Unusual to have the board and gauge reading match, as there was a layer of ice at the bottom of the snowboard. Snowcover very uneven: patio and driveway had hardly any snow while the snow-board had 2.8" The gauge had a large rim of snow on top of it & this winter I'm changing my "flatening tool" from a paint-scraper to a kitchen board scraper; larger area worked very well this morning.

Brief power outage at 12:25pm. Measured the 0.1" from the snowboard, but it was too little to get an accurate core measurement. Uncleared part of the snowboard measured 7.7" but I reported the average from there and samples from around the yard = 7.0"
11/29/2014 8:00 AM 0.01 T M 6.5 M Mostly sunny, 13° 24hr: 12/33° Yesterday some of the snow in the trees and on utility lines started blowing down; think that accounted for some of the 0.01" in the gauge. We had flurries, but not enough to register more than a "T." A lot of snow is still up there, and when it falls it doesn't "clomp" down, it flutters similar to actual snow. Going over Hamburg Mountain yesterday at 1pm, was in white out conditions on Route 23 as wind began blowing the snow from all the trees on the mountains down on the highway. Still measuring 7.0" on board; yard a little less.

Interesting: after measuring the liquid in the gauge this morning, I noticed all the drops remaining on the inside. "Because every drop counts" --I decided to scrape down the inside of the gauge (using a foot long plastic ruler) and measure that. 1/26/2015 7:30 AM 0.04 0.3 0.04 7.0 0.79 Snowing, 15° 24hr: 14/39° Now that we're getting some serious snowfalls, I can see that having a new puppy who loves playing in snow, makes finding undisturbed locations for 'representative samples' and SWE cores a challenge! Actual average snowdepth = 6.8"
1/27/2015 8:00 AM 0.25 1.4 M 9.0 1.09 Light snow, 19° 24hr: 15 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /23° Dropped the container with the snowboard sample while clearing the snowboard; so I took a SWE of the snowpack from the average depth of 8.8": 1.09" SWE. New Snow of 1.4" is I think under-reported due to blowing snow off the snowboard & past gauge top. Very light, fluffy snow. Mountain Creek is on the other side of our ridge-line; with the travel ban now lifted they must be looking forward to a great day!
1/28/2015 7:30 AM 0.05 0.5 0.06 8.7 M Sunny, 10° 24hr: 8/25° Storm total for the four day storm is only 2.6" of measured new snow, although yesterday's measurement was reduced by the blowing snow from the board and gauge.
1/29/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 8.0 M Sunny, calm, 2° 24hr: 1/30°
1/30/2015 7:45 AM 0.12 1.6 0.12 8.7 M Light snow, 25° 24hr: 2 [yesterday's a.m. reset] /35°
1/31/2015 8:00 AM 0.01 0.7 M 8.2 M Sunny, 5° 24hr: 5/33° Snow continued through the morning ending approx 11am. Then wind, which by this morning had blown the snowboard clean. The new snowfall amount is a guess based on what I was shoveling late morning, but I didn't use a ruler to actually measure. The Snow on Ground value is difficult because of all the blowing around of snow and puppy pawprints everywhere!
2/1/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.9 M Cloudy, 20° 24hr: 8° [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /24° Was at a Winter Festival at HIgh Point yesterday; that spot is like the rest of NJ winter weather kicked up a notch! Saw the weather equipment on the building at the base of the monument maintained by Nick Stefano used to transmit H.P. data.
2/2/2015 7:30 AM 0.93 6.9 0.88 14.5 2.23 Snow, sleet, & freezing rain, 25° 24hr: 20/35° SWE updated at 10.06am after melting: 2.23"
2/3/2015 8:00 AM 0.17 1.6 0.33 13.7 M Cloudy, 10° 24hr: 7/26° Definite ice layer in this morning's samples. Don't understand the extreme difference between the gauge & board; given all the "non-snow" winter precip, I would have expected the gauge to be the higher number.
