Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/5/2016 9:00 AM 0.50 M M M M grey sky, not raining now. All is still below, but the wind is whipping the tops of the cottonwoods. The conifers are quiet.
10/6/2016 9:30 AM 0.98 M M M M grey, not raining
10/7/2016 8:30 AM 1.00 M M M M raining lightly. The stream is no longer clear, now with a brown tint, as has happened ever since the upstream logging
10/8/2016 9:20 AM 0.28 M M M M grey but light,a band of brightness over Portland in the west
10/9/2016 9:29 AM 1.46 M M M M a steady fine rain, fine enough to create the effect of mist, no visibility past the end of the yard
10/10/2016 9:20 AM 1.36 M M M M blue sky, soft white clouds, sunshine
10/11/2016 5:00 AM 0.02 M M M M dark
10/12/2016 9:00 AM T M M M M A bright and sunny morning, an overcast afternoon. Walking rustling through leaves on the trails; the stream down from its high, running clear again.
10/13/2016 8:50 AM 0.77 M M M M steady rain when I emptied the gauge, now heavier rain. waiting for the power to go out. It had not rained much even past midnight, so all in gauge was during the early am hours
10/14/2016 8:20 AM 1.92 M M M M Clouds moving briskly south to north across a pale blue sky
10/15/2016 9:15 AM 1.02 M M M M Steady but not heavy rain. Stream is muddy and fierce. I was able to get to and pull the second temperature logger without getting swept away yesterday. Two more to go. We have several years of stream temperatures if there is ever anyone at CoCoRahs who wants to correlate precipitation, recorded air temperature, and temperature in a large, salmon spawning stream. Temperature records are kept with Burke Strobel at City of Portland Water Bureau. This stream, Gordon Creek, also is the domestic water supply for the city of Corbett, so water is removed upstream and this complicates interpreting the data.
10/16/2016 9:20 AM 0.77 M M M M grey, but not raining. The wind stayed high here. I have not checked for more tree damage today, but yesterday only found thrown branches.
10/17/2016 9:20 AM 0.81 M M M M overcast, not raining, wind in the treetops. Just now, at noon, thunder followed by a brief downpour.
10/18/2016 9:20 AM 0.86 M M M M overcast, air is wet, but not raining.
10/19/2016 8:45 AM 0.05 M M M M pale blue sky with wispy white clouds and a three quarter moon
10/20/2016 9:00 AM 0.25 M M M M late entry, from memory
10/21/2016 9:20 AM 0.60 M M M M A misty night, a misty morning, stream continues full.
10/22/2016 9:20 AM 0.31 M M M M pale blue sky, sunshine lighting up the tops of the cottonwoods, with the last of their golden leaves trembling in the light breeze
10/23/2016 10:00 AM 0.09 M M M M white sky, bits of blue showing through
10/24/2016 9:20 AM T M M M M surprisingly, grass is barely damp. overcast and grey, no breeze, still beautiful, quiet, with golden leaves on trees, on the ground. Stream has cleared with the cessation in heavy rain, still high but down from its peak.
10/25/2016 9:20 AM 0.27 M M M M grey sky, subdued light
10/26/2016 7:30 AM 0.40 M M M M lightly raining
10/27/2016 8:30 AM 0.84 M M M M
10/28/2016 9:20 AM 0.15 M M M M sunny and bright, deep blue sky with white cobblestone clouds, drifting south to north, the slightest flutter of the remaining golden leaves in the top of the cottonwoods. all this marred only by the squadron of six black helicopters flying in formation below the clouds, crossing above me.
10/29/2016 9:20 AM 0.22 M M M M sunny, with a blue and white sky earlier, now more subdued, should have gone for a bike ride this am.
10/30/2016 9:20 AM 0.08 M M M M raining lightly. I don't feel wind but I hear it. A leaf thrown up comes straight down. The remaining leaves at the tops of the cottonwoods are fluttering, and the high branches of the conifers are swaying. It is always interesting how the wind often does not come down lower here, even though I am on a rise, staying high to the east, dropping to a ravine in the west. With every new clearcut, however, more wind does get through, or I guess it is more that it is more frequent for the wind to get down to the house and human level.
10/31/2016 9:30 AM 0.58 M M M M grey, not raining, the slightest bit of flutter in the highest leaves of the cottonwoods

Not raining now, but the heavens did cry a little during the night when they heard Trump was elected, mourning all the damage that will be done to trees and earth and air, and all the federal lands shifted to states or to private owners who manage only for profit. A sad, sad, day for America the Beautiful.

