12/28/2019 8:30 AM 1.32 0.0 M 0.0 M Part 1 of a significant winter precipitation event: Yet another impressive December rain event (similar to a few last year)! Steady light to moderate rain fell nearly non-stop from around 730PM on the 27th through ob-time, with very light rain continuing at ob-time. A light coating of ice formed on elevated surfaces overnight (such as tree branches), but thanks to temperatures rising from 32 to 36 overnight there were no major ice issues.
12/29/2019 8:30 AM 0.70 3.0 M 3.0 M Part 2 of a significant winter precipitation event (2-day total now 2.02"): For this 24-hour period, the majority of 0.70" precip fell in the form of 3" of very wet snow (and a little sleet), which was preceded by roughly 0.15" of liquid rain prior to phase change. MORE DETAIL: Most of the daytime of the 28th was fairly dry, with only fog and periodic light rain/drizzle. Steady light rain began around 6PM, briefly changing to sleet around 9PM and followed by an intense burst of moderate-heavy snow mainly 930-1030PM (likely at least 2.5") that was accompanied by a distinct rumble of thunder. After 1030PM (and through the rest of the night), snow diminished to much lighter intensity as winds increased. At ob-time, only flurries but gusting around 30 MPH. The 3" snow here is a "best guess", as not only did winds overnight cause some drifting, but the very dense nature of the snow likely caused compaction between when most of it fell and when it was measured (roughly 10 hours). At ob-time the unsheltered snow board only had 2" on it (appeared unrepresentatively low), so the 3" was taken from the more-sheltered driveway. SIDE NOTE: The Hastings area resided within a tight gradient in snow totals, as towns slightly east (such as Clay Center) barely had a dusting while towns only 25-35 west-northwest (such as Minden/Kearney) had 7-11".
12/30/2019 7:00 AM 0.10 1.0 M 4.0 M Part 3 (and final chapter) of a significant winter rain/snow event (3-day storm total 2.12"/snow 4"): Thanks to relentless northwest winds gusting 30-45 MPH the entire period promoting blowing/drifting snow, measurements for this past 24 hours are truly a best-estimate. Light snow/flurries fell nearly all day and evening of the 29th before ending (a brief period of moderate snow between 3-4PM), with the 1" of new snow measured from the most-sheltered area on the south side of the house. The total snow depth of 4" is solely based on storm total snowfall itself, as actual depth on this property ranges wildly from less than 1" (with grass blades visible) up to 3 ft. drifts.

3/10/2020 7:00 AM 0.29 0.0 M 0.0 M This is Part 2 of a precipitation event that was ongoing on at ob-time on the 9th (storm total was 0.41"): During this period, 0.29" of (primarily) chilly rain continued through around 1130 AM before ending. Based on nearby obs, there could have been a few snowflakes or ice pellets mixed in, but did not personally observe any wintry precip so will report zero snowfall.
3/11/2020 7:00 AM T 0.0 M 0.0 M At least one brief period of light rain/sprinkles was observed around 1115 AM on the 10th, and some might have also fallen earlier in the morning based on radar data.
3/12/2020 7:00 AM 0.03 0.0 M 0.0 M Mainly between 3-5 AM, a series of rain showers moved through. Lightning data confirmed strikes within 15 miles south of here, but did not personally see any or hear thunder. NOTE ABOUT PRECIPITATION TOTAL LIKELY BEING TOO LOW: Unfortunately, did not check rain gauge until nearly 7 PM and only had 0.03" in it. Based on reliable nearly obs, strongly suspect that actual rainfall was closer to 0.12", with the majority of this evaporating during the day before gauge was checked. Unfortunately, will never know with certainty how much actually fell here, so can only report what remained in the gauge.

