Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/1/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another cool, 53 degrees, clear, and a little windy day with sunshine. There are showers out in Iowa, but it appears that they will go and stay to our north again. The beans around here are all almost yellow, and the corn is starting to dry also. My neighbor is afraid that his beans will not be ripe by the first frost which, if early, could come any time now. When I was a kid, many moons ago, we always had snow at Thanksgiving, now we're lucky if it snows by Christmas. Spring always came my St Pat's day, now it comes in May! The seasons have definitely shifted in the past 60+ years that I can remember.
10/2/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is overcast with a temp of 59 degrees on the way to the 70's. There are some storms to our west in Iowa, but doubtful that they will reach us. More rain for the next two days.
10/3/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another clear and sunny day with a temp of 64 degrees on the way to perhaps 80. Rain expected late Thurs into Friday.
10/4/2017 7:00 AM 0.23 M M M M Today is more seasonable with a temp of 54 degrees under a partly cloudy sky. We did get almost a quarter of inch of rain, some in the afternoon and some around 8PM. It definitely feels like fall out there!
10/5/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A cooler, 57 degrees, and overcast day. Feels more like it should in October. Yesterday was beautiful after it cleared off and the sun came out. We have had many such days in the past few weeks.
10/6/2017 7:00 AM 0.23 M M M M
10/7/2017 7:00 AM 1.10 M M M M At last we have some meaningful rainfall! It began raining yesterday PM and continued all night at a steady rate. It is still raining this morning! Things are greening up again, although it has not gotten very brown around here in spite of the lack of moisture. Perhaps the very wet spring and early summer had the ground pretty well saturated.
10/8/2017 7:00 AM 0.15 M M M M Today is going to be a perfect fall day with sunshine in a clear blue October sky. The temp was a seasonable 52 degrees.
10/9/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yesterday was a picture perfect fall day with October Blue skies, bright sunshine, and temps into the low 70's. Today will be more of the same except cooler. The rest of the week will be more seasonable with high temps into the 60's. There were frost and freeze warnings for northern counties. It can't stay this way forever, but it would be nice if it would! Not looking forward to winter!
10/10/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is much cooler and mostly cloudy with a temp of 46 degrees. Yesterday was another perfect fall day, but a bit windy.
10/12/2017 7:00 AM T M M M M Much warmer today at 54 degrees. It appears that it had rained, but no rain in the gauge. Everything is very wet and the trees are dripping water, yet not rain in the gauge. Seems very strange! Today is overcast, windy, and gloomy.
10/13/2017 7:00 AM T M M M M Yesterday remained overcast and damp with occasional drizzle or mist, but not enough to measure. Today looks to be more of the same. The AM temp was 55 degrees under an overcast sky. The bright blue October sky has now gone grey and dull. Looks like November, but the temps have remained warmer.
10/14/2017 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M Another gloomy, overcast day with a temp of 55 degrees. It drizzled most of the afternoon, but did not produce much rain in the gauge again. It is supposed to clear off and become very chilly, perhaps our first frost, on Sun. night. It is nice to see so much green here yet, but that will change with frost.
10/15/2017 7:00 AM 1.20 M M M M
10/16/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The AM temp was 37 degrees, the coldest so far this season. It is a pretty start to the day with bright sunshine in a clear, blue October sky.
10/17/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No watches or warnings today! It is going to be a beautiful fall day with warm temps, starting at 47 degrees, and going up into the low 70's. The rest of the week is supposed to be warmer and sunny. Of course the rain will arrive on the week end.
10/18/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yesterday was a beautiful fall day with temps into the 70's, clear blue skies, and low humidity. More of the same expected for today.
10/19/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful fall day with warm temps and bright sunshine. It is supposed to last through Friday, then rain on Sat. and colder on Sunday. I guess this is what we used to call "Indian Summer", but I have not heard that term for a few years It isn't that unusual to have a very warm spell in late Oct. or early Nov. before it turns cold for the season. I have some photos of us way back when, taken on Halloween, when we were not wearing a coat or sweater.
10/20/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M This will probably be the last warm day until April. Temps are expected to reach perhaps high 70's or maybe 80 degrees this PM. The AM temp was 52 degrees under a clear blue sky with bright sunshine.
10/21/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is very warm and overcast with a temp of 61 degrees. This will definitely be the last day of warm temps until spring!
10/22/2017 7:00 AM 0.53 M M M M After a dry September, October has been rather wet. The mini drought around here has been declared over. The rain overnight has brought down most of the remaining leaves, and things are looking quite baron now. There are still leaves on the Oaks and aspens but everything else is bare. We have not yet has a killing frost, but that will probably happen in the next week. Today's temp was still warm at 52 degrees.
10/23/2017 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Today is a typical November day in late October with an overcast sky and a temp of 42 degrees. It managed to drizzle most of the day yesterday and was rather miserable to be outside.
10/24/2017 7:00 AM 0.15 M M M M Very windy today with a temp of 44 degrees under an overcast sky. A brief shower in late afternoon produced a little rain in the gauge. The real cold is expected to hit tomorrow and Friday with our first frost of the season.
10/26/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is shaping up to be a beautiful one with clear skies, no wind an d sunshine. The AM temp was 40 degrees, no frost was predicted for this area so things are still green and there are a few blooming flowers left.
10/27/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today the temps finally dipped into the 30's at 36 degrees. With a heavily overcast sky and the cold temp, it really does feel like November. This will be a good day to stay inside and catch up on my neglected house work since I have been away for the past two days. How did I ever work full time with two sons and two houses, and still manage to keep things together?? I guess I was much younger then!
10/28/2017 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M Today is overcast again with a temp of 35 degrees. It rained and snowed much of the day yesterday. Some of the snow showers were evident, but none stuck to the ground. There was measurable snow not too far to our north in Vernon Co. and northward. Far northern WI had up to 8" of snow had the Twin Cities in MH had 2". We are still dealing with piles and piles of fallen leaves.
10/29/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Last night we saw our first killing frost of the season although the plants next to the house did not freeze. It is good to see the sun for a change in a clear blue sky. If it stays sunny it will probably warm up a bit, enough to walk the dog without a sweater. He has a very short coat, not like the pugs that have a double coat, so cannot withstand the cold as well as they do.
10/30/2017 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M A mostly sunny day with a few fluffy clouds floating in a blue sky. The AM temp was much warmer at 37 degrees. It rained a little yesterday around 6PM, but did not last long. The plants are mostly dead now but the grass is bright green.
10/31/2017 7:00 AM T M M M M It did not get as cold as predicted overnight. The AM temp was just at the freezing mark at 32 degrees under a mostly overcast sky with a few peeks of blue sky showing through. Today is supposed to remain colder than normal with the threat of rain or snow showers again.
11/1/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another gloomy overcast day with a temp at the freezing mark again. Rain is predicted for today as well. Some sunshine would be nice, but after all, it is November now, the gloomiest month of the year. This year it may see more white on the landscape as it is supposed to be a wetter winter.
11/2/2017 7:00 AM 0.13 M M M M Today is very dark and dreary with thick fog and what feel like a few rain drops. The temp is 10 degrees warmer than the past two days at 42 degrees on the way to perhaps 50. The rest of the week appears to be on the warmer side in the high 40's. It drizzled almost all day yesterday and remained overcast. Typical for November!
11/3/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M There was a strange orange flow in the eastern sky this AM, the sun, which has been hiding for the better part of a week. The AM temp was a normal 31 degrees. Today looks like it will be a beautiful one if the sun stays out and there is little or no wind. There is a ton of leaves to be mulched, windows to be washed, etc.
11/4/2017 7:00 AM 0.11 M M M M Another dreary, dark and damp day with a temp of 41 degrees. Yesterday started out sunny, but ended up mostly cloudy, cool, and damp again.
11/5/2017 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M Today is another overcast, drizzly day with a starting temp of 44 degrees. Yesterday was rainy and overcast producing little moisture in the gauge. I am beginning to wonder if the sun will ever shine again! It is supposed to clear off later today, and the rest of the week will be cool and mostly sunny. Time will tell!!
11/6/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today the temp broke the 30 degrees mark at just 28 degrees. This week is supposed to be cold, and Friday it may stay near the 30 degree mark. Perhaps it will dry out enough to mulch some of the many piles of leaves. I also have a lot of spring bulbs to plant, since last year I waited too long and the ground froze so hard I could not dig the holes. I see we still have a chipmunk running around, but I have never had problems with the critters digging up the bulbs, however we do have a mole that is capable of digging up almost anything. It has made huge tunnels all over the yard. The field looks like a war zone.
11/7/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is a bit warmer at 32 degrees, but overcast again. The sun did come out for a while yesterday PM, but it did not warm up very much. I nearly froze in the morning cleaning the junk out of the RAV so it could go to the garage in Madison for repairs to the heating ducts as the result of so many mice living there for probably 11 years. Not a good idea to go into the winter without a defroster and little heat!
11/8/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M There was much frost on the pumpkin this AM with a temp of just 24 degrees, everything was white, Some snow expected tonight and Friday night there could be at least 1/2" on the ground. Way too early for this! We haven't had a very cold November in a number of years, so I suppose we are due. Snow for Thanksgiving?? Last year was very warm, as was the fall.
11/9/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another windy, overcast day with a temp of 33 degrees. No snow overnight here, but there could be some for the weekend. Actually next week may have temps into the lower 50's. There are still leaves to mulch and windows to wash.
11/10/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today was by far the coldest on so far with a temp of just 15 degrees and a gusty north west wind making it feel even colder. hope the predictions for a colder and wetter winter do not come true. Brother in law, who lives in Mosinee what we call "up north" said it was zero there!!
11/11/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Much warmer today at 30 degrees. Yesterday the temp never got above freezing and with a nasty wind, it was very unpleasant to be outside. There are a few rain drops in the air now at 9AM as predicted. If it gets colder there will probably be some snow as well.
11/12/2017 7:00 AM 0.07 M M M M Another miserable, foggy, and drizzly day with a temp of 34 degrees under a heavily overcast sky. It rained most of the afternoon yesterday, but only a thick mist and drizzle that produced little moisture on the ground. There was some icing on the deck. Crawford Co did spray deicer on the Co road in anticipation of ice forming on the roadway.
11/13/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today we see the sun for a change although the clouds are moving in now. The temp was 25 degrees which is probably normal for this date. We have not yet seen a measurable snow fall. That could happen this week.
11/14/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M After a beautiful sunny morning, the clouds rolled in ant and the day turned overcast and gloomy again. More of the same today, although the temp rose overnight to 38 degrees this AM, it felt much colder due to the cloudy and humid conditions. I had hoped to plant some of the many spring bulbs I have purchased today, but it looks like it could rain again. Because there is a very active mole in the yard I am waiting until the last minute to plant. Last year I waited so long that the ground was frozen so solid that even a spade could not break through it.
11/15/2017 7:00 AM 0.06 M M M M Yet another dark and gloomy overcast day, but it appears to be getting lighter. The good thing is the temp is a warm 45 degrees, perhaps on the way to the 50's. It drizzled much of the afternoon yesterday, and there was thick fog on the hill tops when I went into Boscobel at 2:00. They were still working on US 61, and there were two flag men whose life I felt was in danger because they were very hard to see, and knowing how many distracted drivers there are around here I felt they were definitely at risk.
11/16/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
11/17/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another gloomy day with a warm temp of 36 degrees. Yesterday was supposed to be sunny, but turned out to be just like the rest. The cold is supposed to return for Sunday, but next week should be nice with some sunshine and warm temps.
11/18/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
11/19/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Colder today with a starting temp of 23 degrees on the way to maybe 40. Tomorrow is supposed to warm up, then the rest of the week will be colder due to a cold front due to arrive by Tuesday. So much for a warm week. Perhaps tomorrow will be a good one to plant my bulbs.
11/20/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The temp today is at the freezing point, 32 degrees, but the sun is shining. Yesterday never got above the mid 30's, and with a stiff breeze it felt quite cold. If it stays sunny, which it is supposed to do today, it might be a nice day. It has been gloomy for so long, a sunny day is a treat!
11/21/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is still warm at 35 degrees, but very windy and mostly overcast making it feel much colder. Yesterday turned out to be the best day we've had for quite a while. The temp got close to 50 degrees, but the sun left a little after noon and it remained cloudy the rest of the day.
11/22/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is cold at 17 degrees, but there is bright sunshine in a clear blue sky for a change.
11/23/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today dawned bright and beautiful again. It did cloud over again yesterday, but that awful wind had died down, and although it was quite cold, the morning was nice. Today is warmer, 31 degrees at 8AM with little wind.
11/24/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today will be another beautiful one with a starting temp of 44 degrees on the way to the 50's with a clear blue sky and little wind. Good day to plant the bulbs I have been trying to plant for weeks!
11/25/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another unseasonably warm day with a temp of 39 degrees under a clear blue sky and bright sunshine. Yesterday we broke the high temp record at 65 degrees. It was a beautiful late November day. Today won't be as warm, but still very nice for this time of year in SW Wisconsin .
11/26/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A little cooler this AM with a temp of 26 degrees under a cloudless blue sky and sunshine. Hard to believe we have had almost a week's worth of sunny days after all the gloom we had for so long. No snow in the forecast either.
11/27/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is a it warmer at 34 degrees with bright sunshine in a clear blue sky. According to NWS yesterday, today's temp may reach into the 60's again.
11/29/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is a bit cooler at 28 degrees, but there is bright sunshine in a clear blue sky. This is supposed to last the entire week! So nice after all the gloomy weather we had most of November. We got many of the leaves in the yard mulched and the flower bed cleaned off. Progress! We have burned through almost all of one wood pile, and winter is not here yet. I guess the LP will have to do the rest of the cold season!
