The low temp. set a record for the warmest minimum temperature ever recorded here in the 40 years since I began my daily temp. records on 6/26/77. It was the first 70° min. I ever recorded here in October as it shattered my old record of 69° from 10/4/86 & 10/4/02. The previous record for latest 70° min. was on 9/24/09 (70°). The earliest 70° min. was on 5/2/10 (71°). You snow lovers know what happened between those dates. I have recorded a 60° min. in every month except February (record: 53°). That is it for now from this suburban valley location (elev. 319') ½ mile north of John F. Kennedy High School (elev. 425') on the south side of Bel Pre Creek (elev. 295'). |

On this date 30 years ago (11/11/87) many locations in this region recorded their greatest November snow, including the 8.4" measured here with a record cold max. temp. of 32°. Please note that my snow depth reading are an average of measurements from 30 different places within a couple hundred feet of my house. There are significant differences in terrain, vegetation, and exposure within that radius. It is not generally subjected to strong wind as the area is protected from those winds. Wind gusts of 30 mph are quite rare (<1/year on average). Despite that, there are frequently significant differences in the measurement of snow and the rates of melting. Although the 8" raingauge and snowboard have good exposure, they are in a place where melting occurs more rapidly necessitating the large nummber of on ground measurements. Also note that I will carry a trace on ground if there is any natural undisturbed snow left inside my area. 1/3: 35°/6°/27°. |

Prec/snow(sleet) - 0905: .25"/0; 1715: .71"/.1". The prec. was all rain through the morning into the afternoon. Ice pellets were first noticed around 2 P.M. It stuck to some surfaces and not others. By the time of my second reading [above] the sleet was gone and a light mix of rain/freezing rain (temp.:32.1°) and snow grains was falling.It wasn't too long after that when the first actual snow flakes were seen. It continued lightly through dusk , but much of the evening prec. fell as freezing rain or freezing drizzle - the latter falling at obs. time. All the prec. after the sleet was light. 3/20: 41°/30°/31° Max. at 0105, min. at 2120.
For those interested, look up reports of the eqinox storm 60 years ago noting the prec. totals in the mid-Atlantic region and the snow amounts north and west of major cities such as Washington and Baltimore. The max. and min. temp. at DCA for the entire month of March 1958 was 58°/32° - the only March in Wash., D.C. history never to reach 60°. That led to the latest peak bloom of the Cherry Blossoms at DC's Tidal Basin. |

Thunder was first heard at 1716 and continued until 2244 never stopping for any appreciable time during that 5½ hour period - no more than 10-12 minutes. It was even continuous for short stretches. September prec.: 10.60". This is the tenth time since records began 8/4/76 that I have received at least 10.00" of prec. in a month. It is the first time it has occurred more than once in a year as I measured 10.04" in July. Despite the high total this is only the fourth greatest amount in Sept. here (and eighth overall) as half of my top ten list is from this month. The list is as follows: 13.85" - 6/06, 12.26" - 9/99, 12.04" 9/79, 11.52" - 10/05, 10.93" - 5/89, 10.91" - 9/96, 10.66" - 7/17, 10.60" - 9/18, 10.08" 9/87, & 10.04" - 7/18. 9/30: 79°/56°/64°. The min. of 56° is the coolest temp. here this month and is likely above normal for the date. |
