Note: I did notice the apparent discrepancy with yesterdays report concerning the total melted amount collected. I assure you the measurement is accurate. The spot in the snow field it came from had a distinct depression I did not see from the surface. That is the most likely explanation for the additional water. 12:21 pm: We began to experience a very light flurry of snowflakes. I didn't mention it because I thought it would last about ten minutes or so, but I was seriously wrong;) Our flurry has slowly gotten stronger with increasingly larger diameter flakes. However, it has all melted right off.
We are still receiving it; though, the flakes have decreased in size to about an eighth of an inch in diameter. It is 1:50 pm. Happy New year everyone!
The earlier flurry came to a stop about 3:27 pm.

Note: As promised, I did choose a different snow field this morning from the northern side of the house. I discovered 1.5 inches of ice pack at the base of my core which I chiseled out with a screwdriver. The numbers below have not provided the illumination I sought and expected. And I am still at a loss to explain the rising melt numbers from the previous site on the southern side.
I lightly played with a hypothesis that perhaps the high levels of humidity have deposited extra water in the snow, but it's hard to swallow given there is no such condensation on my snow board, or anywhere on my weather station to corroborate the amount of condensation that would be required.
Stranger still, one would think being on the north side of the house with far more shade and significantly less access to sunlight, there would be less overall melt; thereby, providing higher melted values and depth measurements.
Lastly, I took a second depth measurement from the first snowfield: 12.0. So we've lost an additional inch in the last 24 hours. I'll collect another core from that site tomorrow and see what I come up with there. There has to be a reasonable explanation.....right?

This certainly would explain the higher water content in that it comprised of mostly grains collective grains of ice due to melting and freezing throughout the season.
What it doesn't yet solve is the continued rise in water content where, in my estimation, it should be lowering. And, it finally has by 0.03." |

Notes: This morning, I found the several snowfields I use to be depleted to the extent I needed to find a more accurate reflection of the total snow still remaining. The problem with this is that our acreage isn't exactly flat. Coupled with it moving up and down, it's hard to tell where the highest accumulation might be. I ended up locating a suitable site by finding the least amount of goat fence above the snow line; hence, the lateness of this report.
Given this location, at 13.5" and the upcoming new snow expected Sunday through Monday, the numbers should now reflect the best totals available in the coming reports.

I mention this because I'm curious if anyone else in Maine has reported similar high temperatures over the last two months. The highest I have seen was 110 degrees Fahrenheit. That was at least a month prior to this report.

We have two layers of Cumulus: The upper layer covers the south by southeast and western sky and travels north while the lower consists of sporadic clumps of Cumulus and travels south by southeast. The western horizon is also hazy.
9:42 am: Quick addendum: I just stepped out on my back deck to discover that the lower layer of Cumulus is growing larger and wider and has changed its course. It is traveling south now.

Note: Yesterday's report was not entirely accurate. The thin Cirrus layer I reported was actually smoke drifting past from the west coast and blocking the sunlight. It didn't occur to me until I saw the light red-orange hue in the clouds and around our star. This reminded me of the smoke from fires when we lived in Washington state. And that was when I realized my mistake. This also explains my difficulty with reporting its direction of travel.