11/30/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today will be another beautiful one with a starting temp of 39 degrees, pretty warm for the last day of November. It is to remain this way until later in next week when the high temp is predicted to be just 32 degrees.
12/1/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It is a little cooler today at 28 degrees, still above normal for the 1st day of December. The sky is a bright blue with a few fluffy white clouds floating around, some are the remains of the many jet contrails that are there. I fear we will pay the price for this beautiful stretch of warm and sunny late fall weather. They say the jet stream is going to move south bringing with it cold Canadian and Artic air. Can hardly wait. They are talking about the Polar Vortex coming back as it was a few years ago when we had what seemed like weeks of very cold weather.
12/2/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yet another mild day at 32 degrees with bright sunshine in a clear blue sky. This may be the last of the warm days until spring as a front will move in and the jet stream will go south bringing in cold air. We could see some snow by Sunday night. Go BADGERS in the play off game tonight.
12/3/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another sunny and fairly warm, at 29 degrees, day. Tomorrow the temps may reach the 60,s, then the cold arrives and the rest of the week will barely make it into the 30's. After all, it is December now and the weather is supposed to be cold in Wisc. in winter. We have become spoiled this past week, and will now pay the price, especially if the predicted Poler Vortex arrives for the remainder of the winter.
12/4/2017 7:00 AM 0.34 M M M M We had the first rain here for about a month between 1 and 2AM accompanied by some thunder and lightning. Not that common for this time of year either. In face, a year ago we had our first measurable snowfall, a very wet and heavy one, also quite rare for December. It was a mild 51 degrees this AM which is also unusual for December. The cold will arrive later today with strong winds, perhaps 50mph and more rain. We need the rain, but can do without the wind. This year has seen strong wind often. When you live on a hill as we do, it can be very unpleasant.
12/6/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is sunny and cool with a temp of 22 degree which is probably about normal for this time of year. It is great to see the sun in a clear blue sky. Saw the moon last night as it was rising in the east, just beautiful. One advantage of living in the middle of no where, although while living in a Chicago Suburb, I could still see the sky and it wasn't that bad.
12/7/2017 7:00 AM M 0.2 M M M The first measurable snowfall of the season fell sometime between 7PM and 10PM. It seemed strange to see the ground white today. The sun is shining in a clear blue sky and the temp a cold 18 degrees meaning the snow is going to stick around for a while. The ground is mostly frozen, at least some of the wood was frozen down when I filled the wheelbarrow yesterday. Some was covered in frost. I'm not ready for at least 4 more months of this!
12/8/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another cold, 20 degrees, day with bright sunshine in a cloudless blue sky. The moon was beautiful and huge as it rose on the east. Today it is hanging in the sky over the parking lot. It was full on the 3rd, so a piece of it is missing now, but it is still beautiful. I love the crescent phase which will occur in a few days.
12/9/2017 7:00 AM M 0.3 M 0.5 M It snowed a bit last night, but nothing close to the 1"that was predicted for this area. The temp is a mild 25 degrees and snow is beginning to fall again. The light and fluffy variety because the air is so dry. It was snowing like crazy at 10PM but must have stooped soon after than. I don't have a snow board yet, and hubby already swept the sidewalk, so will have to do some math to figure out today's amount. Time to finish the Christmas cards, yes I'm old fashioned and still sens a few to close relatives and friends which seen to become fewer every year. I think I'm down to 20 or so now. I printed my labels last PM, and still have to type (yes, you can read it) a note. I bought the cards last summer from a lady in Florida who does "PUG" cards that are absolutely adorable!
12/10/2017 7:00 AM T T M 0.5 M It must have snowed a little during the night leading to a trace amount visible on the sidewalk. The AM temp was 20 degrees under a mostly overcast sky.
12/11/2017 7:00 AM M 0.2 M M M We were predicted to receive one inch of snow overnight, but only got 0,2". That's OK, we can still drive down the road and don't have to shovel. A broom does a good job on the sidewalk. The AM temp was 26 degrees under a mostly, a few clouds in the east, clear blue sky.
12/12/2017 7:00 AM M 1.8 M M M The snow started to fall a little after noon, and continued for about 2 hours . At first it was huge, heavy, wet flakes, then tapered off to normal flakes. There was some rain toward the end, bud don't know how much. It did clear off toward evening and got very cold overnight with the AM temp reading just 13 degrees, the coldest so far this season. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas around here!
12/13/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Much warmer today at 27 degrees under am overcast sky. We did not get the 1" or snow predicted to fall overnight, but it feels like it could snow anytime. Have not looked at the radar or the NWS web page so really don't know. The predictions of the weather men on TV have been sooo wrong lately.
12/15/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No snow again overnight or so far today. There are a few flakes in the air, but don't seem to hit the ground. The AM temp was a warmer 25 degrees under an overcast sky.
12/16/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It almost feels like spring today with a warm temp just two degrees below freezing and an almost clear, blue sky and sunshine. If it weren't almost winter, I would be hopeful for an early spring, but we all know it cannot last.
12/17/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It is warm again today at 31 degrees under an overcast sky. Some of our snow has melted, but the ground is still white. Thankfully the road is mostly bare, at least the parts that are dark where the heat of the sun has melted the snow, so we are able to drive up to the house. That makes it much easier when we have groceries or bird seed to unload. 50 # bags are not easy to lift for a 68, almost 69 yr old. Someday we will not be able to do it anymore, then what?? No plans to move any time soon, but that could change if we have health issues. So far asthma, glaucoma, hypertension and diabetes have not stopped him!
12/18/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is a carbon copy of yesterday except it is just at the freezing mark. If winter weather really comes, we will be shocked, even tho the first day of winter is just 4 days away. The little snow on the ground is melting a little every day. We could definitely use the moisture!
12/19/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today will probably be the last warm day until spring. It was a balmy 37 degrees under a partly overcast sky with some blue patches showing through. Next week is predicted to have temps in the low single digits and maybe some significant snowfall. Not ready for that, but it is reality for winter in Wisconsin. Perhaps I should take up x-country skiing again, but at my age I would probably break a leg or worse. At least that made winter more fun.
12/20/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M ^Today is overcast with a temp of 27 degrees. Feels cold compared to the mild temps of the past few days. It is downhill from now one. The week end is supposed to be cold, but Christmas, Monday, could see temps below zero with highs in the low single digits. That is really cold. I did bring in the tube from the rain gauge, but have yet to put out the snow board. I remember when my older son was a baby, there were mornings when the car would not start and we used to take the battery in the house to keep it warm. The temp then was -30 degrees for several days. That baby is now 54 years old! How time flies.
12/21/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It felt much colder today, but the thermometer read 26 degrees. Even the dogs rushed back into the house after completing their mission which is unusual. Wait until it is below 0! I'm not looking forward to what's ahead for us in a day or two.
12/22/2017 7:00 AM T T M M M There were a few flakes in the air this AM when I went out around 0730, and it gradually increased to a small amount later. There was a thin layer of snow on the sidewalk which has increased to probably a few tenths by 0945. Our chances of having a white Christmas are thin at best. From the radar it appears as if the snow has already passed, and perhaps we will see the sun later.
12/23/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Colder today at 21 degrees under an overcast sky with a brisk NW wind blowing. Not very nice out there. It is predicted to become sunny later which will help. No plans to leave the property over the next few days. Doesn't look hopeful for a white Christmas either, not that I care! No sled or skis from Santa this year!
12/24/2017 7:00 AM T T M M M Woke up to some snow falling. The sidewalk is covered with a thin coat of new snow. Since it is past 0700, I will report a trace, but it comes and goes as the morning progresses. The AM temp was a cool 19 degrees. Tomorrow is supposed to be in the deep freeze with wind chills as low as -10 degrees. This is supposed to last through next Wednesday. Can hardly wait!!
12/25/2017 7:00 AM M 0.8 M M M It snowed off and on most of the day yesterday, but only had less than an inch to show for it. Today is bitterly cold with a starting temp of just 8 degrees. There is a breeze, but not as strong as anticipated, making the wind chills somewhere near -19 degrees here and closer to -35 degrees up north. Plan to stay inside as much as possible.
12/26/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Both of our fine digital thermometers one on the east side and one on the north, failed to read the outdoor temp today, however the closest NWS reading was -7 at Bell Center, probably about 7 miles away. There was thick frost on the one single pane window we installed in the A frame probably in 1976, and should be replaced.. The dogs did not linger out side either. The sun is shining in a clear blue sky. Something to be greatful for on a frigid winter day.
12/27/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Thermometers still not working! NWS temp at -6 degrees. bit the wind chills are in the -20 degree range around here. Some snow expected tonight and tomorrow. It appears that we are in a 2 to 3 inch spot on the map. The ground is covered here, so we don't really need snow now! The wood pile is almost exhausted, so it better warm up soon. Just hope the 800 gal of LP lasts until March or whenever the road is passable for a big truck!
12/28/2017 7:00 AM T M M M M Woke up to a little snow on the sidewalk and a few flakes in the air. The temp is still very cold, 5 degrees according to NWS in Lacrosse. Neither of our digital thermometers is working in spite of new batteries in the outside units, and a new one in one of the inside ones. Time for an old fashioned one!
12/29/2017 7:00 AM M 0.7 M M M It is difficult to measure snow when a small amount falls every day over the entire day. Yesterday it snowed in the morning, then stopped and then resumed later in the afternoon. The closest amount I can measure, not having a snow board and the sidewalk was shoveled many times. was less than an inch. It is still cold, and without a working outside thermometer, difficult to measure the outside temp as well. The NWS reported +8 degrees this PM, and predicted severe cold again for the week end and into next week. We seem to be in a pattern of very cold weather for perhaps two or three weeks. Wind chills for the nest few days predicted to be -30 degrees or colder.
12/30/2017 7:00 AM M 0.3 M M M More cold and snow.
12/31/2017 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful, but frigid, winter day with a bright sun in a clear blue sky devoid of clouds. The only problem was the -2.5 degree temp with a nasty NW wind blowing. Yes, we did get one of the thermometers to register after two sets of new batteries and a bit of contact cleaning. Tonight is predicted to be the coldest yet and no relief insight for the rest of the week, and perhaps some more snow as well.
1/1/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is a carbon copy of the past two only colder. The AM temp was a frosty -10 degrees although it really did not feel that cold. The sky is a beautiful blue and the sun is out. Something to be thankful for!
1/2/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Very cold again today at -9 degrees under a clear blue sky and sunshine. The cold is supposed to last the rest of this week, then perhaps some relief from the sub zero by tomorrow, but still bitterly cold. This is the worst cold spell since 2014 here. The past couple of winters have not been brutally cold, so I suppose we have gotten used to a mild winter. The wood pile is only going to last a few more days, then we have to rely on the LP.
1/3/2018 7:00 AM M 1.0 M M M The first day with an above zero temp all week at +9 degrees, in fact it is 18 degrees warmer today than on New Years when it was -9 degrees. Never fear, it is supposed to become frigid tonight with below zero temps predicted for tomorrow. Good news is that it will warm up on Sat., and Sunday may get into the 30's for the first time in a long while. It did snow starting sometime before 10 PM that produced an inch of very light and fluffy stuff. The poor winter sports people are still waiting for enough snow to ski, snow board, etc.
1/4/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear and very cold today at -6 degrees, but there is no wind, so it actually feels wormer than yesterday when the wind chill was -2 degrees. Supposed to warm up by Sunday, perhaps reach the freezing mark. Can hardly wait. This severe cold is hard on everyone and everything!
1/5/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another very cold day at -11 degrees with a clear blue sky and bright sunshine.
1/6/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Today is a carbon copy of the past three or so with very cold temps. Today is -10 degrees under a clear blue sky and plenty of sunshine. Tomorrow is supposed to start out frigid, but warm up perhaps into the low 30's by late afternoon. Normal temps will be welcome after this stretch of sub zero for the better part of a week. I worry about the plants surviving this when there is little snow cover for insulation. I just found two bags of bulbs I bought this fall and never planted.

1/8/2018 7:00 AM M M M M M Today was the warmest in about a month at 27 degrees under a clear blue sky with plenty of sunshine. The temps are predicted to reach 40 or beyond for the next couple of days. This is quite a relief from the very cold temps we've been having for the past two weeks. One can only hope this is the end of the sub zero temps, but that is not reality in Wisconsin. Winter can drag on well into April with snow, cold rain, and lots of wind.
1/9/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another warm day with a temp of 27 degrees under an overcast sky that is showing signs of beginning to clear. My dog was overjoyed to go for a long walk for the first time in a while. Perhaps we can walk off some of the Christmas feast! It is predicted to go back into the deep freeze this weekend, maybe below zero again. Any snow is supposed to miss us again.
1/10/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M A warm, at 35 degrees, overcast and damp day. Feels like it could rain any time. Some snow expected late tonight, but again, not enough for winter sports. We appreciate the warm temps and the fact that we can drive the truck up to the house. This can continue for the remainder of the winter!
1/12/2018 7:00 AM M 0.6 M M M Yesterday went from summer to winter in only a few hours. We started out at 45 degrees, some places were into the 50's, then by evening it was 8 degrees. The water in places froze so fast it caused a lot of slick roads. We have rain, then some mixture of rain and snow, then snow. It came down fast for about an hour or so, then stopped after only les than a inch here. Today is cold at 8 degrees, but there is a fierce north wind blowing making it feel like 15 or more below zero. This is supposed to continue through Tuesday. Sunday is expected to have more snow, maybe up to 4" in this area. I plan to stay inside today!
