10/1/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yesterday evening went from 15% RH to 63% after sunset - a big change. This morning it is humid and cloudy. Happy October!
10/2/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cloudy much of the day, but 40% chance of rain was not accurate. It has been very dry, particularly with the warm temperatures and days of a lot of wind. The trees are just starting to turn color at their tops, except for the New Mexico currants, which are bright red.
10/3/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
10/4/2019 8:00 AM 0.31 M M M M 100% chance of rain was correct. The rain began after midnight and was very heavy at times. It is still raining and visibility is about 3 miles in cloud cover and rain. What a delightful surprise after so many dry, windy weeks.
10/5/2019 7:00 AM 0.44 M M M M Very cloudy and RH in the 90s until mid afternoon with rain off and on. It was a much needed beneficial rain. The air is clear, free of smoke and beautiful.

10/7/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Down to 40ºF last night. We are about to put plastic over our hoop house - fall is here!

10/9/2019 7:00 AM T M M M M Very light rain around 4 pm from the west, accompanied by winds gusting up to 35 mph.
10/10/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A busy day ahead of the looming serious cold front arriving this afternoon with many winterizing tasks including covering our still thriving hoop house. Good bye summer, good bye garden!
10/11/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The day went from 65°F to 26°F and from 50% RH down to 9% RH. I don’t recall it’s ever being so dry when it was so cold. Usually it’s much more humid when cold here.

5/29/2020 7:00 AM 0.18 M M M M Zero percent chance of precipitation yielded a substantial rain at about 7 pm. The skies clouded up and suddenly with no warning we had a clap of thunder right above us in the field. Heavy, cold rain began immediately to our delight. Now we are up to two and a half inches of precipitation for the calendar year.

6/7/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Absolutely horrendous day with steady wind at 20 mph or more for many, many hours. Peak gust was 46 mph. Blown branches and leaves are everywhere. Everything was in motion and full of noise. We started the day with 90% RH and ended with 7% RH. The ground is completely dried out by the wind.
6/8/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
6/9/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M RH low was 6%. The third day in a row of very high wind (peak gust 40 mph, steady at 23 mph all afternoon and early evening). Blowing dust brought visibility down to about 6 miles in haze. Then it got very cold very quickly, dropping 20°F in about an hour.
6/10/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Finally a day when we could be outside without horrible wind. It is unusually cool for this time of year.

6/15/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Once again, lots of clouds and no rain at all. Very, very dry. Anything smaller than a tree that is not irrigated is dying.
6/16/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Once again an afternoon of high wind drying out vegetation even more. The amount of wind is unusual and recalls 2011, a very bad fire year.

7/13/2020 5:46 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It was 81°F at midnight, making it difficult to sleep. We had dry Tstorms on top of the 97°F heat. Fall can’t come soon enough...
7/14/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 30% chance of precipitation instead brought a violent dust storm that lasted at least an hour with gusts of 45 mph and extremely low visibility. The entire Caja del Rio Plateau was a mass of blowing dust, just like photos of the Dust Bowl.
7/15/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Once again a lot of high wind and no rain. Will it be a 4 inch year?
7/16/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Lots of predictions of precipitation from NOAA with what turn out to be meaningless statistics: it does not rain. We have daily high winds instead. Still just over 3 inches since December 31.
7/17/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Since it no longer rains here, I am grateful for the clouds that make outdoor work much more bearable. Maybe instead of chance of precipitation, chance of clouds would be a more accurate measurement?
7/18/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Whatever the cheerleading about the monsoon from the weather people, we have had absolutely no rain, just heat and wind and drought. 66 days until the fall equinox.
7/19/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We had the longest dry Tstorm in 20+ years at this location. It lasted about 90 minutes, meaning we had to do our evening chores and watering with headlamps after dark. No rain for the weary. Just over three inches in 201 days. Fire dispatch was unusually busy with smoke check calls last night after the dry debacle.
7/20/2020 7:00 AM 0.94 M M M M At 7:49 pm we were hit by a violent storm from the NW that dropped .94 of rain in 22 minutes with serious flooding that happened very quickly. We had 60-80 lightning strikes, many cloud to ground, with high winds. Our ground was so hard and dry from so little rain this year that the water quickly caused flooding of arroyos and roads. Even our backyard and our driveway were under water for a time. We received no warnings from the wx service at all. Is it possible this storm was not visible on radar? The prediction was 40% chance of precipitation. This was the most violent storm we have ever seen in 20 years here.

