10/10/2019 7:00 AM 0.15 1.9 0.14 2.0 0.13 A truly amazing weather day! The temperature peaked at 80.2F at 3:35pm MDT under mostly sunny skies. A extremely strong cold front barreled down the Front Range and crossed the station at 3:45pm with a wind shift from SSE to NNE and peak gust 26 mph at 4:00pm (note: the station is partially blocked by trees to the north, reducing northerly wind speeds). The temperature plummeted thereafter: 80F (3:50pm), 60F (4:50pm), 48F (5:50pm), 43F (6:50pm), 40F (7:50pm), 37F (8:50pm), 32F (9:50pm), 30F (10:50pm), 29F (11:50pm), 24F (3:50am). The calendar-day (9 October 2019) high/low temperature was 80.2F/29.1F, resulting in a 51.1F temperature drop (in 8 hours). The overnight low temperature was 21.5F, resulting in a 7am-7am 24-hour temperature change of 58.7F. The strong dynamics of the storm system initiated thunderstorms in the Fort Collins-Loveland area (and to our east). A thunderstorm with vivd lightening, loud thunder, and heavy pea-sized opaque hail occurred between 8:45-8:55pm. Flurries 8:55-9:05pm, and more pea-sized hail, thunder, and lightning 9:05-9:15pm... when the temperature was 34F! The hail accumulated to 0.25" on the ground. I had the inner tube in the rain gauge, and some hail likely bounced out (I took the inner tube out at 9:00pm). -SN 9:15-11:00pm, and then -SN 1:30am through the 7:00am observation with a period of SN around 6:30am. 10 Oct 2019 observation weather: SN, 22F, wind NE 4G12 mph, wind chill 17F, visibility around 1-2 miles. At Christman Field (CSU Foothills campus), the 7am-7am 24-hour temperature max/min/range was 80.3F/19.9F/60.4F. The same readings for the CSU main campus station were 79.0F/22.0F/57.0F. 10/27/2019 7:00 AM 0.02 0.3 0.01 T T Another very large temperature drop. A high-level mountain wave cloud formed on the early morning of 27 October 2019 but dissipated by late morning. Temperatures rose to 74.4F under sunny skies with light NE winds. A dry cold front swept through at 4:45pm MDT -- no immediate increase in cloudiness or even a shift in wind direction, but increased wind speeds and sharply colder temperatures. The temperature fell from 74F (4:40pm) to 55F (5:40pm) to 46F (6:40pm) and into the 30s F by 8:00pm. -SN began soon after midnight and continued off and on through the 7:00am 27 Oct observation. Snow measurement on the ground was technically 0.2" but was difficult to measure accurately and was rounded to a trace to conform with the rounding protocol (some melting of the initial snow as it contacted the warm ground). At the 7:00am 27 Oct observation: -SN, 23F, winds NNE 4G11 mph, wind chill 18F.
10/28/2019 7:00 AM 0.21 2.6 0.21 2.5 0.15 Persistent -SN throughout the period, with isolated periods of snow grains (12:00-12:20pm MDT) and SN during the early afternoon. Very cold, with a 27 Oct high/low temperature of 31F (12:00am) and 18F (9:50pm) and daytime temperature lingering in the low-mid 20s F. At the 7:00am 28 Oct observation: Overcast, 17F, winds SSE 3G6 mph, wind chill 12F. Overnight low 16.5F at 3:10am. Total liquid-equivalent precipitation sourced from the new snow on the snow board as undercatch suspected from the cylinder (which only melted down to 0.13").
10/29/2019 7:00 AM 0.12 2.3 0.12 3.5 0.18 -SN from 7:00am MDT and tapering off around 8:30am. Mostly sunny but very cold through the day, with a 28 Oct 2019 high/low of 28F/17F. Periods of -SN and SN from 3:30-7:00am. Liquid-equivalent of new snow as measured on snow board was substituted for liquid equivalent from cylinder gauge (undercatch suspected, melted content of cylinder gauge only showed 0.09"). A cold front reinforced the existing cold air, passing over the station around 4:30am and causing the temperature to drop from a steady 21F into the low teens with winds to 17 mph and windchills down to around 0F. The temperature continues to fall at the 7:00am (29 Oct) reading: -SN, 13F, winds N 5G11 mph, windchill 4F.
10/30/2019 7:00 AM 0.18 2.5 0.18 5.0 0.41 Near-continuous -SN 7:00am-5:30am MDT (most of the period). Periods of SN around 7:30am and 2:00-2:45pm. Visibilities frequently below 1 mile during the day. Very cold: 29 Oct high/low temperature 22F/8F, with daytime temperature 11-14F (22F reading was at 3:50am). Overnight low 6.6F (prior to 7:00am observation). At the 7:00am observation: Overcast, +7F, winds SW 3G6mph, windchill +1F. [Note: liquid equivalent precipitation from snow board was 0.27" (weighed), yet liquid equivalent from cylinder was only 0.20" (weighed) and 0.18" (melted). The 0.27" seems a little high given totals from around the area. I will use the melted gauge value as the total liquid equivalent precipitation reading to be consistent with neighboring values.]

