A gust front started to pass right at 7am when I was out taking my weather observation... a rumble of thunder, brief heavy rain shower and wind gusts to around 45 mph accompanied it. The strong wind kept up for almost 10 minutes and probably caused some tree damage in the area. The temperature 65°F. Rain ... with some embedded thunderstorms started just after midnight and continued through the night. Blustery overnight with the strongest winds.... 40-45 mph gusts... occurred between 2am and 3am, otherwise the south winds were gusting to 30-35 mph through the night. Yesterday - Mostly cloudy with a few sprinkles from time to time, breezy with south wind 15-20 mph with gusts 25-30. High temperature 75°F. |

The precipitation ended around 4pm. Cold with a steady morning temperature of 29°F gradually falling in the afternoon to 25°F by 4pm. The sleet and snow caused very slippery roads and numerous accidents, especially early during the event on bridges and overpasses which were iced over when the roadways were still mostly just wet. |

There were low rumbles of thunder beginning at 5:15pm that lasted for over two hours.... the storms stayed to the west of our area giving us only a few drops of rain. |

Severe thunderstorms rumbled through the area around 5:30am. Wind gusts at my location estimated to be around 60 mph. A 30 foot tall tree with almost a foot in diameter trunk was snapped off in the Park next us, and numerous tree damage and trees down in the area with power outages common in the Kansas City Metro area. And with all the wind and lightning, the rain amounts at my location were rather small, but areas nearby did get brief very heavy rainfall. The power outages caused several accidents at intersections where the traffic lights were not working. |

By the damage and how the debris was strewn about indicated a possible rope Tornado dipped down and snapped off three 8-10 inch diameter limbs from a Sycamore tree in the Park adjoining our backyard early yesterday afternoon. Two large trees on either side were unscathed. There were also numerous pieces of Sycamore tree bark strewn about our front and backyards and the neighbors which are between 200-300 yards from the tree. Straight line wind or a downburst would have caused a different pattern of damage, and with the large limbs lying in different directions would seem to indicate the circulation in a Tornado. An EF0 Tornado was confirmed and did damage at Lake Lotawana which is about 5 miles east of our location. I would presume this was the same storm cell. This occurred just after 1pm. There were also heavy downpours between 1pm and 2pm and strong gusty wind estimated to be 60 to 70 mph. We were not home at the time and returned from a vacation around 4:30pm, but heard the news on TV and a neighbor told us the time of the heavy downpours. I could assess the wind speed by the tree damage in the area, although the wind speed taking the Sycamore limbs off had to be higher. |
