This day (7 Oct) and tomorrow (8 Oct) mark the tenth anniversary of a great Middle Atlantic States deluge where a plume of tropical moisture (atmospheric river), much of which emanated from Tropical Storm Tammy along the Florida Atlantic coast even though the storm center or its remnant low never came close, but was focused south-to-north ahead of a slow-moving cold front from the west. This station got 2.09" on 7 October 2005 and then 7.24" on 8 October 2005 (measurements as of 2359 EST) for a two-day total of 9.33, including a maximum 24-hour rain of 7.83, plus a minor spillover into 9 October. The greatest rainfalls of around a foot occurred several miles to the E and NE of here through interior eastern Berks County. Flooding was only moderate as antecedent conditions were very dry, and the rain was never really torrential but instead moderate to frequently heavy, 1.0" to 1.5" per hour, over a 36-hour period. Upon joining CoCoRaHS in January 2006, I input data retroactive to 1 October 2005 to include this historic deluge and to complete the 2005-2006 water year. Although the snow was all dry and fluffy with temperatures in the low to mid 20s, significant winds sifted the snow to small flakes, causing it to compact slightly while accumulating, thus resulting in a "heavy dry" snow with a typical "heavy wet" snow ratio of 8.4 to 1. Snowfall and snow depth values were reconstructed upon return home on Tuesday 26 January and after conducting a site analysis including several core samples, and especially at a spot which was level (no drifting), mostly shaded, and sheltered from most wind such that the core result should still be very close to the original shortly after the snowfall ended; it came to 3.22. Cores from sunnier spots had less but still at least 2.82. Consultation with station Reading 4.7 WSW observer, 1.25 mile away, provided much useful guidance in obtaining reasonably confident individual daily amounts over the two days the snowstorm spanned. |

NWS radar showed both to be at sharp northern edge of significant rainfall, thus sub-measurable rain at Reading 2.3 NW and at RDG is plausible. This rain served as a beneficial early morning watering, but much more rain is needed. |

Monday was another day of missed downpours. Heavy thunderstorm approached from W mid-afternoon but dissipated to sprinkles upon arrival. Heavy thunderstorms to NW weakened to light rain between 6 PM and 8 PM, only to regenerate nearby to the S-SE, but resulted in a rainbow between 7:45 and 7:55 PM. This 0.16 plus 0.37 from previous predawn will bring only short relief from abnormally parched conditions. But it was on 26 July 1986 when Reading 3.5 SW was deluged with 4.19 from occasional thunderstorms, However, immediately to the E, especially from northern Cumru Twp to Amity Twp, was where prolonged torrential rains dumped 6 to 11 inches and ping-pong ball size hail. |

A burst of windswept rain began at 4:46 PM dropping visibility to 1/4 mile but quickly diminished to light rain and wind within two minutes. The 4" gauge caught only 0.12 while the automated 9" collector registered 0.19, which is likely the better catch of the brief "sideways" rainfall and am going with that. The two gauges are usually quite close. Any sprinkle from vicinity midnight showers was sub-measurable. |
