Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/1/2016 8:00 AM 0.23 M M M M Light rain, 50° 24hr: 49/54° Still harvesting lettuce, arugula, pole beans, and a few straggler cherry tomatoes.
10/2/2016 8:00 AM 0.07 M M M M Overcast, 52° 24hr: 50/62° Light rain and drizzle most of yesterday put a dent in the Annual Pig Roast, but only amounted to 0.07"... Surprised it was so little.
10/3/2016 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Overcast, 56° 24hr: 52/57° Another grey, drizzly day that didn't amount to much needed rain at all. But enough to get algae to grow in the bottom of the gauge and create foliage diseases on some plants!
10/4/2016 8:00 AM 0.05 M M M M Overcast, 55° 24hr: 53/64° The sun came out for several hours yesterday afternoon. A brief shower at dinnertime; bulk of the rain came overnight. At 9pm heard migrating geese flying overhead. It's Fall!
10/5/2016 8:00 AM T M M M M Sunny, calm, 46° with heavy dew. 24hr: 45/61°
10/6/2016 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cloudy, 43° with moderate dew (1 drop). 24hr: 43/65°
10/7/2016 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 45° with heavy dew (3 drops). 24hr: 43/63. Sounds of geese flying overhead this morning right before sunrise.
10/8/2016 8:00 AM T M M M M Overcast, 53° 24hr: 45 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /66°
10/9/2016 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Overcast, 50° 24hr: 50/63° A few drops of rain in the early morning and then no rain here for the rest of the day. Beautiful, rosey sunset through the clouds. First half of the overnight was quite warm; second half was breezy with falling temps.
10/10/2016 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Sunny, breezy, 40° 24hr: 40/56°
10/11/2016 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, calm, 35° 24hr: 35/54° Frost just missed us; no evidence of damage to plants in our yard, but just down our road frost was visible in a field; and at the bottom of Sparta Mountain there was frost in fields, cars, and on roofs.
10/12/2016 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly sunny, 39° 24hr: 36/56°
10/13/2016 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny with high thin clouds, and moderate dew, 47° 24hr: 39 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /60° Harvest is down to lettuce, arugula, pole beans, and a few cherry tomatoes. Ground is VERY dry.
10/14/2016 8:00 AM 0.07 M M M M Sunny, 41° 24hr: 41/56° The first bank of very dark clouds passed without rain, so I started watering the perennial beds and newly planted shrubs. Watering?? In the middle of October??! Odd year...
10/15/2016 6:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M First frost, 33° 24hr: 33/54°
10/16/2016 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly cloudy, 48° with moderate dew. 24Hr: 33 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /57° Yesterday morning's frost was a light one; most plants are continuing to chug along, and this morning's SW wind feels almost balmy.

11/20/2016 8:00 AM 0.66 4.7 0.61 4.7 0.66 Overcast, calm, 31° 24hr: 31/59° Wow! This is unexpected. Heavy wet snow bending over shrubs and limbs. Town snowplows out for the first time at 6am. For this report I entered the snowboard SWE instead of the gauge, as the snowboard was more representative of the actual snowfall. The gauge had frozen Ice & snow all over the sides, top, and the back of it, partially blocking the large 4" opening of the gauge. Glad I'd gotten all of my winter reporting equipment out and ready in October....
11/21/2016 8:00 AM T T T 2.8 0.55 Cloudy, very windy, 28° 24hr: 28/34° A few flurries yesterday that after melting the gauge contents, was just under 0.01" so reported a "T." After the wind picked up yesterday afternoon it's knocked all of the snow out of the trees but "pock-marked" the yard with chunks of snow so it was hard to find an undisturbed place to measure, other than the uncleared part of the snowboard (which is in one of the few tree-free places). So the Snow on Ground and SWE is from the snowboard. It remained under freezing most of the day, so I wasn't surprised that our first snow didn't melt away, except that Saturday's temps were so warm. But I am surprised that more didn't evaporate away in these long-enduring strong winds.
11/22/2016 8:00 AM T T M 1.5 M Mostly sunny, breezy, 30° 24hr: 28 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /33° Occasional stronger gusts, but wind not as incessant and fierce as the past two days. Yesterday a neighbor returned our windsock, which he'd found blowing down the road. A few, brief periods of light snow flurries yesterday. Dark paved surfaces are now snow-free, but lawn and gardens range from 1.4 to 1.8" of snow cover.

