It began to rain steadily around 5 PM, and at some point during the overnight hours (after midnight--later than forecast) the rain changed over to snow. The total rainfall measured 0.19 inches. We had a 31 mph windgust at some point after midnight (Davis instrument). 1/21/2017 8:00 AM 0.20 0.0 M 14.0 3.31 The precipitation fell as rain, which began during the afternoon of January 20. We live on the NW shore of a lake, in a tiny geographic area that holds the largest concentration of freshwater lakes on the planet. I define the catchement area for our cocorahs gauge as the flat area of our spare lot that is least affected by tree cover. Thus, my catchment area represents areas here that are forest openings, barren areas, and farmland. I always include mention of the snow cover on the steep shoreline area of our property in my observation notes because shoreline occupies so much of the local area due to the high incidence of lakes. After the warm temperatures of the last few days and the rain of the last 24 hours, the shore is mostly bare of snow, and holds snow only on the second and third terraces above the lake--the snow is only a couple of inches deep. The snow water equivilent in the total snow core has increased due to the relatively deep snow cover on my defined catchment area holding the recent rainfall within the snow column.

1/28/2017 8:00 AM 0.03 0.4 0.03 16.0 M some of the snow that fell yesterday was in the form of soft snow pellets. We had a sunny afternoon yesterday, so I walked in the timber stand across the road from my cocorahs catchment area. During the January warm spell, or thaw, which lasted about 10 days, the majority of the yellow birch in the stand (an overmature sparsely stocked northern hardwood sawtimber stand on a north facing slope bordered by a swamp) had broken dormancy and were displaying catkins. This has never happened before that I have seen (36 years here) and will necessitate that the trees expend energy in the spring producing new catkins, as these have frozen already.

The flakes slowly increased in size and the snowfall increased in intensity over the next two hours. when I retrieved the gauge, I found a very light dusting of fine frozen rain on the north side of the gauge, so we did get some light freezing rain in the overnight hours. getting snow depths has been really trying this winter. on my catchment area, the snow varies in depth from 11 to 18 inches, so I am always taking many meaurements and doing a weighted average depth. At the ground surface is a solid layer of ice, like ice on a pond or lake, not like very granular snow. The ice has to be chopped through to get the gauge to the ground.

2/19/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 10.0 M After three days of high temperatures in the fifties, the snow pack is melting away. my catchment area is 10% bare of snow, and the depths range from 7 inches to 13 inches. 10 inches in depth was the most commonly encountered measurement, accounting for the 10% bare ground. 2/22/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 2.5 M The depth of snow on the ground takes into account that 50% of my catchment area is bare ground. The actual measurement of areas with snow remaining was 5 inches. Across the road, in a mature hardwood sawtimber stand, the snow is 6 inches deep. Where the root collars of large trees has created a hillock around the root collar, this hillock is devoid of snow. All down trees and logs on the ground, are devoid of snow (they are usually snow covered). On paved roads within 5 miles of my catchment, open stands, such as pole size pine plantations, and recently harvested areas with a low basal area of residual trees are devoid of snow. The southfacing banks of lakes are devoid of snow. The lake had large pools of free water all day yesterday, these have firmed up today. These observations should serve as indicators of how much of the snowpack has evaporated.
2/23/2017 8:00 AM 0.89 4.4 0.63 7.0 1.18 The rain began in a desultory fashion at 4 PM. when I went outside at 8 PM, there was a steady light rain. At 11PM, I observed the first lightening flash and roll of thunder. I could still hear what I thought was rain against the window, but it could have been sleet. the thunder and lightning lasted about one half hour. when I cleared the snow board, at the surface of the snowboard was approx. one inch of clear spherical sleet. on top of the sleet was a thin layer of spherical snow pellets, and on top of that, moderately heavy snow. in the gauge, there was a layer of frozen rain in the bottom of the gauge, and frozen rain on the exterior of the gauge.

I am having very large amounts of both migrants and resident birds at the feeder array. The snow covered up available food, and the cold temps are retarding the emergence of insects for the little "meat eaters." There are at times 200 pine siskins, dark eyed juncos, evening grosbeak, goldfinches, chickadees, black birds, blue jays, purple finches, and the odd mourning dove, chipping sparrow and American tree sparrow, all maintaining homeostasis as our feeders. gives us a good feeling to help the birds, the populations of which are mostly in decline, some profoundly (pine siskins and evening grosbeak) over their range.

9/16/2017 8:00 AM 0.02 0.0 M 0.0 M We had a brief, light shower on the morning of Sept. 15, which lasted from about 9:40 to 9:50. We haven't had any rain in a long time, so it was pleasant to have a shower, however brief. Thunderstorms passed us by to the north and west yesterday early evening. We got absolutely no rain, but heard a lot of thunder in the distance.

11/28/2016 11/29/2016 8:00 AM 2 0.70 0.0 M It rained hard at times on the evening of Nov. 28. There was about 2 inches of snow, in patches on the morning of Nov. 28, now all snow is gone, both on my catchment area and in the woods across the road.

12/18/2016 1/14/2017 8:00 AM 28 1.79 17.0 2.69 We had a death in the family before Christmas, and then I became ill for some time, so I have not reported my observations for some time. On Christmas Day I was quite ill and laid on the couch for many hours. We had hard driving rain, and the wind was terrific. We have a very long house, and it seemed that the entire house was encompassed by the wind, which seemed like one giant constant exhalation. Before Christmas Day, we had been feeding about 70 small birds at our feeder array--chickadees, pine siskins, goldfinches and juncos. After the storm, we had a dozen or so birds at the feeders, which represents an apparent 80% mortality. The birds which survived were the largest of the birds--female gold finches. I saw no pine siskins at all. At the time of the last brief warm spell, birds from a distance began to move in to the feeders, and now we have 20-30 birds during the morning feeding period. I have never before seen hard driving rain on Christmas day, our 36th Christmas Day at this address. Also, we have never before observed avian mortality in our feeder birds that was due to cold high winds coupled with heavy driving rain (which made obtaining food for most small birds a physical impossibility). An interesting fact, that has never occurred before, is the close coincidence in readings between my two stations, which are about 50 miles apart. MI-GG--4 has 17 inches of snow on the ground, with a SWE of 2.69 inches. WI-ON-4 has 17 inches of snow on the ground, with a SWE of 2.77.

3/1/2017 3/06/2017 5:00 PM 6 T 8.0 3.16 The lowest 3 to 4 inches of snow in the snow column on the ground was solid opaque granular ice. the measurement of this ice was 1.06 inches of snow water equivilent. the remainder of the core preciptation, 1.56 inches of snow water equivilent, was contained in 4 to 4 inches of granular snow.

There was 0.3 inches of snow on the snowboard at 8 AM, only a trace here and there on the ground due to the warm ground
