Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/1/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, crisp, 43° with heavy dew. 24hr: 42/56° One plant is coloring up beautifully: Virginia Creeper that had started to climb a tall holly is turning bright red.
10/2/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 39° with heavy dew. 24hr: 38/58° Even though the low temperature overnight was only 38° it looks like we were very close to a first frost. Glad all the sensitive plants have already been brought inside for the winter.
10/3/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 42° with heavy dew. 24hr: 39° [likely yesterday a.m.'s reset] /61° More flocks of honking geese flying overhead this morning.
10/4/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Increasing cloudiness, 51° with moderate dew. 24hr: 42 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /62° Was sunny earlier but clouds thickened as morning went one. Now it's completely cloudy.
10/5/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, 59° 24hr: 51 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /68° Ground is bone dry.
10/6/2017 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Hazy sun, 57° with heavy dew. 24hr: 57/72° Didn't notice any rain, but the 0.01" is a lot more that the heavy dew amounts I usually observe, so it's probably both dew + precipitation.
10/7/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Foggy, 59° with moderate dew. 24hr: 57 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /69° A dead bumble bee in the funnel of the tube this morning
10/8/2017 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Light rain, 67° 24hr: 59 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /73° At OBS the rain hadn't even wet the ground under our large maple trees. So happy it's started gently, so that any heavier rain that we get doesn't just run off the parched ground. Rain is needed badly.
10/9/2017 8:00 AM 0.29 M M M M Overcast, dead calm, 67° 24hr: 67/73° Very humid.
10/10/2017 8:00 AM 0.29 M M M M Mostly sunning, 60° with heavy dew. 24hr: 60/71° Two back to back days of 0.29" of precipitation.
10/11/2017 8:00 AM T M M M M Overcast, 56° with heavy dew. 24hr: 53/70° Four drops in the gauge; not sure if it's rain or dew.
10/12/2017 8:00 AM 0.46 M M M M Overcast, 50° 24hr: 50/66° Rain had just shortly before OBS.
10/13/2017 8:00 AM T M M M M Partly cloudy, 46° with moderate dew. 24hr: 44/59°
10/14/2017 8:00 AM 0.07 M M M M Overcast, 57° 24hr: 46 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /58° Heading out the door to the gauge this morning I thought it was still raining, but when I got out into the open where the gauge is, I saw it was justing drops falling from the large maple trees. Sounds of migrating geese again yesterday.
10/15/2017 8:00 AM T M M M M Overcast, 60° 24hr: 56/65° Not sure if this is a "T" of rain or dew; totaled 4 drops.

10/30/2017 8:00 AM 4.51 M M M M Overcast, breezy, with occasional strong gusts, 42° 24hr: 40/60° Only 0.68" by nightfall (6pm SWR); the rest fell overnight. Funny how one day with a "dumper" can make a month's average look, well, average. Both basement sump-pumps went on; clamp broke on the front pump some time overnight, and woke up to a flooded basement. More rain than Sandy, but thankfully, the power is still on!
10/31/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly sunny, 39° 24hr: 38/48° Only thing in the gauge this morning were some pine needles blown in from a tree across the yard in yesterday's wind.
11/1/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast, 34° with some dew. 24hr: 31/49° October totals before the big storm = 2.09" plus the 4.51" =6.60" for 10/17. Remembering Sandy in 2012 (with 7.70" for that October total) I looked ahead at the winter we had following a dry summer and a dumper storm in October: 52.7" of snow and 79 days with snow on the ground. Time to dig out the snowboard.

Checked the radar loops and decided to report "0" and not "T."
12/6/2017 8:00 AM 0.27 0.0 M 0.0 M Cloudy, 34° 24hr: 34°/55° A few light sprinkles during the day but the heavier rain came at night. I can't believe that it's taken me 10 years to figure this one out: but instead of dumping the contents of the gauge down the drain, in the winter I'm using it to water the plants. They seem to like the pH better than tap water!

