Prior to that break, there was a nearly hour period of sleet and freezing rain. Synoptic snows returned after 9pm Monday night, and shut down mid to late morning on the 12th.

Eventually it converted for freezing rain and then to rain to drizzle. First part of storm over. Act II with new activity started as snow shortly after 19:00 LST Sunday night. At obs time, snow had gone to very light. An additional 5" of pure snow fell. Total represents the accumulation of both snow and ice pellets (sleet). Temps remained in upper 20s during the night. Temp range of 33/28. At obs time, light snow and 30.

Overnight, skies rapidly cleared after midnight, and temps then plummeted. Ideal radiational cooling took place. At obs time,sunny and 16. Snowfall totals yesterday are accurate...less than half inch of new snow.

By dawn, next "system," is closing in, and a round of steady light snow broke out after 07:30 Friday. A half inch of newer snow has fallen till the cutoff 08:30am obs, plus the 1.5" of snow that fell Thursday from 08:30 on, in the 24 hour period ending today.

12/19/2019 6:30 AM 0.10 2.5 M 6.0 M Strong cold air advection with NW flow produced several bursts of snowsqualls and snow flurries during the period. The initial burst started at 12:10pm Wednesday. It lasted about 2 hours, dumping 1.8 inches of snow. Skies brightened. Then, after 15:30, a second squall came in with lesser amounts. More occurred at dusk and at night, too numerous to count. All the while, temperatures continued to drop..from the upper 20s late morning, to 14 by 18:00, with a minimum of 10 at early obs time today. At that time, mostly clear, but lake clouds visible to the N and NE. Snow aloft also observed in that direction. Wind near calm at dawn. Event total over last 2 days now just past 6" of new snow. See yesterday and previous day for other totals.
12/20/2019 6:30 AM T 0.3 M 4.5 M Temp range 19/14. Tea kettle snow in progress at early obs time. Started shortly after 22:30 Thursday night. Thursday daytime featured intervals of low-mid clouds snow free, but frigid, with daytime max of 19. Temps held in upper teens overnight,but a min of 14 observed at obs time.

Leaving us azure blue skies, and jet contrails visible for the afternoon. Sub-freezing for third day in a row, highs mid 20s. Ovenight, clear skies followed by increasing high clouds. Overnight low of 10, but low lying areas had lows in single numbers.

Late in day, a wind shift to the NE and upslope...along with plenty of moist air...resulted in dense fog after 23:00. It lifted before 07:00, but visibilities restricted to 3-5 miles. At obs, overcast. Ground bare except in northward exposure properties in shadows of homes. But overall, trace on the ground.

Temp at minimum, 35, with snow starting to create an icy layer on driveway and sidewalks.

Strong cold air advection midday into the evening dropped values from near 30 at 11:30 to 22 by 18:00. Overnight, lake clouds remained, along with occasional periods of light snowshowers. Skies cleared after 06:30 & radiational cooling set in. By 08:05, temps went from 18 to 12 in 90 minutes. Rain gauge was not out, due to observer error. Amended snowfall total after second evaluation late morning.

Developing cyclone to our west, helped to push a warm front north of the US-Canadian border. Eventually, the mix of clouds and sun went away with rain showers arriving early to mid afternoon. Temps dropped from record breaking mid 60s, to lower 50s by sundown. Shortly after 19:15, the polar cold front limped through, gradually pressing from north to south. An extreme temperature contrast was noted by 19:30 to 23:00. Along the Lake Ontario shoreline, temps were near 38, while in the northern Finger Lakes, temps held in the lower 60s. After midnight, this strong boundary pressed south of area. At 06:00, gale force winds arrived with rapid pressure rises. Gusts to 45 knots noted, but no rain observed. Skies were mostly cloudy with blue breaks observed, and winds starting to die down as of press time. At obs time, temp at 38 with wind still gusting to gale force. High wind warning remains in effect till noon. Overall, little rainfall fell during this period, any snowpiles now gone. But an extraordinary day with record warmth for a memorable Saturday 1/11.

Flake size small but packed, lowering visibilities to under 3/4 mile most of the time. Local town and county roads became clogged with snow. Cars, and vans without snow tires got stuck on local hilly roads, mainly Thornell Road. Later at nignt, snow became mixed with and then went to light rain for a period. This helped to compress the snow and make it wetter in density. Snow mixed with & changed to rain after 22:00 and temps went to 32 by 22:45. Remained above freezing till obs time at 08:00.

