I noticed no snow at 4:50 AM yesterday. However, there were scattered traces of snow on the ground by 7:56. A few flakes of new falling snow appeared within a minute or so of 8:25. Snow then waxed and waned a bit, sometimes with large flakes. By 10:50 there were scattered thin, parallel streaks of snow (mini-drifts) on the road in front of our house, oriented with the light northwest wind. Larger flakes began to dominate by noon, at which time the road was lightly covered. At 12:40 PM snow was heavy, with rapid accumulation (depth 0.9”). Snow had virtually stopped with 1.4” on the ground (water content 0.06”) by 1:37. Only a few desultory small flakes were in the air by 2:38. Clouds thinned enough to reveal a dim diffuse sun by 3:50, after which the sky gradually cleared considerably. Temperatures were very steady throughout the day, varying from a low of 21 degrees to a high of 23, dropping again before 5 PM. Temperature 12 degrees at observation time today; no additional precipitation, but distinct sublimation, leaving 0.9” snow on ground (0.05” water equivalent). |

By 7:25 it is clear that there has been rain, indicated by darkened areas in the snow caused by considerable puddles beneath, and the glassy icy world as well, with ca. 0.1” thick ice on twigs and branches, and widespread icicles up to 1” long. Occasional light fine sleet on very light ~N wind.
At 7:56 the temperature is 31 degrees (overnight low 28). Snowboard covered with 1.6” of somewhat metamorphized snow under a 0.5” crust of considerably consolidated snow and sleet (board melt 0.68”). Total H2O catch of rain+sleet+snow is 1.43”.

No new precipitation; clear, calm, 25 degrees, only a trace of dendritic frost. Coring the icy material (heavily consolidated millimeter-sized grains) on the snow board was difficult. Unlike the coring I did yesterday, which involved smashing a can through the thick crust, and leaving a small amount of material frozen on the board, I adopted a new approach. I dipped the rim of my coring can into hot water, shook it, and then pressed it into the surface of the ice. Repeating this many times, I melted a deep enough cut so that I finally pressed through the ice to the surface of the board. I then slid the core into a cold pan, and scraped the residual icy material left behind into the pan as well. The thickness of the remaining bulk material adjacent to the cut was 1.46 inches (the thickness of the remainder varies across the board); the melt amounted to 0.73 inches, giving a mean filling factor for the material of 0.50 (recall that fresh dry snow can have a filling factor of 0.05 or less). |

Lightning frequency increased dramatically (though thunder still only soft to moderately loud rolls) until about 12:15 AM. Around that time the activity became a major thunderstorm, perhaps initiated for me by a lightning flash 1 second high at 12:22 AM accompanied by very heavy rain. Thereafter rapidly flickering lightning with frequent very bright flashes, nearly continual thunder and torrential rain continued for several minutes. Rain decreased (though lightning did not) around 12:30, as the storm moved off to the north, and eventually to the northeast (the numerous tree frogs near our house loved it all, chirping loudly throughout). +1.86" at 12:47 AM. Generally light rain thereafter with fairly frequent softer rolls of thunder. Around 12:55 a period of infrequent rolls of thunder to south also began, as the central storm passed farther on in an easterly direction; there was still modest activity in the distance at 1:10. +0.12" at 7:00 this morning, with very brief sprinkles. There was never much wind, and very little debris from trees. There is evidence this morning of heavy flows of water with some erosion. The power never went out (the clocks on appliances never reset). |