1/13/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M I knew it was cold when the dogs did their business and hurried back in the house. When I looked at the thermometer it read -3 degrees, the coldest so far in this stretch of winter. Yesterday felt cold, the temp was in the low single digits, because of the very strong north winds. I could not feel my fingers after helping to load the Ranger with firewood. I love the warmth of wood heat, but it is a lot of work, especially when it is this cold. Now I have to dump two big pails of ashes!
1/14/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Aother very cold morning at just -2 degrees under a mostly overcast sky. Show is predicted to start later this afternoon with perhaps 4 - 6 inches. If this materializes, it will be the first snowfall of any significance this season. People who like winter sports will be happy as well as those who depend on snow for their winter income.
1/15/2018 7:00 AM M 4.5 M M M We finally got some measurable snow starting yesterday PM and continuing all night and into today. It is very light and fluffy and very pretty. The flakes look like the artificial snow we used to buy when I was a kid! I found it very difficult to measure since there was a lot of blowing with a large snow blower that threw snow many feet; very few open areas where there are not trees or buildings.
1/16/2018 7:00 AM M 0.5 M M M Cold again today at 7 degrees under an overcast sky. It snowed a little past 7AM and again in mid afternoon, but not much. Hope the snow is finished for a while as our snow plow is broken and the part won't arrive until tomorrow! Always something broken, I guess. It wouldn't be bad except for the fact that the part was replaced only two years ago, and the original one lasted 6 years! The Chinese parts aren't very durable, and we don't make them here in USA.
1/17/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today dawned clear and cold, 0 degrees. We cannot seem to get our of the deep freeze around here! There is supposed to be another warm up on Friday. We could use a break from the extreme cold for at least a few days.
1/18/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M A beautiful sunrise today. The AM temp was a warmer 20 degrees on the way to the 30's today. The next two days are supposed to be much warmer, then perhaps some freezing rain for Sunday night.
1/19/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Today is the warmest for quite a while at 26 degrees under a partly overcast sky. Freezing rain or snow is predicted for Sunday. Hopefully we will be able to plow the road before any rain falls. Rain on top of frozen snow is almost impossible to remove without tons of salt which we do not have!
1/20/2018 7:00 AM M M M M M Warm again today at 31 degrees under a mostly clear blue sky. It is expected to remain sunny most of the day, and the temp is supposed to rise into the mid 40's. Tonight we will see rain or freezing drizzle, which will not be a good thing. Getting around here on ice is not easy! We do need the moisture, though. The weather service and the local TV say we are in a moderate drought, and our snowfall is not nearly what it should be by mid January.
1/21/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Today will probably be the last day with a warm temp. A storm system is supposed to move in tonight bringing mixed precipitation and then ending with maybe an inch of snow. The AM temp was a warm 29 degrees, at least for mid January. Much of the snow has melted, and if we get rain most of it will be gone. At least we have a working snow plow now. The paved part of the road is already bare, but the hills are still snow packed for the most part. One more day of warm temps should take care of the snow that remains. If we have icing, that is another story entirely.
1/22/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M It was very dark at 7:00 today and it was raining. Most of the snow, except for a few patches has melted, but there is some ice also. The AM temp was a warm 37 degrees, probably never froze overnight. We are in for rain and later snow, but only an inch or so. Up north, there will be maybe 8" or more. That will be good for the winter sports people.
1/23/2018 7:00 AM 0.71 0.3 M M M Winter is back today with a temp of 27 degrees under an overcast sky and a nasty north wind gusting. Yesterday had a little bit of every form of precipitation. It rained most of the morning, then about noon it became a mixture of rain and snow, then turned to snow. It did not last long, but there was a slushy mess everywhere. We went down after wood, about 3/4 of the way down the driveway where there is a turn a round level area. The road was good except for the area where the packed snow had turned to ice because we had no plow, anyhow, the 90degree turn was total ice. Thankfully much had melted by 2PM when we went out on errands. We were able to drive the Ranger down to the truck parked at the bottom of the hill. The Co road and all others that had been salted/sanded were fine. The drainage ditch that runs along Co S that is normally dry, was running fast with snow melt and rain water. Until I measured the rain that fell, I could not understand why there was so much water there. I think some frost may have come out of the ground as well!
1/25/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Going to be a beautiful winter day starting with a temp of just 24 degrees on the way to the 40's. Yesterday started out nice but it became cloudy and the wind picked up making it rather unpleasant to be outside. Hope today stays sunny and melts some of the ice remaining on parking lots and sidewalks.
1/26/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Today dawned bright and clear with a temp of 37 degrees, near yesterday's high which never reached 40 degrees. Today is supposed to perhaps get into the low 50's. There will be gusty winds and maybe a shower later. If the sun stays out it will warm up as predicted, but if not, it will stay cooler like yesterday did when it clouded over.
1/27/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Yesterday started out with sunshine that soon turned cloudy and then rained. It did not last long nor was there enough to be of any benefit, but it came suddenly and just as quickly left. By early afternoon the sun was shining. It never felt very warm because there was a strong and gusting south wind. Today dawned clear and sunny. but will no doubt cloud over. The AM temp was a warm 31 degrees on the way to the 40's again, then tomorrow will be more seasonable. Some more cold expected for next week, but it is supposed to remain sunny.
1/28/2018 7:00 AM M M M M M Woke up to light snow falling and a temp of 26 degrees; return to winter this week with temps near zero on Wed. AM. The snow is supposed to stop after about 1/2" has fallen which it appears it has now at 9AM. Did not measure snow at 0700, but it was probable about 0.3 inch.
1/29/2018 7:00 AM M 0.7 M M M We got less than an inch of snow yesterday. Today is colder at 20 degrees under a mostly overcast sky. At least we could plow the road, but icy spots remain.
1/30/2018 7:00 AM M M M M M A beautiful crisp and very cool, 7 degrees, day with bright sunshine in a clear blue sky. Today is supposed to warm up into the 30"s again, but tomorrow may reach 40 degrees. We really did not get a very extended January thaw.
1/31/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M It is much warmer today with a temp of 30 degrees under an overcast sky. Caught a glimpse of the beautiful red moon as it was setting in the west behind the tree. Too lazy to walk up to the field on top of the hill for a better look. Wish I had since the next one won't be until 2037, long after I am gone from this earth! The next few days are supposed to be much colder with snow on Saturday. The month of February is also supposed to have temps remain below normal. An early spring would be nice, but not likely!
2/1/2018 7:00 AM M M M M M Today it is back to winter with a vengence! There is a gusting NW wind blowing and the air temp is just 9 degrees, but the wind chill is around 15 - 25 below zero. It is supposed to remain like this through tomorrow, and not much better into next week. Snow expected tomorrow eve and Sunday as well. but only an inch or so. It is not good to have very cold temps with no snow on the ground. So many plants die when we have these conditions for a long period of time. We need the moisture, tool I sincerely hope this will not be one of those dry springs with little rain. If this keeps up with little precip, the spring will probably be dry. Dry and brown springs are not pretty nor are thy good for farm crops and plants in general.
2/2/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M A beautiful clear winter day with bright sunshine in an intense blue sky. The AM temp was a chilly 2 degrees on the way to the mid teens today.
2/3/2018 7:00 AM M T M M M Warmer today at 24 degrees under an overcast sky. Snow expected later today.
2/4/2018 7:00 AM M 2.6 0.30 M M Woke up to a winter wonderland today. It began to snow around mid morning and was still snowing at 11PM. Sometimes it snowed very hard for a while, then not so much at others. I think it was a typical winter snow, not the light and fluffy stuff we have been having this winter. This was the most snow that has fallen here so far this season. The wind is blowing from the north, and since the AM temp was 13 degrees, it is not very pleasant out there. I had the dogs out, fed the birds, and measured the snow and have no desire to go out again.
2/5/2018 7:00 AM M T M M M Today dawned very cold, -3 degrees, under a mostly sunny sky. Yesterday managed to clear off after noon, but the sun just could not overcome the cold. it was -2 at 10 PM. I think this is probably the most snow we have had all winter. It is supposed to snow some more all week. We will have to dig the truck out and plow the road before we can go anywhere. We can hope this is the last of the very cold weather, but this is Wisconsin, so it can remain cold through March and then some. Our newest Amish neighbor is hard up for cash (the goats do not give much milk now) so he has offered to cut some firewood for us and deliver it.
2/6/2018 7:00 AM M 1.4 M M M Today is another beautiful winter day with clear blue skies and bright sunshine. The AM temp was a chilly -1 degree, a tad warmer than the past two days, but certainly not warm! I guess more snow is expected again later this week. We now have the most snow on the ground (4.0" the past two days) for this season. No doubt we need the moisture, but the cold is another story.
2/7/2018 7:00 AM M T M M M It just started to snow at 7:00. The AM temp was much warmer today at 17 degrees, which is probably close to the normal temp for this date. Snow is expected off and on for most of this week.
2/8/2018 7:00 AM M 0.4 M M M Today dawned sunny and warmer at 9 degrees. Snow is expected late today and into tomorrow. We are not in the heaviest band, but could get as much as 5". It seems our lack of snow is coming to an end, just when one could hope for spring! I don't hate snow, but it does make getting around much more difficult. I don't enjoy digging wood out of a snow bank as I did yesterday. I remember in the 80's while living in Milwaukee, the snow banks at the intersections had to be removed because they were so tall the traffic could not see around them.
2/9/2018 7:00 AM M 5.0 0.40 M M It began snowing sometime after 8PM and we ended up with a total of 5 inches of very light, almost fluffy snow. The AM temp was a little warmer at 13 degrees. This is the most snow we've had all season.
2/10/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
2/11/2018 7:00 AM M 0.3 M M M A warmer day starting at 14 degrees on the way to the 20's. Perhaps by Wed. temps may get as high as 44 degrees. That would be a welcomed change from this past week of temps in the teens or lower. No fun digging wood out of a snow bank that is over (have not measured the total on the ground) 10". Overnight there was a little more than a dusting of new snow. Not complaining about the much needed moisture!
2/12/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M 6.3 0.80 Very cold again today at just 3 degrees, but there is bright sunshine in a clear blue sky. Temps are expected to warm up by Wed. There has been no new snow for two days now! Will try to measure snow on the ground today. Not fun when it is this cold to be out digging in the snow. Oh well, will probably have to get more wood off the pile that is buried in snow and pick up more sticks for starting the fires.
2/13/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M No snow again overnight and today is a bit warmer with a temp of 16 degrees under an overcast sky. Temps expected to rise to freezing this PM. Tomorrow is supposed to be warmer with temps into the 40's. That will bee a welcome relief from the frigid temps of the past two weeks. As we move closer to spring one could hope the seasonal norms (high of 28 degrees) will return. Winter always seems to drag on forever this time of year.
2/14/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Today is the warmest in a while at 37 degrees. Mush outside work to be done after all of the cold weather making it difficult to gather wood in the snow. Also hope to take Ramses for a walk that we have been missing all week. He is getting restless and making mischief without the exercise he heeds to stay out of trouble.
2/15/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M It did not freeze overnight and the AM temp was a toasty 37 degrees. A cold front is expected tonight keeping the temps low for the next day or so. Much to early for warm weather to last.
2/16/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M It was warmer today than expected at 22 degrees with the sun shining in a clear blue sky. Perhaps it won't get as cold as predicted. Hope it warms up enough to walk Ramses again. We both need the exercise! No precip either. Much of the snow pack has melted over the last two days. The poor snowmobilers just got a taste of riding before the trails got thawed out and are unusable now.
2/18/2018 7:00 AM M 0.6 M M M Looks as if we are in for some interesting weather the next few days with 45mph winds, rain and freezing rain, some areas of fog, and iced accumulations. No plans to venture out if this is the case. Today is chilly at 21 degrees on the way to the mid 40's. No precip until tonight into Tuesday. We had a little snow yesterday, but some has already melted with temps above freezing yesterday. Very difficult to see the ice from run-off in the parking lot and on the road and walks.
2/19/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Today is quite warm at 37 degrees under an overcast sky. Predictions of freezing rain, etc. have been delayed until tonight. Can hardly wait!
2/20/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M After an all night rain, it is still raining now(9:40)AM. The temp is over freezing at 34 degrees, but close enough that there is ice on the cold ground. I slid down the gravel path caring a 20# dog and was lucky enough to stay upright. The poor canine had a terrible time trying to walk back up the frozen path. I did not have a gauge out as I take it in in the winter to avoid freezing, but there is flooding in SE Wisc. where it rained in late afternoon, with thunder storms, and probably rained all night as well. There were flood warning over that entire area. The rain on top of remaining snow that is melting plus a frozen ground not allowing it to soak in make for flooding conditions. I'm sure the rivers around here will flood to some degree depending on how long it rains. There are warnings out until 6:00PM. Travel is not advised as many roads are ice covered and very slippery! So far there has been no snow or sleet.
2/21/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Today is partly sunny with a temp of 15 degrees on the way to 30. More snow/rain expected tomorrow night and again on Saturday. The ice around here is terrible. We did not go out at all yesterday because it is so slippery everywhere. I finally went out and put salt on the driveway so we can get the Ranger out of the garage. The path beside the house was a skating rink, so also put salt and fine sand. The poor old dog just slid down the incline. Poor dog did not know what was wrong because her feet would not move. Today is not supposed to get warm enough to melt the ice. We are afraid to look at the steep driveway which may be impassable. Not fun spreading 500# if salt.
2/22/2018 7:00 AM M T M M M There was a trace amount of snow on the ground this AM. The temp was a warmer 26 degrees. More rain/snow mix is expected tonight and a stronger storm is supposed to hit on Sunday. Here they are only predicting rain, but that could change should the storm track shift. We do not need any more rain. The ice around here is terrible. We may not be able to get the 4WD Ranger down the road to where the truck is parked. If it warms up a little, the salt will work, making it possible for the ice to melt enough to make the road to be passable.
