Snow ended before 6am. Given that more snow is on its way in three days, there is a non-zero chance that this is the onset of winter snowpack(!). This would put it into the company of 2002 (same onset on 23rd, but traced out on February 2nd before resuming for another 85 days on the 3rd) and 1997 (24 October through May 3rd, still the all-time record-holder). Calendar-day totals of 0.65/8.2" were both daily records, and so is this morning's snow depth of 10".

Both the Tmax of 11F and the Tmin of -12F are NEW records for October (old ones were 13F and -2F, so the Tmin record is really extreme). Snowdrifts not too bad due to repeated melting and refreezing conditions in previous two days (much worse in January 2007 when we hit 100mph after a total of six feet of snow in two weeks). November ended up with 1.97" of precipitation (ranked 6th out of 30) and 35.2" (4th). Temperatures were just about normal (-0.0F compared to the 30yr average), with frequent inversions below us to give most of the plains stations below-normal averages.

Underperforming storm, also mixed precipitation in PM that lowered snow:H2O ratio in early portion (0.03/0.1" by midnight). Off and on fog last evening, so there was plenty of moisture, it just did not fall out over us.

3/11/2020 7:00 AM 0.06 0.6 M 14.5 M Tmax: 42; Tmin: 27 before midnight/26 since then. Evening snow had subsided by the time I got up here (11pm MDT). Roads were wet in Jamestown (<7K), while snow cover on roads was confined to elevations well above 8K (top of switchbacks). This jives with evening radar loops that showed spill-over snows peaking around 8pm. There was NO water in inner funnel, so this was (almost) all snow. Early wind gusts to 50mph. {Corrected typo on snow depth, it was 14.5", not 15.5"}

3/18/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 11.5 M Tmax: 53; Tmin: 24 yestermorning/25 since midnight. Big storm bearing down on us tomorrow, a lot of similarities to the late November 2019 storm, except that this one will be a lot warmer.

Melange of initial rain (0.01"), snow pellets (graupel), and snow. 27F this morning and steady light snow (to increase shortly!). Before I forget, got a neighbor's report of thunder at 4:52pm yesterday, quite possibly the first of the season. Another neighbor (about 0.6 miles to my northwest as the crow flies) just told me that there was plenty of lightning and up to 2" of soft hail with this, compared to 0.5" for me.

Highest wind gust from the north around 4pm (G34) to bring in colder air and lower snowfall rates. Foggy off and on overnight. Storm totals: 2.12/21.1" (almost perfect 10 to 1 ratio). Snow depth varies from bare ground (1/4 coverage) to about two feet for the usual 'beached whale' locations (mainly on north side of trees). Will be interesting to see how much snowpack we will lose before cooling off again in about three days, ahead of potential big storm in about six days.

All-time Tmax record for April is 16F back in 1997, will make a run for that one today. The Tmin record of -6 set in '97 and '13 appears safe for now.

Definitely on track for driest summer (May-August) on record, would need another 1.73" to have more rain than in 2002!

9/8/2020 7:00 AM 0.27 0.5 M 0.5 M Tmax: 78 (tied daily record)/Tmin: 32 by midnight MST (missed daily record by 1F)/23 since then (coldest so early on record, but will get colder later today). Historic 24h change in temperature, high was in high 70sF mid-day, dropped to 32F by midnight, and 23F this morning. Drizzle began just before midnight, mixed with sleet in early morning hours, and mostly snow (still some sleet) this morning, hence the low snow:precipitation ratio.
9/9/2020 7:00 AM 0.67 5.7 M 4.0 M Tmax: 25 since 7am yesterday (earliest Tmax at or below freezing on record) - even the calendar-daily high was only 32F; Tmin: 18 by midnight/17 since then (both daily records, also for so early in season). Partial precipitation measurements: 1.3" (0.23") by 11:50am; 3.2" (0.30) by 6:30pm (heaviest snow was from about 3-6pm, close to 1"/h); 1.2" (0.14) by midnight, and only a trace since then. Peak snow depth close to 5" around midnight. Power went out from 5:30-7:40pm, although I did not see any downed tree branches. Calendar-daily totals of 0.86/6.2" were not high enough to break records set in 2001: 1.04/11.6" (!). This was the 2nd earliest snowfall on record (2001 storm started one day earlier).
9/10/2020 7:00 AM 0.05 0.4 M 3.5 M Tmax: 29 (two days in a row below freezing in September - a first in 31 years of record-keeping!); Tmin: 19 yestermorning/21 since midnight. Snow fell mid-day and after midnight (0.03/0.2&0.02/0.2). There was a brief moment of sunshine around 5pm, not enough to raise temperatures above freezing mark for yet another record-cold day. Dirt roads are muddy, and footsteps have ice in them. Many aspen have turned straight from green to brown fringes, will be interesting to see how many will show regular fall colors. It is my impression that those leaves that had turned early (to yellow) are the ones that turned fully brown with this cold snap.
9/11/2020 7:00 AM 0.03 0.1 M 2.0 M Tmax: 37 (record)/Tmin: 26 yestermorning/29 since midnight (not a record). Evening show/rain mix showers, giving me a storm total of 1.02/6.7", a bit underwhelming after all (compared to expectations), but the first storm of this caliber in 19 years (12.3" in 2001 on September 7-8 which remains my earliest measurable snow on record). Sunny morning with a breeze from the west for the first time in four days. Snow cover has thinned out, but still close to 4" in shade. Will call it a trace by tomorrow.