A significant weather report was made. Hail was hard and opaque white, some stones 0.5" in diameter. Total precipitation may be underestimated as the inner funnel was in the rain gauge (I was not expecting hail!). The trace of "snowfall" was due to hail only (I categorize "snowfall" as any frozen precipitation). Hail still covered parts of the lawn in the morning.
3/20/2020 7:00 AM 0.79 5.0 0.70 5.0 0.70 Nearly continuous rain then snow. -RA 7:00-8:00am MDT, RA 8:00-9:15am, -SN 9:15am-2:00pm, SN 2:00-5:00pm with occasional +SN, then -SN gradually tapering to flurries 5:00pm-7:00am. Liquid equivalent precipitation in gauge may be underestimated due to caking of snow covering most of gauge opening and growing 3-4" high. See notes below for explanation of precipitation estimates. At the 20 March 7:00am observation: -SN, 20F, winds N5G9 mph, wind chill 14F. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Notes on how the precipitation was measured and potential errors. The following were measured for the 24-hr period ending at 7:00am MDT on 20 March 2020: 1) Liquid equivalent (melted contents of CoCoRAHS gauge): 0.68" 2) Depth of snow on snow board (and liq. equiv.): 4.7" (0.58") 3) Depth of snow on ground (and liq. equiv.): 5.5" (1.03") Note A: The large difference between (2) and (3) above is not easily explained. First, there was no snow on the ground during the previous period, so all snow was "new". Snow board depth (2) may be less than snow-on-ground depth (3) due to (a) drifting off of slightly elevated snow board or (b) a modest drift-depositing of snow on the ground around the elevated snow board; in any case, this cannot fully explain the large difference in liquid equivalents. Moderate rain fell just before the snowfall... perhaps the "ground" snow absorbed moisture from underneath (the grass) like a sponge, which the "board" snow would not be able to do? Note B: Liquid equivalent precipitation in gauge was underestimated due to caking of snow covering most of gauge opening and growing 3-4" high. I "swatted" the caked snow down into the gauge opening prior to melting, but some fell out. *** Discussion continued on 21 March 2020 entry ***
3/21/2020 7:00 AM 0.02 0.1 0.02 4.5 0.37 Intermittent light flurries 7:00am-2:00pm MDT, then a period of -SN 4:00-4:40pm. Unusually cold, with a high of 26F (at 5:40pm). Liquid equivalent amount of total snow on ground may be underestimated as the bottom layer was icy and not easily removed from the grass. *** Continued discussion from 20 March 2020 *** Note C: The CoCoRAHS gauge almost never produces a precipitation amount -less- than the heated tipping bucket gauge. Over the period 18-20 March 2020, the tipping bucket gauge recorded 1.14" of precipitation. This included rain and (melted) hail and snow. We must assume that the CoCoRAHS gauge (the "truth") must be at least this amount. I am confident in the 0.31" precipitation estimate for the 24-hr period ending on 19 March 2020 at 7:00am MDT. That leaves 1.14" – 0.31" = 0.81" of liquid equivalent precipitation for the 48-hr period period ending 21 March 2020. I am confident that 0.02" of liquid equivalent fell for the 24-hr period ending on 21 March 2020 at 7:00am MDT. That leaves 0.79" of liquid equivalent for the 24-hr period ending on 20 March at 7:00am MDT. This is considered a conservative estimate as the CoCoRAHS gauge often produces precipitation amounts that are ~10-15% higher than the tipping bucket gauge. *** Discussion continued on 22 March 2020 ***
3/22/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.5 0.11 Rapidly melting snow cover. Lawn coverage approximately 40%. Where there is snow cover, the depth was 1.5" and liquid equivalent 0.28". *** Continued discussion from 20-21 March 2020 *** Note D: How much of the 0.79" total precipitation was from snow? The tipping bucket gauge can be used to estimate how much rain fell prior to the start of the snow on the morning of 19 March. The tipping bucket gauge recorded 0.23" of rainfall between 7:00am-9:20am, which is about when the rain changed to snow. Importantly, however, significant hail fell late on 18 March. The tipping bucket gauge heater was not turned on for the hail, and it underestimated the precipitation amount (relative to the melted contents of the CoCoRAHS gauge) by 0.14". It is likely that 0.14" of the 0.23" was contributed by melting of residual hail in the tipping bucket gauge. I therefore estimate that the true amount of rainfall from 7:00-9:20am MDT on 19 March was 0.09", leaving 0.70" for the liquid equivalent of new snowfall after 9:20am. This results in a "wet" snow:rain ratio of 7:1, which is reasonable given air temperatures in the 31°-34°F. Note E: I will use a 5.0" estimate for both new snow and total snow depth as this represents a compromise between (1) and (2) above. From Note C, I will use the conservative 0.79" estimate for total liquid equivalent precipitation. Following Note D, I will also use the estimate of 0.70" for liquid equivalent of new snow and "ground snow. These snow and liquid equivalent amounts are largely consistent with neighboring CoCoRAHS readings and the CSU main campus weather station (7 miles to the north). Further, the 5.0" snow depth is consistent with the 4.5" total snow depth reading on 21 March.
