Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/1/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hardly seems possible it is October today! The skies are overcast, but it is warmer at 59 degrees. Showers expected for most of the day. We really don't need any more rain right now. I said good by to summer yesterday when I took in the hummingbird feeders. I think all of the migrating birds have now gone south for the winter. I saw a flock of turkeys on the driveway, I think there were 8. That explains why the crows have been upset the past week! They don't like each other very much. The deer are starting to move around also.
10/2/2016 7:00 AM T M M M M A couple of very brief rain showers produced little moisture. The AM temp was 56 degrees under an overcast sky that has given way to a clear blue one now. The next rain is expected on Tues. night and Wed. Hopefully we will be able to get the driveway sealed before it rains again!
10/3/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain, sunny skies, and a temp of 50 degrees.
10/4/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A warm overcast day with a temp of 59 degrees. Fall is expected to return for the week end with highs maybe in the 40's. We are having one of the warmest falls in years. More rain is expected tonight and for the next couple of days. Hope the driveway dries before it rains. Keeping four dogs and a cat out of the wet tar is not an easy task!! With no sunshine today it will probable take days to dry, especially if it rains tonight.
10/5/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Warm again today at 63 degrees and just starting to rain. The rain is supposed to continue through tomorrow, then turn much colder. We have not even come close to a frost yet, so it is about time since we are almost a week into October. The trees have begun to turn, but the maples must have some leaf disease, so the edges just turn brown and fall off. We have mowed twice and cannot keep ahead of the many, many falling maple leaves! With all of the rain we have had, everything is so green it should be a stark contrast with the colored leaves, but I don't think they are going to be very pretty this year.
10/6/2016 7:00 AM 0.11 M M M M A dreary and overcast day with a temp of 54 degrees. If the sun comes out it is supposed to warm up into the 70's, probably for the last time this season. Frost is predicted for the low lying areas on Sat and Sun. We usually have a killing frost in late Sep., but this year has been warmer than usual for this late in the season. I'm just not ready for cold and snow!
10/7/2016 7:00 AM 0.06 M M M M Fall is definitely in the air this AM with a temp of 48 degrees under an overcast sky. High temp today is predicted to remain in the 60's, a contrast to what we have had the past few weeks. It is windy and I can see patches of blue sky now, so perhaps it will clear off and the sun will shine. Hopefully the weekend will be pleasant for the postponed Apple fest from two weeks ago. Gays Mills does not need any more weather problems since this is when they make most of their money. At least the apple crop turned out better then it was predicted to be last May. I've already had my caramel apple, cider doughnut and two batches of apple crisp. The apples are huge, due to all the rain late in the season.
10/8/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Woke up to bright sunshine in a clear blue October sky. No rain for a few days, but the high pressure is making the temps remain low also. Almost had frost this AM with a temp of just 36 degrees. Frost is predicted for tonight north of here, and perhaps here as well. We did take in a bunch of plants yesterday, and will finish today. Actually, we usually have frost in Sept., so this is late. Time to say good by to warm temps and hello to cold and snow in the future.
10/9/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No watches or warnings today, the first time for a long time! Clear blue skies and bright sunshine, hopefully for the rest of the day. Showers expected for Tues. night and into Wed. Can't believe that the Apple Fest week end has been beautiful, with no rain, gusting winds or extreme cold for a change. Too much work to do to go to the flea market, a huge one that covers the entire fair grounds in Gays Mills. Something for everybody if that is your thing. I go for the kettle korn and often run into old friends from my pharmacy tech days in Viroqua.
10/10/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another nice fall day in store with temps predicted to be into the 70's before rain again tonight and for the next couple of days. The AM temp was a cool 47 degrees. Still no killing frost here, although the growing season is definitely over for this year.
10/11/2016 7:00 AM 0.05 M M M M A little rain overnight and a warm, 67 degrees, morning for almost mid October. It is supposed to clear off today, rain tomorrow, and then turn cold for the rest of the week. We could expect snow in a couple of weeks! I can hardly wait!
10/12/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A heavily overcast day with a cooler temp of 53 degrees. Frost is predicted tonight with temps into the 20's for the first time this season. Tomorrow is supposed to stay very cool, but sunny. I guess we can't complain since there have been way above normal temps most of Sept and early Oct. I have a feeling this is going to be a very long and cold winter similar to 2012 or worse yet 2008. The snow did not melt until May!!
10/13/2016 7:00 AM 0.05 M M M M There was a thin layer of ice on the bird bath this AM although the temp was above freezing at 34 degrees. Not quite ready to face cold mornings and eventually some frost and then snow. I love the change of seasons, but I would like to be where it is warmer in the winter! Never gonna happen, though with 4 dogs and 3 cats and a spouse who would never leave the country even though we did live in the city for over 30 years. Chicago was the pits! Actually those two years went very quickly and we were still able to visit the country often.
10/14/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It remained a above freezing this AM with a temp of 37 degrees under an October blue sky. It is expected to rise into the upper 60's today and stay warm through the week end, of course some rain is in the mix as well. A good time to catch up on some outdoor work, and cut a little fire wood.
10/15/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another overcast morning with a warm temp of 59 degrees and what feel like a thick mist in the air. No rain overnight, but some predicted for today and into tomorrow. Temps are supposed to reach the 70's well into next week. Could this be what we used to call "Indian Summer" when I was growing up. Have not heard that term for a while; must not be politically correct now!! No insults to native Americans intended, I'm sure. Back in the day people were honored to have something named for them, now it is an insult or considered racists.
10/16/2016 7:00 AM 0.05 M M M M Today is overcast again with a hint of rain in the air. The AM temp was a warm 61 degrees expected to rise to the mid 70's by afternoon. Rain to arrive by evening. A good day for a walk in the woods if things dry off later.
10/17/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another overcast, very warm, and humid day with a temp of 70 degrees. Normals are in the 40's and 50's, even sometimes in the 30's. This has been a warm fall. I hope that it doesn't mean a late and cold spring. When I was a kid in grade school, spring used to come in March, now we're lucky it gets warm by late May!. It always snowed by Thanksgiving, now it may not snow until after Christmas.
10/18/2016 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M The first day in a long time that there have been no watches or warnings about the weather around here, just beautiful blue skies and bright October sunshine. It will be cooler, temp today was 56 degrees, with highs in the 60's that is normal for this time of year. This is supposed to be a beautiful weather week!
10/19/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M More typical temp today at 47 degrees under a mostly overcast sky. Frost expected tomorrow night and sunny skies into the week end.
10/20/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Pretty chilly this AM at 43 degrees under a mostly overcast sky. If skies do clear off tonight, a freeze warning is in effect. The plants around here are very much alive and showing no signs of frost bite, if that is the word. Tons of gords up in the garden to be harvested before a hard freeze. Most of them planted themselves from old seeds left in the plot from last season, same for the morning glories we can't seem to kill no matter what we do whether tilling, or even Roundup does not work! They manage to grow all over the fence, the gate, and anything else there they can climb like beans and corn! They are pretty, but quite the mess to remove from the fence and the gate. The deer are back now and an occasional rabbit is running around. Have not seen Mr Fox for a while, but the coyotes are howling for the first time in a couple of years.
10/21/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Looks like it is going to be a beautiful day! The half moon hung in the mostly darkened sky at 7 AM, but tomorrow when there is just a crescent will be the best! The starting temp was the coldest of the season at 33 degrees, although most of the plants survived. THe highs will no longer be in the 70's, but now in the mid 60's. Rain not expected until Tues. It is starting to dry out now since we have not had a significant amount of rain for at least a couple of weeks.
10/22/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A little warmer today at 42 degrees under a sunny sky. It should warm up a bit more if the sun stays out. Yesterday remained cloudy all morning, but did clear off in the PM, but never got very warm. We may make it to NOV without a hard freeze making some kind of record. Did a lot of outside work, and more to be done. We have mowed leaves at least 5 times, and more are down now! In fact, there is a maple tree in the yard that has not dropped a leaf yet! The oaks on the hillsides have just started to turn color and most of the maples are bare already. Not a pretty or colorful fall.
10/23/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It's going to be another beautiful fall day with bright sunshine in an October blue sky, although a bit windy. Rain expected to return on Tue and into Wed. It is getting a little dry here so some rain will be welcome. I always fear fires when it is dry and windy. No fun when you live in the middle of a woods with some pines and a lot of other trees; oaks, maples, walnuts, ash, aspen, butternut, etc.
10/24/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another clear sunny day with a temp of 46 degrees. Yesterday was beautiful except for the strong winds. Today looks to be the same. Some places had temps into the 70's, quite high for late October.
10/25/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is mostly overcast with a beautiful sunrise. Intense pink in between the dark clouds was gorgeous. It only lasted for a brief while, though. The AM temp was a cool 42 degrees and still no killing frost! Yesterday remained cool and very windy. I think we have seen the last of the 70 degree days until next May or so. Wish it could last all winter, although this has been a beautiful warm fall.
10/26/2016 7:00 AM 2.25 M M M M Today is quite a different story from the past few days. It is blustery, east wind, overcast and some rain falling at 7 AM. The temp was 43 degrees and not expected to rise out of the 50's today. The additional moisture is welcomed, but I hope there is no flooding again. We have had enough of that in this area to last a few years!
10/27/2016 7:00 AM 0.08 M M M M A light drizzle fell most of the day yesterday. Today is still overcast with a temp of 42 degrees. Tomorrow is supposed to warm up again, perhaps into the 70's again. That would be nice. I am not fond of cutting wood in the rain and cold. Since we think this will be a cold and long winter, we are conserving the LP for more severe cold and snow when cutting wood is impossible, and we just do like the wood heat even though it is more work than turning up the thermostat on the LP furnace.
10/28/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A damp, dreary and overcast day with a temp of 45 degrees with the promise of south winds and a temp near 70 by afternoon. After a week of cloudy days, the sunshine and warmth will be a welcome relief before the cold actually sets in for the next several months.
10/29/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Woke up to Spring this AM! The temp was a warm 54 degrees with a southerly breeze under an overcast sky. Today will be warm with showers expected later followed by a cold front then warmth for Monday, perhaps into the 70's. This could last all winter as far as I am concerned. We would save a lot in heating costs, road salt, and snow plowing.
10/30/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another dreary and overcast day with a temp of 50 degrees and expected to stay in the 50's all day. No rain predicted for today, but a small chance of showers for Halloween tomorrow. Since we have not had trick or treaters since the neighbor kids grew up and one family moved away. That is one thing I do miss about not living in the city! We give the left over candy to the Amish kids along with a large tub of ice cream which they rarely get. Think about how one would keep it without a freezer or any type of refrigeration. I remember growing up with just a tiny freezer compartment in the top of the frig, certainly not big enough for 1/2 gal of ice cream let alone a tub!
10/31/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Warm again today under overcast skies and perhaps some light rain later. The sun did finally come out yesterday PM and it became rather nice. When I think of the times there had been snow, 1998 for example, this weather is welcome!
11/1/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Thick fog in the valleys this AM then clearing and maybe a temp as high as 70 degrees. Plan on hanging out the sheets for one last time this season! I can remember one Christmas, in the 80's I think, when it was in the 70's for a couple of days. I heard my parents' stories from the 1930's when it was very hot and dry all summer, and all the young pine trees they planted died if they could not carry water to them. Global warming????
11/2/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yesterday was a beautiful one with temps as high as 71 degrees under a mostly sunny blue sky, although it was quite windy most of the day. Today is a different story with overcast skies and a temp of 52 degrees; there were a few rain drops on the deck but it appears that most of the showers have gone to the east and south of the state line into Illinois. Lots of paper work and bills to pay, so won't mind staying inside today.
11/3/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The sun is shining today with a temp of 42 degrees. Nice weather expected through the week end.
11/4/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M NO frost again here with a temp of 41 degrees and some fog in the valleys. Believe it or not, we have three Easter Lilies that are going to bloom if it does not freeze first. The other ones bloomed back in July. Go figure. I think these got planted later, after the old blooms were gone.
11/5/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another clear, sunny, unseasonably warm day at 44 degrees on the way to the 70's again. We may break a record for high temps this late in the season. I hope it doesn't freeze for another week so my lilies can bloom. Actually it is predicted to stay warm well into next week. Hope it remains this way all winter!
11/6/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We broke the temp record for this date of 71 degrees in LaCrosse set in 1924(global warming?). It was 72 in LaCrosse and 74 in Prairie du Chien. We may break it again today. My Easter Lilly is close to blooming if it does not freeze in a couple more days!
11/7/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A little cooler today at 41 degrees with bright sunshine in a clear blue sky. We did not break the temp record yesterday, but came close! A cold front is expected tonight with some showers, then a bit cooler the rest of the week, but well above normal temps for early November. I plan to hang out my sheets again today for probably the last time this season, but you never know for sure!!
11/8/2016 7:00 AM 0.05 M M M M It was raining at 11PM but did not produce much moisture. Today was warmer at 48 degrees under a bright sunny sky. The highs are predicted to reach only into the 50's, but there will be sunshine all week. A cold front may bring frost on Sat. for the first time this fall. Hope the lily blooms before then. There were several pack of coyotes howling at 10PM last PM, one so close my husband came back into the house for a flashlight to scare them away. Next time it will be for a gun, although with 4 dogs killing a coyote would be nearly impossible. Two of them love to chase anything that will run away!
11/9/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It did get down to 32 degrees overnight for the first time this season, but it doesn't look like all the plants were killed. The sun is shining in a clear blue sky, and the world did not come to an end because Hillery lost.
11/10/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Bright sunshine in a clear blue sky with a temp of 42 degrees. Looks like this will be the last of the warm temps until next spring as a cold front is expected tomorrow. I do hope the lily blooms before then, but I have my concerns. Some outside work to be done before the cold hits, like put the film on the patio doors and close off the Air Conditioners for the winter. We cut a lot of wood yesterday with will probably last for a day or two if it stays warm. Hoping we can hold off on using the LP until December.
11/11/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We still haven't had a killing frost here. There are some flowers that are blooming and the lily bud is getting bigger each day. The AM temp was a warm 44 degrees, but today's high is expected to get only into the 50's. The warmest day will be Sunday, otherwise a little cooler. Our deer are back after being absent most of the summer, except to lick the salt once in a while. It seems the yearling fawns have been abandoned by their mothers and are sort of at loose ends now wondering what to do. Some are very tiny, no spots, but about the size of a big dog. I worry that they will not survive the winter if we have severe cold and lots of snow. They seem to be quite tame and do not bolt when we confront them.
11/12/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It finally froze overnight! The AM temp was just 32 degrees, but the grass was white and all the plants were frost bitten and dead. I'm hoping the lily bud did not die, but it probably did! There is a red spike, new this year, that looks OK so am going to try to find a pot for it. The pots we have are either too big or too small, kind of like Goldy Locks. I have nice east and south facing windows that are great for indoor plants, so have a jungle in the living room! May splurge and buy new one when we go the the city tomorrow.
11/13/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is going to be a beautiful day starting out with a temp of 37 degrees and bright sunshine in a clear blue sky. This is supposed to be the warmest day we have had in the past few. Hope to accomplish the rest of the outside work before it snows, which could happen any day.
11/14/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It was mostly cloudy this AM with a warm temp of 43 degrees. Watched the huge moon rise in the east last PM and it was stunning. It did cloud over later, but was happy to have seen as much of it as I did. I won't be around for the next one!
11/15/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is still warm at 43 degrees under an overcast sky with some fog. It is expected to remain warm through Thurs and maybe Fri. then a storm with rain/snow for the week end. Can hardly wait! The lily bud has finally opened a little today. Another warm day and we will have an Easter Lily for Thanksgiving!