2/4/2015 7:10 AM 0.00 0.0 M 13.0 M Overcast, 21° 24hr: 9/28° Glad the sky was so clear early in the evening to see the beautiful conjunction of Jupiter and the full Moon (aptly named The Snow Moon). Also glad it clouded up, so the overnight temps were not as cold!
2/5/2015 8:00 AM 0.06 0.7 0.07 14.3 M Snowing, 22° 24hr: 21/35° At the limits of my 15" metal ruler; switching to a yardstick. Snowcover now covers the low electric fence we have around the vegetable gardens.
2/6/2015 8:00 AM T T M 14.0 M Mostly sunny, 5° 24hr: 1/25° Snow pack is 1 & 1/2" of powder over an ice layer, with powder to the ground. "Because every drop counts" -the gauge snow melted to exactly two drops of water.
2/7/2015 8:00 AM T T M 13.5 M Overcast, 22° 24hr: 5 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /26° Snow flurries around noon yesterday; no accumulation; no evidence this morning in gauge or on snow-board.
2/8/2015 8:00 AM 0.01 0.1 0.01 13.0 M Overcast, 29° 24hr: 22/42° (first high temps over 40° in quite a while). Period of moderately heavy snow late yesterday morning. Bird-song this morning! A Carolina Wren singing :-)
2/9/2015 7:30 AM 0.28 0.1 M 12.0 2.30 Freezing rain, 24° 24hr: 24/39° FR (& a period of sleet around 5:30am) left a glaze on all surfaces. SWE from the snowboard N/A: had to use the side of the metal ruler to scrape glaze off to the clean the board. New snowfall accumulation is an approximation, ruler couldn't make a dent in it. Had to punch the gauge off the post from the bottom & scrape down inside of the tube for melted value. Consistency of snow different now; no longer powder, but heavy & wet under the glaze; I use a bench-scraper to dig next to the tube when measuring the SWE of the snowpack, which lifted out clean "bricks" of snow while digging down to the ground next to the tube to be able to slide the bench-scraper under it to lift out a clean core. Our dog can now walk on top of the snow, the ice is so thick it supports her weight.
2/10/2015 7:30 AM 0.17 1.1 0.15 13.1 M Overcast, 22° 24hr: 20/26° Another layer of ice from yesterday's FR, topped with 1.1" of snow with a slight glaze on that. Winter weather at its peskiest to measure...
2/11/2015 7:45 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 12.5 M Sunny, 14° 24hr: 14/39° Finally, a sunny morning with the sunlight shining in the ice in all the trees! But even with yesterday's gray skies the beginning of birdsong in the morning was a joy.
2/12/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 12.0 M Overcast, 25° 24hr: 14 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /38° With temps briefly above freezing was able to chop up some of the ice on the paths and driveway.
2/13/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 12.0 M Sunny, 0° 24hr: 0/36° Haven't seen zero in a while. Snowpack holding at an average of 12" -and poking through that crust, even with a metal ruler, is getting really difficult. Hope I don't have to resort to making a "starter incision" with the ice chopper again. Going to the NJ State Flower Show today!!!
2/14/2015 7:30 AM T T M 12.0 M Overcast, calm, 10° 24hr: minus 1/20° Have now dipped into a different plant hardiness zone with -1° First flurries started just before 7:30am while coming in to send this report.
2/15/2015 8:00 AM 0.14 2.0 0.14 14.2 M Cloudy, windy, 7° 24hr: 5/23° Snow really blowing around on the ground this morning. Yesterday a.m.'s -1° was the first below zero of this winter; last year we had six of them. (MG note: changed new snow SWE from 1.40" to 0.14", as suspect this was what was intended. Original report submitted 2/15/2015 9:21 AM)
2/16/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 14.0 2.11 Sunny, -5° 24hr: -6 /15° Six below zero breaks the -4° record 1/4/14 here going back decades (longer than my garden journals). I dug the SWE core at sunset last night when it had already dropped to -2°. Hope I didn't inadvertently take the core in a previously dug hole; because this week's SWE = 2.11 & last week's = 2.30 with additional snowfall in between. With all the blowing snow, it's very hard to tell.
