Took 15 minutes to put the fire out. happened 3:30 am. they had a smoke alarm and it woke them up in time to get everyone out. They had to be treated for smoke inhalation but are okay.apartment however is unlivable.The cause...never ever use an extension cord with a space heater...the extension cord over-heated and caught fire. The American Red Cross has put them up in an apartment for 2 weeks to give them time to find another place to live.Smoke alarms save lives! check its batteries and make sure it works. Also give to the ARC...known for blood donations, they also respond to people who have had house fires every nine seconds in the U.S.

A strong area of low pressure is moving through the Great Lakes region and will bring a cold front through our area by Friday morning before sunrise. Ahead of this cold front, winds out of the South will stay steady at 15 to 25 mph with gusts reaching 30-50 mph after midnight. The strongest winds will come with the front itself, especially if any thunderstorms hold together. A few storms may be severe with wind gusts up to 58 mph or higher, but widespread wind of this strength is not likely. Due to a very soggy ground, this may lead to spotty power outages. Also, a period rain will move East through the early morning and bring most a quarter to three quarters of an inch in about 2 hours. This may lead to minor flooding, especially around swollen creeks and streams. Wet weather will end well before noon and skies begin to clear Friday. Temps will drop into the low 40's in the morning, then return to near 50 in the afternoon. Winds stay gusty from the West through the afternoon. Winds lighten up overnight, but a breeze will linger, keeping many temps in the upper 20's to low 30's. Some of the deeper, sheltered valleys may get into the mid 20's. Patchy black ice is possible from earlier rains and snow melt. Saturday looks like a beautiful day with sunshine and high temps reaching the 50's to near 60's. An approaching cold front will push more clouds in Sunday and some wet weather Sunday night, but overall we are still looking at a nice day. A southwesterly flow will keep Sunday on the mild side with highs back into the 50's for most. Patchy high clouds linger ahead of a weak cold front that moves through Sunday night with scattered rain and snow showers.Precipitation is looking light and should end very early Monday, but it will be cooler with highs in the lower 40's. Early this morning, we will see rain changing to freezing rain and sleet from NW to SE. This will then turn to snow (also from NW to SE). This will then turn to snow (also from NW to SE) starting around 5-7. Snow will be heavy @ times this morning, especially along and north of the I-64 corridor. Snow gradually tapers off this afternoon and early this evening. Snow accumulations for this storm will be highest NW and lowest further South. Highest totals will generally range from 6-10 inches, although some locations may pick up a foot or more. Further South, totals will generally range from 3-6 inches. Travel will be difficult and dangerous today, and it would be best to stay at home unless absolutely necessary. Because of ice accumulations, power outages can't be ruled out. Skies clear tonight, but it will be a frigid night as temperatures fall down to either side of 0. Sunshine continues tomorrow with highs in the 30's. Now the WVVA in depth weather forecast for the remainder of our week...with cold air in place and an approaching upper level disturbance and cold front, snow is looking likely going into Tuesday. Clouds increase tonight and snow showers become possible after midnight, but look more likely after 4 am. By the morning commute, many will have just a dusting to 1/2 inch on the ground. Scattered snow showers may mix with rain in the afternoon as temps come above freezing, allowing for some melting. The trickiest travel time may occur later in the day around dinner time as a cold front moves through. Heavier bands of snow are possible with the front, which could bring a quick 1-2 inches across the region depending on our temperature at that time (hill tops that are colder may get 3-4 inches-mainly Greenbrier/Summers counties). Steadier, heavy rain is expected through the morning ahead of the cold front, then scattered showers may linger in the afternoon behind the front. High temperatures for the day reach around 60 and winds may gust to 30 mph at times. This front will stall to our East Friday night, allowing for clouds to linger and lows to remain mild. WVVA weather forecast update: "a strong ridge of high pressure continues to bring mainly dry and hot conditions to our area. tonight will be another mild night with low temps ranging in the 60's with a few near 70. Wednesday may be the hottest day in this stretch with highs climbing into the upper 80's to mid 90's late in the day. The fog should lift by mid-morning, giving way to lots of sunshine and some clouds as highs range from the upper 70's to the mid 80's.Lows tomorrow night reach the low 60's with the return of valley fog. A few showers and storms are possible Wednesday. The rain we could see from this activity will be beneficial as we are still a bit dry in places. Highs will hit the low 80's and lows reach the low 60's. The Thursday through Monday time period is a little tough to forecast in term of rainfall. The computer models have been having a hard time painting a clear picture. Just yesterday it looked like the occasional afternoon popup shower/storm would be possible during this time frame, but now that is looking less likely. We need the rain, but at least the lesser of two evils is that we could experience pleasant weather through next Monday with highs in the upper 70's and lows in the upper 50's.