1/22/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Foggy, 36° 24hr: 35/47° Air felt saturated; couldn't decide if it was misting or fog. Lots of condensation on the gauge, but not even a single drop, so I'm reporting 0.00 Fog moved in late yesterday afternoon amazingly fast and very thick. The veritable "pea soup."
1/23/2017 8:00 AM 0.02 0.0 M 0.0 0.00 Overcast, 35° 24hr: 35/47° Winds from the E, with occasional swings to the SE or NE. No ice remains on our small pond. The 34a. lake is 2/3 open water.
1/24/2017 8:00 AM 1.43 1.8 0.81 1.8 0.81 Freezing drizzle, 30° 24hr: 30/35° Interesting weather day! Yesterday the wind blew our windsock off the limb it's on, and this morning I couldn't find the snowboard! Full winter spectrum: rain, sleet, snow, & freezing rain explains the big difference between gauge and snowboard totals.
1/25/2017 8:00 AM 0.46 1.1 0.31 2.7 M Partly cloudy, clearing, 32° 24hr: 29/33° Finally, a ribbon of sun on top of the western ridge-line. Haven't seen sun in a while. Had so much trouble getting the gauge off the post yesterday that I'd given the brackets a fresh spray of WD-40. The whole gauge (inside, outside, top rim and brackets) was encased in ice again this morning, but slipped right off the post. Mix continued all day yesterday with a period of very heavy snow after 6pm.
1/26/2017 8:00 AM T 0.0 M 1.6 M Drizzling, 39° 24hr: 32 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /41° Giant slabs of ice/snow were beginning to slide off our in-line metal roof yesterday. That really gets your attention, and no more ice dams! 1.6" snow on the ground is an average of several sample locations.
1/27/2017 8:00 AM 0.01 T M 0.6 M Sleeting, 33° 24hr: 33/46° Dry going out to the gauge; it contained 0.01" of liquid precipitation; and noticed a tiny layer of graupel on the ground on top of the existing snowcover. While taking temp measurements it started sleeting. Had to use the side pointed edge of my metal ruler to get through the snow/ice pack to measure it. Yesterday afternoon's winds blew our windsock into a neighbor's yard --again! (3rd time this winter)
1/28/2017 8:00 AM T T M 0.4 M Overcast, 29° 24hr: 28/37° Nothing in the gauge this morning despite day long, on & off, sleet, graupel, and snow showers. Reporting 0.4" of snow which is an average of several samplings; it's 1.0" in places and melted back to the ground near the foundation of our house, the base of large trees, and footprint tracks.
1/29/2017 8:00 AM T T M T M Cloudy, 30° 24hr: 29/32° Several periods of light snow flurries yesterday, no accumulation. Not sure how to report snow cover; snow/ice still covers 3/4 of ground, 0.8" in places. But the melt-back exposing bare ground continues outward from house, patio, and the base of large trees.
1/30/2017 8:00 AM T T M T M Cloudy, 24° 24hr: 23/37° A light dusting of snow along the bottom edge of the gauge; snow was extremely fluffy and didn't even result in one drop of SWE. Didn't observe snow yesterday so it must have fallen overnight.
1/31/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Cloudy, 22° 24hr: 19/34° Snow cover on the ground persists, still covering approx 70% with some snow/ice slabs still on parts of the roof. Total precipitation for January = 3.68" & new snow = 4.2"
2/1/2017 8:00 AM 0.10 1.2 0.09 1.3 M Sunny, 32° 24hr: 21/33° Snow began after Obs at 8:50am yesterday and had tapered off to occasional flurries by dinner time. Noticed birdsong increasing yesterday afternoon and again this morning. A joy!
2/2/2017 8:00 AM T T M 0.5 M Cloudy, 30° 24hr: 25/40° A brief snow squall yesterday afternoon around 4pm; this morning just a few frozen drops in the gauge. Not enough to reach the 0.01" line.
2/3/2017 8:00 AM T T M 0.5 M Cloudy, 20° 24hr: 18/37° Several bands of snow flurries (one was graupel) moved through during the day yesterday, resulting in a single drop of precipitation in the gauge this morning. Snowpack beginning to recede from house foundation and base of large trees, but solid everywhere else.
2/4/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.5 M Sunny, 14° 24hr: 14/29° This is one of the most lingering snow-pack of the winter.
