10/8/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I did not see the gauge with my eyes, but I live four miles from the school and there was no evidence that any rain fell by 7:00AM.
10/9/2016 7:00 AM M M M M M When I woke up at my house, four miles from this gauge at school, the driveway was wet, but the underneath the truck was dry. It rained lightly on and off all day. In the evening around 8:00PM, it was raining lightly steadily. I will check the rain gauge on 10/10.
10/10/2016 7:00 PM 0.69 M M M M It did not rain at all during this day, so the 0.69" would be the total from the morning of 10/9 throughout the day and evening of 10/9.

10/29/2016 8:00 AM 1.08 M M M M It stopped raining at about 6:00PM last evening. So, along with the 0.11" from yesterday, this rain event left 1.19" in our gauge.
10/30/2016 11:30 AM 0.11 M M M M Although the observation time was 11:30AM, no rain fell between 7:00AM and the observation time, so 0.11" can be interpreted as the rain in the gauge at 7:00AM. Ed
10/31/2016 6:50 AM T M M M M The bottom of the meniscus was closer to the bottom of the tube than it was to the 0.01" line, so I called the amount a trace. Ed

11/23/2016 7:00 AM M M M M M I was away from the gauge for a while. On the morning of 11/25, I measured all the precipitation that had collected between the morning of 11/22. This amount will be entered for 11/25. Ed

12/1/2016 7:30 AM 0.57 M M M M This event began as mist that I noticed at 4:30 PM yesterday and developed into rain overnight. It was raining steadily, but not hard, as I emptied the gauge at 7:30 this morning. Ed

12/6/2016 5:00 AM 0.15 2.0 0.15 2.0 0.15 The 0.15" figure is all from fluffy snow in the gauge that was melted indoors. And, because this was the only snow on the ground, I typed in the water equivalent from the new snow in the gauge for melted value of snow-on-the-ground. Ed
12/7/2016 6:50 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 2.0 M Not much happened to yesterday's snow. It is still fluffy on the ground at a depth of 2 inches.

12/18/2016 1:00 PM 0.93 3.7 0.55 7.5 M These measurements show the time period from Friday morning, 12/6, to now. On Saturday, 12/17, we got snow, all snow. Then freezing rain began this morning around 5:00 or 6:00. Then it warmed up rapidly and the precipitation change to liquid rain as noon approached. Interesting that the new snow board core SWE is so much lower than the gauge SWE. My guess is that rain melted the snow from the board and it just trickled to the bottom and became lost to a core sample. Also, I melted a core from the ground, but lost track of how much hot water I added, so there is no data to report. Ed

1/25/2017 7:00 AM 1.97 0.5 M 10.0 3.19 This event began yesterday morning. It was a mix of rain that froze and frozen rain. Late in the day and overnight, it turned to liquid rain and was no longer freezing on surfaces. At the time of this data collection, it was still raining very lightly. Almost 2" is a lot of water to fall on a snowpack. Ed
1/26/2017 6:30 AM 0.35 0.2 M 11.0 3.27 Just 0.2 inches of a hard-to-penetrate material glued onto the new snow board. Remember, we got nearly 2" of water out of the precipitation event yesterday and the day before yesterday. It is interesting that the snowpack has gotten deeper but the SWE is going up faster than "it should." So I'm wondering about whether the density increase comes from the snow "trapping" some of the rain that fell. Ed

2/4/2017 10:30 AM 0.10 1.2 0.11 12.0 3.56 The snowpack SWE is interestingly high. Perhaps this is due to our station's insolation. The site gets direct morning sun, but at at low angle, or course. Then tree tops block some late morning sun; and trees to the west block late afternoon sun. But the temperatures have also helped to keep the snowpack in a mechanically rigid, unchanging entity. Ed