Our WVVA Weather summary...After a very chilly start, our Tuesday warmed up with abundant sunshine and highs hit the mid 70's West of I-77 and mid to upper 60's East due to more clouds. Cloud cover will stick around tonight with more clearing possible after midnight. If skies can clear out, patchy fog is possible. Temperatures overnight won't be as chilly, but many return to the mid and upper 40's. Wednesday will begin with some sun, but more clouds return in the afternoon. low pressure continues to move up the East coast bringing waves of clouds to our area. Rain with this system mainly stays East, but Wednesday night into early Thursday, some showers may reach just West of the eastern WV/VA border into Giles, Monroe, and Greenbrier counties. Clouds East of I-77, will build again Wednesday afternoon and Thursday, keeping temps in the 60's to near 70 but with more sun West- highs should get back to mid 70's. High pressure returns for Friday and the weekend, bringing temps back to the 70's for all the good sun. High pressure to our SE remains in control tonight and Tuesday, keeping our weather dry and quiet. High clouds continue to drift through the area ahead of an approaching cold front, but with partial clear skies and light winds overnight, it will get chilly with lows ranging in the upper 30's to low 40's. Patchy clouds and a few sprinkles are possible in the morning Tuesday, but we end up with more sun in the afternoon along with another warm day. Highs Tuesday will range from the upper 60's to mid 70's. A cold front will linger to our North Wednesday allowing for more clouds North of I-64 and lots of sun to the South. Highs should climb into the 70's where there is more sun, but the cloudier spots may get stuck in the 60's. This front will sag Southward Thursday and a few waves will bring periods of showers. With that said here is my multi-day report. Rainelle, WV. up until 7/23/14 has had pretty good summer weather. Last night roughly after 10:15 PM...a hellacious severe t-storm came through Rainelle, WV. With it came torrential rainfall, dime sized hail, high winds, and as an added bonus- lightning thrown in. Also caused a power outage. Usually I send significant weather reports to cocorahs and NWS receives them. last night, I called Phil, NWS Blacksburg Va's. warning meteorologist directly. I gave him my important info, and he said they were monitoring a severe thunderstorm and knew it was headed our way. T-storm was capable of producing high winds, heavy rainfall, and dime sized hail. Phil spoke to me to see what weather was happening on the ground so they could warn people ahead of it what to expect. it made me feel good to know I helped people last night. I encourage everyone to get involved in volunteering in cocorahs plus take the free 2 hour class for your local National Weather Service to become a severe weather spotter to help people in your communities. All day today, I've heard reports of trees down, how extensive our power outage was, and etc. The storm even blew away the red bricks and vacuum at our local car wash in the center of Rainelle. Was it an EF1 tornado- I wonder.

Spencer Adkins, senior meteorologist for WVNS 59 said a whole slew of showers were lined up right along the Ohio river but were fizzing out before getting to our area. WVVA weather for the remainder of the work week into the weekend...An upper level disturbance will be passing through the area this evening from the NW and may bring a few isolated showers to towns mainly north of I-64 early tonight. Over-night any clouds should decrease and give way to clear skies and more cool temps. Over-night lows dip back into the low to mid 50s for most with valley fog possible by morning. High pressure is in control Thursday, giving us another dry day with sun and clouds mixed. As the high moves east, warmer temps will be a result with highs on either side of 80. The upper level low to our north will drift farther to the west, changing our air flow to a southwesterly direction. This will bring in warmer temps and higher dew points starting Thursday. However, a few disturbances passing through the area thursday night into friday morning and over the weekend will bring back the chance for showers and a few t-storms. Showers are looking likely friday and with mostly cloudy skies, temps should stay in the low 70's. We get a bit warmer over the weekend, but the chance for showers and storms continues. At the surface, a stalled front lingers along the coast, but the high pressure noses into our area, keeping us mainly dry monday to wednesday. An approaching cold front will bring rain back to us by the end of the week.

WVVA weather summary- It was a warm wrap up to September with highs in the 70's to low 80's this afternoon. Tonight, temperatures fall quickly with the help of clear skies and light to calm winds. Overnight lows return to the lower to mid 50's with patchy fog redeveloping in valleys- especially river valleys through Wednesday morning. A weak front will bring a few clouds Wednesday, but overall we are looking at another nice day. Warm temperatures continue through Thursday with good sunshine and a westerly wind flow. An approaching cold front will start bringing clouds in Thursday night, then a few showers Friday morning. Most of the showers and even a few thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon Friday and some heavy rain is possible. We dry out Friday night and Saturday, but patchy clouds and areas of drizzle are possible- especially in the mountains. It will be significantly cooler Saturday with highs in the 50's and gusty NW winds. High pressure will help to clear skies Saturday night and temperatures will dip into the 30's for most, with valley frost possible. Sunday looks sunnier with highs around 60F.
