10/2/2017 7:00 AM 0.81 0.0 M 0.0 M Non-severe thunderstorms after dark, with nearly all rain falling between 930PM-1245AM. The majority of the 0.81" fell as a southwest-northeast oriented squall line moved through mainly 1045-1145PM. Very brief, small hail up to pea size at 1130PM.
10/3/2017 7:00 AM 1.60 0.0 M 0.0 M The majority of rain (1.56") fell in multiple rounds of showers/non-severe storms mainly between sunset and 5AM. The other 0.04" was from a brief shower at 745AM on the 2nd. Had brief small hail (mainly pea size) around 815PM, but missed larger hail up to half dollar size that fell within 4-6 miles to the north and west. 10/7/2017 7:00 AM 0.94 0.0 M 0.0 M These 24 hours marked the "finale" of a very dreary, damp week. The majority of this 0.94" fell during steady light-moderate rain (with perhaps a few rumbles of thunder) between 8-11PM. Following a lull, another rain band on the back edge of the departing system passed through mainly 230-530AM. SIDE NOTE: although not a truly excessive amount (cumulative total 3.59"), this was the first time in the 14-month history of this station that measurable precip was recorded 7-consecutive days!

2/5/2018 6:30 AM 0.22 2.4 M 3.0 M Light to moderate snow ongoing at ob-time yesterday peaked in intensity between 6-9 AM before ending. This system was stronger-than-expected, with 3" of storm total snow and a few hours of dicey travel thanks to north winds sustained 20+ MPH/gusting 30+ MPH, also resulting in some drifting.

2/10/2018 6:30 AM 0.06 1.2 M 4.0 M This is the least-confident snow measurement of the winter-so-far in terms of accuracy, as there was just enough wind to render flat surfaces unreliable, plus it is getting more difficult to distinguish "old snow" from "new snow". At any rate, the daytime of the 9th featured occasional flurries (trace amounts). Then, around 9PM, a band of steady light (briefly moderate) snow moved in from the northwest and lasted for about 4 hours until around 1AM.

2/19/2018 7:00 AM T T M 0.0 M What a contrasting 24 hours of weather! Following an afternoon high of 63 degrees that melted all lingering snow cover except in the very-shadiest areas (also the warmest temp in over 2 months), a strong cold front surged in overnight with current temp 17 and a gusty north wind. Steady light freezing drizzle (mixed with a few snow flurries) started around 1AM and continued until shortly before ob-time, coating all exposed surfaces in a thin layer of ice (including a "perfect semi-circle" of ice adorning the north half of the rain gauge). At ob-time, only a few snow flurries were falling.

The first 2 hours consisted of mainly light snow/snow pellets, but this transitioned to light freezing drizzle after 6PM before ending. Although freezing drizzle from this event did slicken roads, the overall event itself fell well-short of forecasted expectations, as even within 24 hours of its onset, Hastings appeared likely to receive at least 1-2" of snow.

3/5/2018 7:00 AM T 0.0 M 0.0 M Occasional light rain/drizzle occurred mainly 1-4AM, including a very brief shower at 105AM that resulted in a "strong trace" of accumulation. There might have also been some snow flurries based on radar and nearby obs, but cannot confirm that any actually occurred here.
3/6/2018 7:00 AM T T M T M Light, but very wind-blown snow began around 6AM and continues at ob-time, barely visible on the grass at this time. The overnight hours featured some of the strongest winds seen in Hastings since perhaps Christmas Day 2016, with a peak northwesterly gust of 64 MPH measured at Hastings airport (3 miles NW of here) at 337AM.
3/7/2018 7:00 AM 0.02 0.3 M T M Steady light, wind-blown snow continued from ob-time on the 6th through around 1PM, but with the majority of accumulation occurring by 10AM. Although northwesterly wind gusts were not as severe during the day of the 6th as they were during the pre-dawn hours, gusts still averaged 40-50 MPH all day long before easing up after dark (because of the strong winds, there was nearly no snow in the gauge, so the 0.02" liquid is from a core taken off the lawn).

There might have been a few wet snowflakes, but cannot confirm. SIDE NOTE: This was actually the largest 24-hour precipitation total in over 5 months...since Oct. 10!
3/20/2018 7:00 AM 0.24 T M 0.0 M Part 2 of the precipitation event that started the evening of the 18th: Steady light precipitation, mainly in the form of rain, fell the majority of the time between 8AM-Midnight on the 19th before ending. Some light snow mixed in as well, especially during the morning hours, but it never accumulated due to temperatures holding just above freezing. SIDE NOTE: The 48-hour/storm-total precipitation of 0.53" marked BY FAR the largest event in over 5 months (since early Oct. 2017) and thus was very-welcomed moisture.

4/2/2018 7:00 AM 0.12 0.5 M 3.0 M This is a continuation of the Easter snow event ongoing at ob-time on the 1st. Steady light to moderate snow continued until around noon before tapering off to flurries/ending. With skies clearing in the afternoon, snow immediately started to melt a little, and although could only confirm another 0.5" of snowfall on the snow board (storm total 4.0"), it is likely that a bit more actually fell here. 4/14/2018 8:30 AM 0.11 0.3 M T M Part 1 of a fairly significant/late-season winter storm ongoing at ob time: Steady light drizzle/rain (non-freezing) got underway on the afternoon/evening of the 13th. By midnight precip became more of a freezing drizzle/snow mix, quickly slickening area roads. Shortly before sunrise, light snow finally became the more dominant precip type. At ob-time, various surfaces (including the north side of the rain gauge) were coated with a solid 1/4" to 1/3" of ice accretion. The other big story during the overnight/early morning was very strong north-northwest winds, with frequent gusts of 50+ MPH and a peak gust of 63 MPH at nearby HSI airport.
4/15/2018 7:00 AM 0.14 1.1 M 1.0 M Part 2 of a fairly significant/late-season winter storm (storm total snow 1.4"): Numerous light snow bands of varying intensity continued from ob-time on the 14th through around 9PM before ending. Although winds were not quite as intense during the daylight hours, 40-50 MPH gusts were still common, making for a very unpleasant and record-cold day with a daytime high temp of only 28 degrees at nearby HSI airport! Due to high winds, the gauge catch was not representative, so the 0.14" liquid is from a snow core. SIDE NOTE: Although this storm did not produce as much snow as expected, the combo of especially freezing rain/icing early in the event and the intense winds still made for an impactful late-season storm.
