We awoke to snow on the ground (temperature at 07:00 was +1 degrees C)so the precipitation in the gauge was a combination of rain, snow and melted snow.
11/9/2019 8:45 AM 0.23 3.0 0.23 4.7 0.38 The value of 5.9 mm above was taken from the melted value of snow from the core on the snow board. The value from the snow gauge was actually 4.3 mm.
11/10/2019 7:25 AM 0.02 0.2 0.02 M M Both the gauge and the core yielded 0.378 mm measured by the weight of the snow. Measuring the water from the melted snow resulted in values of ~0.25 mm for the core and ~0.2 mm for the gauge. The temperature at 07:25 was +1 degrees Celsius. The depth of new snow on the snow board was an approximate average as it looked quite variable.
11/11/2019 8:15 AM 0.08 0.0 M T M The value of 2.0 mm from above was determined by weight. The water that was poured into the inner graduated cylinder from the outer cylinder (used since there was the possibility of snow) measured 1.8 mm ( there were a lot of water droplets on the inner surface of the outer cylinder that did not make it into the inner cylinder).
11/12/2019 7:52 AM 0.21 0.8 0.21 M M The value of 5.4 mm above came from the snow from the core taken from the snow board. Snow and melted snow/rain in outer cylinder of gauge resulted in 4.4 mm.
11/13/2019 7:10 AM 0.55 1.2 0.13 1.2 M There was a fair amount of rain falling during the day and evening (which melted the snow on the ground) and then snow overnight. The value of 14.0 above was determined by the weighing method of the outer cylinder of the gauge which contained ice (from frozen rain water and melted snow) and snow that didn't melt. The values of 3.0 and 3.2 were derived from the core from the snow board.

Some light rain stated at ~10:30 pm last night which would not have been taken into account with those values. But checking the snow gauge this morning, there was only 6.2 mm total melted snow and rain. The temperature was 2C at observation time. The values from the core last night were used above and for total depth as well since there was probably only a trace of snow on the ground when the snow started. Depth of snow this morning on the patio which was ~7.5 cm last night was only about 4.5 cm this morning and yielded 7.2 mm of SWE which did not include a layer of ice on the surface which did not come up with the core.

1/5/2020 8:04 AM 0.04 0.3 0.04 M M Fine-grained snow falling at observation time. Temp. was minus 0.5 C. The measurements were done by weighing and the first values obtained were 0.63 mm using previously obtained weights for the outer cylinders but the outer cylinders were re-weighed after and both were 2 gms lighter and so the corrected values were 0.882 mm. This would round up to 0.9 mm but when I entered 0.9, it was automatically further rounded up to 1.0 mm.
1/6/2020 8:58 AM 0.15 M M M M Windy conditions resulted in very little snow remaining on the snow board (depth of ~0.2 cm and 0.3 mm SWE). This snow was likely from snowfall after the wind dropped in the last couple of hours. The value of 3.7 was from the snow in the outer gauge. No values were entered for new snowfall and total snow and ice. Very light snow flurries were occurring at observation time with very little wind and the temp. was minus 6 C.

Light snow flurries were occurring at the time of observation.