2/5/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Cloudy, 24° 24hr: 14 [yesterday's a.m. reset] /30° Still need Yak-Trac to get to the gauge. The snow cover is more like an ice-field and still covers 2/3 of the yard. Since approx 1/3 is bare ground I'm reporting "T."
2/6/2017 8:00 AM T T 0.00 T M Sunny, 29° with more bird-song. 24hr: 25/35° Two brief snow flurries yesterday, no accumulation; nothing in gauge this morning. Tried to get a core sample from the frozen snow/ice still on the ground but it was too rock solid to penetrate or remove a core, even using the metal 1lb coffee can instead of the polycarbonate gauge. Did make a hole big enough to slip in the metal ruler; the snow/ice-pack is 0.50" over approx 60% of the ground.
2/7/2017 8:00 AM 0.01 T M T M Overcast, 31° with light fog. 24hr: 27/42° The precip in the gauge was liquid but there was a light layer of ice on all surfaces. Dog was sliding on steps and patio & Yak-Trac saved the day for me. After I came back in from reading the gauge the town's salt truck came through to treat the roads.
2/8/2017 9:00 AM 0.35 0.0 M T M Sunny, 40° 24hr: 31/40° Since the rain softened the snow/ice pack that remains (30 - 40% of yard covered) I was able to measure its depth: 0.5" tapering to bare ground in areas that were melting first. Yesterday morning's ice was amazing; we had a glaze here, but at 11am when I went over the mountain to Franklin, the ice was so much worse on the western side of the mountain (Sparta Mountain/Hamubrg Mountain).
2/9/2017 8:00 AM 0.70 6.4 0.70 6.4 M Snow, mixed with a little sleet, no wind, 25° 24hr: 25/52° Couldn't find the snowboard, so took the core from near, and will dig it out later. Rare to have identical measurements for gauge and "board" but it was today. Snow on all of the north-east trunks of trees. Good "packing snow." Snow did not begin until sometime after 3:15am when I last checked.
2/10/2017 8:00 AM 0.28 2.5 M 7.5 M Sunny, 15° 24hr: 12/27° Yesterdays 8am OT turned out to be midway in the storm. Took snow fall depth at noon when it ended, as the wind had come up and it was starting to blow around: 8.9" which I reported after noon in a Significant Weather Report. This morning 5 samples from representative locations in our yard: 7.5" It looks like half of our snow is now in my neighbor's yard across the road. I can see why it's so important to measure immediately after the snow stops! Could not take a core sample from the snowboard; it was sitting under an obvious large drift. Throughout the storm our first Robin took shelter in our 18' holly, feasting on the red holly berries. In our biggest snowstorm of the Winter, a sign of Spring!
2/11/2017 8:00 AM T T M 7.0 M Cloudy, 27° 24hr: 15 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /30° Too little snow on the board to collect. Melted snow from gauge didn't quite come up to the 0.01" in the smaller gauge. Snow occurred before 9:30pm; when we let the dog out it was already on the ground and cars.
2/12/2017 8:00 AM 0.15 T M 5.0 M Sleet & freezing rain, 28° 24hr: 27/45° Impossible to get the ice/sleet layer off the snowboard for measurement. Had to punch through the ice layer now on top of the snow for snow depth with a metal ruler.
2/13/2017 8:00 AM 0.74 1.6 0.71 6.0 M Overcast, 27° 24hr: 26/35° Toughest day this winter to get readings; the sleet/freezing rain layer had a layer of snow and then a topping layer of ice, so it was ALMOST enough to support my weight walking on it even with Yak-Trac. The snow easily supported the weight of our 50lb dog walking on it. Very difficult to punch the metal ruler through, even using the side point. Snowboard was almost impossible to dig a core from, even using the metal 1lb coffee can in place of the outter gauge to punch through the ice layers. We had some serious gusts of wind around 6am which broke off some small limbs; their ice encrustation shattered off when they hit the ground, so I was able to measure the actual thickness of the ice. It ranges from 0.1 - 0.2" Tried, but could not get SWE from snowpack; too many frozen layers.
