Yesterday was warm and sunny - good for golf - with the high reaching into the mid-70's. Later in the afternoon, there was a drop or two of rain. This morning, I felt a couple drops of mist on my face and hands as I checked the gauge.

Tomorrow morning we are forecast to have our first hard freeze which should stop the lawn from growing. Yesterday, we had just a few drops of rain (I think there were 17 drops, if I counted them correctly) as I was cleaning up the yard in the afternoon. It should warm up a bit next week as the Cubs knock off the Mets in 5 games. That is my prediction!

We were forecast to have our first hard freeze last night, but I think the clouds and perhaps the winds blowing directly from the north rather than the northwest brought the wind directly from over Lake Michigan to us creating only a 36.5° low overnight. It is forecast to be warmer next week when the Cubs return to Chicago for 3 games. Go Cubs!

Last night after dinner, rain came mainly in two bands. The first was lighter rain, but the second was more intense. It seems like more rain fell than what was captured in the gauge (0.19"). This could be due to the strong winds that came with the rain. It is still raining lightly this morning.

The new snow has settled and melted from the warmer temperatures yesterday, but the bottom has fallen out of the temp this morning. With 4.5" of snow measured on the ground and a 0.60" of water content from the measured core, we have a good deal of water in the remaining snow. Most of it should melt over the next couple of days.

Our small, usually dry retention pond is filled to overflowing with 6+" of water standing in it. Let's all donate to CoCoRaHS today!
12/28/2015 9:20 AM 0.24 M M M M Temp = 33.1°; Hum = 73%; Baro = 29.88" falling; Dew Pt. = 26.2°; What a mess! A 'wintery, frozen mix' is currently falling with rain, sleet, and snow all mixed together. The measurements from the gauge and the snow board are significantly different due to a couple of factors. First, part of the precipitation has been rain, but in addition we have ice build-up on the inside and outside of the gauge as well as a frozen clump of 'wintery mix' stuck to the board. This makes taking accurate measurements difficult. Therefore, please consider these readings more art than scientific fact.
12/29/2015 8:10 AM 1.82 0.2 M 0.8 M Temp = 34.7°; Hum = 98%; Baro = 29.68" rising; Dew Pt. = 34.2°; Yesterday, we experienced a frozen winter mix of sleet, snow, and rain which created flooding and transportation problems. During the night we received substantial rain which created large areas of field ponding and flooded streets. The snow report is mainly sleet. It differs from the snow board to the measurement field even though both were clear when the sleet started. The wind probably accounted for the difference.
12/30/2015 9:20 AM T T M 0.2 M Temp = 32.4°; Hum = 70%; Baro = 30.03" steady; Dew Pt. = 24.7°; A few tiny, light snow flakes are falling as of this reading. The little bit of water laden sleet and snow from yesterday has frozen hard making it difficult to get a total snow depth. There is grass showing in most places with a covering of frozen sleet/snow beneath the grass blades.

We must have had a brief flurry sometime, but I did not see it. The 'snow' on the ground remains a thin, solid crust of ice. Therefore, total snow and ice measurement is a guesstimate at best.

There are still a few flakes in the air as I took the measurement. Most of the time it was snowing moderately to heavily with a wind of 25+ mph whipping it up. It was difficult to measure since it drifted from a low of 6.0" to a high of 16.5". I think the 12.5" on the snow board is representative of the entire area. This was a heavy, dense snow which truly could be called "a widow-maker". I kept up with using my electric snow blower twice yesterday and once this morning, but when the City truck came and pushed a 3' bank of heavy, compacted snow across the end of my drive, I gladly paid a private snow plower to clean the end of the drive. My measurement for melted precipitation IS NOT ACCURATE since the gauge was filled (with some pockets) with snow to overflowing. I believe the core sample for the snow board (1.76") is a better water figure for this snow. The fluctuation in temperature in the last 24 hours was 31.1° to 34.0°, less than 3°. I am happy to report that through it all, my wife is still married.

Between 10-10:30 pm last night, strong wind, thunder and lightening announced the passing of a front which brought high wind and storm warnings. However, only a few drops of rain appeared on the windows before I went to sleep. I suspect that most of the rain in the gauge came from a brief shower that I heard somewhere around 7 am this morning. The wind could have affected the rain amount in the gauge. Today, we are left with a wind advisory for winds 25-40 mph with gusts to 50 mph. Morning, Bob!

Then, we had snow showers last evening that added to that total and turned the grass and roof tops white, but not the streets and sidewalks. Finally, the dummy (that would be me), who was checking the gauge this morning, put the gauge under his arm to bring it inside to melt some of the slush in the gauge, and then bent over to check why the ground-fault outlet on the deck had tripped . . . which promptly emptied the liquid in the gauge. Oh my, the things that us meteorology scientists must endure - thoughtless negligence! Mea culpa to the scientific community.
