snow to drift. I took several sample heights throughout my yard ranging from about 5 inches all the way up to 10 and decided upon about 6 1/2 inches. Snow was rather wet and with that moisture content contributed the .72 to the update's total. Heaviest precipitation was very approximate. Other data I did the best I could. Dogs did love the snow which is always a bonus. |

By the end of this update period the sun was shining and most hard surface area snow accumulation had melted (the areas I use to measure the amount fallen). Freezing rain fell through yesterday's update period at a consistent clip finally tapering off late evening and stopping in the early morning hours. Enough freezing rain fell to freeze up both of my anemometers for almost 10 hours negating some significant wind data. By day break skies were mostly clear and the sun shown all day long melting enough of the snow and along with everything else caused inevitable minor street and field flooding. With all the approximate snowfall totals I'm relatively certain that the aggregate precipitation totals from this event are basically accurate....Confirmed partially by 2 Davis weather station rain gauges recording the snow melt totals in their large buckets. I used this data to confirm that my snow melt totals and rain totals in the CoCoRaHS rain gauge were believable since all totals ended up being very close. One thing is for sure is that this site does not do very well dealing with snowfall since it's never very clean or consistent. |

On another note the massive landslide 40 miles to the SE in Oso, Snohomish County Washington is a reminder of the power of water. What's turning out to be the wettest March on record saturated the ground enough to take down the whole side of a mountain literally wiping out a whole community. 3 or 4 different times were contenders for the heaviest precipitation period. The time I ended up with got .21 inches in that 25 minutes. Less than an hour before this and with just 10-15 minutes time parting the 2 periods .20 fell in about 45 minutes. The previous evening starting around 9:15 and ending about 9:45 PM .22 fell. Nevertheless enough has fallen in the past 3 days to cause some unseasonable local minor street and field flooding. Rain has stopped and overcast skies cleared with around 6 hours of sunshine since noon. Temps have warmed some but still cooler than normal with winds becoming light. |

After almost 2 weeks without any rain in some 8 hours more rain falls than during any day year to date. The fact that this happens in late May is unusual as is that May has more rain than January. Once the rain stopped the sun came out and the sun shone bright throughout the rest of the day. Sunset has clear skies. Winds were light and temps about normal for this type of the day. WOW! It rained harder at this site than perhaps ever before during that 25 minute period around the 10 PM mark. 3/4 of an inch of rain fell during that period when the skies literally opened up. One lightning strike hit so close that the thunder happened at the same instant and shook our home. Unlike most thunderstorms that seemingly was the only strike plus the wind didn't pick up all that much. Before that we had several smaller sets of showers pass through which on any other day could have been classified as the "heaviest precipitation" for the update period but not this time. After this hardest shot things tapered off with the rain coming to a stop for good before 11 PM. Mostly cloudy skies continued before breaking up late in the morning with skies clear and sun shining bright since the noon hour. Enough rain fell in a short enough period of time to cause some minor local street and field flooding despite the fact that no rain fell previous to this and yesterday's totals for some three weeks. |

No rain. Just like yesterday, today had a decent amount of overnight fog. Yesterday it burned off before noon. Today fog formed shortly after sunset and didn't burn off until middle afternoon. Very light winds and cool temps as well. |

Precipitation most likely started as dew from heavy overnight fog. Then rain showers started mid morning ending just past noon. Some short sun breaks in the afternoon with otherwise mostly cloudy skies. Temps were mild and winds breezy. |