2/14/2017 8:00 AM T T M 6.0 M Overcast, 24° 24hr: 22/31° A short period of snow yesterday was immediately blown off the top of the mostly ice snowpack. Nothing on snowboard this morning. Yesterday morning's winds blew down the "Welcome to Sussex County" sign on Route 23! Valentine's Day Birdsong despite the grey skies...
2/15/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 6.0 M Cloudy, 22° with frost on the gauge. 24hr: 20/39° Giant slabs of snow/ice hanging off the ends of our in-line metal roof. Snowcover unchanged but thankfully some of the ice-sheet that is our patio and front path melted a little yesterday.
2/16/2017 8:00 AM 0.02 T M 5.5 M Overcast, 24° 24hr: 22/45° A brief period of moderate snow late yesterday afternoon. Any melt yesterday turned into black ice this morning with a dusting of snow and graupel on top. I'm using a screw-driver to poke through the ice layer to measure snow depth with my ruler. And it's a metal ruler!
2/17/2017 8:00 AM T T M 5.5 M Mostly cloudy, 20° 24hr: 19/31° A brief passing snow-shower yesterday, no accumulation & nothing in the gauge this morning.
2/18/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.0 M Sunny, 23° 24hr: 20/39° Great Backyard Bird County Weekend! Still have snow/ice slabs on our roof and full snow/ice coverage everywhere (10 days). Many charter buses heading north on Route 23 yesterday afternoon; Mountain Creek must be happy.
2/19/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 4.0 M Mostly sunny, 40° 24hr: 23 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /54° The snowpack became much 'softer' yesterday with each step feeling more like wet snow than crunchy ice. Lots and lots of birdsong this morning.
2/20/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 2.0 0.94 Sunny, 35° 24hr: 34/58° Shoveled paths are widening and snow is pulling back from the foundation and base of large trees, but at least 90% of the yard is still snow-covered; average of several samples = 2.0" Forgot it was SWE Monday! Went back out to dig a core using my 1lb metal coffee can and a shovel to get all the way down to the ground for SWE of 0.94" Yesterday was a good, slow, steady melt.
2/21/2017 8:00 AM T 0.0 M 1.0 M Mostly sunny, 24° 24hr: 23/48° Reporting snow cover this morning is hard: 75% of our yard is snow covered, and most of that is still 2" deep. Am reporting 1" as my best estimate of the bare + snow-covered ground. At 12:25pm yesterday a mature American Bald Eagle flew over our yard! (our lake borders Sparta Mountain WMA.)
2/22/2017 8:00 AM T 0.0 M 0.5 M Light sprinkles at OBS, 38° 24hr: 24 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /44° Almost 90% snow coverage on west and east sides of the house (ranging from 1" -2"). West side is down to approx 50% with ground showing through the former footprints in the snow. Reporting 0.5"
2/23/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Hazy sun, with frost on the gauge, 34° 24hr: 34/53° Another slow melt day. SW facing front yard is down to a T of snow, but both side yards still have significant snow, approx 50% snow cover over 1" deep. Pond is 1/2 open water.
2/24/2017 8:00 AM T 0.0 M 0.0 M Sunny, 52° 24hr: 34 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /64° A few drops of rain in the gauge this morning. Snow remains only in places where it had been shoveled or plowed. Pond is open around all of the edges with one raft of ice still floating in the middle. Fish are stirring too. Tiny buds of snowdrops poking out of the ground. Quite early...
2/25/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Mostly cloudy, 54° with heavy dew. 24hr: 52/71° Almost continual flocks of geese calling in large "V" formations, flying north since before sunrise. Ice is completely gone from the pond. The first blooms of this garden season, a patch of Snowdrops, opened in the pond garden. Early for all.
2/26/2017 7:30 AM 0.70 T M 0.0 M Cloudy, 30° with a disk of ice on top of the water in the gauge. 24hr: 30/65° Pounding rain, wind, lighning and thunder yesterday with pots tossed all around the patio steps. Temps dropped 17° between 5pm and 6:10pm. Saw a few snowflakes falling on my way back from the gauge this morning.