11/18/2016 9:15 AM 0.02 M M M M grey and cold. I finally saw the face of the moon last night. The supermoon is gone, but the moon's facial features were so clearly etched and expressive, and she was so bright. even if not full, even if not at super, she was a beautiful sight among the treetops and passing clouds. For a science-based person, I feel her sorrow so strongly, as she looks down at what we do. The sun is more distant and disinterested; he has other planets. The moon has only us.

Hope I get frost flowers again this year. 2:45pm a big thunder roll followed by fine, pinhead size ice pellets, delighting my grandnephew from Hawaii. Enough to turn the open ground white, lasted about 15 min. At 3:50, mostly melted, when a new flurry of bigger hail fell for about 10 minutes. G-N is in heaven, has before never been in ice or snow falling from the sky

12/13/2016 9:20 AM 0.07 M M M M a glorious bright and sunny day, etchings of frost making each blade of grass and leafy weed a work of art, cottonwoods catching the light on their top branches. Cottonwoods get so little respect, yet of all the deciduous trees around my yard, they manage to stay so lovely even with bare branches, shining light and dark patterns against the sky. Meaning to ask, should I share some of this year's frost flowers with CoCoRahs again? They are so completely tied to weather.
12/14/2016 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M grey, cold, dry. More frost flowers have appeared, in different places than before. Snow began to fall early afternoon; 2 inches by nightfall. After dark the dogs ran into my room, where they are not allowed, and pointed their noses out the sliding doors. A herd of massive elk stood in the yard, dark brown beasts against white snow, bigger than percheron, snow blowing all around them, a magical sight. They seemed to become aware of the dogs, and slowly turned and faded into the trees. The big bull stayed behind a bit, watching us.
12/15/2016 9:00 AM 0.27 2.0 M 2.0 M all is white, not snowing at 9, lightly snowing now. A fine and for here dry snow. The elk prints criss cross the yard, right up to but not on the patio, around the sides of the house to the back but not up to the door, going in and out of the woods on all sides. The dreaded fence for the dogs is being built; how lucky they visited me before it is done and keeps them out. snow is more like 3 inches in many places
12/16/2016 9:00 AM T M M M M when I opened my eyes early this morning, there were eleven elk in the yard, right up to the bedroom sliding door. I was able to take photos but only from across the room and through the window; as soon as they sensed movement inside my room, they took off. Photos are poor, but two do have the gauge in the background if you want one. The day was sunny, bright, cold.
12/17/2016 9:00 AM T M M 1.5 M a few desultory snowflakes falling. so many elk prints tearing up the yard, hard to find a place to measure snow depth. I heard two isolated gunshots this am. I fear someone shot my elk.

1/2/2017 9:00 AM 0.30 M M 3.5 M sunshine, blue and white sky early, tree tops shining their white on green, now overcast, and I have not even been to the stream yet. Yesterday there was hail beginning a little before 3pm. Up higher, tiny opaque pellets, rounded, like a small version of popcorn snow. When I got down lower, to the stream, the hail was more translucent and angled with flat faces. The beautiful frost flowers of New Year's Eve were a brief gift. When the temperature drops below twenty this week, there should be another gift of crazy ice on the streams.
1/3/2017 8:00 AM T M M 3.5 M sunshine. Hummingbirds, at least some, still alive, juggling frozen and defrosted feeders for them.

1/7/2017 9:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M 3.0 M Grey sky, somber light. By now, however, there was freezing rain about 10 am followed by sleet, some popcorn snow style of rounded, opaque hail, then snow, which continues off and on. Water is finally back on, at least as long as I have power. Ice on the streams has continued, so beautiful, and makes all the winter traumas worthwhile.
1/8/2017 9:20 AM 0.35 M M 3.0 M Raining. Sad, there was finally enough snow that I was going to try skiing some of my trails, now turning into slush. Power outage weather; so glad I have had water back to stock up.
1/9/2017 9:20 AM 0.97 M M 3.0 M Grey sky, but lots of light. Yesterday each branch down to the tiniest twig, each needle and frond, all had a glistening sheath of ice, like a festival of lights when the sun came out.