2/23/2018 7:00 AM M M M M M After a night of rain again, the sidewalk was ice covered and slippery even although the temp was above freezing at 34 degrees. The gravel walk way was just impassable because the ground must have been colder than the sidewalk making the path like a skating rink. Thankfully I had a sack of sand that worked well. The poor dog was terribly afraid to walk on it, but finally gave in. Hopefully the temp will rise today, but not as far as predicted earlier, then another storm is due to arrive later today with more rain/snow. The storm track is not yet determined, so we will have to wait for that. We just got the road de iced enough to get the Ranger down to the truck and back up the hill. Can't win with this winter!!
2/24/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M No rain or snow overnight. The AM temp was 26 degrees under an overcast sky with a few peeks of the sun. Spent much of the morning putting sand and salt on the ice to enable us to get the wood in the Ranger down to the basement. We cut a downed tree that fell last fall along the driveway yesterday making enough firewood for today. If it does not snow or rain overnight there is enough to be cut for another day's worth of burning. I am afraid to look at the LP tank to see how much gas remains. Perhaps in March the road will improve enough to get the cenex truck up here.
2/26/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Bright sunshine for a change today that is supposed to last into Wed. when another weather system is anticipated to arrive. No rain or snow overnight which is good news considering all of the ice we have around here. We are running out of salt, sand and milk (store was out of both skim and whole milk on Thurs.), and are unable to get out. Hopefully today will be better as I was able to scrape some of the ice off the sidewalk. It was thick where water ran over the walk, but the 37 degree temp did allow for some thawing. I could not even walk up to the garage no matter which path I took, and backing the Ranger out would have been very dangerous, although the blacktop had thawed off by afternoon. We have a 90 degree turn on the last leg down the hill that was covered in thick ice from run-off last Sat. and is probably still ice covered and dangerous. Sliding off the road would be very bad since one would land about 30 feet down on Co. S.
2/27/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It remained warm overnight with the AM temp at 34 degrees. A lot of ice melted yesterday, but there is a long way to go until it is all gone. I had to put down a lot of salt and sand in order to harvest some wood for the fires. I am soooo tired of trying to not break my neck or anything else while slipping on this incredible ice. The water from the melt was running at a furious pace. In our usually dry ditch along Co S the water was running very fast and it was over half way up the ditch which the Co had cleaned out late last fall for the first time in about 5 years. The ditches along our driveway were also full of water and the water in the ditch coming down from John's field was running fast also. Should have driven in to Gays to see if the Kickapoo was up. The WI river at Boscobel was bank full and Saunders Creek had gone out of its banks and was over some streets already. It is good to live on a hill except when the water runs down the hill from our parking lot and right into the basement window. We had a major flood on Sun. night with water over our shoes in half of the basement. It took two of us with shop vacs to get it out after putting a sump pump in the window well that kept filling with water from the run off and snow melt. Got to bed past midnight and my back still aches today from spending all that time hunched over vacuuming. I suppose that is one way to get the floor scrubbed!!
2/28/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another bright and sunny day with a temp of 33 degrees. Yesterday got up to 53 degrees and remained mostly sunny all day. Did not freeze overnight. The ice is disappearing rapidly. More snow expected tonight and tomorrow AM. Too good to last. We actually were able to drive the truck up to the house, and go out into the woods to cut down dead apple trees.
3/1/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M No rain or snow overnight. The AM temp was 34 degrees under a partly overcast sky. It is expected to cloff and warm up into the 30's or 40's this PM. Clear and warmer weather predicted for the week end. Another storm will arrive on Sunday night. We drove into Gays Mills yesterday to view the Kickapoo River. Water was running fast and over the dam and was bank full. Any more run off and it will overflow into the park!
3/2/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Today dawned cold,28 degrees, and mostly sunny. Yesterday remained on the cool side with the high temp only 43 degrees, which is probably above normal for Mar. 1st. This weekend is supposed to be warmer with temps into the mid 50's which is normal for a month from now. After this winter, a warmer and earlier spring would be welcomed! More snow expected on Sunday.
3/3/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M A beautiful sunny day, but quite windy making it feel colder than the 41 degrees on the thermometer. Today is supposed to have temps in the 40's and 50's. Tomorrow is also supposed to be nice. The bad will hit on Monday with perhaps rain /snow and much colder temps. Just because it is March doesn't mean winter is over for good! I have seen snow in June, in fact one of the worst days for snow was in May when I had to work at 6AM on the freeway, and the roads were snow covered and very slick. I think Milwaukee Co had put away all of their winter snow removal equipment. Typical!!
3/4/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Only a trace amount of snow remains where there were piles or along the plowed road just in time for another snow storm expected to hit tomorrow with 4 - 6" of new snow. The Am temp was a warm 30 degrees on the way to the 50's again. Yesterday's temp was warm, but there was a nasty north wing making it miserable to be outside. Today seems less windy, so will go for a walk soon.
3/5/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M T M A cloudy, windy and cool (34 degrees), day with a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow expected later in the day. Could get up to 4" of snow depending on where the storm tracks. Just got rid of the snow and mud!
3/6/2018 7:00 AM M 4.5 0.32 4.5 M We had our largest snowfall of the season yesterday. It was actually a blizzard for a short while which snow coming down at the rate of about an inch/hr. I measured the amount around 5PM and today there was an additional inch on the ground. It is the very heavy wet variety one sees in early spring. So glad we have a very big snow blower to path for the dogs or the shoveling would have been a huge task. The road is plowed and the path is blown clear. Time to go out and play in the snow!
3/7/2018 7:00 AM M 1.0 M M M It snowed a little in the morning and again just a trace in later afternoon. The temp today was a chilly 17 degrees. Once again we are supposed to be in a colder period for a few days until it warms up for the week end. Next week we loose an hour of sleep on Sunday night. Can hardly wait. Having longer daylight in the evening is nice, but getting up an hour earlier. especially when it is now light at 7AM not so much!
3/9/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful sunny day with clear blue skies and no snow, but the down side is it is very cold again at 16 degrees. Yesterday never warmed up much. It must have been above freezing because the ice on the side walk was melting. The road is mostly clear now, at least the part that is dark and in the sun. 4WD truck has no problem since the level part is the one in the shade where the sun never rises above the tall pine trees. We do have a lot of snow on the ground that is keeping the temps down. It probably won't melt for a while either.
3/10/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful but cold, at 16 degrees, later winter day. It is supposed to warm up by next week end, maybe even reach 60 degrees. I heard a robin last evening when I went out to feed the deer. In fact, I think a whole flock had landed and were flying around. Poor thing probably took one look at all the snow that is still on the ground and left for a warmer place. I did hear a blue bird last week also, but have not seen or heard it since. They usually show up before the Robins do, usually around Easter, to stake out a nesting site. I should clean out their houses, but it is hard when there is a lot of snow up there. Just one more job I can ignore!!
3/11/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today began with clear skies and a temp of 27 degrees, warmer than the past two days. Now the skies are starting to cloud over. Some snow showers predicted for this PM, but no accumulation. The old snow is melting under the rays of the early March sun but much still remains in the shade and where here were piles of snow. Dealing with mud around here again. Not fun to wash 16 paws at least twice a day!
3/12/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I was surprised to find it was a warmer 32 degrees this AM with a sunny blue sky. Actually, it was still dark at 0700, but is sunny now (0943). The nest day is supposed to be cool, then warm, almost 50 for the rest of the week. Can hardy wait. Getting rid of the snow still on the ground would be great. I am tired of muddy paws every day!
3/13/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another cool, clear and sunny morning with a temp of just 25 degrees. One more day of cold weather; yesterday had a very chilly north wind making it feel much colder than it actually was. The snow is melting which is a good thing if it melts slowly the rivers won't rise. The robins and blue bird have disappeared-wonder is they took one look at all the snow and left.
3/14/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another cool mostly sunny day with a temp of 25 degrees on the way to the 40's today. Yesterday was nice, but the cold north wind made being outdoors quite unpleasant. We got no snow, but parts of the state did according to the evening news.
3/16/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another mostly sunny day with a temp of 25 degrees and windy. It is supposed to warm up into the 50'x today, but some rain and snow mix is predicted for this evening.
3/17/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M The rain, sleet and snow predicted for late yesterday did not materialize. Woke up to an overcast sky that now has cleared and bright sunshine has taken its place. The AM temp was 29 degrees, a few degrees warmer than it has been. I did hear a robin yesterday and again this AM, so I guess they are back. Will have to go up to the field to see if the Blue Birds are also back, again. The road was snow covered which has now turned to ice making walking and driving difficult, but the past few days with above normal temps have helped to melt most of the snow. We wanted to back the truck down to the back door so put salt on the big piece of ice on the corner where the snow melt runs down the road, joins the pile of snow left by the plow, and collects there. Much of that ice did melt yesterday. We have been cutting wood over in the woods to the west of the house where two huge ancient elms had finally fallen down. Lots of wood there and it is wonderful for burning.
3/18/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A little colder this AM with a temp of 24 degrees under a bright blue sky and sunshine. Most of the snow piles have now melted, but there is still mud where the frost is coming out of the ground.
3/19/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It did not freeze overnight. The AM temp was 33 degrees under a clear blue sky with bright sunshine, again. It looks like today will be a beautiful late winter day with just one more day until official spring arrives. Can hardy wait for my favorite season! Most of the snow and ice patches around here have melted with the warmth of the sun which is climbing higher in the sky every day.
3/20/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is overcast with a temp of 27 degrees. It is supposed to remain cloudy all day and the temp is not predicted to rise above the 30's. Yesterday turned out to be a beautiful sunny day except for the very nasty gusty wind which made it feel much colder than the temperature indicated. At least almost all of the snow piles have melted; now there is just mud!
3/21/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
3/22/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today dawned clear and cold with a temp of just 20 degrees. Snow expected for tomorrow night, perhaps up to 4". Don't like the thoughts of that since most of the snow on the ground has melted and some of the mud has dried up from the last snowfall.
3/23/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful sunny day with a cloudless blue sky and bright sunshine. The temp was a seasonal 27 degrees. A rather nasty rain, sleet, whatever storm is predicted for later tonight and into Saturday. I am really tired of the 16 paws walking in the mud and tracking it into the house. How does one train a dog to wipe his/her feet before walking on the carpet???
3/24/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No snow yet! It is warmer today at 31 degrees and still windy. It was windy at 10PM which is unusual, and kept blowing all night. Wonder if the storm will arrive here yet today! It can stay away as far as I am concerned! I am tired of the mud tracking into the house as the snow piles melted along the path making it a total mud puddle and then some. Of course four canines like to puddle in it just like children!
3/25/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is cold, 22 degrees, and clear with a blue sky and bright sunshine. Never did get the 6" of snow or so predicted for yesterday AM. Not sorry, as things have dried up around here. A very few snow piled where it was moved with the plow, remain and on the south side of the field where the run never reaches because of the tall trees in the woods. I did see the blue bird again and there are a few robins making noise around the house. The turkeys are also gobbling in the morning, but have not seen them since they are rather shy and stay in the woods.
3/26/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today began sunny but has become cloudy now. The AM temp was 30 degrees with rain expected to began this PM and perhaps thunder storms this evening. It is supposed to be warmer this week which will be welcome after last week was cold and very windy. Typical March weather for WI. At least we did not get the latest snow storm that was predicted to drop up to 6" of heavy wet snow here.
3/27/2018 7:00 AM M M M M M It began raining sometime after 8PM and was still raining at 11PM with some snow flakes mixed in. Did not put out the gauge due to the temps being below freezing the past few days. Today the temp is 35 degrees under an overcast sky. Not a very nice day to be outside. We do have to cut more wood. Did not get any yesterday; the chain saw had such a dull chain that it no longer could cut through the wood. We now have a new sharp chain, but now the wood is all wet making it more difficult to cut and harder to get to it in the woods. Thank heavens for LP which does a great job keeping us warm! The early flowers are up and one is actually blooming. The rhubarb is also peeking up out of the dirt. The robins are making a lot of noise and the cardinal is singing his heart out now. I think there are two of them where we used to have at least a dozen pairs. There is a bird predator bird here, we think it is an American kestrel, not much bigger than a robin and very quick.
3/28/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is very foggy with a temp of 26 degrees on the way to the 50's. Today is supposed to be the warmest day of the week. Easter will be cold and rainy. Glad I do not have a new Easter dress or have to worry about freezing in a new spring coat like we did as children. How times have changed; no one wears a dress or even buys a "spring" coat anymore. Most likely to wear a pair of old jeans and a sweat shirt, or even not go to church at all!
3/29/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is sunny, but cool at 34 degrees. The water in a bird bath was not frozen this at 7AM. The weather forecast is for cooler temps for the first half od April. Yesterday, although it did not reach 60 degrees, was the warmest it will be for the remainder of this week and into next. Easter is supposed to be very cool and not very nice.
3/30/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another chilly day at 27 degrees, but the sun is shining in a clear blue sky. Went to the storm spotter training last PM in Seneca, about 14 miles from here, ( I did some substitute teaching in Seneca) which is the closest site. Every year is different, and this was no exception. I have probably attended at least 15 of these since living full time in Crawford Co. I did renew my Radio Amateur License this year, so am good until 2028. By that time, providing I live that long, I will be approaching 90 years old. How time flies!! This year will mark 60 years since graduating from Platteville High School!!