12/12/2017 8:00 AM T T M 2.0 M Overcast, 34° 24hr: 27 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /37° The proverbial "winter mix": pockets of light snow falling last night, no accumulation; this morning: rain in gauge; ice on snowboard; and remaining snow depth on the ground ranges from 1.7 - 2.2" of very wet, heavy texture. The gauge reading was just below the 0.01" line, so +/_ a drop or two this it is either a "T" or 0.01"
12/13/2017 8:00 AM 0.01 T M 0.5 M Mostly cloudy, 15° with some occasional flakes falling. 24hr: 14/39° Some periods of light rain yesterday and temps above freezing melted the snow cover back to about 50% coverage. Where patches of snow remained it ranged from 0.5" to 1.0" deep. Before ending last night, the rain changed over to snow leaving a fresh dusting this morning on everything.
12/14/2017 8:00 AM 0.12 1.5 0.12 1.6 M Very fine, light snow still falling, 21° 24hr: 15 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /24° Snow seems to be winding down now. Yesterday's temps were too cold to melt any of the remaining snow on the ground, but the strong winds must have evaporated some of it. Before this new round of snow started, we still had approx. 40% of the ground still covered.
12/15/2017 8:00 AM T T M 0.7 M Cloudy, 13° 24hr: 11/28° Have no idea when the scant trace of snow in the gauge occurred. Snow on Ground is an average from measurements ranging from 0.5" - 0.9" Snowpack is 100%.
12/16/2017 8:00 AM 0.05 0.5 0.05 1.6 M Sunny, 20° 24hr: 13 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /24° Fine light snow all day beginning at 1:30pm and continuing until early evening. Not often that the S:W ratio is exactly 10:1 AND the snowboard and the gauge reading are identical.
12/17/2017 8:00 AM T T M 1.4 M Overcast, 28° 24hr: 20 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /30° Still 100% coverage with average of 1.4" of snow remaining. The "T" occurred with a brief period of light snow flurries during the late afternoon. Not visible on the snowboard but on one side of the bottom of the gauge.
12/18/2017 8:00 AM T T M 1.2 M Cloudy, 31° 24hr: 28/34° So few flakes in the bottom of the gauge this morning that they could almost be counted individually. Still 100% snow coverage. Both during the day and at night heard flocks of geese flying overhead this weekend. Lake is almost 100% frozen over.
12/19/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Cloudy, 39° 24hr: 31 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /41° Wow! Amazing how the snow disappeared overnight! Went from 100% coverage yesterday, to a lawn-full of paw prints leaving open spots by evening, to gone on the sunny side of the house. The other side still has approx 50% coverage.

12/25/2017 8:00 AM 0.26 1.7 0.26 1.7 0.26 Mostly cloudy, 29° 24hr: 27/37° Snow began just before 8pm. A thin layer of frozen sleet pellets on the outside of the gauge this morning. SWE of gauge contents and snowboard identical. Took meausurements at the usual 8am but not reporting until 9:30am and the wind has really picked up in that time. A White Christmas!
12/26/2017 8:00 AM T T M 0.9 M Sunny & cold, 16° 24hr: 16/30° Usually the temps rise when the sun comes up, but not this morning. A few flurries yesterday, no additional accumulation. The snow cover didn't blow around a lot in yesterday's winds, probably due to the sleet mixed in from the day before's snow.
12/27/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.1 M Cloudy, 13° 24hr: 10/23° Covered the small hole in the ice in our pond above the bubbler with a styrofoam box, to keep it open through these very cold temps. 100% snow coverage. Today's measurement of 1.1" is a little higher than yesterday's 0.9" without any additional snow. So yesterday's measurement must not have been as "representative" as I'd thought. Today I took 3 measurements from around the yard, the average being 1.1"
12/28/2017 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.0 M Sunny, 5° 24hr: 5/20° Still 100% snow coverage, averaging 1". I've seen rabbit prints in the snow since this snow fell, but this morning they are kicking back the snow in places trying to get to the grass under it. We've added a suet feeder to the cylinder feeder with sunflower seeds; both are going fast.
12/29/2017 7:45 AM T T M 1.0 M Very fine, light snow, 7° 24hr: 5/14° A very light dusting of new snow on top of the 100% existing snowpack. Melted snow in the gauge = a single drop. Today and yesterday's 5° exceed last winter's coldest days of 6° on 1/9/17 & 3/5/17. The cold exceeded the ability of the pond bubbler to keep a hole in the ice open, despite covering with an insulating box of styrofoam. Poor fish!

