10/3/2017 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The sun's moved far enough South, the umbrella's not cutting it anymore.TIME TO TRADE IT IN FOR SHOVELS.
10/4/2017 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Angry chipmunk heard and a few peepers. The annual grasshopper trying to lay eggs has been on the wooden rail. At least they are still here.

10/8/2017 5:00 AM T M M M M nothing in the gauge, but a little water on the wooden deck.
10/9/2017 3:00 AM 0.20 M M M M EARLY REPORT: The next batch of rain's just moving in within a half hour. Chipmunk fight, again, in the woods, no squirrels seen, and the 3 owls still don't know "Who, who cooks for you"? There's still one that sounds like it's doing monkey calls. Probably hits the sauce before it goes out for the evening.

10/18/2017 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Only the oak trees left to drop the leaves, but they're still green. Last in last out. I heard our only squirrel overnight, Mum accidently left the porch light on. When I went out, it came on. This upset a squirrel, which did the panic call, and crawling about to see what was going on. An hour later, there was an owl in the same area. I'd guess, we are squirrelless now. T'was the only one left. Sunset was 1803, today we are officially less than 11 hours of daylight, which gladdens me.

10/30/2017 2:00 AM 1.86 M M M M The rain's just ended. The wind has not. On the deck, we're close enough to the hill to be blocked from the wind, but the trees across the road are certainly getting it. We saw 3 wet deer, wondering why we were staring at them. We hadn't seen deer in 3 years. They were looking for food. Slim pickins this time of year. high temp was 57 during the day, it's up to 61 at this hour. Still no snow seen. Deck umbrella comes in Tuesday for the winter, once it dries out.

6/19/2018 5:00 AM 0.99 M M M M Severe thunderstorm arrived at 5:15, No hail to report, wind, on the other hand, came in excess of 60 MPH. A large tree we could see in the distance with 2 dead branches is no longer with us. I'm sure there will be candlelight vigils. My sister called to ask if there was a storm coming in, as I hung up after said call, the electrics cut off for 4hours, coming on at 9:30...for 45 minutes, then went out asain untill 3:35 AM.I couldn't put in any reports severe storm, because....... I was reduced to listening to local radio which never aired anything about severe storm activity otghe that we had a watch first, then a warning, nor the damage afterward.
6/20/2018 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 1 tree downed for our point of view from the severe storm, Monday. Meanwhile the power company was busy looking for the rest. 10 hours with no electrics here, but flashlights, battery operated radio kept me entertained. We have survided this horrible event. Viva La Restance. The bees nest that was on the tree branch my sister was watching to see how big it gets, currently needing upgrading needs), as the 60+ MPH moved it to a new location. CNN and MSNBC should have the details of how President Trump ordered the severe storm to happen. Follow them closely. MAGA!
6/21/2018 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Shortly after the severe thunderstorm Monday, Mum and I noticed the tree way off to the southwest wasn't there any more. Shortly after, the sounds of distant chainsaws was heard. 15 hours with out electricity. 15 hours! No cell coverage, no internet, as the boosters for cable phone serviced internet had no juice. Imagine all the millenials swearing at their computers/devices. I have battery operated radio, so I had entertainment. I managed nicely. It was kind of fun listening to Tenn. , Rochester, N.Y., Boston. Stuff the snowflakes never experienced, yet whine about it as if they did.

Around 5 AM I discovered bears like hummingbird feeders, all 3 were knocked down and one of the hook-posts was bent. Not a lot of food in this area. 7/30/2018 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hummingbirds galore! Over 30, birds not age, I never asked. All feed ports were occupied, and several chase scenes being performed at the same time. No casualties to report. Feeders draining faster than a toilet. Amazing birds they are.
7/31/2018 3:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M One would think nature was sorted out. One would think. For the last 2 weeks, the 30+ hummingbirds were on two feeders, but the 3rd feeder is being ignored. "Why?" one would ask. My sister said it was a particularly bad tempered male keeping the others away from said feeder. The secret has been revealed. A 5 inch tall woodpecker has claimed it as a feeding station. I nearly wet myself. The woodpecker was having libations, and watching the poor male hummingbird, to be sure it wasn't going to attack, in which the woodpecker would have just flown off, as they are mild-mannered. 1 lightning bug left, as been spotted. Looks like the bat(s) are doing their job. Deer has munched the tiger-lillies off, so the bear is obviously gone, and the fox is back. Welcome to The Granite State of Wildlife.
8/1/2018 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I spotted no woodpecker, but apparently the male hummingbird has. To be fair, he's outside, and mostly I'm not. I think there's a Peace Treaty agreed to.
8/2/2018 2:00 AM 2.03 M M M M It appears the hummingbirds and the woodpecker have worked out a peace treaty. Harold the woodpecker joind the hummingbirds on the middle feeder and there was no fuss. This happened twice, that I've seen, odds are more. Why is it humans can't do the same thing? Humans are supposed to be the smarter species.
8/3/2018 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I cleaned the gauge so well it looks new. No water this time, though. Our hummingbird population has drastically dwindled..2 possible reasons, 1) the neighbours have put their feeders out again because the bear is gone, or 2) an early departure, which happened a few years ago.
8/4/2018 5:00 AM 1.05 M M M M It came in as several near severe storms. Only problem was no wind, nor hail. Difficult listening to the AM radio, lots of lightning crashes, FM wasn't much better. The hummingbirds were back, as the storms cane through, the lot is back. No sign of the wet woodpecker when I was out. Probably just stayed in watching tele.
8/5/2018 5:00 AM 0.05 M M M M The kids (woodpecker and hummingbirds) are still getting along. This is the first time the woodpecker showed up with dry feathers. He must like the bird pub. Bees love to hang out there as well, but less pleasant.
8/6/2018 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Bit warm and humid, hummingbirds are still about. I think the "chase scenes" they do is more about cooling themselves off at high speed. I'm mystified as to why what appeared to be a black winged monarch butterfly appeared and landed right in front of me 3 times in a row as I went out to have a smoke...ahem "check the temperature".