11/16/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A little cooler today at 36 degrees, but there is sunshine. One more warm day, then the cold sets in, probably for the season. Snow is predicted for the northern parts of Wisc. Alas, the lily is almost open. Must take a photo of the Thanksgiving lily today for it will most likely freeze on Friday.
11/18/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A very warm morning for November at 59 degrees under a very overcast sky. There are a few rain drops on the deck, but the bulk of the storms are north and moving in that direction. We are under a wind advisory from noon today through midnight with falling temps and gusts up to 45 MPH. It will be much colder then, and the weekend is expected to have temps in the 40's for highs and we could see a little snow. Not ready for winter yet, but there isn't much to be done to stop it.
11/19/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Winter is here, although it did not freeze overnight. The AM temp was 33.8 degrees under an overcast sky with gusty west winds which are predicted to last all day. A good day to stay inside, and certainly not a good day for football!
11/20/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The first real freeze of the season happened overnight with the AM temp at just 26 degrees. At least the strong winds have died down making it feel not quite as cold as yesterday. The lily has finally been killed and is lying on the ground in a pile of once green leaves and stem holding it up. Sorry to see the last of "summer", even tho it certainly is late in the year to have flowers blooming outside. The sun is trying to peek out from behind some clouds, so perhaps it will warm up a little later.
11/21/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A very cold start to the day at just 21 degrees, the coldest since last April. The next storm is expected on Wed. It is supposed to warm up into the 40's, so the precip will hopefully remain in the liquid form. Not ready for snow just yet; I hate putting the plow on the Ranger!!
11/22/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A tad warmer today at 32 degrees with a little wind. Rain predicted for this AM, but none so far. We are not supposed to get snow tonight and tomorrow. Trying to get used to the cold. So much work putting sweaters on 3 dogs, 4th does not like sweaters and has a very thick coat due to he life in the kennel outside for many years. I have at least 4 gauges and swap them out when necessary. We have it on a stand in the parking lot, and it has suffered many collisions over the years breaking parts when it lands on the blacktop driveway.
11/23/2016 7:00 AM 0.35 M M M M The first precip fell last PM in the form of rain. The temp was 38 degrees and is supposed to remain above freezing all day. The deer hunters won't be happy, but so far ours seemed to have survived. Only four more days of hunting remain in this gun season, but I can't keep up with all the new regulations.
11/24/2016 7:00 AM 0.15 M M M M A busy day today with a temp of 37 degrees under an overcast sky which remained all day.
11/25/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A another overcast day with a temp of 37 degrees. Snow showers expected this AM, but no accumulation.
11/26/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The skies are starting to clear and patches of blue are showing through between the clouds. The AM temp was a warm 31 degrees on the way to maybe the 50's. This is an amazing fall so far. Let's hope the winter follows suit, but I've heard we are in for a long, cold, and snowy one. Intend to buy a Farmers' Almanac, but keep forgetting to to do so. We are contemplating putting the plow on the Ranger today. Best to do it when it is warm and no snow then in a snow drift at -10 degrees!
11/27/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today dawned cold and clear with sunshine in a clear blue sky and a temp of 31 degrees. Rain and clouds expected to move in later today with rain expected tonight and into Monday. Temps are expected to remain warm, though, for at least a few more days. Yesterday was so nice with temps into the 50's and mostly sunny skies. This could last all winter, but I know it won't!
11/28/2016 7:00 AM 0.65 M M M M Spring was in the air this morning! With a temp of 44 degrees no snow on the ground, and green grass, one would think fast forward to early March! Too bad it isn't! Anyhow, it started to rain after 7 PM and must have continued off and on all night. The dogs were soaked when they came in from their 10:00 walk. Guess it was a good thing I left the inner tube in the rain gauge although I have several, some with pieces missing and chipped tops, but they still function if it doesn't rain too much! It is predicted to remain warm for another day or two, then maybe some snow mixed in with the rain. Time to put on the snow plow!
11/29/2016 7:00 AM 0.26 M M M M Another spring-like day with a temp of 37 degrees under a clearing sky. Temps will return to normal toward the end of the week. It did rain most of the day, but produced little water in the rain gauge. Time to take it in?? I prefer measuring snow on a snow board up off the ground.
11/30/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A degree cooler today under an overcast sky. Rain and snow mix expected later in the day. Hard to believe today is the last day in November and we have not had any snow on the ground yet. I'm sorry we may pay for it later in the winter! I think I heard on TV that we should have had 3" by this date.
12/1/2016 7:00 AM 0.11 M M M M Another, relatively speaking, warm day at 38 degrees under an overcast sky. The rain is supposed to leave this afternoon. Some sunshine would be nice, but it probably won't happen. We had the 2nd warmest November on record here and we did have some snow showers mixed in with the rain, but none stuck to the ground. Time to put the plow on the Ranger?
12/2/2016 7:00 AM 0.06 T M M M Woke up to a deck covered in white. Thought it was frost until I went outside and saw little piles of snow in the flower beds. Even though the temp was above freezing at 34 degrees, the snow still remains. This is really the first time this season we have had actual snow on the ground. Not too bad considering it is December 2nd.
12/3/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M All of the snow has melted but the temp never got above 35 degrees all day. Today is a carbon copy of the past few days with around freezing temps, 31 degrees this AM, and overcast skies. We cannot seem to get rid of the clouds. Snow is expected late tonight, perhaps up to 4" in some places of SW Wisconsin. We are ready for it since we got the plow on the Ranger yesterday. I wish we were taking it off instead, though!
12/4/2016 7:00 AM M 1.5 M M M The first measurable snowfall of the season happened overnight. It is of the wet and heavy variety, probably due to the temp being right at the freezing mark at 32 degrees. I did shovel the sidewalk even though it was still snowing at a brisk pace. We were predicted to get up to four inches, so it will no doubt last for a while. I think next week is supposed to be warmer, so it will be gone in a few days. I'll bet some kids are having a great time making snow men or snow balls to throw at anything that moves. At least, if it stays cold, the ski hills will have real snow, not just the stuff they make.
12/5/2016 7:00 AM M 2.5 M M M Another overcast day, but warm at 34 degrees. We have around 4" of new snow on the ground, the first of the year so far. Causing problems with the sat dish on the side of the house.
12/7/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No more snow for now, but more is expected on Sat. PM. The AM temp was a chilly 19 degrees with a strong and gusting wind making it feel like -10 degrees. Tomorrow is expected to be the same. At least the sky is mostly clear so there will be some sunshine. It remained sunny all day yesterday as the temp dropped and the wind picked up.
12/8/2016 7:00 AM M T M M M There were a few light, fluffy flakes of snow falling before 7AM this morning, but it did not last long or accumulate on surfaces. The AM temp was a chilly 17 degrees with a nasty wind blowing again. Next week is supposed to get into the deep freeze with sub zero temps. I heard some mention of a "polar vortex" again like we had two winters ago that was terrible with very cold temps that lasted much of the winter. I knew we would have to pay the price for the beautiful warm fall we had; just not quite ready to jump into winter yet.
12/9/2016 7:00 AM M T M M M A very light and fluffy snow was falling last evening with little accumulation. Today is a bit warmer at 20 degrees under a mostly cloudy sky with a few peeks of blue sky. The persistent wind seems to have died down for now. Not looking forward to next week when we go into the deep freeze for many days. Glad most of my activities were this week.
12/10/2016 7:00 AM M T M M M Some snow flurries off and on all evening, but not much on the ground. The big snow has been delayed until late afternoon, then all day on Sunday. As of last PM the highest amount expected was 10". It has been a couple of years since we had that much snow in one storm. We are as ready as we can be. Even brought in the Christmas tree that has been in a pail of water out in the spa room . I must be getting old, but I would just as soon skip the whole process, bake some cookies (already baked over 4 dozen for a bake sale), and sit by the fire and listen to DVDs of the Messiah or Manheim Steam Roller. Might even dig out the Nut Cracker.
12/11/2016 7:00 AM M 4.5 0.30 M M It started snowing in early afternoon and is still at it! The AM temp was 24 degrees with light snow falling under an overcast sky. I guess it is good that today is Sunday and people won't have to dig out to go to work. Next comes the extreme cold!. I certainly hope this year is not a repeat of 2014 with snow, cold, snow, etc. for what seemed like weeks.
12/12/2016 7:00 AM M M M M M Today will be the warmest(if you want to call +18 degrees warm) we will have for about a week. The cold air moves in tonight and by Friday the highs will only be in the lower single digits. I ask myself, "Why do I live in WI in winter?", but we love it here and would miss the change of seasons. I wouldn't mind a couple of months in the south, but what does one do with 7 mostly aging pets and a big house? I have to go out on both Tue. and Wed., so will be experiencing the cold first hand. The truck is at the bottom of the hill, so a ride in the Ranger down the hill is almost as fun as getting in a very cold truck. Since I have no way of measuring the snow that fell after 7:00 yesterday, I will leave that spot blank. It did snow, very lightly, all day, but I doubt if it amounted to an inch.
12/13/2016 7:00 AM M M M M M We saw the sun for the first time in what seemed like days. The temp this AM was 4 degrees, the warmest it will be for about four days. Thurs. is supposed to be the coldest with the high temp at just 1 degree. Snow is expected for Friday and Saturday. I don't like this pattern that seems to be emerging. Snow, cold, etc. for the rest of the winter.
12/14/2016 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M It became cloudy last PM so the temp did not drop as much as expected. The temp this AM was a toasty 14 degrees. More snow predicted for Fri. PM and Sat., up to 8" in some areas. We just got the last snow cleared off the driveway. There is supposed to be more wind causing drifting snow also with wind chills as low as -30 degrees. Sounds wonderful!! We have no plans to go out past today, so "let it snow". Maybe we will get the Christmas decorations finished; the tree is up already and we found some decorations from the 70's when they were actually glass!
12/15/2016 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M The polar vortex has definitely struck this area today. The AM temp was a cold -2 degrees with wind chills -15 to -20 degrees. Do not plan on going anywhere today or until it warms up a bit. That could be next Tues since snow is predicted for tomorrow, possibly 8", and the severe cold will return on Monday. How great is it to live in Wisconsin in winter??
12/16/2016 7:00 AM M 0.5 M M M A dusting of new light and fluffy snow overnight with more on the way this PM and tomorrow. The temp was a warmer 12 degrees. After the snow we are supposed to go back into the deep freeze again on Monday, perhaps colder than this period. Can hardly wait. So happy I do not have to do any more shopping.
12/17/2016 7:00 AM M 3.5 0.40 M M The AM temp was warmer at 15 degrees with a little snow falling from an overcast sky. It began to snow around 11 AM and continued off and on most of the day and night, sometimes very heavy. There was some blowing snow as well. Tomorrow we go into the deep freeze with wind chills as low as -40 degrees. Have no plans to go out!
12/18/2016 7:00 AM M M M M M The snow finally stopped around noon, then it started to get colder. The AM temp was a -6 degrees, really not as cold as I expected, but the wind from the NW made it feel much colder. Have absolutely no plans to emerge from my warm house. I feel for poor Aaron Rodgers having to play at Soldier Field under these conditions. Of course, he does get paid well!! I remember watching Bart Starr play in Green Bay in what has become known as the "Ice Bowl" back in the 60's.
12/19/2016 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M A bright sunny day, but very cold at -3 degrees. It is supposed to warm up to at least 20 today and the rest of the week looks to have seasonal temps, perhaps above freezing. Some snow expected on Wed.
12/20/2016 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M No watches or warnings for a change this AM and temps are supposed to be normal for the next few days. A little snow expected tomorrow, and maybe a storm over the Christmas weekend. Today's temp was a toasty 26 degrees, the warmest in has been for quite some time.
12/21/2016 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M A welcome warm day at 29 degrees on the way to maybe 37 degrees. It did get above freezing yesterday, but did not melt much of the snow. Some snow/rain expected later north of here, and a big storm predicted again for Sunday. It could end up being mostly rain. All of this could ruin the ski season again like it has done for the past few years. We get beautiful snow, than it gets warm and then rains!
12/22/2016 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Another warm morning at 27 degrees under a mostly sunny sky. Yesterday remained cloudy with temps above freezing most of the afternoon.
12/23/2016 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Warm again today with a temp of just freezing this AM. It is great to be able to get outside without freezing. The dogs even came on a walk down the driveway in the afternoon and were out and about this AM. They get cabin fever just like people. The sky is heavily overcast and perhaps it could rain or snow. We don't have to go out for a few days, so bring it on!
12/25/2016 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Another warmer morning at 33 degrees with no precip yet. Rain and freezing rain is expected followed by perhaps thunder storms and rain later today. A cold front with high winds and freezing temps to follow. The warmth was nice while it lasted!
12/26/2016 7:00 AM 0.58 0.0 M M M Walked out the door expecting it to be cold. Instead the bird was singing and it almost felt like spring! The AM temp was a balmy 38 degrees, but it is not expected to last. A strong wind along with colder temps expected later today. It was nice while it lasted though. Much of the snow pack melted with the rain that came down heavily for quite some time.
12/27/2016 7:00 AM M M M M M A cooler day at 23 degrees under an overcast sky and a hint of snow in the air. It is supposed to warm up again for tomorrow, then snow showers expected on Thursday. NWS says this was the wettest year on record for the La Crosse area with 44.76" of rain. Good for the crops, but now the prices are very low. The poor farmers can't win!
12/28/2016 7:00 AM M T M M M The morning temp was 26 degrees under a partly overcast sky. Hopefully the sun will shine and it will warm up into the 30's as promised. No watches or warning out for today, but snow showers expected tomorrow. Our road is ice covered and very slippery, so a little sunshine and warm temps would be nice. Spreading salt is no fun, plus we try to use as little as possible. The deer love it even though we do have a block of salt out at all times.
12/29/2016 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Another gloomy, windy, and overcast day with a temp of 29 degrees. Snow showers predicted for today with gusty winds. Going to get colder again next week. This reprieve from the bitter cold has been very nice!
12/30/2016 7:00 AM M T M M M More seasonable temp today at 20 degrees under a mostly sunny sky. Very high winds late yesterday PM making getting around on the ice (our hilly driveway is a skating rink, even the ranger without chains, had trouble getting up and down the hill, scary!!). The next two days are expected to be dry and seasonable, then a storm may move in, but NWS does not know what or when. If it warms up above 32 degrees, the salt may melt some of the ice. We had snow showers for a couple of hours yesterday AM, but it melted on the paved roadway later in the day. We drove over to Prairie by the big river, and there was no snow there.
12/31/2016 7:00 AM M M M M M A rather gloomy, windy and warmer day with a temp of 31 degrees. No watches or warnings in this area for today or tomorrow. Rain and or snow is coming Sunday night and Monday. We are just getting the dreadful ice off the driveway, so I guess it is time for more although the temps are supposed to remain at or above freezing.
1/1/2017 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M The coldest day for a while at 29 degrees with sunshine for a change. It is supposed to get cloudy later today and freezing rain for Monday AM. NWS had a list of the 10 most significant weather events around here last year. Quite interesting with everything from small tornadoes to a very late May freeze and much river flooding.
1/2/2017 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M A wintry mix is expected today starting with drizzle and may end up as light snow. The AM temp was a warm 31 degrees, but by Wed. the wind chills will be in the deep freeze again. It would be nice if it warmed up enough to melt some of the ice on the road. We are still slip sliding down the driveway in spite of several bags of salt (which the deer love!).Hope we do not get more rain and then cold to make matters worse.
1/3/2017 7:00 AM 0.27 M M M M There was light drizzle most of the afternoon producing a little moisture in the gauge. The AM temp was still above freezing at 34 degrees under a heavily overcast sky. Temps expected to drop today which will make this slushy, icy mess very slippery. Some patches are already slick and the dogs had a terrible time walking on the path which is shoveled over bare ground with snow run off producing icy patches along the entire distance. The paved parking lot is already very slippery where the ground is below freezing or the salt has melted the snow and produced run off that has frozen.
