this site was along the northern edge of persistent thunderstorm activity from mainly 11PM-4AM. The first sprinkles fell at 1030 PM, with the majority of rain 11PM-1AM, accompanied by frequent lightning. At the nearby Hastings airport (3 miles NW of here) this rain event "saved" this meteorological summer (June-August) from being the driest on record! MUCH higher rain amounts of 3-7" fell only 7-20 miles to the south/southwest, especially between Ayr and Blue Hill, causing rather extensive flooding. On the multi-county scale, although flooding not far to the south of this site was obviously unwelcomed, from a purely "meteorological perspective" this was a LONG-OVERDUE localized rain event squarely centered over some of the driest portions of Nebraska so far this summer in southern Adams, Webster, northern Nuckolls and northeastern Franklin counties. Much of this rain event fell directly over a localized area of Severe Drought (as assigned by the U.S. Drought Monitor). |

Of the total, 0.44 fell on the 29th and 0.01 AM of the 30th. 24-hour high temperature at the airport (3 miles northwest) was 83 at 457 PM. |

Between a "strong trace" and a "weak hundredth" that fell as light rain/sprinkles during the 1st hour of the period between 7-8AM on the 30th (rounded down). Light fog at ob time today (visibility 4 miles at HSI airport 3 miles NW of here). 24-hour high temp at airport was 79 at 313PM. Although this new station did not capture a true August total, the airport had 1.77" as of 7AM this morning, marking the 28th-driest August on record out of 122. More significantly, meteorological summer (June-Aug) at the airport only totaled 4.74" (5.96" below normal), ranking as the 6th-driest on record out of 122. |

Two distinct rounds of rain with very similar totals. Round 1: off-and-on showers (a few briefly heavier with rumbles of thunder) between 1030 AM-Noon that dropped 0.36". Round 2: Several hours of persistent, mainly light rain between 1130 PM-430 AM that totaled 0.34". During this round, Hastings was near the northern fringes of a stratiform rain shield associated with a complex of strong thunderstorms centered over north central Kansas. |