3/1/2017 8:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M 0.0 M Overcast, 53° 24hr: 38/60° The pond garden is awash in snowdrops! Early, but beautiful!
3/2/2017 8:00 AM 0.48 0.0 M 0.0 M Mostly cloudy, windy, 38° 24hr: 38/60° Outdoor chairs flipped over, firewood cover blown across the yard, and some things blown off the house. The wind was really roaring early this morning! Between 9 & 9:30am yesterday had several blasts of lightning and loud thunder, followed by heavy, wind-driven rain. Spring peepers heard across the lake last evening. Uh-oh.
3/4/2017 8:00 AM T T M 0.0 M Mostly sunny, 15° 24hr: 13/36° Several periods of brief, light snow yesterday, but the snow-quall that came through at 4:30pm produced white out conditions and a covering of snow. Snow cover lasted for a couple of hours on the ground.
3/5/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Sunny, 8° 24hr: 6/27° Ties lowest temperature for this winter 1/9/17. The hole in the pond ice kept open by the bubbler is a magnet for birds and squirrels. Liquid water makes it a very "happening" place this morning!

3/11/2017 8:00 AM 0.26 2.8 0.27 3.0 M Mostly cloudy, 14° 24hr: 11/38° Ice is back over the pond & had to dig out my Yak-Tracs again. I see why we're supposed to measure just as the snow stops and not wait until the next morning. I measured at noon as the snow was ending & there was 2.8" of additional snow since my 8am Obs for a total of 5.0" This morning the 'new' snow was down to 2.1" with the total snow on ground only 3.0" March sun + temps briefly in the high 30°s really made a dent in it.
3/12/2017 8:00 AM T T M 2.4 M Sunny, 13° 24hr: 11/26° A brief snow squall moved through around 4pm. Had to remember where under all the snow the garlic mustard was to harvest leaves for salad & found patches of crocuses up and in bloom under the snow too. Pond back to frozen; the small circle of water kept open by a bubbler is a big hit with birds!
3/13/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 2.2 0.36 Sunny, 13° 24hr: 12/30° There is a lot of drifting with the snow on the ground, as it has stayed fluffy. Representative samples ranged from 2.0" to 2.6" for a SWE this Monday of 0.36" Forecast looks like there'll be a lot more. Very cold overnight temps three days in a row: 11°, 11°, & 12° are not middle-of-March like...