3/31/2018 7:00 AM M M M M M It rained most of the night, but the temp did stay above freezing, 36 degrees this AM. It is a very dreary, drippy, dark and dismal day. Thankful that the 6" or so of heavy, wet snow stayed in the far northern counties of the state.
4/1/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today dawned clear and very cold at just 15 degrees. It may warm up into the high 30's by afternoon. Not a very nice day to show off your Easter finery, that is if anyone has any or even goes church anymore!
4/2/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M What began as a beautiful sunny day has now turned cloudy on the way to overcast. The temp was a chilly 17 degrees again It is supposed to remain colder than normal to at least the middle of the month. An early spring would have been nice. Not that this was such a bad winter, but by April one expects some warmer temps and sunshine. We could use a lot of rain around here. The soil is very dry and farmers have already started preparing fields for planting. Seeds don't grow well in dry soil!
4/3/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Much more seasonable today with a temp of 29 degrees under an overcast sky and the definite feel of rain in the air. We are predicted to get perhaps 4" of snow today and tomorrow. The air actually feels like something is about to happen. It is already sort of drizzling now with more to follow!!
4/4/2018 7:00 AM M 2.0 M M M It began as rain then turned to snow, the heavy and wet variety, then it stopped for a while, then began again around 5PM and snowed until after dark. All total the snow measured 2" this AM. Because it rained first, then snowed, the ground was warm thus melting the first snow that fell so measurement was not actually a true picture of the snow fall.
4/5/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is clear with a bright sun and a blue sky; the only problem is it feels like February with a temp of just 16 degrees. With 2" of snow on the ground in places it is not supposed to warm up until the middle of next week. I feel for the poor robins and other birds that don't eat seeds very often, trying to find food in the snow and the frozen ground. Much of the snow did melt yesterday due to a warm April sun that is higher in the sky than it is in the winter.
4/7/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today began bright and sunny, but very cold again at just 19 degrees. We have been running about 20 degrees colder than seasonal for the entire week! It is not expected to warm up into the 50's until next Wed. There are still quite a few patches of snow in the woods and where the sun cannot reach.
4/8/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another what looks like a beautiful spring morning until one looks at the thermometer. This AM was a cool 15 degrees at 7:00. Yesterday never got out of the 30's all day, then a nasty wind kicked up to make things even more miserable. In spite of the cold. the dogs and I did go for a short walk down the driveway. They did not seem to mind the temperature. There is still quite a lot of snow around here, again in the shady places where the son does not warm things up. I tried getting some fire wood out of what is left of the pile and it had refrozen. Had to knock it loose in order to get enough for the fire. Today we have to go out and saw more wood which we were hoping was done for the season. Maybe this year we should buy three big truck loads at $650. per load, then we will have an early spring!! More snow expected tomorrow. perhaps as much as 4" again.
4/9/2018 7:00 AM M 0.3 M M M Woke up to a world of white today. While it is little more than a dusting, seeing this in the second week of April is not a pretty sight It could be worse: on this date back in the 1970's while living in Milwaukee, we got something like a foot of heavy wet snow. I remember out older son, now 54 years old, looking out the storm door at his father blowing the snow off the sidewalk. The sky was overcast and a few flakes were falling, but is now starting to clear and there are patches of blue. We have a crazy robin that keeps showing up in one of the bird feeders. Maybe it isn't so crazy, just hungry!
4/10/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is clear and a little warmer. Temps could reach the mid 40's this PM. Today started out at 30 degrees and will warm up more than the past week did. Tomorrow with a southerly wind, temps may reach into the 50's. Of course rain, even thunderstorms are also expected. We could certainly use the moisture. There are still large patches of snow on the ground because it has remained very cold, the coldest since the 70's.
4/11/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Not a cloud in the sky this AM, and the temp was a bit warmer at 33 degrees. Today is supposed to be much warmer, in the mid 50's which should last for a couple of days, then back into the deep freeze.
4/12/2018 7:00 AM 0.12 0.0 M M M A dismal day with fog and dampness, but we did get some much needed rain, however not nearly enough to make a dent in the dry conditions. It was raining quite hard at 10PM, but it must not have continued for very long as I only measured a little over 0.01 of an inch this AM.
4/13/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M There was a huge black front in the NW this AM that arrived about 8AM with some pretty big hail (pea sized up to 3/4") that covered the deck. It is still there now although the temp is 38 degrees down from 41 earlier. Places in N Wisc. could get up to to a foot of snow later. We could get up to 3". Don't heed any more snow but the rain is needed!
4/14/2018 7:00 AM 1.06 M M M M There was a little bit of everything weather wise yesterday. It began with hail, some at least 3/4" in diameter which, in spite of the warmer temps, remained on the ground for at least 3 hours. The deck was completely covered in white ice. Later it rained, and overnight there was some snow which resembled pieces of ice rather than round snow flakes. Because of the wind which was rather fierce, the snow did not cover all of the ground, just patches here and there. The rain gauge held 0.99" of rain and the melted snow added another 0.17" to that. Today is extremely windy from the North East with gusts up to 40mph expected. Could not measure the snow because it is scattered all over at different depths. Later today the precip will turn to snow as the temp falls. The AM temp was just 32 degrees. The rain on raised surfaces was already frozen. There could be downed trees and power lines due to heavy icing later. Glad we have the Generac!
4/15/2018 7:00 AM M 2.2 M M M Yesterday was another wild weather day! It rained, it sleeted, and then it snowed. Not nice to wake up to over 2" of heavy, wet, snow with more falling. Really, couldn't tell if it was raining or snowing now. More ecpected on Wed.
4/16/2018 7:00 AM M 0.8 M M M It managed to snow off and on for most of the day and into the night!. It was difficult to measure exactly how much snow fell because it just kept falling, sometimes very fine and sometimes big flakes. Since there is a coating of ice under the snow it is very hard to get down to bare ground. We did plow the road after 3PM, and most of the asphalt was bare last PM.
4/17/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A day with sunshine for a change! The AM temp was 31 degrees, and with a warm sun and bright sunshine it was a sharp contrast to the past week's worth of sleet, snow, and bitter cold winds. It will end tomorrow with another snow storm that could drop another 6 - 8" of snow on this area. Got a photo from brother in law in northern WI who got over 20" of snow from the past two storms. They are still digging out!
4/18/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M What began as a sunny day has now become overcast, and we are waiting for the storm that is supposed to dump perhaps 6" more snow today and into Thurs. Will spring ever arrive??
4/19/2018 7:00 AM M 6.5 M M M I measured the snow at 4PM yesterday at 4.5" but it continued to snow until after dark. It was very difficult to measure today because we had shoveled and blown the snow later in the day, and there was still snow on the ground from the previous storm. My best guess is that it snowed another 2" after that making the total around 6.5". The snow was extremely wet and heavy making it difficult to plow and even our big blower had trouble because the snow would not feed into the auger. We may be stranded until the snow is removed. Now they are talking flooding when this mess melts under the warm April sun which is shining today. Actually it is beautiful outside with an intense blue sky and the white snow covering everything with a thick coating of snow. The poor robins are having a hard time finding food. We have a million birds in the feeders now, some that normally do not eat sunflower seeds. The robin likes the woodpecker's suet.
4/20/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful sunny day with a cold temp of just 23 degrees. Yesterday warmed up into the 50's for the first time in at least a week. The snow melted at a fast pace causing the weather service to post flood warnings for the Kickapoo River and several in Iowa due to the fast melting snow.
4/21/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A warmer start to the day at 37 degrees which means it did not freeze overnight. A lot of the probably close to 10" of snow on the ground has melted leaving just the places where the sun does not reach or where there were piles from plowing or blowing. We do little shoveling anymore! It is gloomy and overcast so if the sun does not shine, the snow will not melt at a fast pace. The Wisconsin river at Boscobel was up a little, but no where close to bank full, of course it will rise much slower. The run-off from the farm fields did not appear to be very much, and the ditch down by Co. S just had a small stream of water in it.
4/22/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M At last some spring like weather in the middle of April. Today began at 41 degrees on the way to the mid 60's. We have not had a 60 degree temp yet this year. I think this has been the 23nd coldest April ever. I see the spring flowers have emerged from the snow and have just popped in the past day. Normally they would be in full bloom by now, in fact, some are still under the latest snow! Now we could use some spring rain!
4/23/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
4/24/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful spring day with bright sunshine and a temp of 49 degrees on the way to the 70's. A good day for outside work. The early flowers are blooming now after peeking their heads out of snow banks for over a week. Amazing how they survive the cold and still retain their beauty. There are still some piles of snow along the road and parking lot which should melt today. Rams and I walked around the field and there is still a little snow on the southeast corner where the sun rarely reaches.
4/25/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Much cooler today at 39 degrees with a cool wind blowing. Bright sunshine in a clear blue sky will help to warm things up a bit. Yesterday did get into the 70's, but a brisk wind kept it from feeling too warm. Things are very dry around here and much rain is not in the forcast since the humicity is extremely low.
4/27/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A clear intense blue sky has become mostly cloudy in a matter of an hour, although it appears to be clearing now at 9:00. There is a robin sitting in the middle of the sidewall looking happy since the ground is completely bare and she can find food. I was afraid some of them might have parished because there was no food, but I do see many more than before the snow. My concern is for the blue birds. I have not seen or heard any on my walks up in the field. They could had shelter in the houses, but maybe they just moved on. There weren't many last year either! Not a sign of any of the later birds such as orioles or grosbeaks. I read in the paper that some people had wrens, and one had a whippoorwill. We used to have one way back in the 70's that sat on our gravel pile just out side the door, and sang very loudly and at 0500!
4/28/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful sunny, but cool at 36 degrees day. Yesterday did cloud over and appeared that it might rain, but did not happen. Today might warm up a little later and hopefully remains sunny all day.
4/29/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today remains unseasonably cool due to the jet stream pulling cold air from Canada down. It is supposed to shift north, bringing warmer air from the south. So far the temp today was 1 degree warmer than yesterday's 36 degrees. It never got out of the 50's yesterday with a cold NE wind blowing it felt much colder. It did remain sunny all day for a change which kept the temp up a little, but still not really nice to be outside in an unprotected spot. The rhubarb is coming along nicely. It has developed quite large leaves, and the little stems have grown a lot in just a few days. Perhaps by the middle to end of the week it should be ready to harvest. My favorite pie is rhubarb custard which my grandmother always made. I think she made at least two or three pies every week, and they were all wonderful and made from scratch with lard we rendered from the pigs we butchered. That is a long gone generation of bakers and cooks with no packaged goods, period.
4/30/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It was 10 degrees warmer today at 49 degrees on the way to the high 70's. There are no leaves on the trees and the grass is not a bit green yet, although that is probably due to the very dry conditions here. We really do need some rain which is predicted to come on Tuesday and the rest of the week. One can only hope it does. Last year we had abundant rainfall and things were so green. This year it is brown and barren. Instead of rain in April, we had two big snow storms!
5/1/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
5/2/2018 7:00 AM 1.93 M M M M Spring literally arrived overnight. We were blessed with almost 2" of rain starting around 7PM and continuing all night. There was some thunder and lightning, but nothing too bad. It rained quite hard at times, but not enough for flash flooding here. No water in the basement this time! The grass is a beautiful green and the plants have just popped. The later birds arrived yesterday; orioles, grosbeaks, hummingbirds, nuthatches(which I thought stayed all winter, but have not seen any until yesterday including a cute little red breasted one). Put out the usual food for them and hoping they stay around for a while. The phoebes have started to build nests outside our bedroom window and under the deck. The AM temp was 59 degrees on the way to the mid to high 70's. More rain expected later today and tomorrow.
5/3/2018 7:00 AM 0.40 0.0 M M M I rained, sometimes pretty hard during the day, but only about 0.1" fell overnight. Today dawned warm, at 59 degrees, and sunny. There are some clouds rolling in now, and rain is predicted for later this afternoon. Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny. Hope things dry out so we can begin gardening. It is already getting late to start cleaning off the old dead plants, etc. The rhubarb should be ready to harvest in a day or two. Can hardly wait!!
5/4/2018 7:00 AM 2.43 0.0 M M M More rain yesterday and overnight. It began raining around 4PM and continued to rain through the night. I was surprised to see almost 21/2" in the gauge this morning. Thankfully there was no severe weather associated with this storm here; Places in the state got a lot of damaging hail on Wed. night. I suspect the rivers around here will flood. The WI at Boscobel was out of its banks on Wed., but yesterday was just bank full. Since there was feet of snow to melt up north, that could account for the large amount of water. It is nice to see things green and pretty, but enough is enough!
5/5/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain yesterday or overnight! Went into Gays Mills to see if the Kickapoo River had flooded. The water was high and out of its banks, over the dam and into Lion's Park. The water was running fast. Until it is up to the bank at the top of Main Street it could not be considered as a big flood! Today is sunny and supposed to reach the 80's this PM, but showers are expected late afternoon and evening. Tomorrow will be colder since a cold front will cross later this evening.
5/6/2018 7:00 AM 0.10 0.0 M M M Yesterday was a beautiful one with sunny skies and less wind. A storm from the west came through after 10PM, but the bulk of it went to the north. There was a little thunder and lightning and some rain. We really did not need a lot of rain after the past two storms. Things are greening up and the fire danger is past. Now if we could only get into the garden to till!
5/7/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today looks to be another beautiful one with bright sunshine in an intense blue sky and low humidity. Mush yard work to be done. The orioles are back along with the wrens, and I saw an indigo bunting, missing last year, in the feeder. Love those beautiful all blue birds! I sis not see the hummer at all yesterday in spite of my efforts to attract them with three feeders. The big old red breasted woodpecker is enjoying my oriole food!