1/4/2017 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M A bright, cold, and sunny morning with a temp of just +5 degrees and a wind chill value of -10 to -25 degrees. It is not expected to warm up until past the week end. Then I suppose we will have more snow.
1/5/2017 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M There are patches of blue sky showing through the clouds, but the temp is a frigid 6 degrees with a wind chill of below zero. This will be the story for the next three days before we warm up a little. We were out yesterday and did a 180 before the first turn of the driveway on glare ice. The blade on the Ranger saved us from possible disaster. Even the salt we put down does not help much in these cold temps. The entire driveway (1/4 mile, downhill) is a skating rink, especially the level part where the water pooled from the rain and melting snow. Chains would help, but they chew up the asphalt so we try to avoid using them whenever possible. Sometimes you can't win!!
1/6/2017 7:00 AM M M M M M Today was the coldest so far at -3 degrees, but the wind chill was much lower. The sun is shining in a clear blue sky, but doesn't help much. They are talking snow again for Monday, and a slight warm up to normal temps. I guess the ice is not going to melt any time soon!
1/7/2017 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M A clear sunny morning with a temp of -2 degrees on the way to 10 above. The cold is supposed to break after tomorrow morning, then some snow/sleet/rain expected for Monday and into Tuesday. We can't seem to get a break from winter.
1/8/2017 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M The temps have not improved, in fact today was the coldest so far at -3.8 degrees under a bright sunny sky. Snow expected tonight, not a lot here, and into Tuesday. The temps will warm up, and there could be some rain also. All we need around here is more ice!!
1/9/2017 7:00 AM M T M M M Today was the warmest it has been for about a week at 19 degrees under an overcast sky. There was a dusting of snow overnight, but not enough to measure, just cover up the ice. More precip is expected late today and into tomorrow; a mixture of rain, freezing rain and snow. They say there could be 1/10th inch of ice. Glad we have emergency power here!
1/10/2017 7:00 AM M M M M M Warm this AM at 35 degrees with a light rain falling. Some snow yesterday PM, but melted with the rain today. Ice, rain and later snow expected this PM. If this freezes, as they say it will, this will become a real mess!
1/11/2017 7:00 AM 0.49 0.0 M M M It rained most of the morning, then turned to light snow with very little accumulation. The AM temp was 20 degrees under an overcast sky with the threat of more snow and later rain if it warms up into the 30's. Everything around here is covered with a thick coating of ice making walking very difficult, and forget driving down an ice covered hill. The forecast is for turning sunny, but the cold will arrive by tomorrow.
1/13/2017 7:00 AM M 0.1 M M M Colder again today with a temp of 7 degrees under an overcast sky. The snow showers stopped around 9 AM after little accumulation, then later the sun appeared. This was a blessing because the heavier wet snow covered up the ice making getting around much easier. More rain/snow expected for Mon. and Tues., but how much is still to be determined. It sounds like this is going to be another big storm. We may be isolated for the rest of the winter. We bought another load of fire wood, not a huge one, but enough for a few days' burning. The propane tank is only 1/2 full and this was a warm fall! No chance of filling it any time soon.
1/14/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A warmer day at 19 degrees under a clearing sky. Nothing in the way of precip until late tomorrow into Monday and perhaps Tuesday as well. All we need is more freezing rain and icing! We are just able to get around without slipping on ice that is everywhere. The crust on the snow is so hard that the dogs walk on it without breaking through and even I can walk on top of the snow crust. Since our back up power source is not running at the present time, a lot of ice on the power lines would not be a good thing. I remember a terrible spring ice storm when people around here were without power for the better part of a week. My parents, who lived in the country, were heating the house with a very inefficient fire place and had no water.
1/15/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The sun is shining in a clear blue sky with a temp of 10 degrees. A rain/sleet/snow mixture is expected to arrive tomorrow and into Tuesday. It is supposed to warm up toward the end of next week, hopefully melting the ice that is going to come tomorrow. Since our emergency generator is down, let's hope there is not enough icing to take out the power! I find it ironic that the Generac runs perfectly all summer, then when needed, it won't start. Go figure!!
1/16/2017 7:00 AM M M M M M There is a glazing of ice on everything today and there is a light rain falling. Since the temp is below freezing at 29 degrees, it is going to freeze on everything. Could not remove the rain gauge from its holder and everywhere else has a coating of ice. Do not plan to go out today! There are advisories out for the entire region from Iowa to eastern Wisc. Snow is expected north of I-90. More is predicted for later this PM and into tomorrow.
1/17/2017 7:00 AM M M M M M Above freezing this AM, but the ice on the ground was still very hard and slippery. A light rain fell much of the morning, then it became heavier for a time, then after noon it started to snow and is continuing now at 4:20 PM. I measured 0.55" of rain that fell from 7AM yesterday to 3PM today. Was not able to get to the gauge any earlier due to a coating of very slippery ice. The snow has now coated it and with the temps warming to 36 degrees for a while I was able to walk out on the parking lot and retrieve the gauge. The snow is now falling in big clumps, but that changes also.
1/18/2017 7:00 AM M 0.2 M M M I was able to get up into the parking lot to access the snow board. The best I could do is measure the snow on top of a layer of ice on it. Today is overcast, but does not look like it will snow or rain, at least until tomorrow night according to the forecast The next three days are suppose to be warm, perhaps into the 40's. That will be nice and maybe melt most of the ice covering the roads and walkways. It was nice being able to actually walk on the sidewalk without fear of slipping and falling. The poor dogs were slipping and falling for two days, an unfamiliar experience for them to end up on their back sides.
1/19/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain or snow yesterday for a change. Today the temp was a mild 34 degrees under an overcast sky. Still plenty of ice around here, and today we have dense fog covering most of the area. Husband went to Madison yesterday and said the CO roads were still ice covered in many places and very slippery. Some sunshine would be nice, but it doesn't appear that there will be any for the next few days. More rain on tap through the week end.
1/20/2017 7:00 AM 0.13 0.0 M M M A warmer morning with a temp of 36 degrees. Enough of the snow has melted off the ice making getting around almost impossible because the ice is so slippery. If only the sun would shine and warm things up a little. Temps expected to reach almost 50 by tomorrow, but without sunshine I have my doubts that the ice will melt. Today is overcast with some fog again.
1/21/2017 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M Dense fog again today with a temp of 37 degrees. Temp stayed the same all day and night. Some of the ice did melt, but without any sunshine the melting is quite slow. Getting around is still very difficult. We drove to Viroqua early this AM for cat food and gas and traveled both ways through dense fog, especially on the hill tops. I do wish people would use headlights though. Very dangerous when you cannot see a vehicle coming out of the fog. There is still quite a lot of snow on the ground in places, but most has disappeared from the southern slopes. Wish we had paid attention to that when we bought this place in the early 70's.
1/22/2017 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M M M Dense fog with mild temps again today. The AM temp was 37 degrees with a 5mph southerly wind that will turn northerly later. Snow is expected to return on Wed with colder temps. The sun could shine a bit tomorrow. It would be great to see some sunshine and melt the remaining ice before we get more snow. People around here agree this is one of the worst spells of winter weather we have seen in a while. Trying to get around on the ice is very difficult, especially when you live on a hill or are an older person. There have been many traffic accidents and falls reported due to the ice.
1/23/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.8 0.35 No rain or snow yesterday. The snow on the ground is disappearing quite rapidly since the temps have stayed above freezing overnight. Today's temp was 36 degrees under an overcast sky, again. Snow is predicted starting Tues. afternoon and into Wed. morning. They are not quite sure where it will track, but we could get as much as 7" of snow. The snow on the ground is very spotty; a lot in places and areas of bare ground. The snow is corn snow with a very high water content on top of a layer of ice on the ground. I measure water equiv. by weighing.
1/24/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is a bit colder at 34 degrees under an overcast sky. A winter storm is predicted to arrive late this PM and last until Wed. morning dumping perhaps as much as 9" of heavy wet snow. We could get more rain and even thunder before it gets cold enough to snow. I can hardly wait! The bulk of the ice has finally melted off of the road and it is possible to walk around here without the fear of slipping. It seems we are about to repeat the process tonight.
1/25/2017 7:00 AM M 4.5 0.45 M M Woke up to a winter wonderland. Although the snow clinging to everything was beautiful, it did break off many tree branches due to the weight. This was probably one of the wettest snows I have seen. We are marooned up here on the hill because it is almost impossible to plow this type of snow. The temp is still above freezing at 34 degrees.
1/26/2017 7:00 AM M 0.6 M M M It snowed all morning, then stopped for a few hours, then started up again around 4PM. There was some rain mixed in during the afternoon making the snow total much lower than I expected. Today is below freezing at 30 degrees with a few snow flurries and is expected to stay there through the week end as well. More snow to come on Monday.
1/27/2017 7:00 AM M T M M M Another overcast day with a temp of 25 degrees and a few snow flakes falling. We are to expect this type of weather through the week end, then more snow on Monday. I can't remember such a gloomy stretch of weather in January with no sunshine for over two weeks! Usually there are a few bright, sunny days. I guess we did have a "January Thaw" the past week with temps into the 30's that melted the awful ice here.
1/28/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M More of the same today with an overcast sky and a temp of 24 degrees. The sun did come out for a brief time yesterday, but quickly retreated. There were a few flurries and a nasty wind. Things are starting to get icy as the snow is packed down and the remaining ice is exposed. More snow scheduled to arrive late on Monday otherwise more of the same through Sunday.
1/29/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast today with a temp of 24 degrees with a flake or two of snow in the air. More snow expected tomorrow and into Mon. evening. We are supposed to get only an inch or so, but things could change before then. A bit of sunshine would be nice!
1/30/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The sun came out yesterday afternoon and is still shining today. The clearing made the AM temp bit colder at 16 degrees at 9AM. The sky is starting to become overcast and there will snow starting to fall shortly and only last a short while. We are supposed to get about 1" while those north will get 2"-5". Will try to measure the snow on the ground with water content later today.
1/31/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
2/1/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The AM temp was 32 degrees at 7:00 under a partly cloudy sky.
2/2/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The sun is shining in a clear blue sky. The temp was a chilly 12 degrees. Guess we have to pick between cold and sunshine or warmer and rain or snow.
2/3/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A bright sunny day with a temp of just 10 degrees. A warm up for tomorrow, and of course some snow. A larger storm is predicted for later next week with more snow. Actually, we are behind the norm in snow fall so far this winter. If all that rain we got had been snow we would have had a lot more! Frankly I would prefer the snow. At least it can be removed from the road and is easier to drive and walk on than ice.
2/4/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A little warmer today at 14 degrees but we lost the sunshine of the past couple of days. Snow north of here today, and another storm for early next week with rain and snow again. We can't seem to escape this weather pattern that seems to persist with cold, snow, cold and more snow or rain.
2/5/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Much warmer today at 30 degrees at 9:00 under a cloudy sky again. The precip, mostly rain for us, is expected Monday night turning to snow by Tuesday. I hope we don't get rain and freezing rain again. Dealing with the icy conditions is almost too much! They still aren't sure just where the storm will track, so maybe we will luck out and get only snow!
2/6/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 4.5 1.00 A bright sunny day with a temp of 23 degrees. Fog tonight and rain expected tomorrow along with gusty winds. Icing is possible if the temp drops. Not good when your emergency power source is not working! SREC is wonderful about keeping the lights on, but a major failure could be a problem. Wind and icing is not a good formula for power lines.
2/7/2017 7:00 AM T M M M M There is a light drizzle falling along with some fog, but with temps above freezing (34 degrees today), there is no icing. When the cold temps arrive later then things could change for the worse. Yesterday the crust on top of the snow held the weight of a 200+ man, and I could walk on it without breaking through. In fact it was difficult getting around because it was like walking on solid ice! We went out to cut some firewood for kindling along the road up to the field, and just staying upright was difficult. Long dead cedar trees make wonderful fire starting material.
2/8/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Colder today at 21 degrees under an overcast sky. It became very windy later yesterday and with the temps dropping made for a miserable day. The predicted rain and snow did not arrive.
2/9/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We received little rain or snow the past couple of days, and today is bright and sunny but very cold at 10 degrees. By tomorrow it is supposed to be close to 50 where it will remain through Sunday. Of course more snow or rain is supposed to return! Our snow fall totals remain below the usual amount for the winter.
2/10/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A little warmer today at 20 degrees on the way to the mid 40's on a southerly breeze. It will be good to melt some of the ice, especially that on the road. It is beginning to feel a little like spring is on the way. I have not heard the cardinals yet, but we do have a huge flock of turkeys roosting in the trees here. They drive one of the dogs crazy because he cannot figure out where they are so he can chase them. They are smart enough to stay up off the ground in the trees. I did see an owl a couple of weeks ago and we do have a predator hawk around here that is keeping the song birds away from the feeders. More rain or snow expected tomorrow and Sunday.
2/11/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It did not freeze overnight and the AM temp was 36 degrees. It is supposed to stay mild at least through Sunday. Some rain or snow predicted for this PM and tomorrow. Hope to get out into the woods for some firewood today, but there is still a lot of snow out there. Yesterday was mild, but it didn't seem like the snow and ice were melting. The crust on the snow was so slippery that I could not walk up the hill to the field without slipping backward. I finally gave up and came back into the house.
2/12/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The only watch today was for high, gusting NW winds maybe up to 40mph. The AM temp was a toasty 37 degrees and the snow is fast disappearing. Can't be too soon if you ask me!! At least yesterday we could walk on top of the snow and the ice covered paths were almost all clear. May go for a short walk today, although the wind is not very pleasant!
2/13/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Much colder today at 25 degrees with sunshine in a clear blue sky. The wind yesterday was horrific, but the temps were warm enough to melt a lot of snow. Today it is frozen again making getting around here very difficult. At least today is not windy and the temp is expected to get into the high 40's. This weekend expected to reach into the 50's. While I do wish for an early spring. things did not work out well in 2012 when it got warm in March and remained that way throughout the summer. When I was a kid back in the 40's I can remember always getting out my spring clothes by St Patrick's day. Now you would freeze doing so. I also remember wearing my winter coat in June the year we moved to Milwaukee, 1965. Of course we were feeling the effects of Lake Michigan, which as a westerner, I never got used to freezing most of the summer when the wind was in the NW.
2/14/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another sunny warm day with a temp of 31 degrees and a NW wind blowing. Today will be colder than yesterday, then it is supposed to warm up, perhaps to 60 by Monday. The normal high temp for this area in Feb. is 30 degrees. I fear we will get spoiled and then the reality that it is still winter will hit with a vengeance. I have a feeling March will be the converse of February with snow and cold. Hope I am wrong!
2/15/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Much more seasonable temps today at 25 degrees with the high only into the low 30's. The rest of the week and into next will be 20 or so degrees above normal. The high on Monday may reach 60 degrees with rain. This certainly makes the heating fuels last longer.
2/16/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another bright and sunny day with a temp of 29 degrees on the way to perhaps 50. The 60's may be possible for tomorrow and into next week. Hope it melts the remaining ice on the road. Still plenty of snow on the north facing slopes and in the shaded woods. Rain is predicted for Monday, perhaps a lot of rain!
2/17/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another sunny warm day with a temp of 30 degrees on the way to perhaps 50 today. Tomorrow is supposed to reach 60 and remain there for a couple of days.
2/18/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today was the warmest yet at 40 degrees at 7 AM on the way to 60 or maybe warmer. Yesterday did reach into the 60's in many places around here. There is still quite a lot of snow on the ground in the shady places, but a lot of the ice on the road did melt. I have hopes it will all go by tomorrow, then rain is expected with thunderstorms on Mon. night. Just hope it does not turn cold and freeze again! March can be a very cold and snowy month in WI.