1/2/2018 8:00 AM T T M 1.5 M Sunny, 6° 24hr: 0° [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /15° Have no idea when this tiny bit of snow arrived; a few flakes were swirled up against one side of the gauge. Easy to miss. Took a glove off to swipe it with my finger to be sure it was snow and not frost.
1/3/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.4 M Sunny, 5° 24hr: 5/22° Was hoping it would be a bit warmer, as there was a milky cloud cover for much of the night. The moon was bright and casting beautiful shadows of the trees on the snow, but only the brightest stars were visible. Getting hard to find undisturbed places to measure the snow with all the dog prints all over our yard.
1/4/2018 8:00 AM 0.03 0.1 0.03 1.4 M Very fine snow, 17° 24hr: 6° [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /31° The snow hadn't started yet at 5am. 10th straight day with below freezing temperatures. Snow-cover has also remained even on places where it usually melts first: roofs.
1/5/2018 8:00 AM 0.44 3.5 0.43 5.5 M Sunny, 2° 24hr: 1/19° "Low confidence" in the snow measurements today; by the ridge-line patterns on the snowboard, some snow was blown off it. There was so much blowing snow around the yard, that even avoiding drifted or blown clear areas, the five "representative" sample areas that I measured ranged from 5 - 8" with no two measurements the same. Some small limbs down. Since the winds didn't pick up until near the end of the snowfall, I'm assuming that the gauge amount is pretty close. So grateful that the power stayed on!
1/6/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 4.0 M Sunny, gusty winds, 1° 24hr: 1/11° 12th straight day temps did not get above freezing. Snow on Ground is even harder to measure this morning than it was yesterday! A LOT of drifting and blowing around, even re-covering the snowboard when we had no additional new snow. 4.0" is my best guess based on three sample locations that seemed "representative." But like yesterday, the 3 numbers were dramatically different.
1/7/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 3.5 M Sunny, -2° with occasional gusts. 24hr: -3 /8° First below zero day this winter. Again, another day of strong winds blew around the snow a lot. Re-covered the snow-board even though there was no fresh snow. Gave up chasing our large kitchen step pots with greens around the yard. After the wind stops I'll go find them and put them back. This is our dog's first experience with below zero days; brought her in and dipped her paws in a pan of warm water, both to heat them up and remove all the road salt the town has laid down. It is too cold for the stuff to melt the ice and snow.
1/8/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 4.0 0.84 Cloudy, 17° 24hr: -2° [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /17° After taking the core sample and coming inside, realized that the snow depth of 4.0" is a half inch more that yesterday's with no new snowfall. It's really, really, a challenge to find a flat, representative place to measure the snow-pack. At leas the wind has stopped further blowing it around.
1/9/2018 8:00 AM 0.01 T M 4.0 M Sunny, 26° 24hr: 17 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /28° The trifecta of winter precipitation yesterday mid-afternoon: started as freezing rain, then sleet for a short time, ending with snow. The thick glaze under the dusting of snow on the snowboard made depth impossible to measure, so reporting a "T."
1/10/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 3.7 M Clear, 14° 24hr: 14/40° Beautiful quarter moon. Yesterday afternoon ended a 15 day stretch of below freezing days.

1/12/2018 8:00 AM 0.09 0.0 M T M Raining, 52° 24hr: 36 [yesterday a.m. reset] /52° Wow. The snowpack really disappeared fast. This morning only 20% of the ground still has snow, up to 1" deep. The fog last night was impressive.
1/13/2018 8:00 AM 1.96 0.0 M 0.0 M Partly cloudy, 21° with occasional very gusty winds. 24hr: 21/58° A 31° drop between yesterday morning's reading and today's. Power flickered off twice last night around 10pm. Precip seems to have ended before the cold blast came. Couldn't get the gauge off the post. Had to go in a get a pitcher of warm water to pour on the brackets to release the frozen gauge without spilling the contents.