5/8/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Going to be another beautiful day with sunshine and an almost clear blue sky. Showers expected tomorrow and probably for the rest of the week.
5/9/2018 7:00 AM 0.57 0.0 M M M Today is cool, cloudy and rainy. It rained off and on most of the night and is still raining, although very much. This is supposed to be the pattern for the next few days and into next week. We really did need the rain in spite of all that fall earlier. The Kickapoo river is still bank full (we went over and read the river gauge yesterday which was 12.8 ft.) Flood stage is 13 feet! If more rain continues, it will probably rise again. The Mississippi River is flooding through all of southern WI.
5/10/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain overnight or yesterday, but there were storms to our south. A tornado was suspected near Fennimore in Grant Co. Today as overcast with a temp of 54 degrees and rather gloomy. More rain expected for tomorrow.
5/11/2018 7:00 AM M M M M M
5/12/2018 7:00 AM M M M M M Was not able to read the gauge yesterday, but will list my two day total as just 1 inch. It rained off and on for most of the day yesterday. No rain overnight, but it has been unseasonably cold these past few days. This AM it was 42 degrees, an d yesterday all day never got out of the 40's. IT was 39 yesterday morning as I was driving to Boscobel, where by the way, the Wisconsin River is bank full, and had spilled over into the parking lot on Tues and Wed. We went over to Gay after 4PM, and the water was way down from earlier in the week when it had been just below flood stage. The dam was showing, and there was no water over Sand Lake Rd that had been flooded earlier.
5/13/2018 7:00 AM 0.36 M M M M It did rain overnight starting some time before 10PM, Everything is beautiful and green now from all of the rain we have been having. Now it needs to stop so we can plant the garden. Have two flats of annuals to plant when the threat of frost is gone ( it was just 46 degrees this AM so we aren't there yet!) I think it was two years ago that it froze very late and killed all of the buds on the nut trees. Not a single hickory nut that year! Last fall we had just tons of black walnuts we invited the little Amish girls to pick up two big totes of them.
5/14/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain overnight although some was predicted. It appears that it is going to fall today as the sky is heavily overcast and the air feel very humid. I wish it would just rain and get it over with. There is so much outside work to be done that can't be done in the rain or when the ground is muddy as it is now.
5/15/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Ni rain here again. Things are starting to dry out a little. Will try to do some yard work today. Will have to water the new grass that is starting to emerge. Rain not expected until Thurs night, and of course into the week end.
5/16/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yesterday was a beautiful day with bright sunshine, all day long) low humidity and a cloudless blue sky. Today is supposed to be the same and so will Thurs. and Friday. It was cooler today at 54 degrees due to high pressure that will stick around until Fri. night. Time to get outside and do some much needed yard work and gardening.
5/17/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful day with clear blue skies and bright sunshine. The AM temp was a cool 55 degrees on the way to the 80's again.
5/18/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is going to be another beautiful one. I wasted yesterday shopping instead of doing my yard work, so hope to do better today. Have to go to town to do some banking, thus today is already shaping up to be a messy one! We also have to go to the greenhouse for some annuals to plant in the pots along the parking lot. We always have some mission away from here it seems! It is supposed to cloud over and rain tomorrow, but the bank is not open then!
5/19/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is cool and overcast with a temp of just 50 degrees. Rain expected this PM and into the evening as well. No rain so far though.
5/20/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It had just begun to rain at 7:00. The rain won't last long or be very much, just enough to wet things down a bit. Plenty of outside work to do, to that is a good thing. Actually, with no rain the past week, things are still plenty wet in the low lying areas. Watched a farmer trying to till a bottom field that was pretty much mud yet. Lots of corn and beans yet to be planted!
5/21/2018 7:00 AM 0.11 0.0 M M M The rain promised yesterday and overnight has finally arrived now past 10AM. It is a good thing that now I won't have to water my grass and flowers, but the poor farmers are still trying to plant crops, and we can't till the garden. This week end is Memorial Day, so we usually try to plant just before or after that date. Good luck since the rain is supposed to last for a couple of more days!
5/22/2018 7:00 AM 0.31 0.0 M M M It rained more like drizzled all day yesterday from a darkened sky and there was some fog as well. Not a very nice day to be outside. Today looks to be the same. It is not raining, but appears as if it could rain any time. The moisture is good for the growing plants, but not for the farmers who still have crops left to plant. The Orioles are eating jelly at a fast clip. I bought 3 jars on Sunday and they are almost all eaten already. The big red bellied woodpecker is also eating. The AM temp was 55 degrees.
5/23/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain overnight. Today is overcast with a temp of 56 degrees. It is supposed to warm up into the 80's by the week end.
5/24/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M This was the first morning of a 60 degree starting temp. Maybe summer will come after all! No overnight rain, but some is in the forecast for whenever the next front arrives. Actually there is sunshine, the first in many days, and the sky is cloudless. It should be a nice day except for the humidity which was in the 60's yesterday PM and climbing!
5/25/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today will be a hot one for May. Seems summer has started with a bang?
5/26/2018 7:00 AM 0.59 0.0 M M M Yesterday was a very warm and humid one. We have quite a thunder storm around 8PM with much lightning and thunder. Thankfully it did not rain very long, but came down in torrents for about an hour. It did produce over 1/2" of rain. Today is much less humid with a clear blue sky and bright sunshine.
5/27/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is going to be another hot one! It is already 85 degrees at 11AM on the way to the mid 90's again. At least one more day of this before it is supposed to cool off. I only hope we are not in for another bad storm in order to cool things off. It was just a month ago that we had 6" of snow. What a contrast!
5/28/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The heat is supposed to continue through today, although the temp this Am was 68 degrees with a gentle breeze. Too much humidity, other wise a rather pleasant morning.
5/29/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hot again today but relief is in sight. Some rain is expected later today and into tonight. The AM temp was 73 degrees, but felt much warmer due to the high humidity. We could use some rain after these three very hot days.
5/30/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is supposed to be cooler, but the AM temp is still 71 degrees and humid. There were a few raindrops on the deck, but no significant rainfall to report. The radar suggests that there is some on the way from the southeast moving to the northwest. Not the usual direction for storms here. When there was snow an cold in April we wished for warmth, not that it is very hot, we wish for cooler weather!
5/31/2018 7:00 AM 0.37 0.0 M M M It rained twice yesterday, but not a whole lot either time. It did cool off today with an AM temp of 63 degrees. It is still humid because everything is dripping wet, but the sun is shining in a clear blue sky. The temp is supposed to warm up to 85 degrees today, but if it dries out, things will be better than the past three days have been. I don't do well in high heat an humidity
6/1/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain yesterday or overnight. The AM temp was a toasty 68 degrees. Yesterday got quite warm, although there was a gentle breeze that made it feel less hot and humid. It would be nice if it would just rain and get it over with. Nice weather is predicted for the week end.
6/2/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today's temp is more seasonal at 55 degrees. The cooler air feels so good after what seems like a month of hot, hot, hot! There are showers out in Iowa and Minn. moving east which may reach us later.
6/3/2018 7:00 AM 0.27 0.0 M M M A thunderstorm around 8PM did not last long, but dumped over a quarter inch of rain. I knew if I watered the tomatoes, it would rain! Today is breezy and cool at 58 degrees on the way to the low to mid 70's. It feels cold after a week of scorching hear and humidity! The rest of the week will be cooler, but could have some rain by Wed.
6/4/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is cool, at just 50 degrees, and sunny for a change. Hope it stays that way so things dry out a little. So much tall grass to mow, and cannot do it if the grass is wet.
6/5/2018 7:00 AM 0.13 M M M M There was some rainfall overnight. Today feels a bit more settles with a clear blue sky and sunshine. Severe storms expected tomorrow just west of us over in Iowa.
6/6/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is cloudy and cool at 58 degrees. The sun is trying to shine now, but probably won't. Some storms are expected later today. No rain overnight, but there could be chances for the next two days.
6/7/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A warmer and more humid day with a temp of 68 degrees at 9:25. The sky is cloudy and there is a breeze. Hope it does now get beastly hot and humid later . Rain is predicted for the rest of the week.
6/8/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is overcast with a storm approaching from Iowa. There is a big black bank of clouds to the west. Went strawberry picking at 7:00, but the storm came just before 8AM. There was a heavy downpour as we were checking out. There was over 1/3" of rain in the gauge when we got home, and it has been raining, not heavily, ever since. We can really use the moisture. Now I won't have to water any plants today.
6/9/2018 7:00 AM 0.56 M M M M We did get over 1/2" of rain yesterday. It came in the early morning sometime after 7AM and again in early afternoon around 1PM. The morning rain had some thunder and lightning and the rain came down in torrents for a short while. We are dealing with more mush needed road construction on US Hwy 61 north of here where they left off last year. It will be wonderful when complete, but right now it is a big pain since we need to go to S. Grove and Viroqua quite often and one never knows how long the trip will take.
6/10/2018 7:00 AM 1.84 M M M M The storm arrived here sometime around 8PM. There was loud thunder and lightning. At 10PM it was pouring rain with lots of lightning and thunder. The rain must have continued into the night judging from the amount of rain in the gauge at 0700 this AM. We had a few branches down from a dead branch in a tree in the year, bud really no major damage. There must not have been much wind here. There was a lot of damage to our west in Iowa and Minn. where the storm produced lots of rain and wind. Many rivers there are flooding according to NWS. We will probably go for a drive later to survey the rivers in this area, although if there was not much rain to our north, there probably is not severe flooding. The ground was saturated from the rains earlier in the week, so most of this would run off causing the rivers to rise.
6/11/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain yesterday or overnight. Today is mostly cloudy and very windy. Rain expected tonight.
6/12/2018 7:00 AM T M M M M Not much rain overnight, just a few sprinkles, enough to wet the sidewalk. The AM temp was 65 degrees under an overcast sky. Showers expected up north later this PM. Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny and pleasant. The heat will return for the week end with temps perhaps into the 90's. Can hardly wait!
6/13/2018 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Yesterday was dark and dreary all day with no sunshine and occational drizzle. Today is clear and sunny with a temp of 62 degrees. The overnight storms promised did not materialize. Today will be a good one to catch up on outside work that has fallen behind.
6/14/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain again and yesterday was a picture perfect day with bright sunshine, low humidity, and a clear blue sky for most of the day. Today is overcast and storms are predicted for the rest of the day. The AM temp was 61 degrees and the humidity is rising. Tomorrow may well reach into the 90's. Not good!
6/15/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is cool at 64 degrees with a nice breeze, but by afternoon it is expected to reach into the 90's. Yesterday we drove through a rather strong rain shower on the way into Boscobel, but by the time we arrived it had stopped raining. I looked at the rain gauge when we got home and there was not a drop in it! I was also surprised to see all of the sand bars that appeared in the WI River since the last time I was there. We have not seen them for most of the summer because of all the rain up north.
6/16/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is going to be a hot one with a starting temp of 74 degrees on the way to the mid 90's. The worst part is the high humidity which makes it feel much hotter. No rain overnight and probably not for the next three days or so. All the rain will remain north of I-90.
6/17/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another hot and humid day with a starting temp of 75 degrees. There is a brisk wind so actually it does not feel as hot as the temp indicates. Up in the garden, in the shade with the wind, it really wasn't as bed as one would expect. We keep the shades drawn in the east in the morning and with the many large shade trees, our house stays relatively cool until late afternoon.
6/18/2018 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M There was a brief shower sometime overnight. The worst here will be late afternoon when strong storms are predicted for W. Iowa and SW Wisconsin.
6/19/2018 7:00 AM 0.55 M M M M Today is much cooler (62 degrees) after an overnight rain. It feels wonderful after the past 3 or 4 days of intense heat and humidity.
6/20/2018 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Another gloomy day with showers starting to fall. Yesterday also remained overcast with some drizzle. Other parts of the state, up north and along the IL boarder had severe storms with much rain leading to major flooding, especially in Bayfield Co. I guess we should be thankful any rain here was not in the dangerous amount category. It was mentioned that the Mississippi could flood again.
6/21/2018 7:00 AM M M M M M Due to the fact that the rain gauge was out under a maple tree, the reading is not accurate. At 9AM there was 0.51" of rain in it. It was pouring rain very early (probably 4:00) this AM and continued until after 9AM. I noticed yesterday when we crossed the WI River at Boscobel it was running much higher than it was a day ago, in fact it was almost bank full which it has not been. Much rain fall at the source up north. Flooding near the Dells and other places where it always floods.
6/22/2018 7:00 AM M M M M M It rained steadily all day yesterday. Since the gauge was still under the tree, the amount collected was not the correct one, but it still contained 0.90". This was not a 24 hr. total since it was measured later in the morning. Will try to get back to normal reporting once son moves his car and trailer that is in the parking lot now! We have so many BIG trees that finding a spot not under one is almost impossible. The middle of the parking lot is the best place. Yes, we have knocked over several so I have pieces of about four here that come in handy when there is over 1" of rain overnight. At one time we put one on a post up in the field, but walking up there, or getting out the LUV is not something I want to do at 0700!
6/23/2018 7:00 AM M 0.0 M M M Today may remain sunny all day! The first day for about a week that it isn't going to rain. Lots of outside work to accomplish so hope it stays this way. Showers expected for the next three or so days.
6/24/2018 7:00 AM T M M M M Today dawned with a bright blue sky, not a cloud in sight, and very humid even tho the temp was not that high. Some clouds showing up now. Yesterday it did manage to rain, only a few drops, but enough to keep the humidity high.
6/25/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain overnight but more expected tomorrow. It feels humid, although the humidity is not terribly high. Things still have not dried out from almost a week of rain and overcast skies. A couple of nice sunny days would help! The AM temp was a warm 62 degrees under a partly overcast sky.