2/17/2015 8:00 AM 0.06 1.7 0.11 15.0 M Light snow, 12° 24hr: -5° [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /20° Beautiful, large, angled, fluffy snowflakes. The snowpack has a 4 1/2" layer of powder; 0.5" of hard ice layer; and 10" of soft snow right to the ground.
2/18/2015 8:00 AM T T M 14.5 M Sunny, -1° 24hr: -3 /29° So much for the Olde Farmers Almanac note on February 14th: "Winters back breaks." Looks like Winter was just getting going!
2/19/2015 8:00 AM T T M 14.5 M Cloudy, 10° 24hr: -3° [just after yesterday a.m.'s reset] /35° A fresh light dusting in the evening resulted in 3 drops from the gauge.
2/20/2015 8:00 AM T T 0.00 14.5 M Sunny, -6° 24hr: -7 /20° Snow flurries while I was out with the dog after dinner; if I hadn't been outside then, I would have missed it.
2/21/2015 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 14.0 M Cloudy, 9° 24hr: -8° /18° Temperatures rose 3° just in the time it took to walk to the gauge and back! Minus 8 is the lowest temp this season, with eight zeros or below in February. So much for "Winter's back breaks."
2/22/2015 8:00 AM 0.36 3.4 0.38 17.0 M Overcast, 27° 24hr: 9/27° Lost my 15" steel ruler in the snowpack; will have to "promote" myself to a metal yardstick, which I haven't used because it doesn't measure in tenths of an inch, but traditional 1/8s, 1/4s, 1/2s, etc. Also had to clear a path to our garden shed to remove a spade, to get the SWE tomorrow morning. Snow is beyond the limits of the bench-scraper I usually use to dig and slide under the tube for core readings.
2/23/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 16.0 3.20 Cloudy, 15° 24hr: 14/45° Took the core sample at sunset yesterday; much easier leaving the extra gauge in the kitchen sink overnight to melt naturally if no precip happened overnight! Getting really hard to find undisturbed parts of the yard -where the snow hasn't either blow away or drifted up. Top 6" is powder.
2/24/2015 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 16.0 M Sunny, -9° 24hr: -9 /22° Another new record low here. Nine zero degree or below in the second half of February. Many neighbors with frozen pipes and water lines. Spring is going to be very sweet this year...
2/25/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 15.5 M Sunny, 12° 24hr: -9 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /30° Noticeable increase in bird song and activity, despite the temperatures.
2/26/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 15.0 M Overcast, 16° 24hr: 12 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /36° The morning radar shows it should be snowing, but it's not.
2/27/2015 8:00 AM 0.02 0.5 0.02 16.0 M Sunny, 10° 24hr: 7/26° The math on the snow cover seems odd: measured 15.0 yesterday; we had 0.5" of fresh snow; and the snowcover today is 16.0" But that's what the measured snowpack is. (Can't wait to ditch the yardstick and go back to my 15" metal ruler!)
2/28/2015 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 16.0 M Sunny, 4° 24hr: 3/32° February Total precip: 2.20"; Total Snowfall: 17.0" Onward, to March!
3/1/2015 7:30 AM T T M 16.0 M Overcast, with the first, fine flakes just beginning to fall while going out to the gauge, 14° 24hr: 4° [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /37° Tomorrow morning's core reading should be very interesting. Glad I'm now using a yardstick.
3/2/2015 7:30 AM 0.26 2.1 0.26 17.7 3.50 Freezing rain, 24° 24hr: 14° [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /27° While melting the core sample it changed back to light snow. Top 7" of core is snow; 0.4" ice layer; 10.3" to the bottom is snow. Note: our location is part of the Wallkill River drainage basin, not either the Delaware or Pompton river systems. Also, when the core is completely full like this, adding hot water and subtracting that amount isn't effective; scooping the snow/ice contents out of the outer gauge and into a 4c. pyrex measuring cup to microwave takes far less time.