1/11/2017 9:00 AM 0.37 0.0 M 3.0 M wind and blowing snow last night, very little visibility on the Gordon Creek switchbacks coming home, and a massive fir with a couple smaller friends blocking my own drive, had to walk the last part. I posted road conditions on our neighborhood website and mentioned my tree. A neighbor saw it and came out in the middle of the night with chainsaws and got a big enough space cleared for me to get my car home. Good thing; so much snow by morning--- when I was going to deal with it-- that it is unlikely I could have retrieved my car for days. I am probably blocked into this beautiful place for the duration. Steady snow falling earlier, now letting up as I write this.

1/16/2017 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 2.0 M sunny and bright. Yesterday a friend talked me into going to Oaks Bottom, a frozen lake in SE Portland area. He did not talk me into skates, unfortunately, but I did get to see him out on the lake with a hockey stick, and slid along on the ice with a hockey stick, occasionally managing to return it. May be the last time in my lifetime that Oaks Bottom freezes solid enough to go out on the ice.Just one more of the many silver linings to the weather disaster in Portland.

1/22/2017 9:20 AM 0.52 M M M M Not raining now. Grey sky, but opening to blue and light over the City of Roses. It took me a long time to warm up after returning wet and cold from the Women's March yesterday. Uwe ka lani; the heavens weeped over Trump. It was glorious to be there with over 100,000 others all asking for the path of compassion and democracy, rather than the rule of greed, and corporate takeover of our government. The friendly police had pink hats or flowers in their buttonholes; not exactly like the 60s, though the same shared camaraderie and determination of the massed protesters.

2/6/2017 10:20 AM 1.16 M M M M a fine light snow, then the beautiful kind, dancing as it came down, now a light rain. The snow made a great wind sock, often as expected slanting from south to north, but much of the time almost sideways, north to south. Sometimes, standing in the middle of my little living room, I could turn from looking out front to looking out back, and the snow would be slanting in opposite directions.. Do I have little, personal winds and breezes, crafted by my topography and trees? In Hawaii, each individual wind and breeze is a being, with its own name. My brother in law's dog was named Kakea, after a certain wind of which my brother in law was fond. I should try to find out whether the native Americans have names for the individual winds here, so I can address them by name.

There are only a few things I covet, amongst all the baseball caps, and the ax was one of them. All the women around me were jealous.

3/28/2017 9:20 AM 0.18 M M M M grey, wet, not raining. a snowy day at Teacup yesterday; I expected much more rain in the gauge. somebody has been eating some of my favorite trillium down by the stream.
3/29/2017 9:20 AM 0.49 M M M M a wet world, misty rain, ribes sanguinium covered in pink.
3/30/2017 6:00 AM 0.29 M M M M I did not write this down, from memory. I checked the map to make sure it was not out of line. This is the morning I needed to give commentary in Salem on HB 3226, to reform the Forest Practices Act, and I mis-set the alarm. I did get there in time.
3/31/2017 7:20 AM 0.17 M M M M grey. Later a lovely day up at Teacup Lake, shirt sleeve nordic skiing
4/1/2017 11:44 AM 0.04 M M M M light misty rain, mist to the yard and in the canyon. I did not check the gauge until late; probably would have only been trace if I checked by 9.Trilium are up most places, shy and lovely in yesterday's late afternoon light
4/2/2017 9:20 AM 0.07 M M M M grey. I was in Portland earlier, sunshine there, later yesterday some off and on sun here
4/3/2017 9:15 AM 0.01 M M M M sunshine, play blue sky, puffy whites to the west
4/4/2017 7:00 AM T M M M M a grey morning, but a hopeful sky
4/5/2017 9:20 AM 0.04 M M M M a lovely cobblestone sky of white clouds against blue, clearing to blue in the west, with a grey cloud bank on the western horizon
4/6/2017 8:20 AM 0.26 M M M M mist and rain, houseguests here of course, missed the chance to walk to the stream yesterday with sun breaks lighting up the bright, clean-washed green of spring. Just a note: auto correct always changes sunbreak to snubbers. If you see a snubber in my note, it is a sunbreak
4/7/2017 7:35 AM 0.14 M M M M Grey but bright. All is growing leaps and bounds. A glorious afternoon yesterday.