3/15/2017 8:00 AM 1.72 13.0 M 17.0 M Party cloudy,15° 24hr: 13/27° "A Two Gauger!" Had to go swap out the gauge at 2:30pm because it had filled with snow within 1/2" of the top. Haven't had to change gauges in the middle of a storm in a long time. This was a snow/sleet mix; can't imagine what the snow totals would have been had it been all snow! Sent in Significant Weather Report at 2:30 of 16" on ground; SWE = 1.57" At OBS this morning there was an additional 0.15" SWE, but impossible to measure the additional snow that fell between 2:30pm and 8am this morning; there is just so much drifting & it buried the snowboard, so I couldn't find it to measure it; reported my best estimate. Will dig the snowboard out later today. Snow cover ranges from 15.5" - 18.7" A 2-day SWE of the storm = 2.48" Hope this melts slowly...
3/16/2017 8:00 AM T T M 15.0 M Sunny, 19° 24hr: 15 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /28° Several rounds of snow squalls moved through yesterday. Despite temperatures staying under freezing 2" of snow cover disappeared. The strong winds did move it around a lot too, with more drifting than the day before. Wind blew the wind-sock down AGAIN! Sixth time this winter!
3/17/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 12.5 M Sunny, 22° 24hr: 19 [yesterday am's reset] /40° Dogs continue to 'go to the bathroom' in the shoveled paths and won't yet venture forth into the snowpack. Still using my high rubber wellies and yardstick in place of the usual metal ruler.
3/18/2017 8:00 AM T T M 11.5 M Overcast, with an occasional snowflake, 32° 24hr: 19/47° Large slabs of snow/ice are sliding off the metal roof & crashing to the ground. Snowcover now has a slight icy crust on top.
3/19/2017 8:00 AM 0.08 0.8 0.07 12.0 M Overcast, 29° 24hr: 28/39° Early afternoon a brief burst of graupel that left a dusting. Late afternoon approx 2 hours of light to moderate snow, resulting in another 0.8" Quite amazing to have a snowfall stay around so long in mid-March.
3/20/2017 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 11.0 2.06 Sunny, 22° 24hr: 22/54° Not sure the Monday core sample got right to the bottom or not; the snow is very crusty now with layers of icier material in the stack, and it had to be pushed down very deep into the snowpack.
3/21/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 9.5 M Cloudy, 35° 24hr: 22 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /49° Our 54lb dog ventured out on top of the snow pack yesterday (instead of keeping to the shoveled paths) and the snow held her weight for the first time.
3/22/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.8 M Mostly cloudy, windy, 27° 24hr: 27/58° The snowpack is very hard to pierce, even with the point of the metal ruler; and the frozen footprints out to the gauge are difficult to walk in. I'm bringing ski poles tomorrow!
3/23/2017 8:00 AM T T M 8.0 M Sunny, 15° 24hr: 14/33° Used a ski pole to walk off the path to the gauge on untrammeled snow; the frozen, hard foot prints in the path were really difficult to walk on/around. The point of the ski pole pierced the icy top layer so I could take four samples, with an average of 8." A few rounds of snow flurries yesterday morning, no accumulation.
3/24/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.0 M Cloudy, 31° 24hr: 15 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /43° Every night the snowpack re-freezes it gets harder to poke the metal ruler through to measure depth. Fifteen days of straight snow cover on the ground --in the middle of March-- is very odd.
3/25/2017 8:00 AM 0.02 T M 6.0 M Overcast, 38° 24hr: 31 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /48° A brief period of rain/graupel mix yesterday late morning. Still 100% snow coverage with average of 6" on the ground. Nice, slow, steady melt so far seeping into the ground and not running off. Front sump pump is 1/3 full.
3/26/2017 8:00 AM 0.03 0.0 M 4.0 M Overcast, 33° 24hr: 33/52° Slow melt-off continues with shoveled paths widening, a circle of ground visible around the base of the large maples, and even a few spots of earth appearing in the well worn path to the gauge. Lost 2" of snowpack between yesterday & today's OBS. Sump pump holding at 1/3 full.
3/27/2017 8:00 AM 0.21 0.0 M 3.0 1.29 Raining, 34° 24hr: 33/36° Open ground increasing along sides of shoveled paths, large trees, and the house foundation, and in some footprinted, heavily walked areas. As snow pulls back from the foundation, crocuses that had begun blooming in early March's 60° temps are croaked. The snowdrops however, are blooming on despite the 6° & 8° temps that followed, and despite being buried under snow for 18 days. Snow on ground of 3" is an average of 5 samples of natural snow. There's a reason they built the ski resorts on the back of this mountain!
3/28/2017 8:00 AM 0.17 0.0 M 0.5 M Fog, 39° 24hr: 34 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /54° Wow! What a reduction in the snowpack. No snow left on roof. 2/3 of pond ice-free. Almost 50% of the yard is now snow free; the remaining natural snow ranges from 1" - 2.2" --averaging 1". So I'm reporting 0.5" No run-off with this long, steady melt, thank goodness...