2/19/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It did freeze overnight since the AM temp. was 31 degrees on the way to the 60's again. Rain coming tomorrow but the rest of the week is supposed to stay in the 60's except for Friday when a winter storm is expected with snow. Back to reality!! Most of the ice is gone and the snow remains only in the shady places and the north facing slopes.
2/20/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The day started out mild at 47 degrees with a southerly wind blowing. Today is mostly overcast with the threat of rain. Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny and perhaps as warm as 67 degrees. Wed will be the last of the mild Feb. weather then storms move in Thursday night and Friday with the threat of rain and snow perhaps measurable amounts. As for the snow remaining on the ground here, about the only snow remaining is where it was plowed along the road, some in the ditches and in shady spots. Very difficult to determine exactly how much and how much water is in it. The one stretch of road, low lying and in the shade still has a thick layer of ice on it. The remainder of the road is bare except where the snow was plowed along the sides of the road.
2/21/2017 7:00 AM 0.54 0.0 M M M Woke up to thick fog and a temp of 36 degrees on the way to the 60's again. Spring in Feb. will end on Friday when we return to reality that it is still winter with a snow storm on Thurs night. Yesterday it started to rain around 2PM and continued until after dark. Sometimes it rained quite hard. Thankfully it came down as liquid, not snow, or there would have been many inches!. The snow has all but disappeared now except for the piles that were man made.
2/22/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today will be the last of "Spring" weather for a while. Highs are expected to reach 70 degrees this PM. The morning temp was a toasty 43 degrees, well above the normal high for Feb. At least we got the propane truck up here with 300 gal of gas which should last until the real spring arrives. Since we are nearly out of firewood, that is a good thing! With an ailing spouse, I don't do well with a chain saw.
2/23/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A cooler and overcast morning with a temp of 41 degrees which is still above the normal high for Feb.23rd. Rain expected tonight here with snow up north, perhaps a foot by tomorrow night. We could get up to 3 inches of snow tomorrow. If it remains warm as predicted, it should melt quite quickly. One can hope. It is good to be able to get around without ice and snow on the paths and roads. Still some isolated patches of snow/ice along the road.
2/24/2017 7:00 AM 0.81 M M M M We had a little bit of everything from rain, hail, snow and sleet and even two rather severe thunder storms with bright lightning and loud thunder. It was still raining a bit at 7AM. The snow on the ground was a mixture of ice on the bottom and a slushy mix on top. The AM temp was 31 degrees, just warm enough that the mess on the ground was not frozen solid yet. I'm sure as the temps drop, that will happen making getting around almost impossible!!
2/25/2017 7:00 AM M 0.8 M M M Very difficult to find a place to measure snow today due to the thick ice from yesterday. I had a very hard time scraping some of the ice/snow off the snow board. It was so hard it could not be scraped off easily. I did measure the snow on a portion of the sidewalk that was shoveled with great difficulty yesterday therefore the amount of snow may not be very accurate. Today is cold at just 19 degrees, but the sun is shining in a mostly clear sky.
2/26/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain or snow to report! The Am temp was warmer at 27 degrees on the way to the low 40's which is normal for Feb. The rest of the week looks to be normal as well with perhaps some snow showers up north. It would be nice to melt the thick layer of ice that is now covered in snow. I have been feeding the wild animals since it is difficult for them to find food under these conditions.
2/27/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A bright sunny morning with a colder temp of 24 degrees on the way to the high 40's. Yesterday was warmer than normal, but the thick ice layer did not seem to melt very much. Hopefully today is expected to get warmer and more will disappear. It won't matter much since we are stranded here without a vehicle until the flat time is replaced. This has not been a good stretch here with the Generac that won't start, the TV died before the Super Bowl, the internet was down for three days, and husband has been ailing for two weeks. What next?? Freezing rain perhaps tonight.
2/28/2017 7:00 AM 0.12 0.0 M M M A very warm day at 41 degrees on the way to near 60 this PM. It was not raining at 7AM, but an hour later it was raining pretty hard. Some of the snow/ice did melt yesterday, although there is a long way to go before the road is bare again. A cold front is coming and with it more snow, perhaps up to 3" tomorrow with temps in the 30's again, normal for early March here. This has been a most unusual year with such warm temps this early. I have tulip shoots up, and the iris that are up are being eaten by the hungry deer that have destroyed all of the small cedar and spruce trees.
3/1/2017 7:00 AM 0.70 T M M M Woke up to a light snow falling that has gradually increased over the past hour. The AM temp was above freezing at 34 degrees, but the snow is sticking to the ground now. Went up to Viroqua yesterday PM in some very thick fog. At times it was impossible to see anything. So many idiots driving without lights on, even when we returned past 5 PM when it was starting to get dark! No wonder there has been in increase in traffic accidents!!
3/2/2017 7:00 AM M 0.8 M M M A much colder day at 24 degrees, but at least there is sunshine in a clear blue sky. Once again there is snow on the ground with ice underneath. It snowed all morning but the amount measured is not representative of the amount due to the fact that the temp was above freezing and much of it melted, plus the wind was strong so it blew around. Actually it was beautiful with the thick wet snow clinging to all of the trees. Not nice when it blew in your face and down the back of your jacket. One dog, a very old one, did not like it one bit and refused to do her business.
3/3/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A beautiful cold day with a temp of 14 degrees and bright sunshine. Snow expected tonight as things warm up, perhaps into the 60's by early next week. I hope it melts the rest of the snow and ice. It is so great to be able to drive the truck up to the house. We also need to cut more fire wood soon. The deer and birds seem to be hungry since their food is buried under the snow and ice, and it has been cold overnight requiring more energy to stay warm.
3/4/2017 7:00 AM M 0.7 M M M It was snowing at 10PM, huge fluffy flakes coming down. I expected to see at least 6" this morning instead of a scant 0.7 inch. This was not your typical early March spring snow either, but a light and fluffy one. The AM temp was warmer at 27 degrees on the way to perhaps the 40's. By Monday we will have thunder storms and temps into the 60's again. Such weird weather!! The remainder of the week is supposed to stay much above the norms for March. Just hoping the snow will melt so we can use our driveway again!
3/5/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Warmer today at 35 degrees under a mostly overcast sky. Today is supposed to warm up to 59 degrees, and the rest of the week will also be very warm for early March. So many of the plants are up already, but I know they are hardened so will not freeze. Showers are predicted for tomorrow as well as very strong winds. The low temps will be higher than the normal highs.
3/6/2017 7:00 AM M M M T M Did not have the gauge out last PM. There was some rain overnight, but it doesn't appear that there was very much. The AM temp was a toasty 38 degrees with wind again. We are in for a rough patch of weather when a cold front comes in after 5PM. They are predicting winds as high as 55 mph with rain, hail, and thunder storms until 11 PM tonight. Later in the week there could be a snow storm with accumulations of several inches up north. I knew it was too soon to put the high winter boots away! I did hear several robins this AM, but have yet to see or hear a blue bird. They stayed very late last fall, so perhaps they are still tired out from their trip to wherever they go! I have not cleaned out their houses because there was snow up there as later as Saturday. Only a few scattered patches of snow and ice remaining, again where it was plowed or shoveled.
3/7/2017 7:00 AM 0.41 0.0 M M M A very strong thunder storm passed by here at 10:00 with high winds, much lightning and thunder, and torrents of rain. While it passed quickly, the rain came down in sheets and with the wind was pretty scary. We lost power for about 3/4 hour; thankful for the little LED lanterns we bought for just such an occasion since our back up power source is down until Generac can figure out what part it needs. Go figure, the one time we really needed it..... very dark and stormy, it won't start! Today is cooler at 36 degrees under a clearing sky. More rain and storms could be in store for later today, but we are under a wind advisory. More power outages are possible. Who would have thought in winter we would have a severe thunderstorm with power outages??
3/8/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another sunny day with a high wind warning for gusts up to 55 mph. The AM temp was a mild 36 degrees. Almost all of the snow has finally disappeared except for that on the south side of the field where the sun never shines. No signs of blue birds yet, but I do hear robins around the house but have not seen any. Seems strange since the blue birds always appear first.
3/9/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The sunshine has been replaced with an overcast sky and colder temps. The AM temp was just below the freezing mark at 31 degrees. At least the awful wind is gone making it much more pleasant to be outside. I have never driven under such poor conditions as I did yesterday! When I got on HWY 61N I thought there was something wrong with the steering on the truck until I realized it was the wind blowing across the road making it almost impossible to keep the vehicle on the road. I chose to return by another route to avoid the straight N/S stretches where the wind could blow across the open fields. The national weather map on TV showed snow showers here, but that did not happen, at least yet. We could get some later today.
3/10/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Winter has returned to Wisconsin. The AM temp was a cool 20 degrees with some wind making it feel colder even tho the sun is shining in a clear blue sky. The temps for the next few days are not expected to rise above freezing and more snow is to arrive on Monday with perhaps several inches. I was hoping we were done with that, but I knew, after all, this is Wisconsin and it can snow in June! The year we moved to Milwaukee, 1965, I remember wearing a winter coat in June. Of course, with the lake, one can freeze in the summer when the wind comes off that big, cold, body of water.
3/11/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We are under a winter storm watch to begin on Sunday afternoon. We are in the 6"-8" band which could change depending on the track of the storm. Today was cold, 16 degrees, with a nasty north wind again. Winter has definitely reared its ugly head. Just when it was so nice to be able to drive the truck up to the house. At least we have plenty of LP and have been out in the woods cutting fire wood. Yesterday we got another "bucket" of emergency food that is supposed to keep 25 years, and the part for the Generac is on order. Things are looking up!
3/12/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Did not enjoy getting up in the dark this AM, especially when the 13 degree temp hit me when I took out the dogs. The sky was clear then, but now some clouds have rolled in. Patiently waiting for the 9" of snow that is to arrive after 4 PM today. We did cut down a tree yesterday and hauled the pieces in the house, so at least we will be cozy and warm. Thankful I have no place to be tomorrow since driving is supposed to be bad. Back to taking the Ranger up and down the hill until the snow melts. The ground is cold so I don't think it will melt very fast!
3/13/2017 7:00 AM M 3.9 0.40 M M It started to snow around 5 PM and continued through the night, but did not produce the 9" or so predicted. Not a bad thing. This was not the usual heavy wet spring snow we usually get either, but rather a fairly light and fluffy variety. The AM temp was 22 degrees and it was still snowing. Additional amount of <1" is expected for the remainder of the day.
3/14/2017 7:00 AM M 0.4 M M M It stopped snowing shortly after 8 AM yesterday, but the temp never rose above the freezing mark even tho it appeared that there was some thawing. Actually the road, where there is black top, is bare now after it was plowed in later afternoon. Today is bright and sunny, but quite cold at just 12 degrees. I feel for the poor robin I saw before the snow that is going to have a hard time finding worms under 4" of new snow. I'm sure it won't last long as the temps are expected to be around 50 degrees by Saturday. More rain/snow mix predicted for Thurs. night.
3/15/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No watches or warnings today. It is cold, at just 13 degrees, but the sun is shining in a clear blue sky. It is expected to warm up tomorrow into the 40s and perhaps as high as 50 on Sunday. Rain is predicted for Thurs into Friday here, and rain/snow mix north of I94. We are definitely paying the price for our nice February. Spring is always a tease with a warm day and then back to winter. With 4" of snow on the ground it is not going to get very warm until that melts.
3/16/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M For the third day in a row the AM temp was a chilly 13 degrees. A warm front is expected today with warmer temps for the next few days, hopefully for the rest of March! Today is bright and sunny. The snow is melting in spite of the cold temps since the sun is higher and the days longer. Hopefully it will be gone by next week so I can do some yard work. All the windy days have taken a toll on the pines, and the other trees too. Branches down all over!
3/17/2017 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Much warmer today at 36 degrees. It was raining at 10PM but since I did not empty the snow out of the cone, it melted overnight with the warm temps, so my measurement is incorrect! My BAD!! It had 0.14" of water in the small tube this AM. I have not idea how long it rained, just that there was water in the bottom of the deer pan, and the sidewalks were wet. It is supposed to warm up, maybe to the 60's by Sunday. That will be a welcome relief from the 10 days or so of winter. We actually did drive up to the house yesterday. I hope that is the last of the snow, but knowing Wisconsin, it won't be!
3/18/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It did not freeze overnight so as a result much of the snow has disappeared. The AM temp was 35 degrees on the way to the low to mid 40s. The next two days should be warmer into the mid 50's before rain and cooler temps return. We are still harvesting wood, I think just to prove we still can, but do enjoy being out in the woods. Got stuck with the Ranger trying to navigate a small hill up to the field. The frost is coming out of the ground and it is worse than ice. Of course two bald rear tires were not helpful! Cheer on the Badgers today when they meet a formidable opponent! The sweet 16 would be nice, I think, if they have a really good day, they could win!
3/19/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It did freeze last night thus the AM temp was a cool 29 degrees. It is supposed to warm up today into the 50s and stay there through Monday, then a cool down to normal or below temps again. Yesterday was beautiful and sunny, but a north west wind made it seem much cooler, especially in an open area like up in the field. Dogs did not seem to mind it a bit. How about those Badgers beating the #1 tesm!!
3/20/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M The AM tem[ was 38 degrees under a clear blue sky. Yesterday did bet into the 50's around here, but a nasty southerly wind that was supposed to be warm made it feel much colder. Today is predicted to get up to 60 degrees. The next three days will be cooler in the 40s, then a warm up for Friday. Typical spring weather for SW Wisconsin in March. The only snow remaining on the ground is along the road where there were piles from plowing. If the sun would stay out all day that would probably have melted.
3/21/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No watches or warning today. It is starting out as a nice day with a temp of 38 degrees, less wind than yesterday, and bright sunshine. Hope it stays out all day as the afternoons tend to become cloudy and colder. Rain is expected on Thurs night and perhaps through at least Saturday. At least it will help to green things up and reduce the already high fire danger due to all the windy conditions we have had. There was a robin complaining in the apple tree beside the house this AM. Still waiting for the arrival of the Blue Birds; we did buy two new houses for them yesterday in P'ville. I would hate to have a year without blue birds! The titmice have been singing for about a month now, and the crows are going absolutely wild, probably due to an owl, hawk, or the turkeys. They hate all of the above!
3/22/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another cool, 23 degrees, day with bright sunshine. It would have been nice yesterday if it had not been for that nasty north wind, and the clouds that persisted into the afternoon. Today has a high of 43 predicted. It is supposed to warm up and then rain Thurs night and return to the 50's on Friday with rain into the week end. So much for outdoor work again! The spring flowers are coming up nicely, and a robin was singing in the apple tree by the back door. Have yet to see any blue birds and we did buy then two new houses to replace the old ones that are falling apart from old age.
3/23/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Much warmer today at just freezing this AM. It may get as warm as the 60's by tomorrow, of course we will pay the price with rain this PM into Saturday, perhaps as much as 2". Some thunder storms are possible as well. No complaints since rain will make the grass green and the plants grow. I always hate a dry spring! Hope we are done with winter, but I know it will get cold at least one more time before it warms up. Still no blue birds, although they now have two new houses and three clean old housed in which to build a nest. Not many robins around here either. I did see a red winged black bird down in Marietta Valley.
3/24/2017 7:00 AM 0.34 0.0 M M M A rather intense thunder storm passed over here about 5:30PM with rain, hail, and some very bright lightning and loud thunder. It did not last very long, but our deck was covered with hail. When I went out side a while later, there were still white patches on the ground, probably because it has been cold the past there days. Today is warmer at 42 degrees on the way to maybe the high 60's by late afternoon.