4/14/2017 9:00 AM 0.09 M M M M grey sky overhead, a bright band of light over the City of Roses, her buildings shining in the sun 4:47pm crashing thunder, repeatedly. 4:55 pm the sky has opened up and hailing like crazy. I was just about to take the dogs on the hike to the stream.
4/15/2017 9:10 AM 0.24 M M M M Sunny and bright; a grey bottom white top cloud bank on the western horizon. Glorious evening light coming back from the stream yesterday. The trillium are turning pink..... some of my favorites to photograph either got eaten or never came up this year. My quadrillion has not appeared.
4/16/2017 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M grey but bright. sunshine seemed a promise, but never really came. No rain until after darkness fell. Got home late, walked the dogs at dusk. Two large owls did not speak, though I am guessing barred owl. Perhaps it was just one, invisibly moving from one end of the property to the other. Small bats, with their crazy flight, I am hoping not on the menu for owls.
4/17/2017 9:00 AM 0.11 M M M M Cloudy but bright, blue sky showing to the west, now greyed
4/18/2017 9:20 AM 0.82 M M M M glorious morning, blue sky and wispy white clouds overhead, fat puffy white clouds tumbled up to the west. Now beginning to cloud over, and I have not made it to the stream yet! Most of today's rain in the gauge fell during the night, a hard loud rain, pounding down with cheerful abandon. 11:10: hailing like crazy.
4/19/2017 9:20 AM 0.04 M M M M raining. glorious day yesterday, a brief hail bout, then sun in and out, sunshine alternating with subdued, all clean green and spring.
4/20/2017 7:40 AM 0.50 M M M M grey, not raining
4/21/2017 8:30 AM 0.10 M M M M glorious sunshine
4/22/2017 9:20 AM 0.08 M M M M grey sky, but bright light, the sun shining through strong enough for sharply demarcated shadows on stone and grass. Now, as I write, all is grey and somber. A wet world, but no rain so far since I have been up.
4/23/2017 9:20 AM 0.04 M M M M a wet world, grey sky, an occasional raindrop. Yesterday provided a pleasant late afternoon, sun in and out lighting up the trillium. The sunset was in bands of pink and light, seeming to imitate the pink and white bands on the petals of the aging trillium. Trillium are so perfect when they emerge, pristine and white, but they do age gracefully, and some are now presenting their fruit in the center of their triumvirate of shapely green, petals falling away.
4/24/2017 9:20 AM 0.74 M M M M raining. Lots of time to enjoy the trails in between the more drenching rain yesterday

4/27/2017 9:15 AM 0.36 M M M M grey. yesterday rainy, but lovely, when the sun did come out it lit up all the bright clean green, bleeding heart glowing in pink translucence, water drops sparkling and shooting rays from every leaf. Thunder x3, 2:45, 51, then again later, rain started in between the first two, lightly, heavy after the second . 3:29 loud cracks of thunder preceded and folowed by hail alternating with rain.

5/5/2017 8:00 AM 0.22 M M M M grey, not raining, wet, but rocks already drying. Clouds become fatter and whiter to the west. Yesterday afternoon and night was full of thunder, but no hail, and not even rain really, not until late. I went out on the tractor anyway, late afternoon into dusk, with trepidation. Trying to think out whether the roll bar would attract lightening to me, or divert it. Since not grounded, probably attract. Auwe. But the sky never lit up following the thunder rolls.

6/7/2017 10:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M barely damp grass, overcast sky, haze to the west. My two foolish young dogs ran out the gate as I was driving in last night. I was up much of the night searching for them. Finally found them, exhausted, coming out of the woods to my calls and whistles. Hard to say who was more relieved, me or the pups. Not sure if they met up with whoever it was they went after, but neither has bear swipes or serious injuries. The hiking cat made a show of still being here, as good as a dog, but seems glad that the pups are back.
6/8/2017 9:20 AM 0.45 M M M M raining lightly. More in the gauge than I expected. I hauled water in 5 gallon buckets on the tractor to the far flung blueberries yesterday, thinking there would not be enough to soak the ground.

