Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
3/9/2020 6:00 AM 0.16 M M M M Light rain underway, beginning at about 2:15 a.m. according to KCCI radar.
3/10/2020 6:00 AM 0.45 M M M M I recorded .16 inches of rain at 6 a.m. March 9 and emptied the gauge. I recorded another .45 inches of rain at 10:50 p.m. March 9, after rainfall ended. I emptied the guage then, ahead of a freeze.
3/13/2020 6:00 AM T M M M M From light sprinkles late morning on March 12.
3/15/2020 6:00 AM 0.06 M M M 0.06 Moisture is from a wet snow-sleet mix that began at about 5 a.m., March 14, and ended at about 3 p.m., March 14. I did not get an accurate measure of the snowfall.
3/18/2020 2:15 PM 1.19 0.0 M M M
3/20/2020 6:00 AM 1.52 M M M M There were several periods of heavy precipitation that probably lasted less than a half-hour. We appeared to have a brief period of light flurries that were frozen onto our deck near the gauge.
3/23/2020 9:15 AM 0.10 M M M M This is mostly from wet snow that melted upon contact with the ground. It began in the afternoon Sunday and by Monday morning any snow in the funnel of the gauge had melted into the measurement tube.
3/27/2020 9:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Not sure if surface tension was holding water in the tube to the first .01" mark, so this is slightly more than a trace. It's from a fast-moving band of light showers.
3/28/2020 6:00 AM 0.08 M M M M The start of this light rainfall is approximate. It also follows an earlier period of very light mist on Friday afternoon. Based on estimates from KCCI radar, two brief waves of heavier rainfall passed over at about 3:15 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. It ended at about 5 a.m. Based on radar, a period of several hours without rain appeared likely at the observation time. This is part of a larger storm system moving through the state.
3/29/2020 7:00 AM 0.07 M M M M March 28 rain began around 9 a.m. and ended around 11 a.m. Several bands of light rain that followed in the early afternoon in our area missed us. Rainfall to that point totaled .05 inch. Several bands passed over in the night (mostly very early morning) according to radar but only added .02 inch. It was windy (about 25 mph) and the rain bands moved quickly.
4/1/2020 9:00 AM 0.05 M M M M
4/3/2020 7:00 AM 0.10 M M M M This appears to be from one band of light thundershowers that passed over at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The amount in the rain gauge was between 9 and 10 hundredths of an inch but closer to 10, so I rounded up.
4/4/2020 7:00 AM 0.34 M M M M Most of ths rain fell in about an hour after the storm moved through at about 8:30 a.m. Friday. Then it froze. I'm not certain of the ending time.
4/6/2020 8:00 AM 0.04 M M M M I didn't think it rained overnight but noticed water in the gauge when I took our dog out.
4/12/2020 7:00 AM 0.04 0.0 M M M Light sprinkles stared around 9:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by heavier rain at about 11:45 a.m., ending at about noon. The slightly heavier rain was preceeded by brief thunder. According to radar we may have had very light rain at about 5 a.m. today, but judging by the wetness on our deck it may not have reached the ground. It was slightly foggy at the observation time, with visibility of at least a quarter mile and probably a half mile or better.
4/13/2020 7:00 AM 1.68 M M M M Heavy rain arrived shortly after 8:15. More moderate rain lasted through the morning and light rain continued during the afternoon until 5 p.m. It was mixed with light sleet just before it ended. Very light snow that couldn't be measured lasted until about 8 p.m.
4/15/2020 7:00 AM 0.04 0.5 0.04 0.5 0.04
4/17/2020 7:00 AM 0.24 3.0 0.24 3.0 0.24 Very light snow flurries of fine flakes began at about 3 p.m. Thursday but heavier snow that started accumulating on the grass started at about 8 p.m. Snowfall was measured about a half-hour after it ended, so the ground depth should be fairly accurate (measured twice on board of our deck away from the house and twice on top of fence posts). The snow seemed wet but was fluffy at the surface. Melted snow precip may be off by a one or two tenths, since I did not remove the funnel and central column. I tried to remove snow that was sticking outside of the circumference of the funnel, then packed it in and brought it inside the house to thaw. I don't have a snow measuring board or snow ruler yet. I'll start measuring this the right way (without the funnel and core) next snow season.
4/20/2020 7:30 AM 0.01 M M M M
4/21/2020 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M This is from the tail end of the previous day's rain event. It's barely 0.01, with the water level raised slightly by surface tension
4/22/2020 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M
4/24/2020 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M A trace fell the previous evening. We were on the edge of a heavier thunderstorm cell that passed to our north and east. I'm not certain when the rest of the rain fell, but it was probably early morning between about 3 and 5 a.m.
4/27/2020 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M
4/29/2020 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M Most of this fell shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday.
5/3/2020 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M We had very light sprinkles--from about 8:45 to 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, and again from 10:40-10:55 a.m., 6:20 to 6:50 p.m. and again from about 7 a.m to 7:15 a.m. today on May 3. Observed at about 8 a.m. due to sleeping in.
5/8/2020 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M
5/14/2020 6:00 AM 0.14 M M M M Sprinkles began around 3 p.m. May 13, with a brief shower around 4 p.m. Rain resumed around midnight, with light showers at about 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., ending at about 5 a.m.
5/15/2020 7:00 AM 0.89 0.0 M M M Most of the rain fell in the afternoon and early evening.
5/17/2020 7:00 AM 0.69 M M M M Sprinkles began around 8 p.m. Saturday. The heaviest rainfall was from about 1:30 to 3:00 a.m.
5/18/2020 6:45 AM 0.11 M M M M Times are not very accurate. There was a light mist at the time of measurement.
5/19/2020 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M This precipitation is from periodic mist in the preceding 24 hours. The estimated beginning and ending times aren't accurate.
5/20/2020 7:15 AM T M M M M Fog and mist began sometime in the early morning and was continuing when I took this measurement.
5/21/2020 7:30 AM 0.01 M M M M A bit more than a trace--from intermittent mist in the previous 22 hours.
5/23/2020 7:30 AM 0.31 M M M M Very light sprinkles continues at the time of observation but skies clearing of rain clouds and radar indicated the storm was about over.
5/24/2020 8:00 AM T M M M M This is really the tail end of the previous days's storms, from mist and light sprinkles--not quite 1/100th of an inch.
5/25/2020 6:30 AM 0.61 M M M M
5/26/2020 6:15 AM 1.21 M M M M
5/27/2020 6:10 AM 0.19 M M M M
5/28/2020 8:00 AM 0.50 M M M M This was posted late. There were a few sprinkles after 8 a.m. and I planned to file a multi-day report on Friday. Almost no precipitation fell after 8 a.m., Thursday, however. I forgot to post this Friday before leaving on a short trip. I posted upon returning home. (I emptied the rain gauge today. It lost about 0.01 inch of precipitation due to evaporation.