1/17/2020 8:20 AM 0.06 0.6 0.12 M M Strong winds overnight and at observation time. Snow and blowing snow at observation time. The depth of the snow on the snow board varied from zero to ~3.5 cm. A core was taken at ~1.5 cm and gave an SWE of 3.0 mm. The snow in the gauge gave an SWE of 1.5 mm. I have no idea of what best reflects how much snow actually fell!
1/18/2020 8:40 AM 0.28 1.6 0.28 M M Strong winds most of yesterday until ~midnight. Temp. at obs. time = minus 18C. Gauge yielded only 1.0 mm SWE. The depth of new snow on the snow board varied between ~3.5 and 4.5 cm. A core was taken at ~4.0 cm and yielded 7.1 mm SWE so this value was used above instead of the 1.0 mm.
1/19/2020 8:45 AM 0.15 2.2 0.15 M M Moderate snow falling at observation time. Temperature was ~minus 10C. The gauge only yielded 1.8 mm SWE. The value from SWE of the core from the snow board (3.9) was used above.
1/20/2020 8:30 AM 0.21 2.0 0.17 11.8 2.57 Fairly steady snow yesterday with some wind followed by some freezing drizzle in the evening then more snow. There was a little ice accretion on the gauge. Temp. max up to minus 3C dropping to minus 6C by observation time. Snow flurries still occurring this morning. Total depth of snow was measured at 12:45. The depth varied from 15 to 35 cm, not including an icy layer (~5 cm deep)at the ground level which the outer cylinder did not penetrate. A core was taken at 25 cm and then another core of the icy layer was taken by cutting around another outer cylinder with a kitchen knife. The 25 cm snow core yielded an SWE of 40.6 mm and the ~5 cm icy core yielded an SWE 24.7 mm for a total for the ~30 cm of 65.3 mm

2/8/2020 8:05 AM 0.99 2.8 0.94 7.9 M At obs. time, mostly clear but with SW-- and light winds; temp. minus 9C. Past 24 hours complicated: mostly ice pellets and some freezing precip. which prob. stopped at ~10:00 p.m. last night. I measured the precip. at 10:20 p.m. when the temperature was +1C and it was calm. There were ~3.0 mm of ice accretion although the ice had probably already started to melt a bit. The gauge yielded 11.7 mm SWE and core which was ~5.0 cm deep yielded 20.2 mm (which didn't include a crust of ice on the snow board). Because of the relatively light winds during the day, I feel the core value was more representative. Overnight, there were some snow flurries and strong winds and the temp. dropped. At obs. time this morning, the gauge yielded 4.0 mm SWE and the core which was ~2.0 cm deep yielded 2.7 mm. In this case, I felt, because of the strong winds, that the gauge value was more representative of what precip. fell. So what I feel is most representative would be 21.2 mm from the core last night plus 4.0 from the gauge this morning to result in 25.2 mm which I have entered above. The total depth of snow and ice varied fro ~10 cm to ~25 cm with a crust near the top of 3-5 cm which in places was covered by drifted snow (commonly 5.0 cm, but deeper in deeper drifts). There is also probably still a crust of 5.0 cm at the bottom next to the ground. So, I guess I could throw in an estimate of an average of 20 cm. for Depth of Total Snow and Ice.

Snow in gauge yielded 4.7 mm SWE while the core from the snow board at 3.5 cm of depth yielded 5.9 cm SWE which is the value I used above because it seemed more representative of the snow fall.

2/28/2020 8:00 AM 0.76 2.0 0.73 M M At obs. time, mostly clear, very light wind, temp. = minus 4C. Complicated precip. yesterday. Very light snow first noticed at 12:35, settled in to be moderate by 13:30. Snow became heavy during the afternoon with some very strong ENE winds. During the evening, lots of ice pellets and some freezing rain contributed to ice accretion. The temperature rose above freezing in the evening and overnight but by obs. time had dropped to minus 4C. Despite the melting that had occurred, there was still at least 1 mm of ice accretion on the gauge at obs. time. Because of the strong winds which I believe would have blown the snow off the snow board, I don't know which values for precip. better represent reality but I feel that both the 19.4 mm from the snow gauge and the 18.5 mm from the core from the snow board probably underrepresent what actually fell.