6/26/2018 7:00 AM 0.32 M M M M
6/27/2018 7:00 AM 1.25 M M M M Most of the rain fell between 11AM and noon. The sky became very dark and the rain came down in torrents for about an hour. It did finally clear off after 3PM. The AM temp was 64 degrees. By Friday we are supposed to have another extremely hot and humid day with heat indicies over 100 degrees.
6/28/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is starting out as a beautiful day with a temp of 67 degrees under a clear blue sky, and bright sunshine, but the humidity is already oppressive only to become worse as the temperature rises later.
6/29/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today dawned sunny without a cloud in the sky. The AM temp was a warm 70 degrees on the way to the high 90's. We are under a heat advisory for heat indicies rising to perhaps 110 degrees. Tomorrow more of the same is predicted. It is supposed to cool off by Sunday. I plan to do the outside work early and sit by the AC the rest of the day!
6/30/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is going to be another hot one since it was already 75 degrees at 6AM. There was quite a breeze yesterday just moving the hot and humid air around. The condensate from the air conditioner is 3" deep in a 12 X 15" square container from overnight. Lots of water in that air! Do not plan to spent much time outside today. Have to water the tomatoes, peppers, and egg plant in the raised beds (the only garden we have due to illness and the presence of seed eating moles. I was going to plant some glad bulbs, but have not gotten around to doing so yet. I'm sure the mole will have a feast if I do, but if I don't plant them they will rot before next year anyway.
7/1/2018 7:00 AM 0.58 M M M M A brief storm rolled through around 6PM. The sky became very dark and there was some rain and wind, but we did not get a lot of either. Some more rain fell over night. Things are pretty much soaked again. Without any sun shine for several days and plenty of rain, nothing gets a chance to dry out. The plants love it, though. The corn seems to have grown about 6". The grass I planted grew at least an inch last night!
7/2/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain yesterday or overnight, and today is bright and sunny with less humidity and a temp of 66 degrees.
7/3/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain again, but the humidity has crept up past 63. Today is sunny with a temp of 68 degrees on the way to the high 80's. Yesterday started out cooler, but still managed to climb into the mid 80's with higher humidity as well. There could be rain for tomorrow as a cold front is expected to arrive then making rain chances a possibility for later in the day.
7/4/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We are in the midst of a heat wave! The 7AM temp was already 71 degrees, but it is very humid, judging from what it was yesterday, it is probably in the high 60% range.I'm supposed to go up to the garden and rake off some of the dead stuff before it can be dug up. Much too hot for that work, but I do have to water the raised beds, so will go at it. It is in the shade so won't be too hot yet.
7/5/2018 7:00 AM 0.69 M M M M A stormed roll through around 5PM and lasted about an hour with pouring rain. There was no thunder and lightning or hail, just a lot of rain in an hour. Today is still muggy and warm with a temp of 70 degrees. A cool front is expected later this PM. There was a huge black cloud in the west, but so far little rain materialized. Right now we do not need any more rain. The plants love this weather, especially the corn that in some fields are is least shoulder high.
7/6/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The hear and high humidity have finally disappeared, at least for the week end, but expected to return sometime nest week.
7/7/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yesterday was a perfect summer day with an intense blue sky with not a cloud in sight all day long. The temp never rose out of the 70's and there was a gentle breeze. Today started out sunny at 59 degrees, felt more like early fall then the middle of the summer. There are a few clouds, and a breeze. A nice day for more outside work!
7/8/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Going to be another beautiful day with warmer temps and low humidity. No rain expected until Tue. night, then in the northern parts of the state.
7/9/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is warmer and a bit more humid. There are some clouds in the sky as well. Yesterday was another beautiful summer day.
7/10/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
7/11/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M There is more humidity today with blue skies and sunshine Storms expected tomorrow PM and evening, some could be severe. We could use some rain as it has been almost a week since our last rain.
7/12/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is going to be hot and humid. The AM temp is already 76 degrees on the way to the 90's with high humidity. Storms already in the northern part of the state, and will be moving south later this PM. We may not get anything! Conditions around here are starting to get dry. I hsve been watering the garden every day, and where I don't the soil is just dust.
7/13/2018 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M The overnight rain missed us by a few miles to the north! The storm this AM also missed us. We got a few drops, but that was all. More expected later. The AM temp was 74 degrees, but very, very humid thanks to the little bit of rain we did receive. Things are very dry now since little rain has fallen in July.
7/14/2018 7:00 AM 1.08 M M M M We finally got some beneficial rainfall. It started to rain as we were coming up the MT Zion hill on Hwy 61 on the way from Boscobel. I continued to rain for probably at least 3 hours. None of the rain was has hard as that that fell in the past storm. There was 0.78 in the gauge when I went to bed, and this AM there was 0.30 more. I did not hear it rain overnight, but my husband says it rained hard!. We sleep upstairs in an A frame where the roof is only about 6' above our head. but we do have a layer of thick roofing ( the stuff they use on the roofs of trailer houses) because we had trouble with leaks on the flat roof.
7/15/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another hot and humid day. Mostly sunny with a few white clouds floating in the blue. The rains did not lower the humidity nor bring in cooler, dryer air. Tomorrow is supposed to be a little cooler and less humid.
7/16/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is less humid with a gentle breeze. Feels great after a couple days of opressive humidity and heat. The rest of the week is supposed to be nice!
7/17/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Much cooler, 65 degrees, with less humidity and bright sunshine. Should be a beautiful summer day for doing outside chores. I have to spray the multiflorarose that is invading the field, and we have to spray along the paved road to give us a place to walk when they coat the blacktop. It has been much too hot to do anything like work outside these past few days!
7/18/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another cooler and less humid day with bright sunshine in a clear blue sky. Rain on the way for Thurs. night!
7/20/2018 7:00 AM 0.63 M M M M Today is cooler, 65 degrees with light rain falling. It started to rain around 8PM and was still raining at 10:00. We really needed this rain, especially for the corn and soybeans. It is supposed to rain all day today. Hope we get more as it was really dry. Again the bulk of the storms went to our north and south.
7/22/2018 7:00 AM T M M M M Today is cloudy and cool, 64 degrees. The rain missed us again! A rather strange pattern on the radar from north to south which is unusual here. Actually most of the day was sunny. Several very dark clouds traversed overhead without dropping any rain at all. Finally, a few drops fell around 5PM and that was it. It seems we either have too much or too little rain here.
7/23/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another cooler day with a temp of 67 degrees and a clear blue sky with bright sunshine. The humidity still seems a bit high, was in the 60's yesterday, and the bucket under the AC has a lot of water in it! Better in there than in the house!
7/24/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful sunny day, although a bit humid. Storms expected tomorrow after a front passes.
7/25/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny so far, but storms on the horizon to the west. The AM temp was a cool 61 degrees. The next few days are expected to be cooler, in fact, the rest of this month and part of Aug. is predicted to be below normal temps. Storms expected in late afternoon.
7/26/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain again yesterday! It seemed we were going to get some; there was a huge black front north of Viroqua when we were there around 3:30PM, but not a drop of rain was produced here. Today dawned very cool, just 63 degrees, with a clear blue sky and sunshine. The next two days are supposed to be cooler than normal with a threat of showers this PM and Sunday. I prefer the cooler weather rather than the 90+ degrees with high humidity.
7/27/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another cool morning with a temp of 58 degrees under a clear blue sky and sunshine. This next week is supposed to be cooler than average with some rain predicted for Sunday.
7/28/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful day with cool temp (55 degrees) and a sunny sky. We could really use some rain around here. It has been a week since we have had any rain, and things are starting to dry up here. Been watering the garden (a few tomato plants in a raised bed) and the flowers in pots along the parking lot and on the bricks by the house. The next few days are supposed to be cooler and dry until Wednesday. The "blood" moon was eautiful last night.
7/29/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M With a starting temp of just 56 degrees, today feels more like mid September than the end of July. State fair starts on Thurs., the time when it is usually gets hot, 90 degrees or so. The poor animals suffer without air conditioning in a stuffy barn or pen. Hope it stays cool at least for the next week or so. I remember my son who was in "Kids from Wisconsin" who perform daily at the fair, his shirt was just soaked with sweat after the performance. The Kids didn't seem to mind too much. Several of them stayed with us in Milwaukee because the dorm was very hot! I think the neighbors thought we were crazy with a trumpet player practicing in the yard. That was in the mid 80's and they are still going strong!
7/30/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M So far a sunny and cool day, but some showers are predicted for this PM. More for tomorrow with the threat of some more severe thunder storms. We could use the rain though!
7/31/2018 7:00 AM T M M M M It rained a few drops yester day PM, not enough to talk about. Today looks to be much of the same with a sunny and cool morning, then showers in the PM.
8/1/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain again yesterday although it thundered for an hour or so around 5PM but the rain never came. Several black clouds in the north that skirted around us and produced rain else where. Perhaps today as showers are predicted again. I put absolutely now hope on this happening. There is something about this area that simply drives the rain away! Today is sunny and cooler with a starting temp of 59 degrees on the way to the high 70's.
8/2/2018 7:00 AM 0.85 M M M M We finally got some measurable rain around 9PM last night. There was a brief shower at suppertime, but the big one came after dark. There was some of the most intense lightning I have seen for a while that lit up the sky for at least a half hour from 9 PM and it was still raining at 10:00. We were starting to get concerned about the crops. I think the corn is at a stage when rain is critical. The farmers are struggling with low prices so they at least need a decent crop this year.
8/3/2018 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M M M Very cool today with a temp of 56 degrees under a sunny sky. Today will be cool, but Sat. expected to be in the 90's again. Perhaps this will be the end of summer heat, but I do not think it will be! We can still have some very hot weather in Sept. and even Oct. at times.
8/4/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is overcast with more humidity with a temp of 70 degrees on the way to 90. Heat indices expected to reach 95 degrees. Do not plan to spent a lot of time out side. I did want to spray some brush along the road that seems to be taking over everywhere. It is something we have not seen around here, at least to this extent. The field is full of it, and we did spray most of that. Those "bushes" have grown very large so we will have to cut then back and spray the stumps. Same with some down along the road. There are some places one does not want to spray brush killer which also kills other plants. We bought what the farmers use which should be effective, more so than the stuff sold for urban use!
8/5/2018 7:00 AM 0.08 M M M M It got very dark and final rained about 8AM. We are abnormally dry according to NWS, so any rain is appreciated. At least we won't have to water the plants today! It did not get as hot as predicted yesterday, and we did have a brief storm with some rain, very little actually. Today is very muggy with a temp of 68 degrees after the rain. Not a good day to spray weeds, but then I have decided to take the Sundays off from working like my Amish neighbors. They will do nothing but the necessary things on Sundays, and always go to church at someone's home every other Sunday.
8/6/2018 7:00 AM 1.10 M M M M We finally got some much needed rain in the wee hours of the morning. My husband said it rained most of the night accounting for the over an inch I measured. We had a couple of small showers during the day, the one around 5PM lasted probably over an hour, but did not produce a whole lot of rain. This will be good for the crops. I finally hoed my glads up in the garden, and the raised beds with the tomatoes which was really dry, yet it has been watered daily. The temps this weekend did not reach the 90's as predicted, and with a nice breeze, it wasn't unpleasant to be outside. The AM temp today was a comfortable 65 degrees, but the humidity is high due to the overnight rains.
8/7/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is cool, 61 degrees, under a cloudy sky. There is a storm out in Iowa moving this way, so we will probably get some rain in a few hours. We can always use some more moisture.
8/8/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A beautiful day so far with a temp of 63 degrees under a clear blue sky with sunshine. Some showers predicted for this PM north of I-94. Yesterday's showers missed up again; some in the southern counties were enough to cdause flooding in Rock Co.
8/9/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is about 10 degrees warmer than it has been all week at 69 degrees. It is also quite humid. In spite of what the weather office says, it is getting very dark, and there is a very small storm on the radar just to our north in Vernon Co. headed this way. Perhaps we will get a little rain out of it. The rain is predicted for this PM.
8/10/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is cooler at 69 degrees under a sunny sky.
8/11/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is sunny with a temp of 69 degrees on the way to perhaps the low 90's. There is haze from Canadian wild fires. No rain expected here. It is starting to get dry again since we have had no rain all week, again!
8/12/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another day like the past few with warm temps and a clear blue sky with sunshine. Today is supposed to be not, almost 90 degree a and dry. Rain could happen on Tues, and definitely on Wed. Time will tell, since they have bin wrong most of the time as of late.
8/13/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another dry, sunny, and very warm day with temps predicted to reach 90 degrees again. Actually, I don't think it made it to 90 yesterday, of course the Crawford Co. Fair starts Thursday, so it is always hot then. Slight rain chances for mid week.
8/14/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another warm day with somewhat overcast skies and a temp of 70 degrees on the way to 90 again. The TV weather said the humidity yesterday was 66%, and it feels at least that high today. Not a good day for outside work or for my sheets to dry. Even when it is sunny, they take over 8 hours and still are not completely dry.
8/15/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Warm, at 68 degree, overcast and very humid.
8/16/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is warm, 67 degrees, overcast, and very humid again. There was rain all around us yesterday P<. but mot a drop here. In spite of the lack of rain, the grass is still pretty green and the crops are predicted to be a bumper year again.
8/17/2018 7:00 AM 0.16 M M M M I was expecting more rain in the gauge after last evening when it was raining quite hard after 9PM, but I was sadly mistaken! More rain is predicted for this PM, so I sincerely hope we get more.
