10/1/2015 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M In the doldrums - but the most beautiful doldrums, the most pleasant doldrums to be in! All due to what 60 days from now would be a "really nasty Nor'easter" but now is just a pile and a half of rain with category 4 Joachim is coming up the coast just behinf@ (So nice in-between the earthquakes & the hurricanes!!)
10/2/2015 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
10/3/2015 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Bunnies and squirrels burying stuff. Actually, squirrels burying stuff that bunnies then dig up. Yard looks like small internecine war has been waged.

10/7/2015 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M To my brother & sister Cocorahs observers in the Carolinas: you were mentioned on Monday, 5 October 2015, by the news readers on NPR's All Things Considered and by the staff meteorologist of Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) as the news anchor looked for new spin on the story. The comments were paraphrased about how it rained so quickly on Saturday that your gauges over filled far sooner than you thought possible but "...though these are all volunteers, they are very dedicated and these observers found ways to estimate the rainfall missed...and the amounts were very close to one another, so whatever method they each individually used - they worked. And because of this great group of dedicated volunteers, we have maps showing precipitation flows over areas..." from MPR staff meteorologist Paul Huttner 5 October 2015 approximately 3:45pm (just before a pledge break - of course!) The NPR reference was shorter, but I liked what Paul said about us. There is one of 7s at his station!!! B safe and thanks for your truly awesome job. You made all of us so proud!
10/8/2015 5:00 AM 0.50 M M M M started 03:35. Original report. 0.10" @ 04:00 (my usual report time, due to original reports 4 yrs ago), but as entire event occurred prior to end of the true 24 hour window at 05:00, I revised to include whole amount/event. Event duration 93 min - 03:35 - 05:08.

10/10/2015 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Not a drop. Ya know, I'd betcha a buncha money that if 20-50 of the flooded gauges from South Carolina were sent to Southern California, and 20-50 of the drought gauges were then sent back, the weather would, in effect, trade. It would begin raining in California and stop raining in South Carolina (not enough to cause a drought in the next calendar year). Would it hurt anything or anyone to do it? Would it be a good morale builder (maybe some of us could put some dollars in the gauges - enough for meals for 3 days in SC, dinner & a movie in CA (gift certificates we may be able to get from vendors)), and it would be a great public relations event for Cocorahs and NWS "we never take OUR volunteer TEAM for granted - we take them for dinner!" 2 simultaneous opposite natural disasters, on opposite sides of the country. It is an opportunity to support & help all of us, vicariously.

10/12/2015 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain but started putting yard & gardens to bed yesterday: mowed lawn putting green short (will likely need 1 more mowing), got garden beds ready to be bedded down (chicken wire over the terraces to hold leaves in place & stop any predation of bulbs), chickenwire "envelopes" to pack & protect 9-12 bulbs so all burst into bloom together & no hungry nasty squirrel can dig it up, take 1 bite & then leave the bulb on the top of the soil. 2/28/2016 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M (I am alive! Will fill in the past 3 wks tomorrow!) I will report that El Niño has effects in Europe as well. In Northern England in the winter & early spring, that means flooding rains (10" January in Desmond; 4"-6" in early February with the same storm system that paralyzed the NE US (Storm name unk); temps in all of UK were, on average, 2.5-3.5 degrees (centigrade, of course!) higher every day throughout the entire month of February. There is flooding in southern England due to rains (no, it does not always rain in London or England anymore than it always snows in Minnesota or Buffalo NY!). The floods are due to exceptionally high full moon tides at the same time as the week of rains end. Coastal flooding in the cold spring: no fun! This affected Cornwall to London areas, where the devastating floods from the winter storms truly flooded the entire northern 1/4 to 1/3 of the country, including great historical treasures as York, the York Minster, the Roman wall surrounding York (on which they marked the high tide!), and the archeological site of a Viking village. Very disheartening. In Rome, the same efdect: higher average daily temps day on day, January and February both. In February, this meant temps approaching a daily AVERAGE of 7.5 degrees (46F), up from the normal February daily average temp of 2.75 (37F). The day I was in Rome, the temp was 10! (50F), but the wind was very cold off the rivers and bay. And no snow (obviously!), to melt and flow down in the spring. Rains have been present but only moderate - uncertain if they will be sufficient to make up for evaporation of the unfriended water all winter and non-melting. So PROOF El Niño is a global event

The babies were healthy and at approximately 6 wks development, which places them almost exactly 6 wks ahead of the "natural" birthing time of early to mid April (now). This is the 2nd consecutive yr that this doe has birthed in mid-February and also 5 kittens. In 2015, 4 survived to summer and 3 survived the full season. This is the normal average in this area for "my" breeding pairs (I've had 9 generations of 1 family birth and live in my yard. I provide clean, fresh water for all birds & animals all spring-fall, and I put out carrots for the bunnies so they don't eat my gardens (it is a good agreement and it works!!); predation is low except last summer we lost 7 yearlings in 3 wks to human/canine predation (directed - the bodies were laid out so we'd immediately find them upon leaving the house)).