I've learned that their arrival almost always coincides with the very first blooms opening on the forsythia. So I knew yesterday they'd be in the pond that evening! Also found a newt while cleaning up the patio. These are reliable local markers of Spring in our garden.

7/21/2017 8:00 AM 0.11 M M M M Hazy sun, humid, 70° with moderate dew. 24hr: 66/82° Early evening's radar looked like we were going to be clobbered by a severe thunderstorm, but the system went around us leaving only a little rain.
7/22/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Thick haze, 68° 24hr: 65/81° Third straight day of 80°+ temps. Yesterday afternoon heard the first annual cicadas droning. That's unusual because there are a few tadpoles still in the pond that have not changed to toads and left the water this late in July.
7/23/2017 8:00 AM 0.05 M M M M Hazy sun, 67° 24hr: 66/79° Light rain after 6pm during the lake picnic; looked like it was going to be far worse on radar.
7/24/2017 7:25 AM 0.38 M M M M Overcast, 63° 24hr: 63/74° With still a week to go, total rain to date for July is 6.81" --and without any tropical systems. A few tadpoles still left in the pond; most very tiny toads have moved out into the gardens.
7/25/2017 8:00 AM 0.57 M M M M Cloudy, 58° 24hr: 57/67° A few rumbles of distant thunder last nigh at 7pm.
7/26/2017 8:00 AM 0.11 M M M M Partly cloudy, 61° with moderate dew. 24hr: 58/70° A short, early evening period of moderate rain. A TV meteorologist yesterday reported a far lower rain total for the month of July so far than we have had here. 7.49" in July here.
7/27/2017 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Cloudy, 62° 24hr: 59/69° Unsure if the 0.01" is precipitation or dew. Our dog woke us up at 5:45am barking at a large bear walking past our living room bay window. Haven't seen many this year.
7/28/2017 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Hazy sun, 64° 24hr: 61/69° A few sprinkles around noon; another batch later in the day.
7/29/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast, breezy, 61° 24hr: 61/76° Tiny toadlets (little bigger than a seseme seed each) have moved from the pond and are moving out into the lawn and gardens. This is almost a month late for The Running of the Toads.
7/30/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 57° 24hr: 52/69° What a beautiful morning!
7/31/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 59° with moderate dew. 24hr: 53/73° Total for CoCoRaHS July = 7.51" --a lot of rain for a month with no tropical storms. Similar to August 2011 with 7.89" (TS Irene) and September 2011 with 7.67" (TS Lee). I looked at the snowfall for the winter of 2011-2012: a dumper Halloween snowfall (and Sandy!) followed by a winter of little snow.
8/1/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 61° with moderate dew. 24hr: 57/79°
8/2/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, 64° 24hr: 61 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /77°
8/3/2017 8:00 AM 1.06 M M M M Hazy sun & light fog, 60° 24hr: 58/77° Dark skies and approaching thunder began around 2:30pm. By 3pm it was raining heavily, with loud thunder and some lightning. At 5:40pm sent a Significant WR of 0.99" while it was still raining. Additional 0.07" from that time to OBS this morning.
8/4/2017 8:00 AM 0.04 M M M M Cloudy, 65° 24hr: 60/78° Rain dripping off the edges of leaves. Very sticky.
8/5/2017 8:00 AM 0.36 M M M M Overcast, humid, 65° 24hr: 65/78° Rain and serious thunder rolled in around 3am. A dash to close all the windows!

8/7/2017 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Raining, 58° 24hr: 56/68° Started shortly before OBS.

8/9/2017 8:00 AM T M M M M Sunny, 54° with heavy morning dew. 24hr: 52/72° I'm not sure if this was a trace of precipitation or just a lot of dew. It was almost up to the 0.01" line in the gauge.

8/12/2017 8:00 AM 1.95 M M M M Clearing skies, 62° 24hr: 60/75° Light rain started early in the evening but got very heavy overnight. A few lightning and thunder bolts also. Gone by daybreak.
8/13/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, with just a few clouds coming in from the north, 64° 24hr: 63/72° There were 4 drops in the gauge this morning; guessing it's dew and not precipitation. At High Point State Park for the last summer concert, and a passing shower did leave a "T" there. A few sumac trees on top of the mountain are already changing color!
8/14/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cloudy, 59° with moderate dew. 24hr: 56/73° Two drops of dew in the gauge this morning.