3/25/2017 7:00 AM 0.12 0.0 M M M It did not get as cold overnight as predicted. The AM temp was 37 degrees under an overcast sky which we can expect for the next two days. Yesterday was very windy and it did rain in late afternoon. We could see the sun early next week. Weather spotting class on Monday PM. I suspect we will have more severe weather this summer than in the past two years.
3/26/2017 7:00 AM 0.17 0.0 M M M A foggy, dark, damp, dreary, depressing day with a temp of 39 degrees. It is supposed to warm up into the 50's today, but without the sun, I doubt it will feel very warm. Looks like the next two days will be more of the same!! Getting tired of the clouds and wind! I guess it could be worse, snow or sleet.
3/27/2017 7:00 AM 0.13 0.0 M M M Another dreary day, but it is a little warmer at 42 degrees and it isn't raining. Something to be thankful for, I guess. There could be some sunshine tomorrow, and then back to this until the weekend, maybe snow on Wed. Nothing like spring in Wisconsin!
3/28/2017 7:00 AM 0.02 0.0 M M M Yesterday was a little warmer, got up to 45 degrees, but no sign of sunshine. There was drizzle and sometimes a few rain drops. We went up to Viroqua to storm spotter training at 6:30, and it did rain most of the way, and again on the way home off and on drizzle. Today appears to be most of the same with a starting temp of 43 degrees under an overcast sky, again! Today is supposed to become sunny and warmer. Time will tell. Some snow predicted for tomorrow night.
3/29/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I expected it to be much colder today, but was it was 40 degrees under an overcast sky. Yesterday was a beautiful one with sunshine most of the day, warm temps and no wind. A perfect spring day! It is supposed to rain today and tomorrow and get colder, but some sunshine expected for the week end. I did hear a blue bird up in the field and one again this AM here by the house. There must have been a flock of Robins return yesterday also. Saw more than there have been around here.
3/30/2017 7:00 AM 0.31 0.0 M M M A little more rain yesterday but not as much as I would have expected considering it rained off and on most of the day. It is very overcast and there was some light rain before 7 AM although now it is raining quite hard. The dark and depressing weather is going to persist into tomorrow and maybe some clearing by late day on Friday. Sat. is supposed to be warmer with less clouds and NO rain. One day of sunshine all week! One would think we were in the UK where I spent 3 weeks in Aberdeen Scotland. I think there was one sunny day the entire time I was there. Talk about depressing! No wonder they eat fish for breakfast!!
3/31/2017 7:00 AM 0.21 0.0 M M M A little colder today at 36 degrees, but there is a 10mph N wind making it feel like 30 degrees. The sky is overcast, but no rain expected until Sunday. It may warm up into the 50,s for the rest of the week with perhaps some sunshine on Saturday. A warm sunny day would be nice with so much outside work to be done. This brings back memories of the time I lived on Milwaukee which has no spring, just summer and winter.
4/1/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A day without rain! Today is bright and sunny with a temp of 33 degrees on the way to 60. It will be great to get outside and do some work for a change.
4/2/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M From a beautiful sunny and warm spring day back to gloom and doom today. Showers expected for most of today and tomorrow. Tues. is supposed to be partly sunny. The AM temp was a warmer 43 degrees on the way to a high in the upper 50's. With some sunshine that would not be bad. Thinking about removing the plow from the Ranger, but that would surely bring snow. I still remember a picture of my then probably 8 or 9 yr old older son framed in the front door looking out at a blizzard on April 9, probably 1973 or thereabouts. I think we got around 9" of snow. Too soon to say good by to winter just yet.
4/3/2017 7:00 AM 0.21 0.0 M M M It rained almost all day yesterday with little to show for it in the gauge. Today is more of the same with rain falling at 7AM and it is supposed to rain the remainder of the day as well. The first "sunny" day will be Friday. We are starting to get "Cabin Fever". The grass is getting green and the early flowers are starting to bloom. Now how to keep the dogs out of the flower beds where they have already broken off some tulips just emerging from the ground. Of course the chipmunks will show up one of these days as well. They, too, love to scamper through the flowers and bury their treasures where the ground is soft. Can't win no matter what. I expect a few mice have built a nest in the heating ducts of the RAV-4 aga8h! The joys of country living that I would not trade for a life in the city, especially Chicago.
4/4/2017 7:00 AM 0.85 0.0 M M M The most rain so far yesterday. It rained all morning, then stopped and started up again sometime before 10 PM. It is raining again this AM but is supposed to become partially sunny this PM. The temp this AM was 45 degrees with moderate rain falling. Rams and I walked around the field yesterday and the ground is very soggy. I worry about flooding if the rain continues. Still no sign of blue birds, which is a concern, although they usually show up around Easter which is on the 16th. Judging from the amount of bird seed being eaten, there must be plenty of birds around here! The deer also have been eating all of their corn and even some I put in a bird feeder mounted on a tree. There are big hoof prints all around that tree and the feeder was licked clean. They seem to like the sun flower seeds as well as the cracked corn.
4/5/2017 7:00 AM 0.17 0.0 M M M Overcast again today with a temp of 44 degrees. It finally quit raining yesterday and tried to clear off, but the clouds came back and the temps never rose very much. Everything around here is pretty much soaked, and more rain could happen today. It is supposed to clear off by the week end with temps into the 70's. That would be nice after what seems like weeks of clouds and rain. The TV weather spoke of snow showers, but it is going to have to get much colder before that happens. We are leaving the plow on the Ranger just to ward off any large amounts of snow which can still happen into May!
4/6/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A day without rain here! Today is colder at 38 degrees, but feel much colder due to a gusty north wind. We are to have sunshine through Sat., then storms return for Sunday, perhaps some could be severe. This has been an early spring of wild weather so far, especially in the southern states and up the east coast. I guess we shouldn't complain about clouds and rain that will make the grass and flowers grow.
4/7/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is going to be a beautiful day with bright sunshine and temps warming into the 60's. The AM temp was a cool 30 degrees, the first below freezing all week (I think). Tomorrow will be even warmer with sunshine again, then on Sunday the storms move in, some could be severe. We needed to access some wood, so took the blade off the Ranger which could trigger some snow for sure. Did I mention that we did attend the storm spotter class in Viroqua on Monday night. It was probably at least the 10th one I have attended and learn something new each time. Although I do no go out spotting, I do have a HAM radio license, but leave that up to my husband. He does communicate with NWS via a hand held radio. Used to be the only way until the smart phone took over communication.
4/8/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Much warmer today, in fact 15 degrees warmer at 45 degrees. It was sunny at 0700 but the clouds have moved in now. It is supposed to reach into the 70's today due to a south wind, but I have my doubts especially if it stays cloudy. Tomorrow afternoon we will have rain again. I can't believe we are under a fire danger warning here since the ground was so soaked from all the rain, but there are a lot of dead leaves and brush around. We were out in the pasture cutting up old dead apple trees, and it did appear quite dry. We have had a lot of wind the past few days and two days of sunshine for a change.
4/9/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Very warm today at 57 degrees under a mostly overcast sky. We are to miss the brunt of the coming storms which will go to our north. We could get some showers, but that is all that is expected. Yesterday was beautiful and warm, up into the mid 70's in some places although very windy here. Not good for raking leaves.
4/10/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is very warm, 58 degrees, and quite humid under an overcast sky with the threat of showers. It feels like it could rain, buy last evening felt that way and no rain overnight. The storms all went to northern WI and remain there this AM.
4/11/2017 7:00 AM 0.10 0.0 M M M Much colder today at 38 degrees under an overcast sky again. It drizzled much of the day yesterday with a little rain about suppertime. Things are getting green and the blue birds have returned;now for some sunshine!
4/12/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M What began as a sunny day has now turned mostly cloudy with a temp of 36 degrees. Rain expected tonight, and heavy rain on Friday night and Saturday. We can't seem to put together two nice, sunny days. It does make things green, and the early spring flowers, including my Dutchman's Breeches that are beginning to bloom. I see the Trillium are coming up as well. They usually bloom in early May in the woods, but mine in the flower bed get more sun, so they bloom a little earlier.
4/13/2017 7:00 AM 0.48 0.0 M M M It rained most of the night producing less than 1/2 inch (0.48). Today is warmer at 44 degrees under an overcast sky. It is not supposed to rain today, but will remain cloudy and the next two days will be rainy with perhaps some thunder storms with heavy rain at times. Easter is supposed to be sunny and nice for a change. Things are really green here now. I planted some Cosmos yesterday in a flower bed; now to keep the dogs out of there will be a challenge since they are used to going in there and love the soft earth.
4/14/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another gloomy overcast day with a temp of 46 degrees.
4/15/2017 7:00 AM 2.14 0.0 M M M It began raining about 4 pm when a brief storm passed over here, then it started up again around 6PM or so, then it was raining at 10:00 and must have rained all night. I was very surprised to see the gauge full and over an inch in the big tube. It appears more is on the way out in Iowa, so I fear flooding around here. The AM temp was a toasty 59 degrees on the way to the 70's under an overcast sky. Now there are peeks of the sun, but it won't last long.
4/16/2017 7:00 AM 0.97 0.0 M M M A beautiful sunny warm (55 degrees) Easter Sunday. A few clouds have rolled in now and it is quite breezy. The bulk of the rain fell last evening. Just before 11PM a thunder storm came through with some pretty intense lightning and the loudest thunder I have heard for some time; it shook the house and made the dogs bark! It did not last very long and there was no hail, just poured rain for perhaps 5 or 10 minutes. It must have rained much of the night to produce almost an inch in the gauge.
4/17/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Back to normal today with a temp of 48 degrees under a partly sunny sky. This will be the last day of sunshine and no rain for at least two days. Rain is to return tomorrow and Wed. Things are really greening up and the fire danger should be less now. I planted some cosmos which should be up in a few days and the rhubarb will be ready in a day or so. Lots of spring flowers, especially blood roots. Picked a bunch of hepaticas yesterday. I have never seen so many of at least three colors with long stems. The blue birds have definitely staked out one of the houses. I think there is another pair as well. Yesterday was too windy to spend a lot of time in an open area. My dog with the long ears that stand up does not like the wind!
4/18/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A seasonable day with a temp of 45 degrees with showers and storms expected late morning. Tomorrow will be rainy with perhaps as much as 3". With the ground saturated around here, that could result in some flooding. The Wisconsin river has been elevated (bank full) for several days. The old Boy Scout camp on the east side of Hwy 61 was under water Friday. I have not been into Gays Mills, so do not know what the Kickapoo is like. It only rises when there is heavy rain in the hills north of here that feed run-off into the streams, etc.
4/19/2017 7:00 AM T 0.0 M M M There were a few sprinkles yesterday PM, but not enough to measure. Some sunshine for off and on in the afternoon as well. Today is overcast and chilly with a temp of 51 degrees. Storms are expected to arrive in late afternoon, some could be severe with up to 3" of rain and maybe some hail. The Wisconsin river at Boscobel was up into the parking lot of the boat landing on the west side of Hwy 61. There was some rain up north a day or two ago that we did not get, but no flooding was reported.
4/20/2017 7:00 AM 0.84 0.0 M M M Another cool, 51 degrees, and overcast day with some mist in the air. Temps not expected to rise out of the 50's. Sunshine predicted for tomorrow and Saturday along with warmer temps into the 60s. I went for a walk in the woods yesterday; lots of wild flowers out now. The Trillium in my wild flower garden are about to bloom. No sign of them in the woods, however, the deer have tramped over a lot of plants. I did not go down the steep hill toward the creek where there might have been some. With the wet ground and lots of downed trees, walking is not easy. Now that I have the old "Sportsman" ATV drivable, I prefer to drive down to valley and walk along the creek.
4/21/2017 7:00 AM 0.02 0.0 M M M It is cool, 41 degrees, and windy from the north making it very unpleasant to be outside. The day began cloudy, but the sun has come out warming it up a couple of degrees. We are supposed to have maybe three days of sunshine with no rain. With the ground saturated and some rivers rising, a brief relief from rain would be great. The tree leaves have really come out the past two days and so has the pollen. My eyes are itchy and driving me crazy. I guess I should be thankful that I don't have hay fever or whatever!
4/22/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A bright and sunny day with a cool temp of 42 degrees on the way to the high 60's by afternoon. The WI River at Boscobel is still high and there is some flooding north of WI Dells which is usual for that river. Have not been over by the big river, but I suspect it will be up as well. We may go to La Crosse next week so may get a look at it as well. Yesterday remained cool and very windy making outside work difficult. Lots of tree branches down, especially the pines.
4/23/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yesterday was a beautiful day with sunshine and temps on the warm side for late April. The AM temp was 51 degrees with sunshine in a clear blue sky. Temps could reach the 70's by this PM. Mid week will see a cool down with rain on Tues and Wed. Tomorrow will be windy with the threat of fires due to the low humidity and no rain for a few days.
4/24/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today looks like another nice one with a clear blue sky and bright sunshine. It is windy with gusts of up to 40mph expected. The fire danger is high due to several days of dry conditions, warm temps into the 70's, and now high south winds as well. it will get cooler for the rest of the week and rain chances are high starting tomorrow through Thurs.
4/25/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Looks like it is going to be another nice day with sunshine for now and a temp of 54 degrees. Showers expected this PM and for the next three days.
4/26/2017 7:00 AM 0.14 M M M M There was a threatening sky to the north west at 7:00, but so far no rain. The storms all went to the north and west of here. It did rain a little sometime after 8:00 last evening producing less than 0.2" of rain in the gauge. The AM temp was 57 degrees, close to the normal high of 61 for this date. The next two days will be mostly cloudy and quite cool with highs only in the 50's and some mention of a "wintry mix". Could that mean snow?? We are paying the price for the three beautiful days with sunshine and very warm temps. The trees are almost all leafed out now and the apple blossoms are budding. They usually bloom around mothers' day which is May 14th.
4/27/2017 7:00 AM 0.56 0.4 M M M Woke up just before 7 AM to the sight of snow falling at a moderate rate with the ground already white and the deck covered with at least 1/2" of the white stuff. There was 0.42" of rain in the gauge and am waiting for the snow in the funnel to melt for a total of all liquid that fell yesterday and overnight. I wish I could have gotten a picture of the poor, cold grosbeak that showed up yesterday, in the bird feeder covered in snow, eating sunflower seeds. Bet he wished he had stayed down south for another week or so! Hope this did not damage the apple blossoms, although tonight is expected to dip into the 20's that will kill any tender plants. The orchards lost so much last spring due to the late May freeze, I certainly hope this year the buds are not too far along to be damaged by the cold.
4/28/2017 7:00 AM 0.03 0.0 M M M A beautiful sunny day, but very cold for the end of April at 36 degrees. Showers are predicted for today and the next two days. Temps will rise into the 50's well past the week end. Yes, we are certainly getting pay back for the above normal temps in Feb.! At least none of the flowers froze and the apple blossoms seem to be OK too. Even the grosbeak is singing at the top of his lungs in spite of the cold. I wonder when his mate will return; the females always come later in the spring and leave later in the fall. Now where are the Orioles that usually return at the same time??I did put out some grape jelly for them, but I suppose the big red bellied woodpecker has eaten all of it.
4/29/2017 7:00 AM 0.09 0.0 M M M What started out as a nice sunny day, cold though, at 42 degrees, has become overcast. The highs are expected to reach the low 50's today with the threat of more rain. Amounts of 1 1/2" are predicted for the next three days. The grass is a bright green and the trees are almost leafed out now. The apple blossoms do not seem to have been damaged by the cold temps (we never got below 36 degrees), but there is still time for more frost in May and even June. For the animals sake I hope it does not freeze the nut trees' buds again. There was not a single hickory nut and just a few small walnuts. Maybe I should let the squirrels have some of the bird seed. I see the chipmunks are out and about and my husband says he just saw a Baltimore Oriole this AM. Now if we get an indigo bunting this year I will be happy!
