Moderate snow continued after observation yesterday. Snowflakes changed dimension from large flakes to small flakes around 8:10am. Overcast thinned enough by 9:00am to warm surfaces for snowmelt. The highest recorded snow depth measured was 5.9" at 10:00am. Although the snow continued to fall, solar influence had the upper hand and snow began to melt down and by 12:00pm was at 5.2". As a result, calculated highest snow depth from the snow depth at yesterday's observation to the 7:00am observation yesterday for new snowfall. Snow was very light and fluffy and did not end until after sunset. Unknown duration. Dense freezing fog began forming after 3:00pm with visibility slowly lowering and by 5:00pm was at or below 100 yds. Hourly snowfall totals yesterday were: 8:00am 5.2", 9:00am 5.6", 10:00am 5.9", 11:00am 5.7" 12:00pm 5.2". Snowfall intensity began tapering off after 12:30pm and became flurries after 2:00pm. |

After observation yesterday, occasional snow flakes transitioned to light snow showers by 7:10am. Light snow pellets at 9:30am with strong north wind. By 9:50 snow pellets began a slow transition to snow with stronger wind. At 10:15am snow/snow pellets turned to heavy snow with even stronger wind to near blizzard conditions. Near blizzard to occasional blizzard conditions the remainder of the day until about the 4:00pm hour when the atmosphere began to settle. First precipitation event came from a thunderstorm that developed east of Pikes Peak and we were grazed by the northern edge of the storm. Precipitation was very light and began as rain/graupel mix then changed to graupel attached to hexagonal ice about the size of a grain of rice. The graupel came apart on impact. This began at exactly 1:58pm and ended by 2:07pm. There were over ten claps of thunder with this event from cloud to cloud lightning. The next event began as graupel then changed to light rain in about 2 minutes. There was no thunder associated with this event. However, the precipitation was heavy enough to wet the patio where as the first event barely made it damp. The second event began at exactly 3:13pm and ended at 3:46pm. After 3:30pm it was mainly light sprinkles. There was one bird dropping in the rain gauge. |

Witnessed three precipitation events yesterday. First at about 3:34 as a light thundershower which transitioned to heavier rain shower at 4:31pm and continued until about 5:10pm. Then I left the area until returning during 6:00pm hour. At 6:31pm sprinkles transitioned to rain then heavier rain with small hail at 6:47pm. This was reported in the Significant WX. This ended around 6:53pm. The last event was heard on the roof at 10:29pm as a rain shower with no thunder heard which lasted about 5 min. Most of the precipitation fell during the 6:31pm event. No ponding of water or runoff. Topsoil is moist this morning. |

First distant thunder heard at 12:16pm from the NW. Next closer thunder heard at 12:42pm with first raindrops. At 1:01pm raindrops turned to very large raindrops but widely scattered. 1:06pm Very large raindrops began to increase in intensity and did see a couple of very small hail stones smaller than a BB. One hit the patio with a slushy texture and that occurred in less than 10 sec. At 1:10pm wind increased from the north momentarily. Moderate rain began to decrease in intensity at 1:22pm, then increase again at 1:27pm with calm wind. Rain decreased to a sprinkle at 1:39pm and ended by 1:48pm. Second precipitation event was another thunderstorm that was just to our west and we received mostly light rain beginning at 2:20pm with light wind. Large raindrops at 2:44pm and this ended at 2:55pm. Most if not all of the lightning with both events was cloud to cloud with low-level rumbles of thunder. Estimated precipitation totals was .17" for first event and .03" for the second event. |
