Heavy snow starting sometime between 1500 and 1700, but temps initially a little above freezing and remained near freezing, so very wet and heavy snow bowing all the tree and bushes that still had most of their leaves because of the late onset of fall. Overcast and still snowing lightly at 0700 this morning. Sampling the precip was very difficult because the snow was very sticky and tended to pile up on top of gauge, even though the inner cylinder and funnel were removed. Therefore I took a core sample which came in a little lower than the gauge readings, but that would be expected because the first flakes to fall were melting. |

Clear and cold this morning. The storm was just winding down at 0700 yesterday morning and there was just a trace of snow after this time. The air temp stayed fairly cool, but there was a lot of heat in the ground, so there are a lot of bare spots showing. Light rain started yesterday at 0807, becoming fairly heavy about 0945 with strong wind, temp in forties, turning to snow about 1300 and not nearly as windy, with temp in thirties, but only about 1/4" accumulation until steady snow started accumulating about 1700 (0.22" inches moisture up to 1700 and there was a break in the precip between 1400 and 1700). About 3" of steady snow fell between 1700 and 2300 with very little wind and with a water content of only 0.12". There didn't appear to be any precip after 2300. I don't have a lot of confidence in the gauge accurately capturing the snow because there was a fairly uniform 3" around the yard, but only 0.12" water content in the gauge, which is way too high a ratio for snow falling near freezing.

Partly cloudy and cold this morning, 3" snow on ground. Several core samples averaged 0.26" water content. Yesterday: Snowed all day until about 1400, then light snow or flurries after that. Heaviest snowfall occurred 0900 to about 1000 (4" in about 1-hour). It turned windy and showery after that with no additional depth added to snow on ground. Sun popped out about 1340, but there were periods of light snow after that that added 0.01" of moisture. There was an additional 0.01" of moisture overnight. This added up to 0.18" water content in 4" of snow that fell at close to the freezing point, so I concluded that my gauge didn't properly capture the snow and made several core measurements around the yard this morning and they averaged 0.26" water, so I used the core measurements this morning for yesterday's report of moisture. |

Very windy and mostly cloudy yesterday with a few sprinkles mid-morning and then rain in the evening, heavy at times, turning to snow about 2330 with main accumulation after 0300. The wind made measurements difficult. I kept the inner cylinder in place until the rain turned to snow (0.18" moisture to this point). The outer cylinder only had 0.13" of moisture in it with large amounts of snow and ice stuck to the outside, so I took several core samples and used this average for the snow water content for the snow segment of the storm. |

Very unusual storm for early May with hail, periods of lightning, several periods of moderate to heavy rain spread over the entire 24 hours. The reporting period started yesterday with a hail and thunderstorm which started at 0715 with 1/4" hail and lasted until 0747 (this was a continuation of a T-storm with even larger hail that started before 0700). The hail didn't do much damage, didn't accumulate to more than a few pellets depth and melted fairly rapidly. There was a break in the storm about 1040 with 0.37" of rain up to this point. Additional thunderstorms between 1309 and 1523 dropped 0.22" rain. Another bout of rain started at 1645 and lasted overnight with heavy rain at 0649 this morning and this period accounted for another 0.46" of rain. There was no flooding, but some of the nearby creeks coming off of Peavine Mountain were running fast and furious! |

The temperature during most of this time was near 50 F, so there was no accumulation of solid precip. Things were quite wet by sunset, so it was very hard to believe that only 0.03" of precip fell. I think there was probably at least twice as much as I recorded. For one thing, the precip was coming in on high wind at right angles to my rain gauge. It seems like we ought to be able to come up with better measuring devices with all our technology! |

I'm in Pioche, NV right now, so my wife made the Reno observation of the usual 0.0". However, Pioche had a good lightning display and a meager 0.05" of rain, but Eagle Valley, a few miles to our NE received over 1" according to an observer I know who makes measurements at that location. |