3/14/2020 7:00 AM 0.53 3.5 M 3.5 M This constitutes the vast majority of a snow event that appears to be rapidly tapering off as of ob-time (total precipitation 0.53" and total snow 3.5"). This was a wet/dense snow (thanks to temperatures averaging around 32 degrees through most of it). While ended up going with 3.5" of snowfall, actual depth on various reliable surfaces ranged from 3-4". The 0.53" liquid was from the "raw" gauge catch, which seemed surprisingly-accurate despite steady east breezes of 10-15 MPH with higher gusts. Timing-wise, snow (mainly of light intensity) fell nearly non-stop starting at 340 PM on the 13th, although most of it during the first 1-2 hours melted-on-contact with the ground. SIDE NOTE: this was actually the biggest "snow event" in nearly 11 weeks.
3/15/2020 7:00 AM 0.01 T M 2.5 M The vast majority of precipitation during the past 24 hours consisted of light drizzle/freezing drizzle, noted both on the afternoon of the 14th and especially this morning (including at ob-time), with a thin glaze of ice on the side of the gauge. The trace of snowfall accounts for the last few flakes of the multi-inch event winding down at ob-time yesterday, with snow ending around 8 AM. Despite overcast skies and a high temp of only 33, lowered snow depth by 1" to account for settling/modest melting.
3/16/2020 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M 2.0 M This 0.01" consists of continued, off-and-on drizzle/freezing drizzle through the period, although the steadiest of it likely fell the morning of the 15th. Like yesterday, a thin glaze of ice again developed on the side of the rain gauge. Snow depth was reduced another half-inch (down to 2"), as settling/very limited melting continues.
3/17/2020 7:00 AM T 0.0 M 0.0 M This trace of precipitation consists of very light drizzle that persisted through around 1 PM on the 16th. Despite a high temp of only 44 degrees, the vast majority of lingering snow cover melted, with a couple of meager lingering patches not enough to even justify carrying a trace.
3/18/2020 7:00 AM 0.03 0.0 M 0.0 M This 0.03" consisted of off-and-on drizzle and passing light rain showers, most of which occurred during the late afternoon and evening of the 17th.
3/19/2020 8:30 AM 0.80 0.0 M 0.0 M First thunderstorms of the year in Hastings! The vast majority of this 0.80" occurred during passing showers and non-severe thunderstorms, mainly 5-730AM. However, earlier in the period, there were continued periods of light rain/drizzle, with 0.02" of accumulation noted around 8PM on the 18th. SIDE NOTE: Although a few distant rumbles of thunder/flashes of lightning could have been sensed from here within the last 10 days or so, these were truly the first thunderstorms of 2020 to track directly over Hastings.
3/20/2020 7:00 AM 0.06 0.1 M T M The majority of this 0.06" consisted of brief rain showers/weak thunderstorms during the afternoon/early evening of the 19th. However, a few bands of light snow/flurries passed through mainly 10PM-Midnight, barely leaving a thin coating of white that will call a "weak" one-tenth of an inch. SIDE NOTE: This period finally saw the end of a very active stretch of weather. Of note: 9 of the past 12 days featured measurable precipitation (totaling 1.88"), and 11 of the past 12 days featured at least a trace of precipitation.
3/21/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Non-precipitation side-note: although the 20th was quite cold for late-March (high temp only 30 degrees), it featured the FIRST SUNSHINE IN A WEEK here in Hastings, ending an extremely gloomy stretch.

4/3/2020 7:00 AM 0.01 T M T M This "strong-hundredth" consisted almost entirely of light freezing drizzle that fell nearly non-stop during the daylight hours of the 2nd. Then overnight there were a few periods of snow flurries, but with no snow accumulation. The trace of depth is for the thin glaze of ice that covers the ground this morning. MORE DETAILS: This was an interesting late-season icing event. Although ground/road temperatures remained just warm enough to hold off extensive slickness in the Hastings area, ice accretion was quite efficient on elevated surfaces such as tree branches/power lines, with moderately-strong north winds gusting 30-40 MPH adding stress to ice-covered lines and promoting sporadic power outages. The north-facing side of the rain gauge was coated in ice up to around 1/3" thick. Just out of curiosity (obviously not official) decided to melt the ice off the OUTSIDE of the rain gauge to see how much liquid content it held, and it totaled roughly 1 inch!
4/4/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Although the high temp on the 3rd only reached 37 degrees, this was sufficient to melt ice off surfaces, including the thin layer that coated all grass 24 hours ago.

4/13/2020 7:00 AM 0.01 0.2 M T M The 12th was very cold/unpleasant by mid-April standards. First, drizzle turned to freezing drizzle during the morning, slickening mainly elevated surfaces with a glaze of ice (up to one-quarter inch thick on the north-facing side of rain gauge). Then a narrow band of light-to-moderate snow pushed through mainly noon-2PM, briefly reducing visibility to around one-quarter mile as winds gusted to around 50 MPH (despite only 0.2" of actual accumulation). At ob-time today, the ground remains coated in a thin glaze of ice/patchy dusting of snow. Temperature-wise, the afternoon high on the 12th was only 33 degrees. On a final side note: this location experienced several/intermittent power outages on the 12th due to the combo of ice-coated power lines and strong winds, at least one of which lasted over an hour.