2/1/2018 8:00 AM T T M 0.0 M Overcast, 30° 24hr: 11 [yesterday a.m. reset] /30° Some snow late evening or overnight: a small amount was banked up against one side of the gauge this morning. Didn't even result in a single melted drop.
2/2/2018 8:00 AM 0.27 1.9 0.23 1.9 0.23 Sunny, 19° 24hr: 19/41° Rain began around 5pm & changed over to snow earlier than forecast; town trucks were plowing the roads before midnight. Ice layer from frozen slush underneath the snow made it hard to get a core from the ground, so the readings are from the snowboard. Site elevation = 1,060 ft.
2/3/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.6 M Sunny, 10° 24hr: 8/24° A mystery at the gauge this morning: I knew that it had not snowed yesterday. But this morning ice pellets (one almost quarter sized) in the gauge. Realized that it was snow/ice blown down from the large maples and the power lines yesterday in the roaring winds. It sounded like tiny rocks were hitting the house most of the day. I'm surprised because the gauge is positioned pretty far from the closest tree. 100% snow cover that, when walked on, makes that squeaky sound under your boots that only happens on really cold mornings.
2/4/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.0 M Overcast, 25° 24hr: 10 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /27° 100% snow cover with depths ranging from 1.0 to 1.2"
2/5/2018 8:00 AM 0.71 0.5 M 0.7 M Mostly cloudy, windy, 28° Temperature just dropped 3° since coming in from the gauge and skies are clearing. Gauge frozen to the post, with contents half frozen. Snow started 11:30am and snowed on and off most of the afternoon. Then it changed to a mix of rain, freezing rain, and must have ended with graupel, because this morning there is a light coating of small white pellets on top of the frozen slush. First morning this winter that I've needed my Yak-Trax to get to the gauge. Snow depth measured from the small, uncleared portion of the snowboard.
2/6/2018 8:00 AM T T M 0.4 M Overcast, 21° 24hr: 13/27° A few snow flurries yesterday morning, nothing in the gauge this morning. 100% "snow" (really ice) coverage, now down to aprox 0.4" Measurement taken from the uncleared part of snowboard.
2/7/2018 7:25 AM T T M 0.4 M Light sleet, 23° 24hr: 22/33° Fine sleet had just begun; wouldn't have know it if I wasn't outside walking to the gauge. Fine pellets in the bottom of the gauge. But the time I was inside writing up this report it had changed over to moderate snow, covering cars and roads. Light breeze from the south.
2/8/2018 8:00 AM 0.81 1.6 M 2.0 M Partly cloudy, 19° 24hr: 17/34° Measured snow @ 11:40am when it started changing over to sleet: 1.6" Impossible getting a clean measurement off the snowboard, even using the 1lb metal coffee can instead of the outer gauge (thank you NJ-HN-7!) to pound through the ice and frozen snow. Too much ice left behind. Measuring the snow on the ground required making a "starter hole" with a screwdriver and then inserting the metal ruler. Depth ranged from 2.4" - 0.9" so I'm reporting the average of all samples: 2.0" Truly a Yak-Trac day!
2/9/2018 8:00 AM T T M 2.0 M Cloudy, 17° 24hr: 15/30° 2" of frozen slush remains all over the yard. Heard a high-flying flock of Canadian Geese yesterday afternoon, honking and flying SOUTH!

3/3/2018 8:00 AM 1.16 8.2 1.06 8.1 1.06 Cloudy, 29° 24hr: 27/32° The area around the snow board was partially blown clear during yesterday's strong winds (only 6.8") so I took melted value from a representative core on the lawn (8.1"). I had measured at 5:30pm last evening as the snow was stopping and it was 8.2" which I'm reporting. Needed to swap out the gauge at noon because it was encased in snow all around the outside, and I couldn't see if it was going to overtop. SWE of 5.4" of snow at noon was 0.84". Needed to clear the heavy wet snow from the arborvitae, yews, and small trees that were bent to the ground under the weight of all the snow several times during the day. A few flickers, but power stayed on. Sump pumps still pumping every 7 minutes this morning.

3/7/2018 7:25 AM 0.23 2.3 0.21 5.7 M Snowing, 30° 24hr: 22 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /46° This snow is certainly living up to the "heavy and wet" forecast! All the shrubs and small trees that were cleaned off after Friday's storm & were starting to stand upright again are bent back over. Except for the grouping of 3 large arborvitae that I had tied together with rope yesterday afternoon; they're just tipped in toward each other.
3/8/2018 7:00 AM 1.52 12.7 M 16.5 1.98 [Reporting early, before the chunks of snow start falling out of all the trees.] Mostly sunny, 30° 24hr: 26/33° As meteorologists say: a "low confidence" in some of this report. The snow wasn't falling very hard in the morning, so I stopped watching the gauge. When I looked at 2:30pm snow was beginning to overtop it. Also noted that the snowboard, of which I had cleaned off half while taking my morning OBS at 7:30am now had even snow depth! The uncleared part SHOULD have had approx. 2.3" more snow than the cleaned off part. From that point on I just kept up with swapping out the gauge and recording SWE from it: 7:30am = 0.23", 2:30pm = 0.67", 5:45pm = 0.47", plus this morning's OBS = 0.15" for a gauge total of 1.52". Ignored the snowboard and took a core sample from an average spot in the yard. 16.5" of snow; SWE of 1.98" Sure hope this doesn't all melt fast! My brother on the other side of town is still without power since Friday and came here again last night to shower and get jugs of water.
3/9/2018 7:30 AM T T T 14.0 M Light snow, 25° 24hr: 22/39° A fresh dusting over the existing snowpack resulted in 3 drops of SWE from the gauge. Pond is re-frozen with only the small hole kept open by the bubbler. Seven nights in a row with temps in the 20°s and some people in town still without power since LAST Friday!
3/10/2018 8:00 AM T T M 12.5 M Sunny, 25° 24hr: 34/40° Several short snow flurries during the day yesterday and a really heavy snow squall moved through around 5pm. Best possible melt-off: slow and steady. Can't wait to see what's blooming under all the snow...