8/8/2018 5:00 AM 0.61 M M M M Impressive storm, nice lightning show, no flooding, no big wind, but a noticeable temp drop. Warm rain though. Meaning the cooler airs isn't moving in. 8/11/2018 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hummingbirds are still busy as ever. We have a rather rotund Botfly. I remember them from when I was a kid, they hang around livestock (farm on Turkey Hill) that nearly made me pee my shorts when it landed on my hand, but I shook it off, with no bite. I have survived this terrible attack, and the beast is gone. Hummingbirds are clearing out 4 cups of water 2/3 cup of sugar from the feeders, and they do a grand job of cleaning them out in less than 2 days, Yeah, 2 feeders. Forecast says rain/showers, whatever they call it, which means the Hummers will be on High-Demand-Plus feeder clean-up. I have the highest confidence in their ability to accomplish the task at hand. Have a grand weekend!
8/16/2018 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hummingbird count is down, feeder consumption as well. It's that time of year. They're heading out. Bees aren't though. I smacked a botfly yesterday (it landed on me, what was I supposed to do, they bite). Botflies now? It's gotta be the farmer with the bad temper sending them down. Horse flies as well. Cardinals have lost the red feathers and turning brown. The times, they are a changin'. Happy near on snow day.
8/17/2018 4:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M As far as I counted, there are 5 hummingbirds left of the 30+ we had 3 days ago, the 4 on the two 4 cup feeders and the male guarding the one toward the back which only he and the woodpeckers use. There's definitely envelopes going around between them. Looks like a mob "INSURANCE" scheme. Seen it before.Hummingbird pays handsomely, and his feeder ain't gonna have problems, 'cause it'd be a shame if "sometin' went wrong wit' da feeda. Know what I mean"? Come on that was funny. What else can I type in when there's no rain? The mind wanders. Rain/thunder forecast today, let's see if they can get it right this time... they're bound to eventually.
8/20/2018 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nothing big to report, today, folks. Pools of water still in existence. I'd hope it's too late in the year for mosquitoes to be doing the Humpty Humpty, but we still have a winter mosquito in the area. Been here for several, and one that got microwaved by mistake, a couple years ago. They have to be more careful where they fly around. Have a great week. No snow to report, as of yet. Patience.
8/21/2018 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hummingbird population is decreasing, angey bee, bald face wasp population going up. I think winter's packed up and ready to be moving in. 8/28/2018 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 3 hummingbirds left according to Sis' count, although it's not been too accurate. Woodpecker/sapsucker's been around, fed then went about it's business elsewhere. No snow to report, Puss Puss is still doing the "conquered the outdoors lion roar. That's losing credibility. Heat and humidity in store for 2 more days, and the NWS has no idea if the cold front will provide rain. The circus continues with their forcasting. Another woodpecker showed up for liquid libations, but the difference is this one had no red stripe on the head (female). Hummingbirds are still in full force, especially when the sun is not on the feeders. Bees are consuming as much as they can, bit early in the year, and hummingbirds refuse to get along with them. Might be the stingers puts them off. Humid like the tropics again, after a 2 day dehumidify, it's back. No seen squirrel activity, nor any other wild life. 8/18/2018 8/19/2018 5:00 AM 2 2.84 M M Interesting storm event. Rain came pounding down, then light rain, severe thunderstorm warnings came out, nothing severe here, but to the east tornado warning went out, no word from NWS Gray if it happened. Flooding, (from signigant event report) was occurring from the weeks rainfall. Our yard is sloped from back being highest to front, lowest, and we still had a layer of water on the yard. After the rain stopped Saturday morning, the road and driveway dried out, except for a stream in the driveway from the yard runoff. Truly amazing. Hummingbird population has taken an uptick, as those from the north are passing through. White faced wasp is a bit more aggressive than needed, chases the hummingbirds off.Other than that, all's well, cats are happy they weren't burnt to death by the burning water of death, when it was raining. Cheers.
