August 2018 was an extremely dry month, with seasonable temps, and about one-third of the month affected by moderate to dense smoke from wildfires mostly in B.C., some from central WA. The smoke moderated temps on certain days. Eight days reached into the 80s, about seven days only reached into the 60s, the remainder were in the 70s. Total rainfall for August: 0.02" (my 21-yr ave. for August is 0.83", JG's 39-yr ave for Lopez is 0.82", and the 30-yr ave by PRISM for this location is 0.89"). Wildfire risk remains extreme. U.S. Drought Monitor website erroneously list this area as only "abnormally dry" and not in moderate or severe drought. Many deciduous trees have dropped some or considerable leaves; even some coniferous trees have turned brown (or the top third of the trees have turned brown). Fieldwork on Orcas Island two days ago discovered a large grove of Garry oak (Oregon white oak) with withered, dry leaves. Gauge-measured ET for August 2018: 2.50", lower than usual due to cloudy days and smoky days. |