8/18/2017 8:00 AM 0.31 M M M M Winding down to very light rain, 67° 24hr: 60 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /75°
8/19/2017 8:00 AM 0.14 M M M M Sunny, still, and very humid, 68° 24hr: 67/75° Some thunder & lightning with the batch of late afternoon rain.
8/20/2017 8:00 AM T M M M M Sunny, 64° with a light breeze. 24hr: 61/77° Around 10pm a band of storms moved by near us. Lots of rolling thunder, but only a couple of drops of rain.
8/21/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun with some contrails too, 59° 24hr: 57/73° Two drops in the gauge this morning from dew. Hope skies clear more for eclipse viewing!
8/22/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M HHH, 70° Already feeling hot through thick, hazy sun; dead calm. 24hr: 59 [definitely yesterday morning's reset!] /77°
8/23/2017 8:00 AM 0.09 M M M M Sunny, breezy, 65° 24hr: 65/81° --the first day all August that we topped 80° here. Radars last night looked like we were going to be clobbered, and was surprised to see only 0.09" in the gauge this morning.
8/24/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 56° with very heavy dew. 24hr: 55/72° So much dew in the gauge this morning it almost came up to the 0.01" line.

9/3/2017 8:00 AM 0.53 0.0 M M M Raining, 54° 24hr: 45 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /59° Remnants of Harvey started as light rain at 5pm. Heavier rain didn't start until 8pm, so with the ground moistened first, hopefully most of this seeped into the ground --where it is needed badly.
9/4/2017 8:00 AM 0.28 M M M M Sunny, 54° with heavy dew. 24hr: 53/61° Two day total of Harvey remnants was 0.81"
9/5/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy, 60° with heavy dew. 24hr: 54/71° 4 drops in the gauge this morning, likely dew. Yesterday saw leaves fluttering down in the wind. No color yet.

9/12/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly cloudy with peeks of sun through the hazy skies, 49° and moderate dew. 24hr: 44 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /64°

9/17/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, 60° with moderate dew (3 drops). 24hr: 59/72° Leaves falling, but still no change of color of the trees.
9/18/2017 8:00 AM T M M M M Overcast, 62° with heavy dew. 24hr: 59/72° Not sure if this was dew or a T of precipitation. 5 drops in the gauge and when a breeze came up it looked like a shower; however it was only 'raining' under the large maple trees. So I think it was drops of dew falling off the tips of the leaves. Skies are lightening as the morning goes on.
9/19/2017 6:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast/cloudy? 63° with moderate dew. 24hr: 62/71° All the leaves down in yards and in the roads are brown and crispy, no color.

9/21/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly cloudy, 62° with heavy dew (5 drops). 24hr: 61/72° Leaves still not coloring up, but lots of brown crunchy leaves starting to accumulate on the ground. [Frightening note: after entering my morning report I sometimes look at the reports from other CoCoRaHS volunteers from states experiencing major weather events, like Harvey and Irma. After sending in today's report for my location, I checked Puerto Rico. It was empty. "No reports found." That gave a whole new dimension to the word "devastating," that after 9am no one had been able to send in a report.]
9/22/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly sunny, 59° with little dew. 24hr: 58/76° Officially Fall, but not by the looks of our vegetable or perennial gardens. Annuals are looking a bit beat.

9/24/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, 59° with moderate dew. 24hr: 57/75° Harvested the last of the zucchinis, but tomatoes, lettuce, and all herbs still very productive. Trees turning a dull rust color; none of the vivid colors of autumn.
9/25/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 63° with heavy dew. 24hr: 60/78° Had the A/C on last night; normally this time of year we've got a fire going in the fireplace.
9/26/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Partly cloudy, 61° with moderate dew. 24hr: 60/79° The ground is bone dry. We haven't had a substantial rain here (> 0.10) since 9/7/17.

9/28/2017 8:00 AM T M M M M Sunny, breezy, 60° with occasional stronger gusts. Humidity gone. 24hr: 59/79° A few drops fell yesterday afternoon with a large, passing cloud.
9/29/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 46° with moderate dew. 24hr: 46/67° Cool weather seems to be triggering wildlife: last night and around dawn the first honking of flocks of Canadian Geese flying high overhead. Also, after a quite late summer, our dog alerted us to a bear(s) walking through our yard overnight -TWICE.
9/30/2017 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Partly cloudy, 49° with moderate dew. 24hr: 47 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /60° Have no idea when this 0.02" occurred. Total for September = 2.41" of which 2.19 occurred in the first 7 days of the month. Ground dry!
