The first time since the end of June that the inner tube of the rain gauge was full! We had two pretty good thunder storms in the past 24 hrs, one yesterday PM around 2PM and the other this AM before 4:00. It really washed out the road the worst since early summer. Time for the trusty DR Grader that really does a great job smoothing out the ditches. |

The frost was on the pumpkin this AM at 25 degrees, the coldest of the season. There was white frost on the grass, and the last of the plants are dead. At least the sun is shining in a brilliant blue October sky. It started to snow (a little rain mixed in) around 7AM when the temp was 41 degrees, and continued until 10AM when it was already 38 degrees and falling rapidly. This AM was 18 degrees. We now have a coating of white that is going to remain for most of the week! Too early for this, but if it stays, the deer hunters will be happy. Both neighbors sighting in their guns the past couple of days. I saw 9 deer yesterday, and have started to feed them again. The DNR will probably lock me up, but I really don't care. |

Took the rain gauge in after the last snow. Did not expect a lot of rain this late in the season. A snow board does not measure rain very well!!It started to rain sometime in the PM and several rather wicked thunder storms passed through until well after bed time (10PM CDT). Some of the lightning was very high up, but scary just the same. We had water in the basement again like it was in late June, so my best guess is we had about an inch and a half or more of rain. It kept up and was still raining at 7 AM. Since I have 3 gauges, I decided to put out the broken one (just cracked on the top, so sill capable of holding rain), out. It is supposed to get much colder today. The AM temp was a balmy 54 degrees. Well above the normal high for this date. |

Woke up to a white world today. Rain mixed with snow at bedtime turned to snow later. Quite cold at 29 degrees this AM which is actually 4 degrees above normal for this date. I do remember Nov 22nd 1963, only because older son was a small baby born in Sept., 1963. We were living in a upstairs flat in Platteville where the university tower is now located. How the campus has grown in some 50 years!! |

This reminds me of the 60's when it would be 30 below for a week. I was teaching, and had to go out every morning with a young baby to a car that might not start even tho we kept the battery in the house. A mixture of just about every form of precip. It was a thick mist most of the morning, then turned to a light rain with some ice beads mixed in, then more rain. The sidewalks, etc are covered with a layer (about 1mm) of a beaded ice, so isn't too slippery to walk on. There was some what I would call "frozen fog" covering the trees on the north side of the field. Actually very pretty. The AM temp was a warm 31 degrees under an overcast sky.
There was a pool of water in the deer feeder, so there was quite a bit of rain accumulation. |

The ice coating on the sidewalk still has not melted and remains dangerous to walk on as is the driveway. The beastly cold and wind did not materialize today. It was cold at -7 degrees but there was little wind. We did get some snow later in the day, but unable to measure because of the gusty winds that either blew it off the snow board or caused it to drift onto the other places I could measure. My best guess is a couple of tenths at the most. The wind gusts about supper time were really bad. In fact we had warning from NWS that we were to have blizzard conditions and most schools were closed around here today. Those poor kids will be going to school in July at this rate!! |

There was still school, and yes, all of the rural kids were bused, few lived in the village. We are running low on firewood now and will have to cut down some trees soon. The propane (LP) furnace runs every morning when the house temp drops below 64 degrees. The crows are all excited about harassing the owl who also bothers the blue jays. Glad that many of my cardinals are back in the feeders after being absent much of the winter for whatever reason. Could it be the feral cats we so generously feed?? The melted core value was obtained by melting the core from a piece of PVC pipe the same diameter as the measuring tube, melting the snow and weighing it as I would if I used the marked tube. The depth was measured with a yard stick. (not real scientific, but an estimate of the core moisture). |

It is sunny and cool today with a temp of 27 degrees and a clear blue sky. Yesterday was very cold and windy; reminded me of the 30+ years I spent in Milwaukee by the big lake. They have just two seasons, summer and winter. I always longed for a warm spring that never came. This year reminds me of those years. It snowed off and on part of the morning, but warmed up enough to melt most of it, but traces remain in the shady spots. |

We had quite the storms last night. It started after 4 PM and lasted well past midnight. The whole sky was lit up for hours with almost continuous lightning and thunder, tool. We did not get any hail, but from what I heard on the NOAA radio, areas in Iowa and WI got golf ball size hail from many storms. No water in the basement this time. I wonder about the Kickapoo. There were many storms to our north. Not cold enough to snow yet at 45 degrees. |

Woke up to a winter wonderland today. The temp was at freezing. After an afternoon and night of continuous rain fall, we had almost 3" in two days plus almost an inch of snow. Yes, I have a puppy, and he is sometimes an early riser. The older he gets, the worse he seems to behave. Drove along the Mississippi on the way to Prairie last PM. It was high, but have seen it much higher. Some of the islands where people camp in the summer were under water, but the RR tracks were still high and dry. I have seen it much worse. I was in Boscobel, and they were under a watch around 4PM, but no severe weather, just a lot of rain, thunder and some vicious lightning. We had a strike here that took out the phones and the internet. The lightning has been particularly bad in there last few storms!! |

A little rain in the form of a brief shower came from what looked like a large storm on the radar. We are still at a moisture deficit since no rain fell in July, and not that much in August. We drove through the neighbor's corn field, and it looked pretty good and so did the alfalfa planted between the corn strips. It has remained green in spite of the lack of moisture.