7/24/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Just over 4 inches in 206 days, with 3 successive days of 70% chance of rain predicted and no rain has fallen at all. We are a forgotten corner of drought.
7/25/2020 7:00 AM 0.22 M M M M We finally got some rain! I’m not even sure what the chance of precipitation was as I gave up looking at the forecast as of Thursday since it gave no guidance. This will give us our second night off since April! What a blessing!

7/29/2020 7:00 AM 0.22 M M M M 50% chance of precipitation. Tstorm in the early afternoon from the west. This makes two inches for the month, out of five total for the year. Still dry, but blessedly wetter than it was earlier in the year.

That has been the pattern of NWS forecasts this summer: rain when they say it won’t and no rain when they say it will, with some exceptions. I no longer pay attention to forecasts. 8/14/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M For the last three days at sunset we have had a large sandstorm each sunset, with winds up to 35-40 mph and very low visibility. The wind is so strong it stuck some green cottonwood leaves to our second story skylights. This is a new and very unpleasant phenomenon.
8/15/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Very hot and very dry with daily serious dust storms about 4 - 5 miles wide on the Caja del Rio plateau which move east over us, blanketing us in dust and winds gusting up to 35 mph. We haven’t had daily dust storms before this.
8/16/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yet another sandstorm at about 4 pm. They are becoming a daily event. Is this how desertification starts?
8/17/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Our first day without a sandstorm. Still very dry, with no wetting rain at all since July 29. Hot for this time of year, too.
8/18/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No sandstorm yesterday! It’s very smoky this morning because of a fire near Chupadero combined with the smoke from Colorado. Yesterday visibility was about 5 miles in smoke. Still hot and dry, no rain in 20 days.
8/19/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Visibility was down to one mile in smoke in the afternoon from the Medio Fire. Hot, apocalyptic looking day with smoke, strange light and occasionally dark clouds, but of course, no rain, just fire.
8/20/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Thick smoke again in the afternoon when it hit 94°F with 16% RH, feeling more like June than late August. No rain since July 29.
8/21/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hot (94°F), very dry (10% RH), very smoky (3 miles visibility). No rain at all for 23 days and just over 5 inches of precipitation in 234 days.

8/24/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I am late with my report due to another wildfire that began last night and is only 8 miles away from me. The fire began with a tiny dry lightning cell that came through about 5:20 pm MDT. It's now over 50 acres with a serious black plume. The ground is so dry that the fire took off immediately.
8/25/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Doing a lot of watering as last rain was almost 4 weeks ago, while watching wildfire on both sides and breathing smoke. Nearest fire is 8 miles away. Daily dry lightning around 5 pm now, too. Climate change is real.
8/26/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain. Lots of smoke. Hot. Learning to dread dark clouds that might bring dry lightning and another fire. Waking up at 4 every day to close the windows against choking smoke. Saudades for fall.
8/27/2020 7:00 AM T M M M M After four weeks with not even a drop of rain, I can finally report a trace of rain. It was really trace, but it cooled the air and blew away some of the smoke.

9/6/2020 7:00 AM 0.16 M M M M After 40 hot, dry, windy days without wetting precipitation, it rained. It began around 5:30 from the west, with a 20% chance of precipitation and no lightning. The rain fell very intensely for a short time and the temperature dropped 22°F. It was very hot before the storm. Extremely grateful and blessed.
9/7/2020 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Very hot (96°F), 5% RH during the afternoon, with wind. The outdoors felt like being in a tumble dryer.