6/10/2017 9:20 AM 0.46 M M M M overcast but not raining when I emptied the gauge; raining most of the time since. Yesterday was one of those rainy days, that when the sun comes out, the rain has prepared it to be the kind of beautiful, the kind of beautiful possible only when sunshine lights up the rain drenched world, in the fullness of spring.

And no rain predicted this week at all, nothing to clean the air. May we celebrate this day not just as a nation, but as citizens of this beautiful earth. This earth and all her life, animal and plant, and her dirt and stone, choose to love her, and choose to take care of all our brothers and sisters and our mother earth and her life. I am so lucky to live with beauty every day, but even here,in my forest, she is so fragile and so vulnerable to us. One nation under God, forgetting where we get our air, our water, our life.

8/2/2017 9:10 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Dry grass, dry world, blue sky without a cloud, the DBOP over Portland is dark and has no distinct edge, a dirty haze extending up into the sky, a dirty sky today. The earth and sky alike crave the cleansing of rain. We are more than 7 weeks without rain now. The streams are low, the little perennials may dry up completely soon

I mistakenly put 7 weeks of no rain previously, when I meant 6 wks. Tomorrow will put us at 7. Oh you who always complain about Oregon always raining, are you finally noticing what our summers can be like? Will you at least love the rain a little when it returns
8/5/2017 9:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M damp almost wet grass, or atlas some weed leaves are wet, blue sky, no clouds, DBOP but sky is less dirty and smokey. It seems I spend most of the day watering berries and plants, water from the spring even though I left most things go brown. I do not want to lose the blueberries or the young mulberry and weeping mulberry or the new ginkgo trees. My orchids are having summer break on the porch again, now that it is not quite so hot.

8/19/2017 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Dry grass, blue and white sky, some of the clouds verging on puffy whites status. Now it is getting close to time of day for eclipse, and no clear sky yet. Hopefully it will do better tomorrow, in Mollala. I still need to make a holder for one of my two pairs of eclipse glasses, to put it in front of my camera lens. If not able to do it in a way that works, will just hit the self timer at totality. Or not. Might be better just to hold my breath and watch.
8/21/2017 10:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I was not here, but since it is still zero on 8/22, I am jumping to the conclusion that it was zero. the problem with multidays is that when I look at the overall stats I think I have missed days. When you come up with the number of days reporting, 365 or less, I can't remember whether you count a multiday as 1, i.e. you count reports not days?
8/22/2017 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M dry grass, dry world, overcast sky. Eclipse was perfect, but I checked my camera and looked up and totality was over. So brief. I enjoyed the full partial, before and after, feeling the temperature changing. No bats though, no snakes stopped in mid slither. The forester where we were saw a cougar earlier, but the cat did not come out again as the shadow of the moon progressed. Totality is nothing like partiality. I wish the moon would do this once a week, Sunday morning maybe, and we could all join in appreciating all that is more than our small though wonderful selves.