4/30/2017 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Another cold, windy, and over cast day with at temp of 41 degrees on the way to the mid 40's. More rain expected today and tonight and through at least Tuesday. I guess it could be worse if there is snow again or a hard freeze since the apple blossoms are out now and the orchards cannot take another hit like they did last year when many lost their entire crop.
5/1/2017 7:00 AM 0.52 0.0 M M M Another cold and rainy day with a temp of 41 degrees again. Tomorrow is supposed to be the last of this. I thought it rained all night, but there wasn't that much rain in the gauge, so I guess it did not. It was raining quite hard at 7:00 this AM. The Wisconsin River at Boscobel was over the boat landing on Thursday, probably due to more rain up north. At least things are very green around here and the wild flowers are abundant!
5/2/2017 7:00 AM 0.39 M M M M Cold cloudy and rainy today with a temp of 39 degrees. A frost advisory is issued for tonight into tomorrow morning. It can't seem to warm up around here. The tulips and wild flowers will survive, and I've learned not to plant anything else much before May 31!
5/3/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Woke up to sunshine today, the first sunny day in what seems like weeks. It finally cleared off yesterday afternoon and became very windy, but it still felt good to have a bright day for a change. Today was the coldest here at just 34 degrees. I'm sure there was frost in the valleys this AM. No watches or warnings either, but the high temps are only expected to get into the mid 60's for the rest of the week with mostly sunshine. My cosmos don't seem to be growing very fast; perhaps all they need is some sun and a little warmth. We want to spray the garden for weeds, but the temps must be above 55 degrees overnight for it to work. The farmers are anxiously waiting to plant corn, although I've heard this year will have more soybeans instead which can be planted later than corn and still mature before frost in the fall.
5/4/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful sunny morning with a temp of 39 degrees on the way to the 60's. The rest of the week is supposed to be nice and into the week end as well.
5/5/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another sunny, cool, day with a temp of 48 degrees on the way to the 60's again. Yesterday remained sunny for the most part, and it did get up to 70 degrees in the afternoon. No rain expected until Tues or Wed next week. Perhaps things will dry out a bit around here.
5/6/2017 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Another sunny, very cool and breezy day. TAM temp was 49 degrees, but with the strong North wind it feels a lot colder. It did rain later last PM (was raining at 10:00 when we took the dogs out, but must have stopped shortly thereafter since there was not much liquid in the gauge this AM. The May sun is quite warm, but it doesn't feel so warm with the strong wind gusting. There are frost warnings for counties north of here for tonight. Winter just can't let go!
5/7/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful sunny and breezy day with a temp of 40 degrees on the way to the 60's. No warm up for this week either. There are frost and freeze warning for the area north and east of here for tonight. Winter hasn't left the area yet!
5/8/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
5/9/2017 7:00 AM 0.39 M M M M Back to the wet, overcast and rather nasty weather. The AM temp was 46 degrees, warmer than the past few days. The highs are predicted to reach 70 today, but no sunshine and more rain tomorrow. I must say everything is very bright and green today. We did have a thunder storm sometime past 11PM last night. Husband said it was an impressive thunder storm. I must have been very tired because I slept through the whole thing, but I did hear a dog bark earlier, so I suppose she heard the thunder long before we could!
5/10/2017 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Today is partly cloudy but quite a bit warmer at 55 degrees. More rain expected this afternoon. There is a big blob on the radar out in Iowa heading this way. A warm up expected for the week end. The Orioles finally showed up yesterday, hopefully for good. I saw a pair of males, and the jelly and oranges were gone. I can blame most of that on those big red bellied wood peckers that just demolish the oranges with those big long beaks.
5/11/2017 7:00 AM 0.47 M M M M Very foggy this AM with low visibilities until 9AM. The rain started sometime shortly before 2PM and continued at a steady rate until 5PM producing almost a half inch of moisture. That is certainly keeping things green and very beautiful. I cannot remember a spring, at least in the past few years, when we had this much rain over a couple of months. I now have two pair of Orioles eating huge amounts of grape jelly and oranges, of course with the help of at least two big old red bellied woodpeckers. I counted 5 male grosbeaks in the feeders, and I think there are probably more who weren't there. They love the suet we put out for the woodpeckers. Since I have not seen a deer in about two weeks, they are probably giving birth to their fawns now, so will put the corn resources into suet!
5/13/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A mostly cloudy day with a temp of 57 degrees on the way to 80 for the first time this spring.
5/14/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A beautiful day with a warm temp of 57 degrees and bright sunshine in a clear blue sky. Rain will return tomorrow and probably for the remainder of the week. I planted some flowers and bought some plants which I left in their pots until I'm sure it won't freeze; in about two weeks around here should be safe. Lots of outside work to be done!!
5/15/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M After a couple of warm and sunny days, we are back to the clouds and wind with the threat of thunder storms for this PM and tonight. The up side is everything will stay pretty and green as long as it rains.
5/16/2017 7:00 AM 0.95 M M M M Sever storms late yesterday and overnight with high winds, large hail, and tornadoes. We escaped with just almost an inch of rain and some wind! More storms expected tomorrow!
5/17/2017 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Another overcast day with a few rain drops falling. The AM temp was a toasty 65 degrees. Yesterday got up into the 80's for the first time this season. More storms predicted for today, some could be severe with hail and gusty winds. I did plant a flat of annuals which I hope don't freeze in the next two weeks. The outlook for the rest of the month is for warmer weather than we had in April, so I hope we are safe from a killing frost like we had last year in May.
5/18/2017 7:00 AM 0.54 M M M M A cool and cloudy morning with a temp of just 60 degrees after a wild night of thunderstorms, wind, hail and tornadoes. We managed to escape the severe storms again. There were three lines of thunder storms that started out in Iowa in the afternoon and ended up in eastern WI sometime past 9:30 PM. There were reports of a tornado in Richland Co, just to our east, but no confirmation of that today. I saw pictures of golf ball sized hail, trees and power lines down, and lots of rain. We got only 0.54" from the second storm around 4PM. It rained hard, but did not last long. The weather spotters were called out for the second time this week. My husband heard reports from fellow hams from four counties. Last year they were called out once all year and then recalled before they could get to their destinations. I think this will be a year of active weather if May so far is any indication of what is to come. There was some mention of perhaps frost in the northern counties overnight. I hope not here since I did plant some annuals against my better judgment!
5/19/2017 7:00 AM T M M M M It's back to winter today with a temp of 43 degrees under an overcast sky and a brisk wind. I have not heard if there was frost up north, but it wouldn't surprise me. Our brother-in-law was amazed at the leaves on the trees here since they live near Wausau where he says they have no leaves out yet. It is surprising that 200 miles can make such a difference, although Boscobel, just 11 miles south of here, had a much worse storm two nights ago than we did which is often the case. I really did not notice much difference living in Chicago (roughly 200 miles to our south) for two years. We are supposed to stay cold through the week end.
5/20/2017 7:00 AM 0.24 M M M M Woke up t0 another dreary, cloudy, windy, and cool day at 47 degrees. It began raining about 30 minutes ago and is expected to do so for the rest of the day. We really don't need any more rain here although it is good to see so much green grass, etc. Things may clear up by tomorrow night and some warmth will return later in the week.
5/21/2017 7:00 AM 0.52 M M M M The weather service describes today's weather as cool and unsettled. The sky is mostly cloudy, although there were a few peeks of the sun earlier. The temp was a cool 50 degrees and not expected to rise much higher all day. This could continue at least until Wed. with tomorrow predicted to have perhaps severe storms in the afternoon. It would be nice to be able to get outdoors and do some gardening and plant some flowers. The seeds I did plant have not yet emerged and probably won't as long as this weather persists. At least there was no hail or strong winds here. With Memorial Day a week away we usually have the garden planted by the start of June, but probably won't happen this year. Seems it is either too wet or too dry to dig in the dirt. First we have to spray the weeds which can't be done unless the temps at night stay above 55 degrees F. The day time temps barley reach the 60's! I still would rather have beautiful green everywhere than dry and brown.
5/22/2017 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M What started out as a beautiful, clear and sunny blue sky is now becoming cloudy. More rain is predicted for this PM after 4:00, and again tomorrow and perhaps Wed as well. We can't seem to break the cycle of clouds, cold and rain that we have endured for nearly a week. It reminds me of Scotland where I spent 3 weeks, all of which were gloomy, cloudy and cool and this was in August! They were complaining of the heat when it broke 70 degrees one day! Good thing most of the corn is planted around here, although some fields have not been tilled at all. One can plant beans later in the season, which I suspect will happen.
5/23/2017 7:00 AM 0.38 M M M M Another gloomy, overcast day with a temp of 53 degrees. The predicted storms for yesterday did not materialize until past 10PM. There was some pretty loud thunder with the usual lightning, then some rain. It did not hail nor were there strong winds. Today will be rainy again! The grass will be knee high before it can be mowed, and planting a garden is impossible. The farm fields in low lying areas all have standing water that will not disappear until the sun shines for more than a few minutes like it did yesterday. Those farmers who planted their corn during the brief dry spell were very lucky. Much of it is up and growing. The annuals that I planted don't seem to be doing very well, though.
5/24/2017 7:00 AM 0.07 M M M M Today is like the rest of the week so far, cool, cloudy and unpleasant. We are planning a trip down south to Platteville and Potosi to carry on the family tradition of decorating the parents' and grandparents' graves. My son used to comment that he could look out of his dorm room window and see the cemetery where his grandfather was buried the year before he graduated in 1986. I hope it doesn't rain today because walking through wet grass is no fun!
5/25/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another cold, at 53 degrees, overcast, dreary day. If the sun comes out it could warm up to 70 today. So much outside work to do and unable to do it. Went on the cemetery run yesterday. There is quite a bit of corn coming up in the fields and if it keeps raining, there will be a good crop again. Around here it appears as if there are going to be more bean fields since the price of corn is not very high and beans seem to be doing well.
5/26/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A cool and mostly overcast morning with a temp of 56 degrees. Showers predicted for this PM and the same for the next two days. Yesterday did remain mostly sunny and wormer in the high 60's, still below normal for this date. We were able to do some yard work and spray the weeds in the garden.
5/28/2017 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M Woke up to an overcast morning that soon cleared and became sunny in a clear blue sky. Perhaps this will become a nice weekend in spite of the fact that the weather service says there could be showers later this PM. It rained yesterday in late evening, not sure just when, but the deck was wet at 11PM and there was some rain in the gauge this AM. It threatened rain all day, but the most rain was a few drops an two separate occasions. Hope tomorrow is sunny, although they are predicting cooler, in the 60's and rain. We plan to drive over to Prairie to Wyalusing State Park for our usual picnic that we have been doing every Memorial Day since we started dating in 1059. That is a beautiful place, and so close. I used to love going to the Lake Michigan shore up to Harrington Beach State Park and just walk in the water. Such a beautiful beach. One of the few advantages of living close to the big lake. Sometimes I do miss Milwaukee, but not enough to want to return there!
5/29/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today dawned cool, 52 degrees, and clear with bright sunshine in a blue sky. Today we head for one of the most beautiful places in Wisconsin. One can witness the confluence of the Wisconsin and the mighty Mississippi Rivers from the bluffs. It is quite a sight with the city of Prairie du Chein in background and perhaps the rumble of a BNSF train on the tracks along the banks. If we are lucky and take the scenic route on Hwy 35 along the river we could see a tug boat towing barges, and maybe going through the locks on one of the many dams. Since the river is supposed to be high from all the rain we might be in for a treat. We Wisconsinites often travel to other places for scenic beauty when we have some of the most beautiful places on earth right in out own back yard!
5/30/2017 7:00 AM T M M M M Another cloudy and quite cool, 53 degrees, morning with the sun starting to break through the clouds. I wish it would just rain and get it over with instead of there little showers many times a day. We did drive along the Mississippi yesterday and it is high, many places that are normally dry were under water. The dock in the Park was submerged and someone was out there fishing anyway! Takes all kinds I guess. It was extremely windy up on the hill, so our picnic was a challenge to keep everything from blowing away. There were two BNSF trains that passed below us on the tracks along the river bank. One was waiting for the second to come and then pass before going on its way north. No barges, though. Perhaps the demise of the coal fired power plants along the river has reduced the barge traffic, and it is too early for grain to be moving, although some hold it in order to get a higher price.
5/31/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is bright and sunny, but cool, with a temp of 53 degrees at 0830. Things are supposed to warm up in the next couple of days, of course it is expected to rain then! I did plant out some of the greens I over wintered in the house, so I hope there is no frost now. The annuals I planted about two weeks ago still have not come up; too cold, I think.
6/1/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another sunny, but cool day at just 47 degrees. It never got very warm yesterday either and there was a strong wind again making it feel even cooler. NWS said that May had only 3 80 degree days while a normal May would have 6. Globel warming?? Perhaps we are in for a cool summer. I don't like the heat, so will welcome that.
6/2/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful sunny day with a cool temp of 57 degrees at 0800.
6/3/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is partly cloudy and warm with temp of 68 degrees on the way to maybe 90. It is becoming humid and rain is expected later this PM and into the evening. We could use some rain, never thought I'd say that) after all the wet weather in May, but we are watering some plants now. Bought a bunch of annuals and got them planted yesterday, now hoping for rain, not hail which could happen later tonight. Debating whether to plant the last flat in an exposed are if there is indeed hail.
6/4/2017 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M There was some rain overnight, but barely. The air feels more settled, the sky is blue, and the sun is shining. It is supposed to reach into the 90's again today starting at 66 degrees at 0700. The rest of the week should be dry and sunny. Never thought I'd wish for some rain after all those cool and rainy days in May, but things are starting to dry out around here, and the newly planted crops could really use a drink! I always think of those years, especially 1976 when we planted hundreds of tiny pine trees that all died except the ones we watered by hand without running water there. The trees around the house we could water are now over 30 feet tall!
6/5/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A beautiful early June day with a clear blue sky and bright sunshine. Today will be cooler starting out at 60 degrees and low humidity. All of the flowers are planted, now it's time for the vegetables.
6/6/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A carbon copy of yesterday with bright sunshine in a clear blue sky with a temp of 56 degrees. Spent the morning in the vegetable garden planting seeds. Lots more to be done, and we need more flowers since there are empty pots to fill. The new tiller does a wonderful job preparing the soil and is half as much work as the old one was.
6/7/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Even a couple of degrees cooler today, otherwise a carbon copy of the past two days. Hopefully we will get most of the planting done, including the field of sunflowers we did not do last year. Instead of working yesterday, we went down to P'ville to get some more plants for the empty pots and filters for the dog waterer.
6/8/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is overcast with a temp of 57 degrees. We may get a small shower soon and more later in the day. Some rain would be nice since the ground is beginning to dry out and the plants could use some moisture.
6/9/2017 7:00 AM T M M M M Another beautiful day with bright sunshine in a clear blue sky. The starting temp was a cool 58 degrees. The warmth and humidity is supposed to return by tomorrow and last well into nest week. We were without power for about an hour and a half due to a bird's nest in a sub station. Great time for our back up power to be non operational since last February which means we have no water, no stove, no refrigeration. etc. It does not pay to procrastinate when it comes to fixng your Generac; just asking for trouble!!
6/10/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is clear, sunny, and will be very warm. Highs expected to get into the 90's with more humidity. It well also be very windy form the SW making it warmer with the hot air blowing around. We could use some rain, and some is predicted for the northern part of the state, but probably none here.