I set it to be a barrier to sun to prevent growth like this.Maybe heat was sufficient? Will have to talk to Master Gardener. Daylilies without cover or any protection are over 3" tall. 3 gardens: bed 1 is adjacent to house so gets that shelter, gets heat wash. Bed 2 is a terraced bed in a hill so has some wind break from the terrain but is only 28" wide and stone built, thus the heavy leaf mulch and bedding. Bed 3 is a boulevard garden - public sidewalk level; no barriers from wind. 8' across sidewalk to retaining wall to be below bed 2. Hill/retaining wall may provide small wind barrier. Bed 3 has 35yr maple trees at either end

5/19/2016 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The baby bunnies are now 4 inches long, standing 3 inches tall when sitting/standing on all 4 in a relaxed position - born 7 wks early, this is easily 8-10 wks ahead of normal development benchmarks (this would usually be a mid-July benchmark). The wee ones have a 1/3 predation loss thus far. And are running easily at 70% of the speed of their adult family members for short times. Expecting to lose 1 more in coming weeks, as per normal predation rate :-(
5/20/2016 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yearling rabbits (2 survivors) are around in contradiction to normal pattern. But as 4 of the yearlings were deliberately killed (human predation) and 3 adults were predated last year during the baby's 1st season, I'm not too surprised to see them checking back to the nest (both does too, so that also increases their likelihood of returning).

6/10/2016 5:00 AM 0.54 M M M M Occurred just after my reporting time closed yesterday. Storm was training just to Southwest of here, but cycling around here with about 75 min cycles. The 3rd cycle started @ 05:17; then cycle 4 was shorter and of shorter duration as well, started about 09:35. Cycle 3 was over .3" of rain, and that time slot had the severity & hail where the earlier & later thunderstorms were just rain with noise here. 3.75 miles to my west and 4.5 miles south the rainfall total for entire storm (mine was .91) was 2.78 with tennis ball sized hail!!!

So I unscrewed the brass spigot on the 55 gal barrel btwn storm cells (did I mention I make the barrels?). Wow. Water comes out really fast when you do THAT! LOL And cleaned it out too!! Cleaned out spigot but put new 1 in just the same & Praise God, it screwed right into the hole & bonded, no caulk at all! Attached hose - water tight connection immediately!! 9/4/2016 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Starting the preliminary process to recruit subjects & raise funds/chase grants for the ultimate weather/medical research: what weather condition(s) cause our pain to increase? (I have results from a pilot project but 0 disclosure so as to not taint pool). Subjects: any age, any health status, just has a joint or muscle that can "tell the weather." For 1 yr will consistently document descriptive weather at waking (sunny & cold, cloudy & warm, etc) & pain level (will establish baseline with each non-chronic pain subject & each chronic pain subject at start so all subsequent pain reports are any increases off that subjective 0 baseline). If/when increase in pain noted at waking, weather specific is noted (barometric, temp, wind). At least twice during the day, subject will check own pain (midday & at bed) & again note any increase and weather specific only if an increase. There will be some activity questions to ensure pain not altered due to pain too. Hoping for as many Cocorahs volunteers as possible, as I need minimum 5 subjects per state Continental US, but would LOVE to get 5+ from each state and then be able to definitively rule out bias & other sampling errors, as well as count it as a "statistical random sample" due to rule of large numbers. And Nolan & his wife would be PERFECT co-volunteers in CO!! :-) (For mountainous states, if I get half at altitude & half in lowlands, can then process samples separately (statistical meanderings lol)). Projected start: 1 March 2017 (right smack as the spring storms start raging!), so a good 6 mos to recruit, take counsel from any learned meteorological types (I'm a medical researcher on pain), and get the IRB process completed.

(6 mos away still, but Woohoo! This will be great!) And greater still with great subjects...so if a mention could be made in the next newsletter or two, and give them my email - silyrabbt@aol.com - thanks for considering it!! :-D

This was the 9th 100 year rain event in 4 yrs, statewide, and 3rd this summer. Either the term is being overused or these very rare events are common now, requiring a "retuning" of what a 100 yr storm WOULD look like: a multi-day event akin to an inland hurricane
9/23/2016 5:00 AM 0.24 M M M M This rain occurred just after yesterday's report. I was too tired to re-do it though it was, technically within the window. I do ALL reports/measurements at the same time regardless if rain/snow continues during window.