3/3/2015 8:00 AM T T M 17.5 M Cloudy, 14° 24hr: 9/38° There was nothing in the gauge this morning, however there was freezing rain, followed by snow for an hour and a half after yesterday morning's TOO.
3/4/2015 8:00 AM 0.66 2.0 0.80 18.5 M Cloudy, 35° 24hr: 14 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /35° We had 2" on the ground before the changeover to sleet & freezing rain, with 1.8" left on the snowboard this morning. Don't understand the difference between the gauge (0.66) and core from the board (0.80) unless the pounding needed to break through the top thick glaze of ice to get the sample, also loosened some of the bottom glaze that I haven't been able to get off since the last ice storm. Also running out of "clean" places to measure total snow on ground and SWEs.
3/5/2015 8:00 AM 0.27 2.3 0.17 20.5 M Snowing, 25° 24hr: 25/46° Yesterday's melting seemed to be limited to dark surfaced areas; the total snow on the ground INCREASED from 18.5" to 20.5" Impressive slabs of snow/ice that have been on the roof all winter came sliding off in the afternoon. This new metal roof eliminated 'ice dams'!
3/6/2015 8:00 AM 0.16 2.0 0.20 20.0 M Sunny, 8° 24hr: 2/25° Tried to check the pond bubbler yesterday but couldn't find it under the drifts of snow.
3/7/2015 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 20.0 M Sunny, 8° 24hr: 7/34° Despite the continuing cold and snow cover, bird song this morning was glorious! I hope all the early blooming bulbs like snowdrops aren't blooming now, underneath 20" of snow/ice....
3/8/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 19.5 M Cloudy, 33° 24hr: 8° [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /33° Birdsong in the morning is wonderful!
3/9/2015 8:00 AM T T M 18.5 5.08 Sunny, 36° 24hr: 21/46° Nothing in the gauge or on the board this morning, but it snowed for just about an hour around noon yesterday. The reported SWE from the core seems high; I wonder if in digging prior cores I might have shoveled one of the two thick layers of ice that make up this snowpack onto the place where I took this morning's core? To go from 3.50" last Monday to 5.08" today seems improbable.
3/10/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 17.0 M Hazy, 25° 24hr: 24/52° Red sun emerging on the eastern horizon. "Red sun at morning ..." Glad we had a day of steady, slow melt before any rain arrives on top of this 17" snowpack.
3/11/2015 8:00 AM 0.26 0.0 M 15.5 M Overcast, 38° 24hr: 25 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /49° All of yesterday's warmth only knocked off 1.5" from the snowpack. Still no open ground. I am so ready for SpringFest, which starts tomorrow and runs through the weekend!
3/12/2015 3:10 PM 0.00 0.0 M 13.0 M Sunny, 41° 24hr: 32/56° Steady melt-off continues. Late report today with an unexpected death in the family.
3/13/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 12.5 M Sunny, 20° Min/max since yesterday 3pm's reset: 20/50°
3/14/2015 8:00 AM 0.24 0.0 M 12.5 M Raining, 35° 24hr: 20 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /47° Snowpack is still 100% except were the dark pathways are melting back a little. Measuring in a representative, sunny part of the yard but snow on ground is still 12.50"
3/15/2015 8:00 AM 0.30 0.0 M 9.0 M Overcast, 35° 24hr: 34/45° Reduced the reported snow on ground from the measured 11" to 9" to account for the areas where the snow is starting to recede (next to driveway, dark pathways, circles around large maples, and 13" away from the south wall of the house). Best guesstimate.
3/16/2015 7:10 AM T T M 6.0 M Mostly sunny, 29° 24hr: 29/39° A few brief flurries around noon yesterday. Continuing to do an approximation of Total Snow on Ground: ruler measured 9.5" but calculating the areas where snow is slowly retreating I'm reporting 6.0" Still 100% snow coverage.