8/18/2018 7:00 AM 0.60 0.0 M M M
8/19/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M An overcast day with a temp of 63 degrees. Today was supposed to be sunny, but it so far it is not!. Rain expected tonight and into tomorrow. A sunny day would be nice!
8/20/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another overcast, warm,68 degrees, and humid day. Rain predicted, perhaps up to 2" this PM. The radar is fixed and there is a big mass south and west of here, but it is moving from east to west, so won't arrive here very soon. Storms are predicted for this PM.
8/21/2018 7:00 AM 0.16 M M M M Many storms, some producing 3" or more of rain passed through SW Wisconsin yesterday PM. We got little rain from the whole thing! The TV news showed pictures of Madison where there was street flooding and a major highway closed down until the rain subsided. Other areas in Dane Co. also had flooding as well as some places down on the state line.
8/22/2018 7:00 AM T M M M M Quite cool today at 56 degrees, th3 coolest it has been for a while. It felt so refreshing to go outside where the humidity was at a normal level! More rain predicted for Friday, but perhaps we will have 2 days of sunshine and low humidity. It already feels like fall with some leaves collecting on the deck and the nut trees are dropping their fruit and tons of apples down from the trees close to the house. Time for a trip to the orchards which are now open for the fall season.
8/23/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day although the clouds did show up later. Today is very cool at just 55 degrees, but sunny. It really does feel and look like fall with some dead tree leaves, acorns, hickory and walnuts down along with many apples. I see the orchards are already picking early variety apples. the cool crisp air is very refreshing after the hot and humid conditions we experienced much of the summer.
8/24/2018 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Apparently we had a rather violent electrical storm overnight, according to my husband, but I did not hear anything. Early this AM I heard rain on the roof for a short period of time. In fact, it is raining now and I think I hear thunder. We certainly could use more rain! What fell this AM was just enough to get the humidity up to uncomfortable levels again.
8/25/2018 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M There was a severe thunder storm warning with perhaps a tornado not too far from here in eastern Iowa, and numerous storms north of us in WI, Madison is praying for no raing; still cleaning up from the storms earlier in the week, but we got barely a few tenths of rain. What is going on here?. This seems to be the pattern here most of the time. Things around here are pretty dry, but amazingly enough, it still looks green here.Today is overcast, but so far no rain.
8/26/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain again! Today is warm, 66 degrees, and humid with bright sunshine in a clear blue sky. I did not realize how dry the ground is until I watched the cloud of dust behind the lawn tractor up in the field that looks very green and is extremely wet with dew in the morning.
8/27/2018 7:00 AM 0.36 M M M M At last we got some much needed rain overnight! All day the storms eluded us and dumped rain again on the areas that do not need any more rain. Madison is still trying to dry out from the last storm and probably got another inch or more yesterday. Today is overcast and it was raining when I went out to retrieve the rain gauge at 7AM. We could use at least an inch or so more. There was much thunder and intense lightning, again overnight. It woke me at 2AM when the lightning lit up the room! It seems to be more intense this year and more frequent.
8/28/2018 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M The very small amount of rain measured today came shortly after 7AM yesterday. The big storm of last PM that dropped as much as 10" of rain not that far to our north (Westby had over 9") did not produce enough rain here to even measure. We have much lightning and some thunder at 10PM, but little or no rain. There is a big storm out in eastern Iowa now, but I seriously doubt that it will ever get here or drop any rain on Wisconsin!
8/29/2018 7:00 AM 1.03 M M M M We finally got some much needed rain here! The problem now is too much rain to our north. The Kickapoo river is supposed to reach flood levels not seen in recent years. I must say we drove around to see the flooding, but could not get to Gays Mills because the river was over the highway we usually take. We have never seen that before! We then dove up to Hwy 61 and on to Soldiers Grove. We encountered a sign saying the road was closed 6 miles ahead. We drove on to Grove for gas, and did not have any problem, bud did not drive down by the river. There are places north of the town where the river comes very close to the road, so that is probably where the flooding is. I called the pharmacy in Grove this AM for a prescription and got a message that it was closed. We drove over there while in town, and it was closed, probably because the pharmacist lives in Viroqua and was not able to get to work. We probably will not get any mail due to the Gays Mills post office being in the flood plane and is under water. They use the PO in Grove, but getting there might be a problem, and too, the mail is sorted in St Paul!
8/30/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M NO rain yesterday or overnight! Today looks to be a beautiful one with bright sunshine in a clear blue sky. Today we will see if the Wisconsin River at Boscobel is high, which I would expect due to the large amounts of rain that fell up north. There is always flooding at the Dells and Portage, and that is where rain fell in buckets, up to 10" in some places.
8/31/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain yet as predicted, but it is a little warmer at 59 degrees. The sky is overcast No rain yet although it was predicted for early this AM. There are still some roads closed around here both Hwy 61 and 60 are closed due to high water. The WI river was just bank full at Boscobel yesterday, but I don't think the crest has come this far south. They are saying this is worse than the flood of 2008, and I tend to agree. I have never seen the Kickapoo over Hwy 131 at Bell Center, nor over the road just east of Wauzeka. Water in the town of Coon Valley has caused Hwy 61 to close. Difficult to get around without running into closed roads.
9/1/2018 7:00 AM 0.66 M M M M It was pouring rain at 7AM. Be careful what you wish for! This area is drowning now In contrast to the very dry conditions earlier last week. If it keeps this up there will be more flooding locally. Because most of the rain fell just north of here, we did not have local flooding except for the Kickapoo which is fed by hills and valleys in the northern counties which some got 10" of more rain last Mon.and Tnes. The Kickapoo did beat the level set in 2008 in Gays Mills. There are still some roads closed around here.
9/2/2018 7:00 AM 0.29 M M M M A warm and humid day again with rain predicted again. In fact, rain is predicted through Wed.! The AM temp was a warm 68 degrees and the humidity high. At least we had a couple of days when the humidity was at a comfortable level. Glad I do not live in Florida!
9/3/2018 7:00 AM 0.58 M M M M It rained off and on most of the day yesterday, sometimes very heavy rain. Today is overcast with the threat of more rain. NWS states that rivers could flood again since this is supposed to last through Wed.
9/4/2018 7:00 AM 3.32 M M M M We had a terrific electrical storm around 2AM with much lightning and loud thunder. Most of the rain fell overnight, although it rained steadily all day long. We are expecting more rain and storms late this PM and into the evening, perhaps worse than today's storms. The rivers must be running high again with all this rain on an already soaked ground. We were wishing for rain; now we wish it would stop!
9/5/2018 7:00 AM 2.66 M M M M Did not hear it raining overnight, but was surprised to find the gauge full again and about 2" in the big tube. The rivers are flooding again, and in spite of our efforts to keep the water from running into the basement, there was some water again this AM. NWS says the rain should end be afternoon. It is so warm and humid here one does not want to venture out. It was raining quite hard at 7AM but has stopped now, but I see on the radar that more is coming! I have to go to Soldiers Grove this PM. Do not anticipate a problem getting there today since there was no mention of severe flooding at Gays Mills this AM. Last week the river was over Hwy 131 and there were warnings about Hyw 61 north of Soldiers Grove but none today.
9/6/2018 7:00 AM 0.08 M M M M The sun is shining in a clear blue sky for a change, and the weather feels settled and less humid. The AM term was a cool 58 degrees. Feels like fall!
9/7/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain to repot today, the first time in almost a week! The local papers stated that this was the worst flood ever on the Kickapoo. From the pictures, I tend to agree with them. Gays mills had over 23" where flood stage is 13". Places in the village that had never flooded did. It appears that they will lose several people will be leaving as they did in 2008. There are very few left in the original village now. It is really sad! Even those who elevated their building after the last flood had damage. Two business on main street that were on higher ground also had water in them.
9/8/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M another cool and overcast morning with a temp of just 53 degrees. Yesterday remained cloudy all day and the temp stayed in the low 70's. The sky is clearing, so perhaps it will become sunny.
9/9/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It appears that a beautiful day is in store! About time! The AM temp was a cool 52 degrees and the sky is an October blue with bright sunshine and little wind.
9/10/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It was just 50 degrees thus AM with the sun shining in a clear blue sky. Yester stayed sunny most of the day, but never got very warm. The rest of the week is supposed to warm up.
9/11/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It's going to be another beautiful day with plenty of sunshine in a clear blue sky. The morning temp was a cool 54 degrees on the way to the mid 70's again.
9/12/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful day in store with sunshine in a clear blue sky with a temp of 56 degrees. Yesterday got warmer than it has been all week with a high of 80 degrees. The rest of this week is supposed to be warm too. Perhaps the last gasp of summer! Of course it always gets warm when school starts, and in my day none of the schools had AC.
9/13/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A little warmer today at 58 degrees with bright sunshine in a clear blue sky again. This is supposed to last at least through the weekend. Actually it is starting to get a little dry around here again. The rain did alleviate the extreme dry conditions that existed before. The final numbers are in and the Kickapoo River rose to the highest level ever. I have never seen the water so high it got into the bank that is almost against the hill on the far side of the Village.
9/14/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today will be a carbon copy of those this past week. The starting temp was little warmer at 58 degrees, but highs in the mid 80's will definitely be much warmer. There is more humidity also making it a very summer-like day. Since we did not get to the Crawford Co. fair, we plan to go to the Vernon Co fair in Viroqua which we did not attend last year but usually do.
9/15/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A little warmer today, 70 degrees at 9AM, and a little more humid as well. Yesterday became quite warm, some places over 85 degrees. It felt very hot in the sun in mid afternoon. This will definitely be the last gasp of what has been a very warm summer.
9/16/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Warmer yet today at 64 degrees with sunshine in a clear blue sky. Yesterday felt more like mid July then the middle of September with a south wind, some humidity and sunshine. Today looks to me much the same, but rain is in the forecast for next week. Actually it is getting dry again around here, so some rain will be welcomed, just hope it doesn't last for a week and brings flooding again.
9/17/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is going to be another hot one, although rain is predicted for late afternoon as a cold front is going to move in. The AM temp was 70 at 9AM and it will probably reach the mid to high 80's again. Ready for some fall weather!
9/18/2018 7:00 AM 1.41 M M M M I went out to the gauge expecting to see perhaps 0.5" instead there was water in the big tube as well! It did rain hard around 9PM and then I heard it raining twice in the night. It was a gentle rain, no huge down pours, so hopefully most of it soaked in. I think the crops have all stopped growing and the beans are starting to turn yellow now. Our tomato vines are mostly dead, but the red raspberries are showing signs of a fall crop which is usually better than the earlier one.
9/20/2018 7:00 AM 1.33 M M M M Today is overcast with a little rain falling. There was 0.6" of rain after a downpour just before noon, then it did not rain until after 10PM. I could hear it raining during the night, but since it did not do any damage to out revised drainage system it must not have been a hard rain! More in store for today! Once it starts raining it just cannot seem to stop.
9/21/2018 7:00 AM 0.79 M M M M We did not get the storm here until after 11PM. There were even tornado warnings for Sulk Co and others earlier in the late afternoon. We were in Viroqua and left about 11:30 AM. There was this huge black front just to the north that appeared to be capable of some very bad weather. It must have stayed to the north, because we did not get any rain at all then. Just as well, since everything is saturated here and the rivers are expected to rise again. This week end is the Gays Mills Apple Fest that got post poned a couple of years ago because of flooding. Another one would simply be too much!
9/23/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is bright and sunny with the feel of fall in the air. Actually, it is fall as of yesterday. The leaves are falling in droves, and the walnuts are starting to drop along with a million pine cones. It appears that the hickory nuts have all fallen already, what few there are. The leaves on some of the trees on the hillsides are also starting to turn. Where did the summer go? Soon we will have frost, then snow won't be far behind.
9/25/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today is overcast and warmer with a temp of 60 degrees. A cold front expected in late afternoon will change the warmth to chilly, cooler conditions and rain. The past two days were perfect with sunshine in a bright blue October sky and temps well into the 70's.
9/26/2018 7:00 AM 1.10 M M M M We got some needed rain yesterday. It came down hard for a period of 3 or 4 hours. It finally stopped in time for dog walks at 4PM. There was still water running in the big gully that ends at the bottom of the hill next to the Hwy. There was now washing of the road, however. Our water diversion tactics worked well as there was no water in the basement! Frost expected on Friday night.
9/27/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Woke up to what I thought was a clear sunny day only to see rain not too long after. The sun, rising in the east below a bank of overcast, shot pink rays through the many jet contrails there making a beautiful picture. There is supposed to be light rain off and on all day. The AM temp was a cool 45 degrees.
9/28/2018 7:00 AM 0.07 M M M M Today is chilly and overcast with a temp of 49 degrees. It rained off and on yesterday, but did not produce much. Tonight is supposed to be the first frost of the season, but we may escape since NWS says those close to the Mississippi River may stay a bit warmer. If it freezes, so be it. I have tried to save plants when there is an early Sept. frost, but this late is usually not worth the bother. We bring some of the things that are in pots into the house and save them for next season like spikes. I have some that have overwintered for two years and have grown quite large. We have a large east window with a ledge for plants.
9/29/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It did not freeze overnight as predicted by the TV and weather people. It was 38 degrees here and felt quite cool last evening, but did not come close to 32 degrees. We did turn on the gas furnace (no wood in the house), which felt good. Today we go out and cut some more wood. Better to do it now rather than wait for the snow which could come in a month. At least now with the new Ranger, putting on the snow plow blade will not be an all day task, at least I hope so. Rain is expected tonight and for the next couple of days, so best to do the wood now!
9/30/2018 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M A dark and dreary day with a little rain falling. It is supposed to rain more tonight through Monday, sometimes heavy. All we need is more flooding.