6/11/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is mostly overcast with a temp of 76 degrees on the way to the 90's. No rain again and none predicted for this area.
6/12/2017 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M It was already 76 degrees and very humid at 8 AM. We are also bothered by some pesky little gnats or whatever that flock to your face and are very annoying. At least they don't bite, but they do bother the poor deer and other animals out there. Today will be another hot and humid one with temps probably into the mid 90's. Some storms could also be possible. A very, very brief shower around 2:30AM produced little rain which we badly need. All of the storms of the past couple of days have been way to our north and did produce much rain. I just hope we don't get severe weather with hail, although we have had a lot of wind lately. The tree branches are all over on the ground!
6/13/2017 7:00 AM 0.57 M M M M An overcast and very humid day that is 10 degrees cooler than yesterday at 66 degrees. We finally got some rain about 5PM yesterday when it became very dark and windy, then the rain came. It did rain for about two hours, not hard, and there was no hail here. More rain expected through the rest of the week and very hot as well with today being the warmest. At least today we won't have to water the plants and the rain should have reduced the pollen count. Everything here is covered with a thin yellow haze of pine pollen, and not the candles as well.
6/14/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It was very dark at 0700 and a few drops of rain did fall for a brief time. The temp was a toasty 72 degrees with high humidity. More storms forecast for later this PM. We could use more rain, but don't want hail or damaging wind.
6/15/2017 7:00 AM 0.67 M M M M We got some much needed rain around noon yesterday. The skies got very dark and there was some loud thunder and lightning. Later on it did clear off and get hot again. Today is sunny and very humid again. There does not seem to be any relief in sight from the heat and humidity, at least until the jet stream changes and allows some cooler air from the north down.

6/17/2017 7:00 AM 0.56 M M M M The air feels a bit more settled today after a nice rain late day yesterday and overnight. The sky is sunny today, but the threat of rain still exists.
6/18/2017 7:00 AM 0.33 M M M M What began as a clear blue sky has now turned cloudy. It is cooler today at 62 degrees with much lower humidity, and there was some rain again overnight.
6/19/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is cooler at 59 degrees with sunshine in a clear blue sky.
6/20/2017 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Another chilly day at just 58 degrees under a mostly cloudy sky that just produced a little rain. Yesterday a shower in late afternoon produced just enough rain to get my sheets wet, but nothing more. We seem to have these showers almost every day with little measurable rain. We have to re plant our garden due to the fact that some critter, the people at the store where we bought more seeds say it was a raccoon. Since we must have shot 6 or so after we planted the garden, that must have been the culprit. There is a rabbit up there too, but the plants never got out of the ground, so he is not to blame! Of course, if we put the fence back up maybe this could have been prevented, although a raccoon can easily climb almost anything. Now it is the deers' turn. This year they seem to be different from other years, but there are still plenty of them around, just in different places. The neighbor says they are hanging around his place, probably eating horse feed! My tomatoes are doing well!
6/21/2017 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Another sunny and cool day with a temp of just 54 degrees. Much better than 120 they are experiencing in the SW US. There were several small showers yesterday, but none amounted to much rain.
6/22/2017 7:00 AM 0.09 M M M M Yesterday was a nice day with cool temps and some sunshine. Today started out at 65 degrees and very overcast. Several storms are moving through the area. So far little rain; most has gone to the south again. There are more storms out in Iowa, so we could get some more rain yet. It is starting to sprinkle now at 9:15AM, The sky is very dark and there is thunder in the distance.
6/23/2017 7:00 AM 0.97 M M M M At last some measurable rainfall that will do some good! The heaviest rain fell after 11 PM accompanied with much lightning and thunder. Our power just blinked enough to trip the AC, but the clocks did not react. Perhaps now the weather can settle down for a while since we have had rain almost every day all week. It is a bit foggy with a temp of 62 degrees and overcast.
6/24/2017 7:00 AM T M M M M Today is going to be a beautiful one with blue skies and bright sunshine. One of the TV weather people said there could be afternoon showers as there have been all week. It is cool at just 58 degrees, and yesterday afternoon became very windy and much cooler.
6/25/2017 7:00 AM 0.05 M M M M It was very cool this AM at just 51 degrees with a brisk NW wind, but sunshine. There was a brief shower again around 4 PM and it did rain hard for about 20 minutes, then the sun came out. We see this almost every afternoon. We planted the garden for the third time hoping that whatever is eating the seeds has gone away. We put out the trail cam, so should be able to capture it whatever IT is. Lee shot a very big rabbit yesterday, but they would not do that, just eat off the plants when they come up. Something ate off one of my flowers here by the house. Probably the rabbit that we see down here! Just can't win this year!!
6/26/2017 7:00 AM T M M M M Cool and sunny again today. Yesterday never got up to 70 degrees. With a strong breeze, it felt more like later September than the beginning of summer. Today will have afternoon showers again and by Wed. perhaps severe storms.
6/27/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful, cool day at 61 degrees at 10AM. Yesterday remained cool all day with the temps never rising above 70 degrees. Today feels like it will be warmer. Storms expected tonight and into tomorrow and with them more humidity and warmer temps.
6/29/2017 7:00 AM 1.30 M M M M Today is partly cloudy and very muggy with a temp of 64 degrees. We had a very severe bout of weather starting around 2:30 yesterday with heavy rain and much lightning and thunder. Once again we seemed to have escaped the worst including hail, tornadoes and strong winds. There was damage around this area.
6/30/2017 7:00 AM 0.63 M M M M Today is overcast and humid after an overnight rain. The temp is a comfortable 63 degrees. We are pretty much soaked now, but everything is beautiful and green and the corn is growing like crazy. Good for the farmers around here! Something dug up our garden for the third time, so don't have to worry about that anymore.
7/1/2017 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Clear blue skies, bright sunshine, with lower humidity and a temp of 59 degrees. If it does not cloud over and rain this will be a beautiful day. A good time to wash dog beds and the RAV mats. It takes a day of sunshine to dry them and I have been trying to cut back on my dryer usage and let nature do it. We have just too many trees to have areas where there is sunshine for much of the day.
7/3/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain yesterday for the first time in about a week, if some was only a T. Bright blue sky with lower humidity and sunshine. We are supposed to have one more day of this before the heat, rain, and humidity return. We did have some severe storms on the 28th that knocked out power and caused some of the State Parks to be closed for a few days until the debris could be cleaned up. Even the Mississippi River had elevated levels and the Wisconsin was bank full again.
7/4/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another sunny, cool summer day with a temp of 63 degrees.
7/5/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Warmer and more humid today at 69 degrees under a clear blue sky with sunshine. The past two or three day were ideal, but now the weather is becoming more summer-like with the humidity and heat. Have not looked at the weather this AM (our ISP is very slow) I suppose people are catching up on their facebook and twitter feeds after a holiday! Broadband would be nice, but getting here will be next to impossible!! Even people with in home businesses are unable to get it. All of the money, and there has been plenty, has gone to the urban areas in the state, More money and political clout, no doubt. I can understand why AT&T wants to make more money. Since they bought DirecTV our bill has gone up at least three times!
7/6/2017 7:00 AM 0.24 M M M M A morning and late afternoon shower produced almost a quarter inch of rain. There was some thunder and lightning with the PM shower. Today is warm, 65 degrees, and muggy and is expected to be a repeat of yesterday although the storms are predicted to be more severe this time.
7/8/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M An absolutely perfect summer day with a temp of 62 degrees under a cloudless blue sky with bright sunshine and low humidity. The rain and storms will return Sunday afternoon and evening.
7/9/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The start of another beautiful day, although the clouds are already moving in. The AM temp was a pleasant 62 degrees with more humidity and storms expected late this PM and into the evening. We could use some rain as all of the storms of the past few days have totally missed this area dropping much rain on the north and south east parts of the state. Some severe weather including tornados and over 4" of rain in a very short time causing flash flooding.
7/10/2017 7:00 AM 0.38 M M M M Woke up to an overcast soggy day with a temp of 63 degrees. We had storms after 1AM, but nothing very serious. There were warnings for severe storms for two counties to our west in Iowa, and the warnings for WI were to our north and east again. We did have some thunder and lightning, but nothing very severe. We could have used more rain!
7/11/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M An overcast day with a temp of 65 degrees. Some showers predicted for today, but the worst will come this evening. Some areas of the state received over 5" of rain two nights ago, so they don't need any more now. We could use some more moisture, but don't want downpours, hail, or strong winds like they had. That area in the middle of the state had been hit with all of the severe weather so far. I guess we are lucky in that regard.
7/12/2017 7:00 AM 2.15 M M M M It was very dark at 7:00 and started to pour again. Rain began after 11PM and continued all night. Everything around here is soaked! The AM temp was a humid 66 degrees with rain falling.
7/13/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
7/14/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A cloudy and cool day with a temp of just 59 degrees. It is supposed to become sunny later. Tomorrow the heat will return again with it the threat of more rain and storms. Some areas around here do not wish for rain. There were some places in Iowa that got over 8" of rain in that storm on Wed. morning. I talked to someone who lives in Iowa who said her husband had met a farmer who claimed they got 10" out of that storm. He was probably right, since the rain amounts were all over the map here! The Turkey River was very high and closed down hwy 52 for most of the day. Some of the rivers in WI still remain high today.
7/15/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another cool day with a temp of 57 degrees under a mostly sunny sky. Today is supposed to be hot and humid, but so far is not. More storms expected tonight, some could be severe again.
7/16/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A hot(70) and humid overcast start to the day at 0630, which has now become partly cloudy, breezy and the humidity is dropping. All of the storms predicted for last PM missed us again. There was much lightning and some distant thunder at 10 PM, but it all went to the east. Places that did not need rain probably got more again on top of last week's flooding.
7/17/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A beautiful day with bright sunshine in a clear blue sky. The AM temp was a pleasant 61 degrees.
7/18/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today will be a hot and humid one with storms expected later today.. It is 65 degrees under a partly cloudy sky. A good day to spend time at the Crawford Co. Court House doing my civic duty as a juror. I hope I don't get picked as happened last time some 19 years ago just after moving here.
7/19/2017 7:00 AM 0.10 M M M M Today is warm and very muggy under an overcast sky that is beginning to clear. The temp is a warm 69 degrees. Severe storms expected late tonight with strong winds, rain, maybe hail. We got a small amount of rain around 10:30 last night. It was thundering and there was lightning starting at 10 PM. We have had lots of lightning with all of these storms this season so far.
7/20/2017 7:00 AM 3.18 M M M M Be careful what you wish for! We received over 3" of rain, most of it coming after 10PM. There is major flooding in some areas north and east of here. Some places along the Mississippi got over 6" of rain. More is expected on Friday which is not a good thing. The ground here is saturated, so any more will run off into the rivers and streams already flooding. No real damage here, just a few dead branches down and evidence of heavy rain. There were some reports of tornadoes, but do not know if any actually happened. One weather man on TV gets so hyper, who knows what he saw!! Many roads closed due to mud slides and debris on the roadways.
7/21/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain yesterday or overnight. The AM temp was a mild 67 degrees under an overcast sky. Storms are predicted from today into perhaps Sunday. They are already forming out in Iowa, and it does not look good since they are headed in this direction. As much as 2" more of rain could fall on top of what we have already received this week. We went over to Gays Mills to the Bank, and read the river (Kickapoo) level at 4PM. It was still above flood stage at 13.16 feet. It is still high to the north, so will probably go higher especially if we get more rain today. Our road is a disaster! Hopefully someone will come to look at it in the near future! Some of the ruts are so big they cannot be driven through. The WI River at Boscobel was bank full yesterday and will probably go higher with the flooding to our north.
7/22/2017 7:00 AM 1.04 M M M M It rained most of the day yesterday with some thunder and lightning. It was for the most part a gently rain, but on top of the already soaked ground, there was flooding to out south. The AM temp was a humid 70 degrees. The WI River was bank full as was the Kickapoo. NWS says the Kickapoo has some flooding. Some places north of here had over 6" of rain on Thurs and more yesterday.
7/23/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The first day in a while that there are no storms predicted for the day. Today is sunny with a temp of 64 degrees on the way to 80. It still feels quite humid since everything is saturated from all the rain. Storms are predicted to return on Tue and Wed along with the heat and humidity. The Kickapoo River is flooding to the extent that all of the roads into Gays Mills were closed yesterday PM. Since we were unable to get even close to town, thus no ability to say how far up main street the water was. Judging from the amount of water over the bridge on CO S at Petersburg it was probably got up to the bank again like in 07 and 08. Was not in Boscobel so have no idea how high the WI River got there. Wish for less rain on Tues. Our road is almost impassable due to the huge ditches that were created by the rushing water.
7/24/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain again, but no sunshine either. Today is much cooler at 60 degrees, yet there is still some noticeable humidity. I have not looked at the weather so do not know what is in store for today. Last evening it felt as if the front had finally passed, and we would perhaps get some sunshine to dry things out a bit. My poor flowers have been drowned!
7/25/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful day with sunshine in a clear blue sky, low humidity, and a temp of 60 degrees. I walked around the path through some pine trees and then into the woods in an area one might call a pasture. There were large limbs down from three big trees, and small branches down all over, including a big branch on the fence. I sent husband there to cut the branch off the fence, and the chain saw died!! Typical. It was deemed an expensive repair so we now have a new one! His assessment: a small tornado went through there. We did have a tree down in the woods by the house also. We have had straight line winds before, but nothing like this. Since it happened overnight, we were completely unaware of what happened.
7/27/2017 7:00 AM 0.32 M M M M Today is still a bit muggy with a temp of 67 degrees under a bright blue sky and sunshine. We did have a couple of brief showers, one in the morning and again in the afternoon, but neither produced a lot of rain. It appeared like Iowa got hit again as did some areas to our north. Things are beginning to dry out around here and the rivers are receding slowly. We are sawing down big tree branches(with out new chain saw), one a walnut, that were blown down. I think that storm was much worse than we had previously thought.
7/28/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today id another beautiful one with bright sunshine in a clear blue sky and lower humidity. At least things will get a chance to dry out around here. No rain expected until mid week. The AM temp was 64 degrees on the way to the lower 80's which is normal for this time of year.
7/29/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is going to be a carbon copy of yesterday with blue skies, low humidity and plenty of sunshine. The AM temp was a pleasant 60 degrees on the way to perhaps the high 70's. A good day to do outside work!
7/30/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful summer day, but cooler at 58 degrees under a clear blue sky. It is starting to feel a bit like fall. The days are definitely getting shorter. The sun rises now a little before 5AM and sets around 7:15 PM. The day is an hour shorter than it was back in May. I actually love this time of year, especially late Sep. and Oct., but never look forward to winter which can be brutal around here, although the past two had few below 0 days and less snow than we have seen.
7/31/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another nice day with a temp of 63 degrees under a partly cloudy sky. More storms on the way for tomorrow night into Wed. It has actually dried out here and the rivers are almost back to normal levels. One can hope the coming weather system does not bring more misery to the people already suffering from the floods of the past couple of weeks.
8/1/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today will be another nice one starting at 61 degrees under a clear blue sky and bright sunshine. Storms expected tomorrow and into Thurs. It really is beginning to feel a lot like fall even though we still have almost two months left in summer. I don't like to see all showing up everywhere. I suppose Christmas will make an appearance one of these days!
8/2/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain yesterday and none so far today. The AM temp was a mild 63 degrees under a clear blue sky. There is supposed to be rain today and the rest of the week.
8/3/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M An overcast day with the threat of storm that are already out in Iowa and moving this way. They say the threat is greatest this PM, but it is getting very dark and I think I can hear thunder in the distance. The AM temp was 65 degrees, and the air feels more humid than the past few days. I hope we do not get hail or severe winds. We have not sawed up the last tree that fell down near the house.