8/11/2020 6:00 AM 0.96 M M M M This is the rain from Monday's Derecho. We were out of town until the late afternoon of August 11 (so the observation time here is not accurate). We did not have power until today, August 14, so I was not able to log on until now. The timing of this rain event is very approximate, based on neighbors' recollections.
8/15/2020 7:00 AM 1.75 M M M M Our dog was frightened by the thunder of this fast-moving line of showers, so I was awake and the duration information is accurate. Nearly all of this fell in 30 minutes, with a few sprinkles lasting another 2-3 minutes afterwards.
9/2/2020 8:00 AM 0.10 M M M M We were out of town. I checked our rain gauge on Saturday, Sept. 5, so there may have been some evaporation. The estimated time of rainfall is based on KCCI radar. The amount is identical to NWS data for Des Moines on that date.

9/11/2020 8:00 AM 0.49 M M M M We had light rain or mist for most of the previous 24 hours. It was raining lightly when I took the reading.
9/12/2020 8:00 AM 0.64 M M M M Rain amount is accurate, but timing is very approximate. We left home Friday morning when it was raining lightly. We returned home Sunday afternoon, Sept. 13. I believe most of this fell between Friday and Saturday morning sometime.

9/29/2020 8:00 AM 0.06 M M M M I didn't notice this small amount of rainfall until I returned from a 100-mile bike ride at around 6 pm. I'm sure this rain would have been measurable earlier, which is why I put the 8 am observation time.