Afternoon rain showers associated with cold fropa and even stronger winds as area was placed under a wind advisory. Peak gusts of 45 knots, but areas north of us had stronger wind values. After 16:30 DST, a quick moving band of rain blossomed into a TS (thunderstorm), as it quickly exited the county. Strong downdraft from this feature and a windshift from west to north. Temps crashed from 58 at 1645 to 1745. TS duration was about 3 minutes as it rapidly sped eastward along the I-90 corridor. A second round of just rain arrived by 1745-1800. Clearing followed by sundown. Overnight, mainly clear as the moon lit the area with a notable low lunar angle of lighting in the southern sky. At obs time, mostly cloudy and 43.

Periods of snowshowers developed by midday Friday and Friday afternoon. Visibilities briefly dipping to a mile. No measurable accumulation, but a brief dusting seen briefly at night. Winds from the NW and gusty at times. Hard freeze again, much like last weekend. Daffodils now drooped on the ground. Overnight, clear to mostly cloudy. Birdbath water has turned to ice. Resulted in a minimum temperature lowest of them all this past cold week. At obs time, brilliant blue sky, light breeze and 38.

Afternoon saw the new development of the clouds with the circulation of the upper low from the mid Atlantic. A few showers noted on wx radar, pushing in from the BGM-ITH area (SE to NW movement). One of the weakening showers grazed the location here with just a few drops during the evening. Overnight, after a spectacular sunset with clouds lit up. it then cleared. Temps dropped to near 61. At early obs time, sunny and 62.

Rainfall much heavier over Eastview Mall area. Afterwards, skies returned to sunshine and clouds mixed. Latest sunset of year, allowing for extended twilight. Overnight, mostly clear and cool. Winds, light.

BUF airport reached 98, second hottest value ever observed. High pressure ridge axis crossed overhead at 200mb during day, suppressing any convention. Late in day, a cell blew up just to our southwest. For a brief minute, after 7pm EDT, large rain drops fell, wetting parts of the street. It then moved on. Overnight, mostly clear and humid. At obs, sunny with high Ci present, especially to the southeast of station, and 81.

Sunshine replaced by cirrostratus clouds in the afternoon, advecting in from the southeast...outer cloud bands from Tropical Storm Fay. Outer rain bands came very close to station by later Friday night, to western Wayne and Ontario counties. Brisk SE winds started by late afternoon, as effects from the landfalling tropical system in NJ were being felt here. At morning obs, mostly sunny, but with mid level clouds gathering to our west. That feature is in response to a slow moving low pressure area centered over eastern Lake Erie, showing heavy showers and embedded thunderstorms in that region. And it's moving towards western NY. Rainfall is needed, soils are dry. Lawns turning to brown in some areas.

Humid air, along with a small synoptic scale low pressure and associated short wave came rotating through and overhead. Gutters overflowed and water runoff caused flooding in area homes in their cellars. Following passage of this vigorous feature, skies cleared and replaced by a cooler and drier air mass. 8/4/2020 8:00 AM 1.63 0.0 M 0.0 M Temp range: 80/65. Torrential rain event due to strong thunderstorm line. Cluster of heaviest cells came right over southern Pittsford/northern Mendon. In 25 minutes, 1.60 inches of rain fell. Gutters overtopped with water. Basement wall became a waterfall, with water stream on floor. Other areas in this part of town have new lakes. Some tree branches down about 2 miles NNW of station. Remainder of night was quiet, except for a brief light rain interval At obs time, solid overcast and 67. Cloud shield courtesy of tropical cyclone over Virginia, racing NNE at 28 knots. Should be pointed out that this is the THIRD such extreme rainfall event this year, starting in June. This is the second such intense rainfall event in the past four weeks.
8/5/2020 8:00 AM 1.36 0.0 M 0.0 M Overcast and humid. What appeared to be on radar, a rain band, curved cyclonically...developed over station and extended to the S. This happened late morning. The result was another torrential downpour. It ended as light rain during the 2 hour interval. Remainder of afternoon, showed binovc, with low level clouds racing quickly from NW to SE. More light sprinkles during dusk. Airmass quickly transitioned to much drier air during the overnight. Tropical cyclone rain shield featuring heavy rains remained 40-60 miles to our east.
