Broke record high and also record high low temp yesterday. High here was 93, don’t know old record. Don’t recall the low temp, only that it was the record highest low for this date. |

Finally got the cooler weather I’ve been hoping for. Much cooler too much cooler. What does Illinois have against mid-70’s anyway? Went from low 90’s to 70 high yesterday morning that fell all day, to waking up this morning to 45 degrees. |

Hope we do get the inch and a half predicted. Farmers won’t be happy, they need to get the rest of the corn out before the freeze later next week but it’s very dry around here. |

This seems low compared to unofficial, non-CoCoRahs totals from nearby areas, such as my sister’s 3 1/2”. But those amounts were not collected in a standard gauge or standardized manner either. And there’s always the “biggest fish” effect too, to skew rain totals a little high |

For an idea how dry we are here, we had 2.15” rain Saturday late and my farmer was in the field cutting corn here Monday. Ground soaked those 2+ inches up like a sponge. Didn’t even get the ditches wet. |

It was flurrying pretty good when I left the house yesterday morning but I was in Springfield all day so have no estimate on how much snow may have fallen and melted over the rest of the day. Tenth of an inch had accumulated and remained in grassy areas and field stubble. There was negligible precipitation in the gauge this morning. |

Light rain mixed with ice pellets started mid-morning. By about noon a half inch of snow had fallen on top of the sleety rain and roads grew quickly treacherous. Temperature at 7a.m. was 38 degrees, by noon about 28, looked and felt like a January blizzard outside, and by evening it was downright chilly. Woke up this morning to icy roads
and walks, 2 degree temperature (my gauge) with -7 wind chill. My west coast cousins here for the weekend went home with whiplash from the crazy weather swings Friday through Monday. Did not take a core sample for a melted core value. |

Sleety snow frozen to surfaces made it nearly impossible to collect representative core for melt value. Had one been obtained the water content would have been about half the gauge value, as a semi-educated guess. |

Snow started about noon. Very sharp edge to snow band, no snow here but less than 2 miles south roads were completely snow covered. Heavy snow between 3:00 and 4:30pm. Snow flurries continuing into late evening hours. Light wind, minimal drifting but roads were still treacherous. |

Moderate wind may have blown snow past gauge cylinder rather than snow falling into cylinder because this seems like a large variance between gauge melt, total snow core melt, and new
snowfall. Snow had drifted since previous day’s measurements but I can get a good average snow depth usually. |

Snow is starting to melt completely from sunny, grassy spots where wind had blown some snow cover away. But I still have 80% coverage and drifted areas (particularly my driveway) up to 6" deep. Snow pack is getting wetter. Snow to melt ratio has been a little over 1:2, today it is close to 1:3. |

Some melting yesterday but still have better than 50% snow cover. Water content in remaining snow pack up to nearly 1:4 ratio. I've been using the 4WD truck all week to get thru the drifts in my country lane but by yesterday I thought it had melted enough to get the car out if I scooped off the high spots. Bad call. Snow was deeper than it looked once I got started shoveling, drifted 6"-12" deep down the entire 80' driveway. This morning it is still a slushy sloppy mess. |

Still had plenty of snow cover for a beautiful White Christmas sunrise this morning. A little less than 50% coverage, but some of the drifts are hanging tough at 2”-3” depth. It’s closer to a half inch than to zero, so I’m going with the half inch. Melted core value taken from a spot a little less than a 1/2” deep. If it gets near 60 today I’m pretty sure by tomorrow the snow will be finished off for this round. |

Yep, there are still a couple patches of snow behind the barn and along the driveway, drift remnants. But I had more snow to start with than most, nearly 8” with drifts almost a foot. And when the wind changed direction I ended up with knee-deep drifts. |

More extremely sparse snow flurries as I was checking gauge yesterday morning. Light mist at time of reading today and may have been a few light early morning flurries as well. Snow cover is mostly unbroken but very thin. Not quite enough depth to round up to a half inch for total coverage, closer to two tenths. |

Snow! I didn’t measure the accumulation which looked to be about quarter inch. It was nearly gone within a couple hours, not sure if it was melting away or just settled into the grass. At any rate I settled for listing a trace of new snow and 0 accumulation at time of reading because it had long melted by then. |

This reading astonished me. Running back and forth between here and my daughters house 10 miles east I was caught in a couple drenching downpours, and rained out of yard work there. Two lines of storm cells ran south to north drenching everything more than a mile or two east and west of here, and this is all I got. Which is good, my sump pump badly needs a break v |

Again torrential rainfall was clearly visible about 3 miles from home while only a few brief sprinkles fell here. The storm cell that passed moving west northwest produced a picturesque and widely recorded land spout (my personal conclusion not yet confirmed by NWS) that was understandably reported to emergency services as a tornado by several witnesses. |

Once again watched a sizable storm go by less than a mile or two to the east around 5:30AM while here it barely sprinkled, if that. What is in the gauge fell yesterday early, after 7AM. |

Wow, had a bit of a shower early evening so I put on a rain jacket to finish chores. About 6:30 I realized I was glad I had a jacket on! Rather cool with the strong breeze. Low was in the mid-50’s overnight. |

Rained hard to my southeast a few miles last night around 9 or 10. My sidewalk didn’t even get entirely wet. I suspect this catch fell near or before dawn this morning. But radar shows me pinched at the nexus between two pinwheel arms of large precipitation shields so I expect even I’m going to get some good rainfall amounts this morning for Wednesday’s report. |

Seems like a long time since we had a gentle steady all day rain like yesterday’s. It’s still raining this morning in the same manner. The ground seems to be fairly well re-saturated, the field and roadside ditches are starting to carry water again and some ponding has even started. |

Absolutely perfect gorgeous weather!! Can’t believe it’s early August and high temps are only in the low to mid 70’s, with sunny cloud dappled skies, low humidity and delightfully fresh breeze. I just sit on my shady front porch and watch the hummingbirds fuss over the feeders and can almost think all is right with the world. |

It was really quite amazing to watch on radar as storm systems pinwheeled around my location without quite reaching me.. and later a solid unbroken line of storms broke apart To pass around here again. Only one storm held together long enough to rain hard for about five minutes. |

Another two rounds of sitting in a hole in the radar images while everything for 50-100 miles around gets slammed. High winds blew in my daughters front door just a few miles East, my sister had hail about 10 miles south. I had a brief episode of brisk winds and a little rain later on. The end. |

Starting to get pretty dry around here. It’s probably too late to help the corn, stalks are firing and corn is nearing or at the start of dent. But soybeans could still benefit from moisture to help fill out the pods and boost yields. |

I am SO ready for this heat and humidity to be over! I thought it was spilled to be cooler yesterday but it wasn’t at all. I did get 5 quarts and 4 pints of sliced peaches canned, 6 quarts frozen, and still have 1/4 bushel of beautiful fat peaches left from my tree. |
