Most of Sep. 30 featured clouds, drizzle, and a northeasterly breeze, but heavier showers (with embedded thunder/lightning) fell starting around 5:45 pm and 10:30 pm. Even more rain fell in the pre-dawn hours. The sandy soils are squishy and saturated with moisture.

Daytime rain totaled 1.45", with a light, northerly wind and temperatures hovering in the mid-60s. Rain returned shortly before midnight, courtesy of Hurricane Matthew's closest approach, and ended a few minutes before the 7 am observation. This time, the rain (0.85") was accompanied by gusty, northerly winds and falling temperatures. At 7 am, it was cloudy and 53°F. Although there is some ponding of water in areas that had begun to dry out, rainfall was spread out enough to prevent flooding.

Evening conditions were perfect for the viewing (in the eastern sky) of the stunning 7:45 pm launch of the Antares rocket from Wallops Island, Virginia -- from just after launch through first-stage separation. Patches of fog formed overnight under moonlit skies; the current temperature is a mild 60°F.

The International Space Station passed nearly overhead just before 7:30 pm as part of a 6-minute passage from northwest to southeast. There was lots of illumination, ranging from bright sunshine to the glow of the supermoon. However, increasing clouds in the southern sky at observation led to a colorful sunrise.

Along I-95 at the airport, KRMN, hail drifts were still visible along the roadside more than 2 hours later, at 5 pm. The hail stripped vegetation, such as brown oak leaves and red maple buds, littering roadways.)
