Later, a thunderstorm with frequent cloud-to-ground lightning was seen and heard passing along the northwest and western skies ~8:45am-9:15am. Intermittent rain showers began here mid-morning and continued into mid-afternoon, with increasing north winds and decreasing temps. Overnight rain. Dewpoints were in the mid 60s all day yesterday with high temps in the low 70s. Light fog yesterday morning lingered until 9:45am. Saw a monarch butterfly fluttering around, as well as silver-spotted skippers and cabbage and alfalfa butterflies. Hordes of ladybugs coat the sides of the house, making it hard to work outside -- they land on you frequently and sometimes bite. Feels just like a strong El Nino fall so far... |

The storm that began 10/25 ended last night, with a storm total of 1.88" of rain (no frozen precipitation). From 7am to 9am yesterday we received 0.45" (Signif. Weather report made), after which the storm slowed down, with only 0.22" of accumulation from 9am yesterday through 7am this morning.
The Little Sugar River at River Rd. (~1 mi. from here) was reportedly close to overflowing its banks yesterday afternoon. At 7am today, very little standing water remains in the low spots of harvested corn and soybean fields; the lawn remains wet and mushy.

WOW! We fell asleep to blustery rain and awoke at 12:08am to strong winds, heavy rain, frequent lightning, and hail pelting the roof and east-facing windows. The mostly pea-sized hail (a mixture of ~1/4" to 1/2" diameter) quickly accumulated on (but didn't completely cover) the ground. There were other short stints of hail overnight, and a round of what sounded more like sleet -- all accompanied by brisk winds, heavy rain, and frequent thunder and lightning. (There had also been brief, non-accumulating sleet yesterday afternoon.) On the previously-bare ground this morning is a patchy mixture of hail, sleet, and snow on very wet, mushy ground. Scattered daytime rain showers (0.17"); evening and overnight severe thunderstorms (svr. tstorm and tornado warnings issued). At 6:57pm, very heavy rain started, bringing 0.71" in 15 minutes (Signif. Wx report made). Further rounds of thunderstorms with heavy rain overnight brought another 2.03". No wind damage or hail observed. No power blinks/outage. Standing water in the usual spots this morning, but nothing extreme noted. Tornado damage <5 mi. from here with snapped power poles and roof damage.//Addendum 6/29/17 7pm: The usual flood-prone areas between here and Monticello are still flooded, and some unusual flooding has recently receded. Burgy Creek at Cty. F is over its banks. Cty. EE at Pratt Rd. was water-covered with road closure signs; now just Pratt Rd. is flooded while Cty. EE has cleared. Quite a bit of standing water remains in low areas of farm fields. NWS MKX classified the nearby tornado damage as two separate EF1 tornadoes occurring at 6:55pm (with paths 2.1 and 0.5 miles long). Record-setting high temps in the area yesterday brought us a baking 90°; afternoon dewpoints in southern Wisconsin were ~70°. It felt like a sultry day in July, not crisp and cool September!