3/16/2018 8:00 AM T T M 11.0 M Mostly sunny, 26° 24hr: 25/44° Another light dusting of snow on all surfaces; the newspaper in the driveway was lightly covered, so it must have come through shortly before OBS. 100% snow coverage; loosing an average of an inch each day. 3/21/2018 7:45 AM T T T 8.5 M Overcast, 27° 24hr: 22/35° A light "sugar dusting" of new snow that melted down to a single drop. First sign of bears! Paw prints walking through the snow to the gauge and then veering off to climb up a low rock wall and out of our yard. In the past 10 years a few bears seem to have mistaken the gauge for a tube bird feeder. Glad this guy left it intact. [8:11am note: while writing the report and recording temperatures, light snow has begun.]
3/22/2018 8:00 AM 0.84 8.5 0.74 17.0 M Mostly cloudy, 29° 24hr: 25/30° Thankfully Nor'easter #4 was not a wind event; all snow except for a brief period in the afternoon when there were some ice pellets mixed in. Glad I swapped out the gauge with an empty one at 5pm --it would have overtopped for sure! Hard to measure a representative "Snow on Ground" location; all of the filled in footprints and prior core samples and slight drifting resulted in depths ranging between 15 - 19." I'm still using a yardstick with US measures so it's hard to measure down to a tenth of an inch. Bubbler is keeping a hole open in the pond ice & that's a real magnet for wildlife.

The morning's frozen foot prints are dicey walking through. March snow fall so far = 37.30" and has stayed on the ground despite increasing angle of the sun.

7/24/2018 8:00 AM 1.67 M M M M Overcast, 70° 24hr: 69/74° After an extremely heavy period of rain around 3pm I sent in a Significant Weather Report: 0.98" with the side yard flooded and basement sump pump on. 7/25/2018 8:00 AM 1.10 M M M M Overcast, 68° with tropical humidity continuing. 24hr: 68/77° During periods yesterday afternoon when the sun broke through it was beastly hot. 4.49" over four days, and it's not even a named tropical system.
7/26/2018 7:30 AM 1.58 M M M M Cloudy, 67° humid and still. 24hr: 67/74° Sent in a SWR at 3:20pm after a period of intense heavy rain: 0.27" 24hr total rain = 1.58" Five day rain total = 6.07" Both basement pumps still on. Ground sodden.

8/1/2018 8:00 AM 0.13 M M M M Overcast, 67° with some drops still falling off the leaves of the large maple trees. 24hr: 60/74° Wonder if August will remain in the wet pattern that we've seen in the second half of July? July total = 9.39"
8/2/2018 8:00 AM 0.26 M M M M Partly cloudy, humid, 68° 24hr: 66/80° A short period of rain yesterday morning and again after midnight.
8/3/2018 8:00 AM 0.95 M M M M Overcast, 79° 24hr: 68/78° I brought a second outer gauge with me this morning because from the house it looked like the inner gauge had overflowed (again). But it was right up to near the top: 0.95"
8/4/2018 8:00 AM 5.18 M M M M Raining, 66° 24hr: 66/77° Last night I got a flashlight to check the rain-gauge from inside. Wow! It had overflowed the inner gauge and was 1/3 of the way up the outer gauge! 2.71” at 8:30pm. Even worse our basement pump wasn’t plugged in all the way, so our front basement flooded! I sent in a Significant Weather Report. At OBS this morning (after an overnight hour and a half poweroutage + RE-flooding of the basement) we had gotten another 2.47” for a 24hr total of 5.18” Side yard flooded; was standing in several inches of water to swap out the gauges. Both pumps on continuously. A tree came down on the other side of the lake taking out power on that side around 10pm. This might be a record for the largest single day rain at this station; I've been reporting for 10 years so I'll look back through my records to see (Maybe Lee?) Wish we could share all of this with California.
8/5/2018 8:00 AM 0.15 M M M M Hazy sun, 64° 24hr: 62/78° "Left-over" rain just after OBS yesterday. Basement pumps still on. Coming home last night at 8pm Route 23 was still closed due to flooding.
