Until yesterday we had never seen rain on Christmas Day since we moved here in 1980. After looking quite convective in the afternoon with some dark clouds finally got some precip beginning about 1530 and it was R- to R--. Interesting day, finally some rain. Began with some sprinkles at 0700 (T). Then a thunderstorm ~1400-1430 but discouraged that only dropped 0.01". However then an extended period of mainly R- ~1615-~1830, a little thunder at first, dropped 0.14". R- began again at 2045 and continued into the night with another 0.09" |

Already the most 1-day precip since 27 Jun. Mix of light rain and snow falling at 0700 with temp of 33 (also low). Evidence this has been going on since before 0700 with some wet ice splotches on the board. Double frontal passage Sunday, first wind shift to gusty N-NE winds about 1600 LT brought the smoke back in, then colder temps with second surge ~1930. High was 84. R- began by 2230 with temp of 48, at 0300 down to 37 with drizzle and 0.18". |

I have been taking records in Boulder since 1980, this is the earliest measurable snow (previous earliest trace amounts 11-12 Sep 1989 and 13 Sep 2014. First Sep measurable snow since 5.9" 23-24 Sep 2000. Snow yesterday was S- for much of the day, mixed with rain/drizzle at times morning into the afternoon but mainly snow after ~0830. 0700-1200: 0.2" slushy snow with 0.20" melted, 1200-1700 another 0.2 (mainly >1630)/0.12"; heaviest snow (S to a little S+) from 1630-2030, by 2100 had another 2.0" with 2.0 on the ground (shook off some trees, no branches down that I saw). Overnight only some S- for the most part with 0.3, already spots of grass showing through the snow cover. Low barely down to 31, most of the time was 32 after 1700. 0.37" of melted 1700-0700. 32 at 0700, no precip falling (a little drizzle at 0730). Storm total precip was 0.99" |