9/8/2017 9:20 AM 0.02 M M M M dry grass, sky a slightly rippled white, a hint of blue in the creases between the ridges. Thunder crashed late yesterday, followed by a little bit of rain, not enough to wet the ground, but such a sign of hope. Uwe ka lani, ola ka honua. The heavens weep, and the earth sprouts forth. There is so much to weep for, and we need much more than these few tears to stop the fires.
9/9/2017 9:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M dry grass, overcast sky
9/10/2017 9:20 AM 0.07 M M M M Mist earlier. Even such a small blessing, less and a tenth of an inch, makes the world seem as if it could survive these fires. There is a meeting with our fire dept tonight. I unpacked the suitcase by the door. Probably too soon. Wind is from the east again on Monday.
9/12/2017 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M dry grass, blue sky covered with light brush strokes of white, haze and a broad, smoky DBOP to the west. Yesterday was less smoky here, but in the evening suddenly my house filled with the smell of fresh, fragrant, wood smoke, instinctive fear rising again, fear the fire was again approaching. Just the winds changing, just the winds. Today I will go to town and fetch my photo drives from my friend's basement in town, leaving other things there a while longer.....
9/13/2017 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M dry grass, blue sky lightly brushed with soft white, haze and DBOP to the west
9/14/2017 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M dry grass, blue sky mostly covered by soft white, clearing to the east, DBOP. Never downloaded the field photos with all the fire stuff happening, and my photo drives in a basement in town. Not the first time I have taken them and forgotten.
9/15/2017 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M dry grass, pale blue sky with an occasional dab of white, haze and DBOP to the west
9/16/2017 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M dry grass, smoke blankets the land again, wind has turned in our direction, fire now 45,000+ acres and moving toward us. Dogs are anxious. The fire folks don't think there is significant danger that it will get this far, not like the crazy Mon-Tues at the beginning.
9/18/2017 9:25 AM 1.52 M M M M glorious rain. A wet world. Very lightly raining now. Giving thanks the fire did not get to me, mourning all that was lost.
9/19/2017 8:00 AM 0.98 M M M M a wet world, crystal clear Gordon Creek now running dirty, and higher, not raining when I emptied the gauge, but moderate rain restarting a few minutes later. I feel as if the heavens are pouring bucket after bucket on the fire
9/20/2017 9:29 AM 1.45 M M M M overcast, not raining now, a touch of moisture in the air, bright light beginning to pick out individual clouds to the west, and illuminate buildings in Portland
9/21/2017 9:00 AM 0.52 M M M M overcast sky, not raining now. Most of the rain fell during the day, as the gauge was at 0.48 yesterday afternoon. Some but not all of the usually perennial streams are running again. Gordon Creek is no longer abysmally low.
9/22/2017 9:20 AM 0.03 M M M M Sunshine and blue sky with soft white clouds when I read the gauge. Now overcast

9/26/2017 8:00 AM T M M M M wet grass, pale blue sky with soft wisps of white, haze in the west. It made a pretense of raining yesterday. Today at the pond the smoke smell is strong again. It is dry again, and warm. Hopefully the fire will not gather momentum again. With the hard rains we thought it was over.
9/27/2017 9:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M dry grass, cloudless pale blue sky, haze and DBOP in the west. Wind is rippling the tops of the cottonwoods, always so responsive to any movement of the air. No wind at ground level.
9/28/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M wet grass, clear sky overhead, haze in the west, DBOP. Wind in the treetops, less smokey
9/29/2017 9:25 AM 0.01 M M M M light drizzle, overcast sky, the lid of clouds lifting a bit, like the edge of a pot lid, over Portland in the west, opening up light onto the city. The east wind and heat was scary yesterday, but the fire did not move.
9/30/2017 9:20 AM 0.49 M M M M overcast, light coming through over the City to the west. All the rain came in one fairly brief downpour yesterday afternoon. Nothing more overnight. 5:28PM torrential downpour, rain mixed with hail. 5:38 Thunder Just felled a tree blocking the road on top of myself, got caught out in the rain after I crawled out from under the tree, soaked. Fire, take that!

9/30/2016 10/04/2016 8:25 AM 5 0.30 M M raining lightly. Has the time passed for the unripe tomatoes and the never having ripened since I planted them figs? I had hoped to have a silver lining to this long and dry and unseasonably hot period. I should not complain though, having eaten enough tomatoes for a lifetime this year. It is good to be home.
11/5/2016 11/07/2016 7:15 AM 3 1.22 M M grey sky, bunching up into cloud shapes in the north
12/24/2016 12/28/2016 8:00 AM 5 0.84 0.0 M a wet world, a bright day, soft and fuzzy grey and white clouds cover much of the sky, with blue showing in between. Not as much precipitation as I expected while I was gone. The dreaded fence is almost finished enough for full dog freedom....... I need to get my Immigrants Welcome" sign up.
2/22/2017 2/25/2017 9:20 AM 4 0.82 0.0 M frost on the ground, sunny and bright. Wonderful nordic skiing in the Methow Valley, but glad to be home to dogs and stream.