8/4/2017 7:00 AM 0.27 M M M M Today feels more like early October than August with a temp of just 54 degrees wuth a NW wind blowing. We had two brief showers producing a little over 1/4 inch of rain. The remainder of the week is predicted to remain cool with the threat of rain. Lots of local fairs and the big state fair in Milw. this week. Actually, this weather is much better for the confined animals than 90 degrees heat I remember from the 80's when I lived in the city and had a son in Kids from WI that played every day at the fair. He would come home with his shirt soaked in sweat.
8/5/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain yesterday which was a cool day with temps about 10 degrees below seasonable norms. Today started out at 55 degrees with very low humidity and clear blue skies on the way to the low 70's again. Perfect fall weather if you do not want to swim or water ski!
8/6/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M An overcast day with a warmer temp of 61 degrees. No rain, but showers are predicted for later in the day.
8/7/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is clear with sunshine and a temp of 60 degrees on the way to 80. More showers on the way for Wed.
8/8/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A bright sunny but cool(55 degrees) morning expected to get into the low 80's. Perfect weather for outside work or hiking. It certainly does feel like fall, and the plants are beginning to show it as well. Since we have no garden thanks to the critters (the deer ate off the tops of most of my sunflowers), so all that remains is one cucumber plant and a few tomatoes in raised beds in a fenced area. We hope the deer don't find that since they are capable of jumping the fence in places if they are so motivated.
8/9/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A little warmer and a bit more humid today. The AM temp was 55 degrees under a sunny sky. Storms expected later today and tonight. We could use some rain as all of the rain has avoided us the past week or so.
8/10/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M What began as an overcast day has now become sunny. Rain predicted for this AM did not appear. It may later this evening. The AM temp was a warmer 65 degrees on the way to maybe 80. Tonight is expected to get down into the low 60s. This is just perfect weather compared to what August is usually like here: hot and humid!. I much prefer this cooler version. It will get hot in Sept. after school starts, although most schools around here are air conditioned now.
8/11/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We are entering another cool period with overcast skies and cool temps for a few days. Today was 62 degrees on the way to the 70's; again not typical for mid August in Wisconsin and the State Fair is on now when it is usually in the high 80's.
8/12/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today feels more like mid September than August with a temp of 51 degrees, clear blue skies and bright sunshine. It has been over a week since we have had any rain, and it appears it will be a while linger before there are even chances of some rain. The grass is still green and the crops look to be healthy. Lots of beans around here; probably due to the very wet spring causing late planting. There are beans where there has been corn grown for years. Come harvest time the price will be very low! Farming is a big gamble, some times you win, and sometimes you lose!
8/13/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another cool day at 55 degrees under a partly cloudy sky. The heat is scheduled to return for a few days with temps in the 80's that we haven't seen hardly all summer.
8/14/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Warmer today at 60 degrees under overcast skies with a little drizzle falling. We badly need some real rain, but this won't suffice. More storms on the way for Wed. that could bring severe weather. There are starting to be signs of fall and I think some of the birds have already departed for the season. They came very late and seem to be leaving earlier than usual. I hope this does not predict a long and cold winter, although we are probably due for one since the last two winters were not what I would call severe with long stretches of bitter cold and lots of snow.
8/15/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another cool and overcast day. Yesterday did clear off and the sun shown some of the time. Today was predicted to be sunny, but so far is not! Tomorrow rain and storms predicted. We could use the rain thouth.
8/16/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain again! It feels cool, although the temp is 63 degrees but there is a strong easterly breeze. Storms expected late this PM and evening. Nothing on the radar closer than Omaha. Many of the annual flowers are acting like it is the end of summer. Many have died and are turning yellow and brown. Of course the mole under the raised bed by the house did not help. Eventually all of the flowers in there are going to die because their roots have been cut off. Our gardening efforts this year have been a total disaster. I did get one cucumber yesterday and there will be more unless the deer decide to invade that space. Lots of green tomatoes there also.
8/17/2017 7:00 AM 0.44 M M M M Today is warm at 67 degrees, overcast and humid. We did get the first measurable rainfall for August, but not nearly enough. There are supposed to be more showers today.
8/19/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is going to be a beautiful day starting out with a temp of 63 degrees under a clear blue sky and bright sunshine.
8/20/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another overcast day with a temp of 63 degrees. Showers and thunderstorms expected for the next two days. We can hope we do get some rain. Everything is still very green and the grass is growing at a rapid pace. The crops are expected to be good again if there is no hail or damaging winds. The apple crop should be a record if the trees around here are any indication. I have never seen so many apples. There are a lot of walnuts as well, but not so many hickory nuts or acorns. Considering there were none last year, the squirrels have certainly thrived. Probably due to eating a lot of our bird seed and corn.
8/21/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
8/22/2017 7:00 AM 0.05 M M M M We did get a little rain yesterday PM, but not enough to be of much help for the plants. The AM temp was a normal 64 degrees under a mostly sunny blue sky. It feel a bit humid but the rest of the week is supposed to be cool, in the 70's and sunny with less humidity. The Co. fair starts on Thursday, so we hope for cool weather and not rain!
8/23/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A beautiful, cool but sunny day with a temp of just 55 degrees. There is a chance of rain tonight and into tomorrow. Perfect fall weather for outside work, but the growing season is starting to slow down. Went to the orchards for some early apples. I have never seen the trees so heavy with fruit, and the apples were just huge! Now pray it does not hail for a couple of months.
8/24/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M What began as a sunny day has become overcast, then back to sunny again. The temp was a cool 56 degrees, definitely feels very much like fall! This has not been a hot summer, in fact I cannot recall any over 90 degree days, although there were probably some. I just hope that does not mean we are in for a very cold and snowy winter.
8/25/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A cool, 55 degrees, overcast day.
8/26/2017 7:00 AM T M M M M Today began with an overcast sky, but has become partly sunny now. The AM temp was warmer at 58 degrees on the way to the 70's again. This is usually the worst time of year for heat and humidity, and we have had none of that so far this August with just a week to go in the month. We went to the Co. fair yesterday. We love to see the 4H animals, some huge pigs, beef cattle, and cute little goats and llamas, not to mention the crowing rooster and noisy ducks and geese.
8/27/2017 7:00 AM 0.09 M M M M We had wished for some of the rain promised overnight, but little materialized. More showers predicted for today, but it appears to be clearing off now. The AM temp was warmer today at 62 degrees on the way to the mid 70's again. Some sunshine would be nice if it isn't going to rain enough to do any good for the plants.
8/28/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another overcast day with a temp of 60 degrees on the way to the mid 70's again. Still no rain to measure and the ground is very dry here although the grass is green and the crops look great. We have so many apples on the trees the branches are hanging almost to the ground. I went to the orchards to buy some cooking apples and they are just huge again, and quite tasty as well. If it doesn't hail, this should be a bumper crop. Can't understand why there are no hickory nuts and few acorns, but there are walnuts and butternuts.
8/29/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast and cloudy this AM with a temp of 61 degrees. The rest of the week is supposed to be nice with some sunshine and temps perhaps into the 80's. So sad to say good by to summer. All of the migratory birds have left except for the robins who stay sometimes into late September. Have not seen any of the hummers, but they could still be here. I saw an oriole last week. When the leaves fall, then I may see her nest, since she has been around that area all summer, I'm sure she has a nest somewhere.
8/30/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A little cooler today at 56 degrees under a clear blue sky with sunshine for a change. Rain expected for later this PM and evening.
8/31/2017 7:00 AM 0.63 M M M M We had our first significant rainfall of the month of August last PM around 8:30PM. There was a lot of thunder and lightning and as well, and must have been quite a bit of wind since there were leaves all over the deck and sidewalk. At least there was no hail! It is cooler today at 57 degrees under what appears to be a clearing sky. The remainder of the week is supposed to be cooler than normal and sunny. At least this will settle the dust created by the County's work on the road at the bottom of our hill.
9/1/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A beautiful sunny day with a temp of just 53 degrees on the way to the mid 7y0's.
9/2/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M What began as a mostly overcast day with a temp of 53 degrees has become dark and rain is falling. We could use the moisture but the timing is not the best for those who have a big weekend planned. Us stay at home people really don't care if it rains, but are glad for the moisture since there has been little in August.
9/3/2017 7:00 AM 0.19 M M M M Today will be a beautiful one although the starting temp was just 53, the high may reach into the 80's for the first time in quite some time. It will cool off again and remain that way for a while. There were two brief showers yesterday producing less than 0.2" of rain. The growing season has definitely ended, but it is nice to see green grass instead of the usual brown end of summer plants.
9/4/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Warmer today at 63 degrees under overcast skies. Today will be the warmest for a while as the next few days are predicted to be 10 degrees below normal. AM temps could be in the 40's for the first time this season.
9/5/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The showers predicted by the TV weather did not reach us last PM. The last couple of storms have come down from the north, but never reached as far as Crawford Co. Today is the coolest yet at 51 degrees, but so far the sky is clear blue and the sun is shining.
9/6/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Looks like it is going to be another beautiful day starting with a temp of just 47 degrees (first time into the 40's since early spring), a clear blue sky and bright sunshine. Today will be cool, but a warm up is coming by the weekend. Next week will be in the mid 70's again, something we have not had for at least a week. It just looks and feels like fall!
9/7/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another cool, at 48 degrees, day with a clear blue sky that is becoming overcast with showers predicted for later this PM. Yesterday was the same starting out with clear skies and sunshine, then becoming overcast, but no rain, which we could use. The next three days are supposed to be warmer and sunny.
9/8/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today started out cloudy and cool with a temp of 52 degrees, warmer than the past couple of days. The sun is now starting to break through, and the day is supposed to become sunny and warmer. We could use a little warmth at the end of a very cool August! I don't see many large ears on the corn, and the beans are still very green. Our tomatoes are still green, but there are ripe ones for sale at the farmers' market. I bought some acorn squash that was absolutely delicious!
9/9/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful day with sunshine in a clear blue sky. The AM temp was a cool 52 degrees, but is supposed to get into the mid 70's for the next several days. Perfect weather for outdoor work!
9/10/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M An overcast day that appears to be clearing and is supposed to be sunny all week. The AM temp was a cool 52 degrees. Yesterday was quite windy and eventually became sunny and a rather nice day. Hope the rest of this week stays nice since there is much outside work to be done before winter.
9/11/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is going to be another nice one with clear blue skies and temps seasonal into the low 80's. Yesterday remained sunny and pleasant. The AM temp was 50 degree. Things are very dry around here with no rain in sight for the remainder of the week.
9/12/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful day with a clear blue sky and bright sunshine. The AM temp was 52 degrees on the way to perhaps 80 again. Yesterday was a perfect fall day with low humidity and plenty of sunshine. If we did not need the moisture, it could stay like this into Novenber!
9/13/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful day ahead starting with a temp of 56 degrees, bright sunshine and a clear blue sky. No rain expected until late Saturday. Things are pretty dry around here; I fear fire when we live in the middle of a woods that is tinder dry.
9/14/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M This is getting boring! Another beautiful day starting with a temp of 56 degrees, a clear blue sky and bright sunshine. Some storms predicted for tonight and into Friday. Will we get some rain?? Things are really dry here.
9/15/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another day of the same except the temp was 63 degrees; warmer than the past few days. The cooler temps should arrive tomorrow.
9/16/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is overcast and warm with a temp of 65 degrees. There are storms to our west in Iowa that are moving north and east, but most have missed us and the ones that are coming are heading north and will likely miss us as well. We seem to be back to the old pattern of being missed either to the north or west.
9/17/2017 7:00 AM 1.16 M M M M Some much needed rain fell starting a little after 3AM this morning. There was loud thunder a lot of lightning. The rain stopped sometime before 7AM. I can't believe how dark it was before 0630. The days are definitely getting shorter...fast. I hate to see the end of summer, although fall is such a wonderful season around here with the colors, warm days and cool nights.
9/18/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another nice day that has gone from mostly sunny to overcast since 7AM. Can't get on the internet to see what NWS has to say, but yesterday they said rain for today. Not a good thing when you want to hang out the wash! The am temp was a cool 52 degrees. Today is supposed to be the coolest, then it will warm up perhaps into the 80's again by the end of the week.
9/19/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Looks like another beautiful day in store starting with temp of 58 degrees on the way to the 80's. It seems summer and fall are mixed up! First day of fall is Friday, and temps are predicted to perhaps reach 90 degrees! We could use some more rain, but all the storms of yesterday stayed to the west and then went straight north. We had a couple of drops and that was all. I didn't consider it even a trace.
9/20/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A very unseasonably warm day with a temp of 66 degrees on the way to the mid 80's. Temps have averaged about 10 degrees above normal for the past week. Paired with the trees turning color and the beautiful landscape in this the driftless region of WI, people are out in droves sight seeing and enjoying the last breath of summer which leaves on Friday. So sad to see winter coming! Not that I hate winter, because it, too, can be beautiful in a strange sort of way. I used to X-country ski, which bad knees and a poor sense of balance have now ruled out. Now I walk whenever possible if spouse plows a path up in the field. Still is beautiful and peaceful with the snow on everything. Hope not for a while, though!
9/21/2017 7:00 AM 0.09 M M M M A miniscule amount of rain fell overnight, at 2AM I am told. A storm missed us after 6PM, but we got only a few drops and some thunder. Places to our north, where it always seems to rain, had flash flooding and ping pong ball sized hail. Guess we should be thankful we did not get that. The apple drop is just huge, and most of it is still on the trees, so that would have been a major disaster. I can't get on the internet again, so have not seen the weather forecast. It is still warm at 66 degrees. Tomorrow is supposed to reach almost 90! Summers last gasp, I guess. Hard to believe today is the last day of the summer of 2017 that has been cool and dry these past two months with a very wet spring and early summer.
9/22/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is more like a mid July one than the first day of fall with a temp of 70 degrees when the normal is in the high 40's. This is supposed to last well past this week end. The cold front is due to arrive on Wednesday with showers and storms. This is "Apple Fest" weekend in Gays Mills when the village celebrates the harvest of millions of apples, the most of anywhere in the state. This year they will have probably the best crop ever according to the local paper. The long, cold, and unusually wet spring and early summer made the fruit large and beautiful. I always avoid going up to the orchards because the crows are just unreal for a small town! I am so happy for them because last year was terrible for them and the local economy. The fellow who did out driveway yesterday said the farmers are complaining about having no money, thus it affects his business as a small gravel hauler and road builder.
9/23/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is going to be another unseasonably hot one again with a starting temp of 67 degrees. Yesterday broke heat records, at least in Madison, at 91 degrees. I have not looked at the forecast, but they said yesterday that there would be storms on Monday.
9/24/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
9/25/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another unseasonably warm day starting at 64 degrees on the way to 89 again. It is supposed to cool to seasonable levels by Wed. It seems so strange to go outside at 7PM after the sun has set, and it is still very warm, like summer!

9/27/2017 7:00 AM 0.11 M M M M At last we have a taste of fall with bright blue skies with some fluffy white clouds and a seasonal temp of 53 degrees.
9/28/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
9/29/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another dry and sunny day with a temp of 49 degrees going up to 70. Yesterday was a perfect fall day with a cloudless blue sky and bright sunshine all day. Today is promised to be the same. We could use some more rain here, but the grass is still green. The leaves are falling at a rapid pace, and the walnuts are all over the ground. Hickory nuts seem to be all down now, but there are a million walnuts still on the trees. Went to the orchards on Wed., and there are still many apples on the trees and the crop is breaking records. The apples are huge again like last year and they seem to be of good quality. They say apples are late because of the very cool weather at the end of August.
9/30/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another cool, 47 degrees, sunny day.