3/2/2020 7:10 AM 0.35 3.4 0.35 15.7 4.80 Mostly cloudy, light winds, temp. = minus 4C. Gauge yielded 6.3 mm SWE while the core from the snowboard yielded 8.9 mm SWE. I have no idea which is more representative of actual snowfall. I was expecting the core to yield fewer mm of SWE because some of the snow was melting on contact on my deck and path but there was a crust of icy snow at the base of the core which I was able to scrape up and include in the core measurement so I decided to put 8.9 above. Between ~1220 and 1240 pm, I tried to get an idea of the depth of total snow and ice and a core sample. It was difficult because of several icy layers cause by ice pellets and freezing precip. I ended up using a small shovel, an ice chopper and a carving knife and had to dig up a large area around the gauge in order to use the spatula to withdraw the core and then another gauge and the carving knife to try and get a core of the very icy layer near the ground.

3/18/2020 7:40 AM 0.04 0.4 0.04 13.8 5.97 Clear, moderate NW winds, temp. = minus 2C. A little ice accretion on gauge from freezing drizzle (or freezing rain). Precip. in gauge yielded 0.9 mm SWE while the core yielded 1.1 mm SWE. 1.1 mm used above rather than the 0.9 mm. Between ~13:10 and ~14:10, I performed total depth of snow and ice measurements. As there were several ice layers, this required several different tools: a small shovel, an ice chopper, a kitchen knife, a large metal serving spoon and all three snow gauges. One gauge was used to get the core down to the first ice layer about 12 cm down (it yielded 46.5 mm SWE); the second gauge to the next ice layer, ~12 cm further down (which yielded 55,7 mm) and the third gauge down to the next layer ~5 cm further. That solid ice layer (~6 cm deep down to the ground) had to be chipped out with the kitchen knife and added (along with some attached grass!)to the third gauge which yielded 49.5 mm SWE.

3/25/2020 8:05 AM 0.11 0.4 0.11 M M Clear, calm, temp. = minus 6C. Heavy frost this morning. I measured the snow yesterday evening at 18:05. At that time it was overcast with moderate to strong N winds, temp. was 0C and the snow had stopped at ~17:15. During the afternoon the temperature had been up to +2C and the wind was quite strong. The snow in the gauge yielded only 1.3 mm of SWE (it was actually liquid in the gauge). The depth of icy snow on the snow board varied from 0 to ~2 cm. I took a core at the deepest part and it yielded 5.8 mm SWE. Divide both by 2 to get an average depth of 1 cm and an SWE of 2.9. I have no idea which value best reflects reality but I will go with 2.9 mm above and below.

3/27/2020 7:00 AM 0.07 0.4 0.03 M M Overcast, moderate N winds, temp. = 0C. Snow was melting on contact during the afternoon and early evening so new snowfall measurements from the snow board (depth varied from 0.5 cm to 2.0 cm; avg. ~1.0 cm) not reflective of the actual snowfall.

4/11/2020 7:40 AM 0.13 1.4 0.07 3.1 M Mostly clear, moderate W winds, temp. = 0C. Very tricky conditions for snow measurements. Strong winds all yesterday with some periods of moderate snow, some periods of rain, some periods and rain and snow mixed. Temperatures up to +3C and almost always at or above zero so a lot of snow that did fall melted so values from the core taken from the snow board (depth ~3.5 cm and SWE of 1.8 mm) are obviously not representative of total precip. The SWE of the gauge (3.2 mm) is probably an underestimate because of the strong winds but is probably a better estimate of the total precipitation. Depth of total snow and ice on the ground varied between 5 cm and 11 cm.
4/12/2020 7:32 AM T 0.0 0.00 T M Mostly clear, light to moderate W winds, temp. = +1C. A little frost still on the grass and vehicles. The precipitation gauge with the funnel and inner graduated cylinder were brought in last night at 23:25 as wet snow had started and the temp. was +2 and forecast to drop further overnight. It was replaced by an outer cylinder only. There was 9.4 mm in the gauge at that time and another 5.9 mm in the outer cylinder this morning. The core (~1.5 cm deep) resulted in 5.4 mm SWE. I feel that the 5.9 mm from the gauge is probably more representative of the total precipitation because of melting of some of the snow on the snow board. This would bring the total precip. in the gauge to 15.3 mm.
