I might be wrong, but my best judgement is that my core samples are more representative than the gauge catch. Gauge catch 0.01 inch. Snowboard in an open farm field averaged 0.3 inch of very icy snow. Took two core samples off the snow board, near northwest corner 0.09 inch liquid, near southeast corner 0.12 inch liquid. Average core 0.10 inch. Farm field averaged 0.3 inches on the ground, maximum 0.9 inches. At 6:10 pm I measured 1.1 inch average snow depth in grass, maximum 1.8 inches. I believe that to be most representative of new snow without the melting that occurred in the farm field. But for the overall area, the grassy area is negligible in size compared to farm fields, so I am using that as total snow on ground, rounded up to 0.5. |

Was very windy, impossible to get highly accurate measurements, but at 10:50 AM yesterday I measured 1.0 inches of new snow average on the ground, variable 0-2.0 inches (having started the day with just a trace on the ground). We did have some light flurries after that, but I do not think there was measurable accumulation. Currently, after blowing all night, in the open field the snow depth is 0-1.2, but the coverage of 0 is very small. I estimate the average at 0.8 inch, rounded off to 1.0. Took a drive to check out the flooding between 7:20 and 7:40 am. Horse Creek 1/4 mile south is barely within banks, 95-100% full, but is over the banks at 10000W Rd and also over the banks at Highway 115 at Herscher. Pretty confident there was some new snow, but it was all melted by the time I got home at 3:00 pm. I cleared probably 0.2 inch of slush off my windshield in Kankakee (9 miles from home) at noon. Very difficult to judge total snow, was about 90% coverage in the field near the house but I can see it's less than 50% coverage a long way out in the field. Windy conditions and drifting snow yesterday make it impossible to positively measure new snow but since there is only a trace of liquid in the gauge and the total snow is actually less than 7 am yesterday, trace seems like the best possible estimate. Gauge catch was only 0.01 but I believe the snow core from my snow board to be more representative, or reality could be somewhere in between. I actually pulled the gauge at 11:15 am and it had snow plastered on the north side exterior, so I think a lot of the snow probably blew past the gauge without being caught. Some water on roads, but not all the way across. State Highway 115, 1/4 mile northeast my location has water about 3 feet into the north lane. Roads have farm field debris on roads in multiple spots. Neighbor says he had 3.9 inches, 1 mile west of here, unofficially. |

At 4:15 pm I could see that we had slightly over 1 inch in the gauge but it looked like more was coming soon. I didn't time it, but was pretty sure that all of that fell in less than 1 hour. Before the heaviest part of the rain there was a tiny bit of disc shaped hail 3/8 inch diameter and 3/16 inch thick. No damage from hail, but may be some crop damage from standing water. At 4:52 pm I swapped out the gauge and measured 1.18 inches of rain. Have another 0.11 inches in gauge this morning. |

Heavy dew. Complex fog (FG/BR) situation that would be my worst nightmare to define in my FAA weather observing days. Visibility varies 3/8-3SM in layers, fog mostly on the ground but to the west it's slightly aloft, can see the bottom and top of a grain bin at 1 1/4SM but cannot see the middle. |