The 2.5" of snow is an average of several measurements between 2-3". 6/22/2020 6:15 AM 0.02 0.0 M 0.0 M This was the 3rd straight period with measurable rain, but merely 0.28" total to show for it. This latest 0.02" fell during passing showers/weak thunderstorms mainly 945-1030AM on the 21st. Additional (non-measurable) sprinkles were noted mainly 750-830PM.
6/23/2020 7:00 AM T 0.0 M 0.0 M Periods of sprinkles/very light (non-measurable rain) occurred between 715-815AM and also around 8PM on the 22nd. During the evening sprinkles, a heavier shower (with up to around 0.25" amounts) passed only about 10 miles to the southwest. It continues getting increasingly-dry here, with only 0.61" over the past FOUR weeks.

6/27/2020 7:00 AM 0.02 0.0 M 0.0 M Another in a series of pathetic rain "events", as only 0.02" fell mainly 430-5AM. This brings the grand total over the past 32 days up to only 0.63" (roughly 15% of normal). Adding to the "rain frustration" was the sight of frequent lightning to the south overnight, as many places within 25-45 miles to the southwest-through-southeast received at least 0.50-1.00".
6/28/2020 7:00 AM 0.19 0.0 M 0.0 M Although amounts fell FAR short of what is needed to get back on track, this 0.19" at least was more "interesting" than recent minor rains. Rain and sporadic hail began falling at 1250AM, as a northward-lifting line of strong to severe thunderstorms passed through. The hail only lasted about 5 minutes, and although did find one 1" stone, most was penny size or smaller with no damage noted. The majority of rain (0.15") fell within the first 25 minutes, but an additional 0.04" fell in lighter showers over the next few hours, with rain all but done by 3AM. On a positive note, the rapid development of thunderstorms south of here around midnight provided this observer with his best "frequent lightning show" of 2020 so far. On a frustrating note, this particular part of Hastings measured less rain than much of the city did, as the airport (3 miles NW of here) reported 0.45" and the NWS office (6 miles N of here) had 0.75". This brings the grand total over the past 33 days up to only 0.82" (roughly 20% of normal).

7/1/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Well, July began just like June ended...with more "rain envy": After watching considerable lightning/storms to mainly the not-so-distant SOUTH of here in recent days, the evening of the 30th into this early-AM featured considerable lightning/storms to the NORTH-northeast. Most locations only 25 miles north-northeast of here received 0.50-0.75", while here, the lawn continues to slowly brown as appreciable rain keeps missing in all directions.

7/9/2020 7:00 AM 0.34 0.0 M 0.0 M Two main stories here: 1) This 0.34" wasn't nearly enough to ease gradually-worsening drought in the immediate Hastings area, but was still the "biggest" rain at this site in 6.5 WEEKS (this brings the grand total for the past 6+ weeks to only 1.16"...roughly 20 percent of normal)!...2) This rain was associated with a large complex of severe thunderstorms that raced in from the west and northwest mainly 1130PM-1230AM. I observed several estimated gusts of 45-60 MPH during this time, but fortunately no damage on this property (nearby HSI airport peaked 67 MPH). Of the 0.34" total rain, only around 0.15" fell during the initial blast of storms (although some might have blown over the top of the gauge), with the rest of it occurring with steady light showers that ended by 2 AM.

Mainly between 2-3AM, a pronounced-but-localized "wake low" event occurred along the back edge of the light rain shield, with roughly 1 hour of sustained southerly winds 30+ MPH/occasional gusts 50+ MPH (nearby HSI airport peaked 56 MPH). 7/20/2020 8:00 AM 0.64 0.0 M 0.0 M Biggest rain in 8 weeks! Although not nearly enough to "catch up" from recent deficits, this 0.64" was VERY needed. The majority of it occurred with a line of non-severe thunderstorms between 245-330AM, and the rest from lingering light rain through around 5AM. Even with this nice little rain, this station is still only around 27% of normal for the past 8 weeks.
7/21/2020 7:00 AM 0.05 0.0 M 0.0 M This meager 0.05" fell as light rain mainly between 130-330AM. Unlike the previous night where this site was fortunate enough to get a somewhat-meaningful amount (0.64"), there was zero luck this time as heavier thunderstorms seemed to go out of their way to "skip over" south Hastings. For example, a fellow CoCoRaHS station only ~ 6 miles east of here reported 0.52" while one less than 15 miles southeast measured 1.51".

The majority of rain (0.93") fell fast during strong thunderstorms mainly 845-915 PM on the 29th. Then later in the afternoon-evening, various thunderstorms (some severe) were visible in nearly all directions, but only sprinkles fell here along the extreme periphery of this activity. The majority of this 0.03" fell as light drizzle, although radar suggests a very brief shower likely passed through around 520 AM.