3/17/2015 8:00 AM 0.05 0.0 M 4.5 M Light rain, 36° 24hrs: 28/51° Actual snow depth of 8.5 was "averaged" to 4.5" considering the areas where melting around paths and the south side of the house are revealing open ground. And there, the tops of crocuses are appearing! Everywhere else it's still 100% snowpack. Last slab if ice fell off our metal roof yesterday.
3/18/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 2.0 M Cloudy, 24° 24hr: 21/47° The yard is a moon-scape of frozen footprints, pawprints of solid ice this morning. Even with my Yak-tracs that I've been using for the past two months, there's no safe way to get to the undisturbed area that I've been measuring snow-on-the-ground. And there's no way my metal ruler would penetrate this. So 2" is my best guess, averaging the few bare areas (0) with the rest of the yard ( 3 - 4").
3/19/2015 8:00 AM T T M 2.0 M Sunny, 20° 24hr: 20/35" Shortly after TOR we had bursts of snow, some with huge individual flakes. Enough for a light dusting, which quickly disappeared.
3/20/2015 8:00 AM T T M 1.5 M Overcast, 26° 24hr: 20 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /40° Snow flurries on and off yesterday morning. Places in the stronger March sun managed to melt a little bit despite the cold temps.
3/21/2015 8:00 AM 0.34 3.6 0.31 4.5 M Cloudy, 28° 24hrs: 25/31°
3/22/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 3.0 M Mostly sunny, 26° 24hr: 25/42° More flocks of red-winged blackbirds passing through. To stock trout in the lake yesterday, had to break open a hole in the ice with sledge-hammers and ice choppers the night before, and the following morning shovel off 3.5" of fresh snow and then break through the 1/2" of fresh ice from re-freezing. Hard to believe all of the ice will be gone in two weeks (Opening Day Trout).
3/23/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 2.5 M Sunny, 19° 24hr: 15/40° No way to get a core: solid ice with a small layer of loose snow on top. Needed an ice-chopper yesterday to "shovel off" the first of the raised beds to warm under plastic for the early season crops.
3/24/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 2.0 M Sunny, 19° 24hr: 17/37° Snowpack is still 100% and is melting from the edges in: driveway, patio and slate walkways are getting wider, but judging from the few tops of perennials sticking out of the snow, the depth isn't budging much.
3/25/2015 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 2.0 M Sunny, with high cirrus clouds, 19° 24hr: 18/44° Paths in snow cover widening; the top of rocks bordering some perennial gardens and the pond are now showing.
3/26/2015 8:00 AM 0.04 0.0 0.00 1.0 M Mostly sunny, 35° 24hr: 19 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /45° Now we're making progress in the snowmelt. Down to an average depth of 1.0" Large "V" formations of geese flying overhead northward yesterday.
3/27/2015 8:00 AM 0.65 0.3 M 1.0 M Overcast, with glops of snow falling out of the trees, 33° 24hr: 32/52° Lots of lightning in the west as the storm front approached around 9pm last night. Even with my Yak-Tracs this morning on I slipped after collecting the board core sample, so that was lost this morning. Everything is white with fresh snow; if it weren't the end of March I might have said "Winter Wonderland."
3/28/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.5 M Hazy sun through high clouds, 25° 24hr: 25/42°
3/29/2015 8:00 AM T T M T M Sunny, 19° 24hr: 17/37° Snow moved through at 10:30pm and started to cover. Finally at the point where 1/2 of our yard is open ground and 1/2 is ice/extremely compressed snow, so reporting "T". The only place the dog falls through anymore is in the 18" against a SE facing rockwall.
3/30/2015 8:00 AM 0.02 0.2 0.02 0.5 M Overcast, 31° 24hr: 19 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /45° Began bringing patio and garden stuff out of the SunShed, but glad I left the snowboard in place. Another covering this morning...
