After rain ended in the evening, dense fog developed overnight. However, a cold front's passage shortly before observation flushed out the fog and brought an increasing northwesterly wind.

Rain was (obviously) heavy at times, with the temperature rising from 39 to 55ºF. Rain continues at observation, with the landscape having made the transition from drought to widespread ponding of water. Literally thousands of earthworms have been forced to seek higher ground.

On the 11th, flash flooding continued in several area low spots during the morning hours, following the previous night's deluge. However, this location (VA-SF-5) remained just east of some of the heaviest showers on the 11th, allowing standing and running water to recede during the afternoon. The high on Feb. 11 soared to 71°F, but colder air in the pre-dawn hours on the 12th has sent the current temperature tumbling into the lower 50s.

9/8/2018 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M This station got clipped by an evening thunderstorm, starting just before 6:30 pm. Lightning lingered in the eastern sky nearly until dark. Before the storm, the Sep. 7 high rose into the lower 90s; currently, it is overcast and 72ºF.
9/9/2018 7:00 AM 0.66 M M M M Cooler air moved in on a northerly breeze, starting in the late morning of Sep. 8. Under cloudy skies, the temperature fell from a high in the upper 70s to a current reading in the lower 60s. There was a late-morning thunderstorm on the 8th, which produced about one-tenth of an inch, but the bulk of the rain fell in the pre-dawn hours on the 9th. Rain continues at observation.

9/18/2018 7:00 AM 1.03 M M M M Effects from the remnants of Florence reached their peak on Sep. 17. There was a little bit of rain in the morning, but the bulk of the precipitation fell in an afternoon blast that briefly caused flash flooding. Otherwise, it was a cloudy, exceptionally humid day, with a high in the upper 70s. At observation, it is a sticky 75°F.
9/19/2018 7:00 AM 0.35 M M M M The final burst of moisture from the remnants of Florence fell in the early afternoon on Sep. 18, followed by partial clearing by sunset. The temperature reached the lower 80s both before and after the rain fell. The overnight low dipped into the mid-60s, with the stars visible through a layer of dense ground fog.

9/21/2018 7:00 AM T M M M M Sep. 20 was warm and humid with a high in the mid-80s. Skies were partly to mostly cloudy during the day, but clouds thickened overnight, with a few sprinkles prior to observation. The low temperature was 69°F.
9/22/2018 7:00 AM 0.28 M M M M On Sep. 21, there was a quick shot of morning rain -- done by 9:30 am -- followed by partial clearing in the late afternoon. The high reached the lower 80s; the current temperature, under a partly cloudy sky, is 71ºF.
9/23/2018 7:00 AM 1.33 M M M M It was a busy weather period. Sep. 22 started out warm and sticky, but a northerly breeze brought in lower humidity as the day progressed. The high reached 80ºF under partly to mostly sunny skies. Just after darkness fell, periods of rain developed. At observation, the temperature has fallen to 60ºF, with heavy rain.

9/26/2018 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M On Sep. 25, early-morning drizzle and sprinkles yielded to warm, humid conditions with a high in the mid-80s. There was also a fleeting, late-afternoon shower. The overnight low fell only to 69°F, with a little bit of fog and light drizzle developing before daybreak. (Special note: I'm extremely saddened to report the passing of dedicated CoCoRaHS observer, WV-ML-3, following a brief illness. WV-ML-3, who happened to be my beloved uncle, wrote this on Sep. 17 in his final report: "Unfortunately because of circumstances [beyond] my control, this may be my last report".)
9/27/2018 7:00 AM 0.06 M M M M Sep. 26 was very warm and steamy, with a high in the upper 80s. A quick-hitting thunderstorm struck just after dark. Overnight, there were a few more drops of rain, along with the development of a northerly breeze. The current temperature has fallen into the mid-60s.
9/28/2018 7:00 AM 0.59 M M M M It was a cool observation period, with temperatures in the upper 50s and lower 60s. Rain was sporadic and light most of the time, but there were a few heavier showers overnight, starting around midnight. At observation on Sep. 28, it is overcast, 59ºF.
9/29/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sep. 28 brought dry weather (finally) and some welcomed sunshine, with a high of 77 degrees F. The sky was a colorful mix, as rich blues shared the palette with white streaks of cirrus and dark, ragged tufts of cumulus. Following a brilliant sunset, the overnight low dipped to 57 degrees F.