2/8/2017 7:10 AM 0.52 2.5 0.51 14.0 3.97 Snow began last night at about 6:30 with tiny particles of snow but not "flakes" per se. When I shoveled the driveway at 6:00 AM this morning there was a slight crust on the snow. When I checked the CoCoRaHS station, the precip had just turned to all liquid rain and there was a soft crust on top of the fluffier snow underneath. S'pose to warm up today. We'll get some melting. Ed
2/9/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M At 7:00 AM, no snow had fallen. Snow began to fall at 11:15 AM in nice "flakes" of a variety of sizes. More on this tomorrow. Ed
2/10/2017 7:10 AM 0.48 5.5 0.65 18.0 3.78 So, the snow began at 11:15 AM yesterday, piled up faster at first. I looked at the snow on an official blue crystal card with a loupe. I saw perfect hexagonal crystal of many "styles," flat, spiky, lobed. The snow became finer and blew in all directions on a strong wind.
2/11/2017 1:00 AM M M M M M Hi. I went to school today, where our CoCoRaHS station is, to do some classroom chores, but did not check the gauge because this snow event was underway and in-process. I say "event," but I think "saga" might be the better term. Perfect flakes began falling lightly in the early morning and that has continued until now, at 6:00 PM. A blizzard warning is on for this locale beginning tomorrow sometime, Sunday, February 12 and going through Monday in the morning. I caught lots of crystals on the blue crystal card and examined/marveled at them. Individual crystals, mostly whole and intact, are what this snowfall has been made of. Ed
2/12/2017 4:00 PM 0.08 2.0 0.08 19.0 M This 0.08 water equivalent is from today and yesterday. For the entire period, individual planar, hexagonal crystals fell lightly, accumulating in a low-density layer undisturbed by wind. Notice that the gauge SWE equals the SWE from the core of the new snow board. As I type, I can feel a "change in the weather" portending the incipient blizzard. It has warmed up from the low teens to the high twenties and the air feels more humid.
2/14/2017 6:30 AM 0.94 21.0 2.41 36.0 7.81 The 0.94" figure is just the melted snow in the gauge, which filled then overflowed with the blizzard we just had. Below you will see a new snow SWE of 2.41 inches for the whole storm. I got this using a different technique because there was too much snow to use the plastic cylinder. Using a piece of metal conduit with a 2cm radius, I divided the mass in grams by the area of the conduit, then divided by 2.54 to get the SWE in inches. I used the same method for the SWE of the whole snowpack. The snow wound down at about 16:00 yesterday, and finally ended at around 20:00. Ed
2/16/2017 4:00 PM 0.09 1.1 M 32.0 M This was a light snow that began some time before 3:00 AM when I woke up and ended around 7:00 AM. It did not amount to much.
2/17/2017 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 32.0 7.26 The SWE of the snowpack is mathematically derived from the mass of the core taken with a long piece of aluminum conduit of known radius. The mass of the snow in grams equals the volume of melted snow in cubic centimeters. This divided by the area of the conduit gives the water depth in centimeters, which is then converted to inches. Today's core was a good one, with grass evident at the bottom but no soil. Ed

My wife described what caused the tinkling as little rectangles that crunched when she walked on them. There were very few of these rectangles. I could see them individually, scattered about. Ed
2/23/2017 8:10 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 22.0 6.81 The pack SWE of 6.25" came from a core I took in the same spot as the last core, which gave an SWE of 6.26". On this morning I also took a core from a different spot, but near the average snow depth and got 7.37". Since a lot of snow appeared to melt yesterday, I hesitate to report an increase in the pack SWE, but these cores give an idea of the variability in SWE at our CoCoRaHS gauge site. If I had time, I would take several cores each session and report an average. Ed Note added 2/26/2017: I decided to change the snowpack SWE value from a single core to the average of the two cores I actually measured. The average is 6.81" of water.
2/24/2017 12:30 PM 0.00 0.0 0.00 19.0 M The snowpack depth ranged from 17" to 21." I called the average 19". Sure wish I had had time to get a pack SWE. Things are happening fast. The snowpack is quite softer mechanically today compared just to yesterday.

2/26/2017 7:45 PM 0.00 0.0 0.00 15.0 5.83 The 5.83" snowpack SWE value is an average of two cores taken side by side. The two values were 6.45 and 5.20 inches of water. I am going to go back and change the 2/23/2017 snowpack SWE value to the average of the two cores I took that day. This seems scientifically tighter.
2/28/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 15.0 6.90 I found a weird 0.34 inches of water in the gauge this morning, frozen because the night temperature was in the 20's. I can't account for it. Ed
3/1/2017 6:30 AM T 0.0 0.00 14.0 4.49 I dug this snowpack core out so I noticed that the snow was really granular with much air space. Light rain began at 6:10 this morning.
3/2/2017 6:45 AM 0.20 0.0 0.00 12.0 3.28 The snowpack has become coarsely granular from the bottom to nearly the top. The temperature was in the 40's overnight. It started to rain at about 6:00 AM. The snowpack SWE entered below, 3.28", is the average of two cores with values of 3.56" and 4.99".

3/15/2017 7:15 AM 0.94 9.1 1.44 16.0 4.83 The snow in this storm was being blown horizontally a lot of the time. The pack SWE for today contained a sample of an "ice" layer on top of the grass. I think that some of the variability in pack SWE measurements comes from how much of this ice layer I capture with the core.
3/16/2017 6:30 AM T 0.0 0.00 M 4.37 Just a few flurries in the gauge.
3/17/2017 7:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 15.0 5.08 Once again, just a few flurries in the gauge. The snowpack SWE core came up with a significant plug of ice that is currently sitting on the surface of the ground. With the plug, the pack SWE is 5.72". Without the plug, the SWE is 5.08". I reported the SWE without the ice plug because I have most often not gotten the whole plug with the SWE core. This decision might make the method more consistent as a way to track the changes in the loss of SWE as this pack fades away. Ed