3/31/2015 8:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 T M Sunny, 32° 24hr: 30/48° A lot of melt with the snowpack occurred yesterday, topped off with some rain around 9pm. Front sump pump is on. Snowdrops visible through the remaining ice shield around the pond. Pond still frozen solid. Ditto the lake.
4/1/2015 8:00 AM 0.27 2.4 0.25 2.0 M Cloudy, 25° 24hr: 23/40° Started as snow at 12:30pm; by evening roads were in terrible shape, until the town plows came through just before 8pm. Almost a full inch of snow was "standing" on top of the edge of the gauge; needed to do the 'flat surface whack' maneuver. Also, reported less total snow on ground (2.0") that new snowfall, because all of the dark surfaced areas (patio, walks, etc.) accumulated less snow than the snowboard (2.4") to average out the depth. March CoCoRaHS totals: precip = 3.25" and snowfall = 12.5" Sure seemed like more!
4/2/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 T M Hazy sun through high clouds, 27° 24hr: 25/49° Purple crocuses open on the south facing side of the house. Patches of snow remain in the usual spots, but yesterday's 2.4" mostly disappeared by mid afternoon.
4/3/2015 6:30 AM T 0.0 M 0.0 M Cloudy, 52°! 24hr: 27 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /63° The gauge was empty this morning, but I had observed light rain last night while letting the dog out.
4/4/2015 8:00 AM 0.68 0.0 M 0.0 M Mostly sunny, breezy, 39° 24hr: 39/61° Pounding rain moved through around 3am, but didn't last long. The front sump pump is on.
4/5/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Sunny, 37° 24hr: 30/48° Mucked out the pond and set up the waterfall/filtration system yesterday --before the toads and frogs arrive. Heard them peeping Friday night in nearby wetlands in Stockholm.

4/8/2015 8:00 AM 0.18 0.0 M 0.0 M Overcast, 37° 24hr: 37/54° With the first red bud tips of the maples in the gauge, decided it was time to put back up the inner gauge and the funnel. Although EdgeWeather is forecasting freezing rain Thursday am.
4/9/2015 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Overcast, 33° 24hr: 33/44° Cold and windy in the garden yesterday while dividing and moving around perennials. Still no frogs or toads in the pond. The lake is finally beginning to open up!

6/1/2015 8:00 AM 1.55 M M M M Overcast, 53° 24hr: 52/76. Thank God for rain! Today's total is not quite triple the entire rainfall for May. Came in bands: started just before OBS yesterday and lasted a half hour with 0.27", then was hot and humid until 1:45pm when another 0.17" came through. Back to hot and humid until around 8pm, this time with lots of T & L and dropping temps. Nice to see an over-flowed gauge after all the dry days! Hoping the pauses gave the ground a chance to moisten so the later rains could penetrate and not run off.

7/19/2015 8:00 AM T M M M M Sunny, 71° 24hr: 66/80° The gauge was bone dry this morning, but we had light rain for a while yesterday morning that wet the ground not under the large trees. But after collecting yesterday's sample I had to bring the funnel and inner gauge inside to clean after a bird pooped straight down the middle of the funnel bottom. By the color it had stained yesterday's 0.04" sample, I'd say it had been eating mulberries! If any measurable rain had fallen in the large outer gauge, it could have evaporated in yesterday's heat and sun.
7/20/2015 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, 75° 24hr: 71/85• A textbook "H H H" day. Watered the vegetable garden to cool down the plants as much as add moisture to the dry soil.
7/21/2015 7:00 AM T M M M M Overcast, 69° 24hr: 68/87° 2 drops fell on my way out to the gauge. What a difference a pond with fish in it makes regarding mosquitos! We were just across town at twilight at my brother's and were eaten alive standing in his driveway. Returning home to none, realized: the fish eat the larvae and the numerous toads and dragonflies eat the adult mosquitos. Good deal!
7/22/2015 7:00 AM 0.12 M M M M Sunny, 60° 24hr: 59/80° Thunder started rumbling in the west around 6pm and by 6:15 the rain started. Ground needed it.
